Over the next 8 week's you will see a different page from my book of Tando. We hope that you will join in on these sessions and share your makes with us using the linky tool at the bottom, the collection will be open for 4 weeks giving you plenty of time to organise yourself. If you have any questions, comments or suggestions please share them with us in the comments section, answers will be published there so its worth checking back. Right where to start? Well at the beginning of a book there is a front cover/first page and that is where we will begin today. Squirt the shaving foam onto the plastic mat. You do not need a lot one short blast goes a very long way. Add various drops of inks to the foam and fold in with the plastic ruler. You will not need to fold more than once or twice the idea is to spread the inks rather than mix them. Press the Tando sheet into the coloured foam pushing it right in until the foam is escaping out on all 4 sides. You want full coverage in one go if at all possible. Set the Tando sheet aside with foam on top for a little while. There will be lots of foam left over so why not use it on some other card for another day. You will get different results each time, stop when the inks are so mixed that the results a muddy. Use the ruler to take the foam off the top of your Tanda sheet to revel the smoky background you have created. This is the background for our front cover. Using the ruler as a spreader some of the remaining foam can be scraped over the reverse side of the Tando Sheet to make the base of page 1. You can see here how muddy and dark the colours had become. Some pearlised paint was used in the mix which has given this a lovely sheen not really visible in the picture. Staying for now on the front cover the first embellishment is one of the Tando Book Plates which we will emboss with Cosmic shimmer. You will need for this Tando Book Plate Versamark or similar embossing ink Embossing Powder (ep) A pokey tool or something that can just hold the Tando Book Plate in place while you heat the ep. Heat gun. When the Tando Book Plate has been embossed and is set enough to handle go over the edges with Sakura Gold Pen-Touch to add a finish edge to it. Use the same Pen-touch on the edges of your Tando Sheet, looks much nicer than leaving them bare. Using quick drying strong PVA glue attach the Tando Book Plate to the Tando sheet. Using alphabet die cuts and paper of your choice cut out the name of your book. Add these with the same glue. When the glue is dry go over the whole of the page with Modge Podge to seal and secure your embellishments. To finish the front cover one of the 8 birds from the Tando Bird and Branch set has been embossed just as the Tando Book Plate was using Copper for the body and a contrasting yellow for the wing. The Tando bird has been perched in top of the letter f. Flat back pearls fill the pre drilled holes in the Tando Book Plate and the front cover is complete. Now for the first page or the reverse of the front cover. We have already given this a shaving foam base, now to build up some layer of colour and suggestion of design. The Tando Music Mask fits perfectly over the top. These masks are so strong they are a little thicker than some others on the market giving you confidence to do what you gotta do. Peeled paint Distress Stain has been used over the mask leaving the music score impression. Although you cannot see it here the sheen from the shaving foam stage seems to be stronger and more enhanced by this stage. Because this side will rest against the next page and to avoid embellishments rubbing each other this side is kept mainly flat. And it gives me an excuse to play with my Andy Skinner batik images stamp set. The words and the bird have been stamped in Adirondack Espresso. Using a water colour brush the inked outline of the bird has been pulled in to colour it. Tando Chipboard is very absorbent so the outline dried quickly, the ink pad was touched to an acrylic block and the ink picked up from there with the water brush to give more depth and colour to the image. The branch from the Tando Bird and Branch set was pressed into the ink pad giving it an all over brown colour. Stuck near the bottom of the page it gives the bird somewhere to land. My book of Tando, Session 2 Turning to the second page, and exploring Gesso as the base for colour on Tando. One side of the Tando sheet will be painted with White Gesso, the other with Black Gesso. Simple just a palette, gesso and a brush. As you can see one or two spots of black made it to the white side! One of the things I love about about a gesso base is the brush marks left on the Tando sheet and the discrete added texture they give. Distress stain goes on over the white quickly and easily you can see how it sinks into the brush marks. When dry the colour changes quite a lot. It does not migrate but stays where you put it unless evened out with a brush. The next layer is with the Tando Leaf Mask and the same Distress colour using the ink pads and a makeup sponge. Flip the Tando Mask over to have mirrored patterns. As the ink dries it fades into the stain below and the design becomes fainter. Colour the Tando Leaf Chipboard with more Distress Ink I have used Aged Mahogany and Vintage Photo two of my favourite colours and then sprayed with Iridescent Gold Glimmer Mist. Working on paper rather then a craft mat, this is one of those times when you might not want to stop to mop up the over inking on paper. Save this sheet instead re-using it you often end up with an interesting background. While the Leaf spray was drying the sentiment from Andy Skinner's 'Back to Nature' set stamped in DI Black Soot. Some of the black gesso splatter kinda adds character to the stamping. The leaf spray is stuck on with PVA glue. Bird and branch coloured with Peeled paint, Aged Mahogany and Vintage photo. Glossy Accents spread over the top and then all stuck together with the PVA glue. The edge of the page given a shading with the Black Soot. Now it is time to attend to the side painted with Black Gesso. A lovely matt black base to work on. Using Perfect Medium and the tree image from the Andy Skinner stamps. Using Jewel coloured Perfect Pearls the powder is lightly tapped over the wet ink, when both colours are down use the brush to remove all the loose powder from the Tando sheet. Repeat the stamping and Perfect Pearls colouring to create a scene on the page. All the stamps used were Andy Skinner's Back to Nature, the tree turned sideways and just the tips of the branches used for the greenery along the bottom. Perfect pearls being powder will rub off so a fixative is needed to make it permanent. On this page I used Spray and Shine which as well as fixing the image enhances the colours. My book of Tando, Session 3 Goodness The third session already! These are so much fun to do, this time using one of my favourite ways to colour Glimmer Mist spray paints. So lets get right to it. Once again starting with a 6" x 6" sheet of Tando and white gesso, this time just one side of the Tando Sheet has been painted. You will see later how messy I am and how splattered the other side is. Using just three colours of Glimmer mist, Meadow Green, Sunflower and Pumpkin Pie the surface has been liberally sprayed. Drying speed up with the help of a heat gun, more colour can be added as it is needed Now for embellishments, this great Tando Chipboard word has also been sprayed this time with Candy Apple Red and Harvest Orange. Note the great puddles on the craft mat these need not go to waste and next time page will be using. Back to this week now Colour a Tando bird with more Glimmer mist this time Sunflower and Harvest Orange. When colouring the pieces with spray it is easy to spray the side edges as well. A Tando heart, left over from a previous project, coloured with another favourite Inka Gold, in red over the top and round the edge. Just a note with this pigment recently learnt that if you dip your finger directly into the paste you might find later that it has grown mould. It seems that the natural bacteria on our hands reacts with the paste and causes this. If you want to use your fingers to spread the paste it is probably best to transfer some to your craft mat first. An old paw print PSX stamp marked across the page with Adirondack Espresso. The same ink is used to colour the branch the bird will perch on. The heart was stamped with another old PSX stamp, this one dated 1999 which makes it an antique. The paw on the Cattitude Tando piece has been picked out with Sakura pen. All the Tando pieces attached with PVA glue, to finish this side of the Tando sheet. This side has been left raw and just splatters of white gesso and then sprayed with the same colours as before. Without the gesso the colours are richer but lack the texture of the brush marks. Tando cogs mask places over the top and Inca Gold tapped through it. All these masks are based on the 6" square and so this one fits perfectly. They are also very hard wearing take a lot of punishment and simply wipe clean. The stenciling adds some texture where the pigment paste is a little thicker. marks are beginning to disappear into the back ground now. Those white gesso This is the only page that will have embellishments on both sides. While exploring Glimmer Mist thought it would be interesting to show you how it looks on white lined Tando. The butterfly has been sprayed with the same three colours, the white lining reflects the colour back. The corner flourish has been coloured with Inca Gold. Prima white flowers are the last of the embellishments for this page. Once more the glimmer mists added colour The page has been assembled and the edge of the Tando sheet given a Sakura Pen touch gold edge. This was also run along the page edge to cover the last of the Gesso marks. My book of Tando, Session 4 Friday the end of another working week for many of us and time for week four of our series, My Book of Tando A short session this week using up some of the inks and paper waste left over from previous (mostly last week's) sessions. This 6" x 6" Tando sheet was swiped in the ink pools from each spraying of Glimmer mist. Tando is tough and absorbent so the inks stay mostly where they are and are not wicked across the sheet. No extra colour was added but Viva Ferro in silver spread over the bare surfaces. Unmounted rubber stamp in script from Creative Expressions Timeless journey, moisten with a little water and pressed into the wet paste. The stamp has to be cleaned right away to avoid the paste drying on it. The paste on the page can be dried with the help of a heat gun. A Tando flourish has been coloured with Viva Inca Gold paste in Copper and Green. Iridescent Gold lightly sprayed over the top, this lubricates the pigment paste helping to spread and blend it. To complete the page the bird and branch were coloured with Inca Gold. The same script stamped used randomly over the page and paste and then blasted with some Glimmer Mist, Meadow Green and Candy Apple Red. Flourish and Bird attached. For the reverse the paper that has been under the work previously was cut down to make a 6" square backing and then stuck to the Tando. Usually best to have the paper slightly larger, it is easy to trim it to fit but if you cut it exactly and then stick it slightly wrong not so easy to correct. This time the Tando circles mask is taped over the page so that it stays in place. Spread Dreamweaver embossing paste in Silver over the top to fill the gaps. Remove the stencil and wash the excess paste off. The masks are sturdy but a layer of paste will make them difficult to use. While the paste is wet some Alcohol ink has been dropped on to it. Unfortunately this side did not work out quite as planned. A lot of the time I am making these up as I go along and when this one showed it's faults it was to late to start again. at least as a using up your waste page so decided to keep it as a warts and all show and tell.
