not a hero with omnipresent supernatural powers. In fact, his abilities only awaken in certain difficult situations and require the delicate balance between body and mind that cannot be maintained for long. Such experiences often leave him exhausted and confused. They save him from the burden of solitude and leave him with the feeling of belonging to his adoptive tribe, profound feelings of friendship and understanding of others. Ned is not a cold-hearted executioner for whom the end justifies the means. Even though violence often surrounds him and emergencies force him to make quick decisions, Magic Wind always respects his adversaries. He is even generous enough to forgive them if he sees that they can be redeemed. Gianfranco Manfredi’s Magic Wind is monthly graphic novel adventure series from SAF, set on the American Frontier in the late 1800’s. Through over 100 issues to date, the wide ranging series has followed the journey of Private Ned Ellis, who the Indians call “Magic Wind.” Magic Wind (alias Ned Ellis) is an ex-soldier who was victim of a political-military plot. Barely surviving an explosion of an armored freight car, set up by a gang of corrupt soldiers and arms traffickers, and in between life and death, he is taken in by Lame Horse, an old Lakota shaman. Interpreting the indications he received in a vision, the old man sees in Ned an emissary of the Big Spirit. Welcome among the Indians, Ned is reborn. Haunted by a harrowing past that comes back to him in fragments and sometimes threatens to overwhelm him, and running toward a future that is frequently unsettling and appears menacing to the Indians, Magic Wind lives the double role of warrior and shaman. He struggles with flesh and blood adversaries, as well as with enemies even more dangerous and lethal then men -- ghosts, evil spirits and mysterious creatures that cannot be confronted with traditional weapons. He must constantly seek new resources in the secret powers of Indian magic. Still, Magic Wind is Book #75: HUMAN TORCHES Somewhere in the Rockies, under the jurisdiction of Judge Morris, there is a small town where cases of human spontaneous combustion are occurring. The judge enlists the aid of Magic Wind and Poe to investigate, and they find themselves embroiled in mystery, sorcery, exorcisms, superstitions and all too real nightmares seemingly sprung from the darkest Middle Ages. More than 100 books have been published so far, totaling over 11,000 comic pages. Book #102: THE RETURN OF AIWASS Book #104: ESCAPE FROM HELL An ancient ritual artifact is stolen from the Smithsonian in Washington. The relic in question is a golden claw that was uncovered during an archaeological dig in the snake-shaped Serpent Mound. Uncertain as to what this mysterious claw was even used for, the archaeologists are further mystified as to who would want to steal it. And why? But the Secret Service immediately suspects that this is somehow connected to the Black Vault, an occult sect of conspirators thought to have been eradicated long ago, but which has now reformed with a mysterious new leader. While Poe is summoned to the capital to lend a hand in the investigation, Magic Wind – who has been having unsettling, baffling visions of death – rushes to Serpent Mound to halt the excavations because down there, underneath the ancient mound, there lurks a terrible hazard. Seems the wellspring the archaeologists have uncovered in the Serpent’s head is actually the gateway to Hell. Hordes of demons and ghastly creatures are preventing Magic Wind from escaping the underground labyrinth known as the Reign of the Ancient Ones. But he is also in a race against time because the Great Exit Door is about to open, and if the necromancer Aiwass manages to cross the threshold before him, Ned would be trapped forever in the reign of the Dead. Meanwhile in Providence, Poe uncovers a clue that might lead him to Aiwass. It’s the story of Adam Stewart, a mysterious Vampire hunter who vanished into thin air long ago. What could link this enemy of Evil to this Necromancer, who brazenly flaunts his allegiance to Absolute Evil? Soon all will be revealed in a final, furious battle.
