By honoring achievements of these outstanding individuals, the Board of Directors hopes to: • Demonstrate community appreciation for the efforts of public school students, educators and parents; • Acknowledge the critical partnership among schools, home, business and the community; • Provide a positive reinforcement for younger students and a goal for which they can strive; • Involve the community and business in building awareness and confidence in our public schools. STUDENTS: “A Celebration of Excellence” recognizes exceptional students who have demonstrated their efforts in the classroom, school and in the community day after day, year after year. Distinguished Scholars were selected on the basis of criteria developed by high school students, teachers and administrators, including grade point average; number of honors, advanced placement and other higher level courses; total credit hours; activities; ACT or SAT scores; and community service. High school teachers identified Distinguished Achievers based on excellence in a specific curricular area, leadership, service or overcoming obstacles to achievement. TEACHERS: “A Celebration of Excellence” honors Distinguished Educators who will join students at the gala. Each student identified the educator who had the most positive impact on his or her life and wrote a short message about why that educator was selected. The Helena Education Foundation salutes these special educators and thanks them for sharing their talents, knowledge, creativity and love of learning with our youth. They make a difference in our schools and community, one student and one class at a time. PARENTS: “A Celebration of Excellence” also recognizes the important partnership between parents and schools that is critical to a student’s success. The Board of Directors recognizes and thanks parents, families and friends for the contributions they make to student scholarship and achievement. COMMUNITY: “A Celebration of Excellence” also provides an opportunity to acknowledge another important partnership – the role of the Helena area community in a successful public education system. The Board applauds community members, businesses, service groups and friends of the Helena Education Foundation who sponsored these exceptional students and educators as their guests this evening. Please note the many generous event and table sponsors listed in this program and thank them for their support. The Helena Education Foundation Board of Directors welcomes you to its second annual special evening, A Celebration of Excellence 2004, honoring Helena’s Distinguished Scholars; Distinguished Achievers; Distinguished Educators; Distinquished Alumnus, and the first annual HEF Leadership Award winner. Help us celebrate the talents, achievements and dedication of this extraordinary group of individuals. We thank all of you who helped make this evening possible. 9 HELENA EDUCATION FOUNDATION\ A CELEBRATION OF EXCELLENCE PROGRAM 5:15 PM SOCIAL 6:00 PM DINNER Welcome Jim Smith, Mayor of Helena Lisa Cordingley, President, Helena Education Foundation Bruce Messinger, Superintendent of Schools, Helena Public Schools Introduction of Special Guests Board of Directors & Honorary Board Board of Trustees, Helena Public Schools Event Underwriters Elected officials Community leaders Master of Ceremonies, Joe Mazurek, HHS class of 1966 7:15 RECOGNITION OF: Distinguished Alumnus: Harriett Meloy, HHS class of 1933 Distinguished Scholars Distinguished Achievers Distinguished Teachers HEF 2004 Leadership Award 8:45 DRAWINGS Students Teachers Guests 9:00 CLOSING REMARKS Lisa Cordingley Bruce Messinger 10 INTRODUCING THIS EVENING’S HONORED GUESTS DISTINGUISHED ALUMNUS Harriet Meloy – HHS Class of 1933 14 DISTINGUISHED SCHOLARS DISTINGUISHED EDUCATORS Miles A.
