Why was Insuladd® developed
Back In 1996 NASA encountered problems with heat generation on the aft
casings of the Solid Rocket Boosters on the Space Shuttle. These provide 60%
of thrust on take off. A new environmentally friendly improved coating was
required to block heat transfer from the rocket motors exhaust to the casing.
The product developed was called INSULADD® and its most important
property is that it has a very low thermal conductivity to significantly reduce
heat transfer.
These thermal blocking properties give rise to a new type of “Insulation” and
many new industrial and domestic applications.
In 2007 it was officially designated an official NASA Spin-off product.
What is Insuladd®
Insuladd® is a unique blend of coated
ceramic microspheres and is designed to
be mixed with ANY off the shelf paint.
These coated ceramic microsphere are
hollow with a vacuum at their centre. Heat
cannot be transferred through a vacuum
by conduction and it is this feature which
creates a thermal block for the passage of
heat. The material is environmentally
friendly and totally inert.
Insuladd® can reduce heat absorption
and has proven to be able to save
homeowners up to 15% of their normal
heating costs. Insuladd® makes your
house paint act as a heat barrier or
radiant barrier. During the winter, it
greatly reduces heat loss from your home
and prevents it from migrating through
your walls and ceilings and escaping to
the cold outside air.
Insuladd® prevents/reduces condensation by maintaining the wall temperature
at a slightly higher value. Since mould and mildew growth are made active by
condensation Insuladd® helps eliminate or reduce mold and mildew growth.
Applications for Insuladd®
Emulsion Paint
Probably the most popular use of Insuladd® is as an additive to interior
emulsion paint. If you have access to youtube follow this link for a short video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RgI-DAUilrY
One pouch is sufficient to mix with 5litres of paint in a larger mixing container
and applied to walls and ceilings. A mixer paddle for insertion into an electric
drill will prove very useful but is not essential.
Once mixed the paint can be applied to the walls and ceilings in the normal
way by either brush, roller or spray gun (be sure to remove the filter from the
spray gun or the additive will be filtered out)
Ensure any loose material is removed from the walls and ceilings before
starting. This is a standard instruction for any paint application. Two coats are
recommended for maximum thermal barrier.
If a break is taken ensure that the paint is stirred prior to re-use to prevent the
additive settling. Any unused paint can be stored in the normal way - just
ensure a thorough mixing when the paint is re-used.
Any unused powder should be sealed in the pouch (with Sellotape) and stored
in a dry environment. Shelf life correctly stored - greater than 5 years.
Please refer to our Tops section before starting a project.
Masonry Paint
Insuladd® may be added to masonry paint and applied externally to reduce
the heat energy from the sun entering the building envelope thereby making
internal rooms more comfortable in summer. In particular in hot climates to
reduce demand on the air conditioning and save energy.
Metal Paint
Insuladd® may be added to metal paint and used as a thermal block, it can
also be used as a “warm to the touch” handrail paint since the Insuladd®
particles maintain a slightly higher surface temperature. Application for both
heat exclusion (metal control boxes in hot climate conditions) and also anticondensation (in metal container) are popular with Insuladd®
The concentration for this application should be 100g of Insuladd® mixed with
1 litre of paint. Minimum of 2 coat application.

How INSULADD® can prevent
mould and mildew.
Mould spreads like any other living organism; it reproduces and grows in
moist and damp areas. Where there's moisture, there's almost bound to
be mould and mildew. INSULADD® insulating additives for paint have
proven to reduce moisture formation on walls and ceilings. INSULADD®
basically ruins the party for mould and mildew because it has very good
moisture resistant additives and inhibits condensation. INSULADD®
eliminates the key factor, moisture, and stops the spread of mould and
mildew.
INSULADD® is a safe and non-toxic coated ceramic microsphere moisture
resistant paint additive. Most importantly in the effort to prevent mould
and mildew, INSULADD® reduces the formation of surface condensation
while providing you with and adding a layer of insulation. All you have to
do is add INSULADD® to common house paint or roof coatings when
coating roofs or walls in your home, warehouse or office building.
Mould spores are present in the air. Their ability to grow on painted
surfaces is exactly what INSULADD® counteracts with its moisture
resistant paint properties. Without INSULADD®, mould spores land on a
damp wall surfaces. Then they begin growing and spreading. There are
moulds that can grow on wood, paper, carpet, and foods, basically most
surfaces can support mould and mildew growth.
When excessive moisture accumulates on a surface indoors or outdoors,
mould growth will often occur, particularly if the moisture problem remains
undiscovered or neglected. There is no practical way to eliminate all mould
and mildew spores in the indoor environment; the best way to control
indoor mould and mildew growth is to control moisture and the best way
to do that is by using INSULADD® products.
INSULADD® products control moisture transmission through painted
surfaces and can greatly reduce or prevent mould and mildew growth.
INSULADD® creates a moisture resistant barrier in paint that blocks out
surface condensation and protects the finish in your home or office. It not
only makes your environment more comfortable, but prolongs the life of
the paint you use.
Testimonials from Insuladd® Users
I have been a time served painter and decorator for the best part of 50
years. It is only over the past 12 months that i was made aware of Insuladd
Paint additive. At first as with many new products I was somewhat sceptical of
its potential. However following a few customer trials i have been informed by
customers that rooms painted do feel noticeably warmer, and in rooms with a
problem with condensation all traces of condensation mould and mildew have
disappeared.
The most outstanding success I think is a customer with a room extension
which is 2/3 single glazed 1/3 brick. Condensation was a daily problem.
Following painting with Insuladd in the emulsion paint 90% of the
condensation has gone. It is no longer a problem.

Hello
After buying four pouches of insuladd from your company, I proceeded to
paint two bedrooms and my bathroom with a good quality paint plus the
insuladd. I am really happy with the results, the bedroom walls feel warm to
the touch, the bathroom now holds the heat in much better than before. I will
be buying more insuladd to finish off the rest of the house. Thank you again,
my friends are looking into your product as I speak, they will be in touch.

Dear Sir
I used insuladd at the weekend hence the late reply. The product was easy to
use. I used a drill bit for mixing, as I wanted to make sure I'd mixed it in well.
It's got a slight texture to it which it not that noticeable to the eye. But to the
touch, feels like a very fine sand paper. I used a silk emulsion paint with mine
& to my surprise it made it look like an expensive textured paint. My room
does feel a little warmer & it does seem to hold the heat in a little longer.
Though the real test will be when the weather gets colder. I will be buying this
product again to do my other rooms in the house. I also noticed that you get a
lot more emulsion once you add insuladd. So in my opinion it's worth a try, the
amount of emulsion you end up with kind of makes up for the cost.

I recently bought some of your product Insuladd and must say initially I'm
liking what I see, I like the finish (velvety) and using it as an undercoat and
gloss on very rough woodwork it seems to be very durable and is so far
holding excellently and looking good; My advise here is don't lay off the paint
to much as it dries, this tends to pull it off. Using it as an exterior emulsion (in
white) makes it seem very bright indeed that sounds crazy I know but it does;
My advice here is keep stirring the paint and apply quick as you can. I have
two pouches left which I have 2 bathrooms to paint to try and cut down
mildew, I shall be using a roller and will let you know the out come as and
when. I also have other jobs lined up with people who have seen the results so
far, and like what they see who will be contacting you soon for your Insuladd
product. They will be requiring it's insulating properties as their priority, again I
will be in touch.
Mr R

I am writing to thank you for the supply of the Insuladd pouch I bought from
you three months ago. We mixed the Insuladd into 5 litres of Dulux Brilliant
White Silk finish emulsion paint. We applied two coats of this mix by roller and
brush to the four walls and the ceiling of our home office. The application was
easy and the resultant finish which is best described as a very slight texture
looks very good indeed.
Have we seen any thermal benefits. Yes, I think we have. So much so that my
husband has been checking with a thermometer over the last three months for
any measurable effect. The office appears to be between 1.5 and 2.0C warmer
than any other room in the house. We have not yet switched our heating on for
the winter season, the only source of heat in the office is the PC which it would
appear is keeping the temp up. Even in the morning when the PC has been off
all night with the door shut, the office is generally 1.0 - 1.5C warmer than any
other room in the house.
We are very encouraged by this and will be decorating the rest of the house
over the next 12 months. We will be back in touch for some more Insuladd.

I have received my Insuladd, I have heard it is very good and purchased it
based on a recommendation from a friend who has had similar problems with
condensation/mould. They couldn't praise it enough. I found the ordering
process very simple and I received the package very promptly. Overall I am
very satisfied, thank you.

Dear Sirs,
I am writing concerning your Insuladd product, which I recently purchased
from you.
The intention for the product was to paint my bathroom ceiling, which suffers
very badly from mould, due to the damp nature of our bathroom.
We have tried every mould resistant paint on the market, to no avail. We have
now had your product in use for around 2 months, and our ceiling is still pure
white, with zero signs of mould or damp. While in the shower, I can actually
see that the moisture from The water does not land on the ceiling at all, this is
very visible to the naked eye.
I now wish that You made a clear powder to add to my tile sealant, then I
could use your product on my bathroom walls.
Yours sincerely,
Jason Megson Bradford
I am really pleased with the outcome from the use of Insuladd, the
condensation was running down the walls of my daughters apartment [all solid
concrete walls] the central heating had to be running for at least twelve hours
a day to keep the walls dry. After using Insuladd there is no condensation on
the walls. The central heating is now running for about six hours a day. A
substantial saving in energy.
Mr T Carlow Ireland
This is a true story that I hope you will find interesting. I moved into a
refurbished apartment in July 2010. I noticed that by the end of Aug I
seemed to be getting a lot of head colds and my breathing was becoming
laboured [something which had never happened previous to this] I had
noticed some condensation on the walls, but did not associate this with my
problem. By mid November I was using an 'inhaler' for my breathing the
weather was extremely cold, minus 12 degrees, the condensation was
actually running down the walls of my bedroom. At this point my doctor
suggested that I vacate my apartment until such time as it was completely
insulated, I approached a builder who informed me that as the walls were
built with mass concrete this would be a far more expensive project to
complete. The quote for this was fifteen thousand euro, this would entail
using 1'' insulating slabs for all exterior walls etc etc. At this point my
health was deteriorating and I could not afford this kind of money. I was
explaining my predicament to my friend , when she told me about a paint
insulation she had used that had solved her condensation problem. I
bought 12 pouches of the 'insuladd' paint additive which was enough to
paint all the ceilings and walls in my apartment.
Its been two months since the apartment was insulated with the
insuladd ,from the day the insuladd was applied there has been no
condensation or mould, Its been six weeks since I used the inhaler, my
doctor has informed me that I am back to full health.
I am writing this testimonial to thank the company that make Insuladd
and to make people aware of the great insulating properties of Insuladd.
Kind Regards
Vanessa

You will be pleased to know that the container which was painted white
and used Insuladd on both the interior and exterior has been used in
anger in Oman as a fully functioning mobile workshop. The container
was definitely cooler than neighboring white containers by quite a few
degrees. Coupled with the use of an air conditioning unit, a very easy
working environment. When the outside temperature was in the mid
30's.
Next stop Qingdao, China. Where it could be snowing.
