A New Standard of Leadership and Excellence
A New Standard of Leadership and Excellence Crossroads for Kids Five Cs A New Standard of Leadership and Excellence The Five Cs are the pillars of Crossroads roadmap to nurturing the next generation of diverse young leaders in Massachusetts. By supporting our kids and teens to embody the essence of the Cs in their daily lives, we are providing the tools and fostering the passion and spirit that will ensure they succeed wherever the road may take them. Before Crossroads: I was scared, I was careless, I was not trusted, I was troubled, I was betrayed, I was impatient, I was becoming less of a person, I was headed on the wrong track, I was alone, I was not happy, I was selfish, I was quiet. photo: David Grossman Character Driven Challenge Ready Community Focused College Bound Committed to a Better Future Because of Crossroads: I am a believer, I am stronger, I am trusted, I am open to others, I am headed on the right track, I am caring, I am comfortable in my own skin, I am growing up, I am able to smile, I AM ME. 1 Crossroads for Kids Changes Lives I am honored each day to be a part of this incredible family we call Crossroads for Kids. I suppose you could say I feel like a proud parent when I see a child grow from a shy 7 year-old with the weight of the world on their shoulders into a confident college bound high school graduate. Knowing that Crossroads challenged and supported them to be character driven on their personal journey to success is both humbling and inspiring. What makes us most proud is seeing our graduates develop into community focused young adults who show kindness and respect for everyone around them and understand the value and intrinsic reward found in service to others. All of this – and all that lies ahead for Crossroads and the amazing kids we serve – is made possible by you. Whether this year marked the first or 40th year you invested in our programs, we are incredibly honored to count you among our dedicated partners. Your support sends a message to our staff, our communities, and most importantly, to our kids: “I believe in you, and what you can become.” More than any line item on a budget sheet could ever indicate, this message is what fuels our organization. We are humbled by your generosity and your confidence in our mission. Together, we are changing the lives of at-risk youth in Greater Boston and Eastern Massachusetts. When they succeed, we succeed. On behalf of everyone at Crossroads for Kids, thank you for supporting the work we are honored to do each day. Crossroads for Kids changes lives – because of you. With heartfelt thanks, Deb Samuels Executive Director 2 I am incredibly proud to be part of the Crossroads for Kids community, especially at this exciting and momentous point in the evolution of our organization. The extraordinary outcomes we have seen since our first class of year-round teen leadership participants graduated in 2008 are inspiring. Our 100% high school graduation rate and 93% college acceptance rate further support what we at Crossroads have always known to be true - we have developed a unique and particularly effective program model for helping young people from risk-filled environments reach their potential. It is now our responsibility to bring our services to as many Massachusetts youth as possible. In 2010 the Crossroads for Kids Board completed our Strategic Plan, creating a blueprint for increasing the number of youth in our long term, high-impact, year-round programming by over 100% in the next 5 years. With such ambitious goals for ourselves and for the youth in our programs, we are dedicated to thoughtful and effective growth that always maintains the quality of the relationships we build with our youth. We invite you to join us as we move forward to effect even greater change in the communities we serve. We are so grateful for the unwavering support of our donors who have shown their commitment to our youth is as strong as our own. Your support has allowed Crossroads for Kids to be challenge ready and thrive in even the most challenging economic climates. Our shared commitment to a better future for at-risk youth will ensure that our communities are filled with the next generation of diverse young leaders. I know you will share my excitement as we embark on this exciting next step in our Crossroads for Kids journey. Sincerely, Catherine Curtin Dyroff Chair, Board of Trustees 3 photo: David Grossman 75 Years of Changing Lives Crossroads Year-Round Crossroads for Kids – The Beginning We opened our doors in 1936 under a different name but with the same goal: to change the lives of Massachusetts at-risk youth. …means comprehensive programming and support during the summer and For our first 61 years we changed lives primarily through our residential summer camp programs. The teachers, guidance counselors and principals who worked with our campers during the summer as Crossroads seasonal staff, also worked with our kids during the school year and confirmed what we knew to be true. the school year for up to 10 years of a child’s life. The effects of a positive and supportive overnight summer camp experience directly supports academic and social success in the school environment, and beyond. They also confirmed something else we knew to be true, that this impact could wane as time passed. As the lessons and community grew more distant in a child’s memory, their struggles returned. To more completely support our kids we knew we needed to expand our services and create a new model to serve kids all year long. Beyond Summer Camp A New Program Model is Born In 1997 we took our first step toward year-round programming with the introduction of our Crossroads Continuity Initiative program (CCI). The goal of CCI was to help our kids stay connected to the support, strength and consistency found at Crossroads by bringing them back to camp at least one weekend a month to be re-energized and re-motivated to succeed during the school year. Crossroads and C5 A Perfect Combination In 2003, Crossroads began our partnership with the national C5 Youth Foundation. Created by leading youth development professionals, the five-year, year-round C5 Teen Leadership Program curriculum model fit perfectly with our vision of ensuring all kids and teens receive the support they need to be successful in work, school and life. When our first C5 class graduated in 2008 with 100% of teens also graduating from high school and 93% achieving college acceptances, we knew that our C5 partnership would continue to propel us toward fulfilling our vision of long term support for kids and teens and developing the next generation of diverse young leaders. Today Crossroads is proud to be the New England affiliate of the National Association of C5 Youth Programs, where the five Cs are changing the lives of young leaders across the United States. 1936 Arthur Taylor Burgess conceives the idea for the Boys and Girls Camps 4 1937 1938 1939 1942 First ever session at Camp Wing Duxbury Stockade construction begins Duxbury Stockade opens with two units 1961 Land for Camp Assets of total Mitton is acquired organization in Brewster, MA exceeds the 1 million mark Camp Lapham for the first time for Girls opened in Ashby, MA 1972 1975 First session of Camp Wing Day Camp Camp Lapham is converted to a co-ed camp First session for co-ed use at Duxbury Stockade 1997 1998 2003 2008 First Year-Round Program Offerings We officially change our name to Crossroads for Kids C5 becomes part of the Crossroads Family First C5 Class Graduates 2010 We Celebrate our 75th Summer Serving Youth Roadmap to a Better Future Strategic Plan Completed 5 CHALLENGE READY Roadmap to a Better Future A New Model for Leadership and Excellence The Crossroads strategic plan Roadmap to a Better Future has emerged from our existing strength and proven success in making lasting positive change in the lives and communities of the youth we serve. The plan provides a new and shared vision rooted in our historic legacy as well as specific objectives, goals and benchmarks against which to gauge our performance. Strategic Initiatives Increased Enrollment Capacity We will incrementally expand our capacity to serve 800 youth in year-round programming by 2015. Evaluation and Measurement We will invest in comprehensive evaluation and measurement tools and systems to: • Ensure the highest level of service. • Enable us to more effectively communicate our outcomes. • Solidify our model for replication and further impact. Expanding our Resources Being a part of Crossroads and being surrounded by all of the amazing people involved makes me want to be a better person. Crossroads is not just a place or person, they are my home and my family. I am grateful for the person they have helped me to be and all of the opportunities they have and continue to bring me. 6 - Taryn We will efficiently and effectively develop the resources required to achieve the following goals: • Expand our Mission-furthering programs, Crossroads Connects and Camp Wing Day Camp. • Embark on a Strategic Development Planning Process. • Develop and enhance our capacity to manage our physical resources. • Continued investment in our incredible team. 7 photo: David Grossman photo: David Grossman I am... The Cornerstone Code is the foundation of the C5 Teen Leadership Program; however, today at Crossroads we challenge all of the youth in our programs to hold themselves accountable to these expectations beginning at age seven. 8 Crossroads helped me realize that I could make a difference in other people’s lives the way that Crossroads has changed mine. - Tatiana COMMUNITY FOCUSED 9 Our Kids Come from families who work hard to make ends meet. 86% of our participants come from homes where the annual income is $5,200 or less per family member. Live in situations where life isn’t always easy. 73% of our participants live in single parent households. 35% of our participants live in foster care or have open cases with social workers. A child can remain a part of the Crossroads family regardless of transitions they and their families may face. Whether they move to a different neighborhood, a different school or a different town altogether, they can continue to count on Crossroads wherever their paths’ may lead. 10 15% of our participants are currently or have recently lived in transition (shelters, homelessness). Our Crossroads family is diverse. Crossroads kids bring experience from diverse communities, neighborhoods, cultures and backgrounds across 130 different towns in Eastern Massachusetts. 11 The Five Cs in Action Real Life Results of Crossroads graduates have also graduated from high school. Crossroads for Kids challenged me and changed my vision for the future. Before, all I cared about was playing basketball; I never even thought about college and now I am in my freshman year. - Jalen All statistics based on students who have been part of our year-round program for five or more years. Did you know that only 69% of Massachusetts at-risk kids and teens graduate from high school and only enroll in college? 60% 12 13 COLLEGE BOUND Crossroads Impact in the Classroom There is no doubt in my mind that the lessons learned at Crossroads have helped our students grow and mature. It has shaped them, helped them aspire to more, to be self-reliant and self-sufficient. Reva Castaline, LICSW, Brockton School Dept Crossroads has offered our students and alumni access to amazing educational opportunities. The common element in the Crossroads C5 program is a focus on leadership development and personal responsibility. I appreciate the affordability and outreach to families and community that are hallmarks of the program. Teresa Rodriguez, Director of High School and Summer Placement, Roxbury Prep Because of Crossroads for Kids I feel like anything is possible and I am happy to have their support as I plan for my future: graduating from high school, going to college, and continuing to give back so I can change other people’s lives the way they changed mine. - Janasha 14 By participating in the Crossroads program our students come to school with the confidence to take risks and be leaders with their peers and in their communities. The impact lasts as they continue to put themselves in new and challenging situations in high school. I wish every student had the opportunity to participate in such a high quality and formative program. Caitlin Moore, 7/8th History Teacher, Excel Academy Over the course of the Crossroads program we have watched our students grow into more confident and self-assured young adults which has measurable impact on their academic and life successes. Laura Goldworm, Director of Graduate Support, Excel Academy 15 IM E C5 molded me into the person I am today and offered me opportunities that you can’t find anywhere else. Being able to go on a wilderness trek in Wyoming pushed me beyond my comfort zones and showed me I can do anything. Going on the College Tour showed me just how many doors are open to me. C5 is helping me pave the road to my future. RY KA The Crossroads Road to Success RO This is my first summer with Crossroads and already it feels like my second family. I feel like I can be myself. I’m working hard so that I’m nominated for C5, and plan to work here someday. In just a few weeks, Crossroads has changed my whole outlook on life. The memories I have made will never leave me. EY GRADE 1 2 3 Summer programs Our two distinct summer programs serve as the entry to the Crossroads community, and are designed to provide the unique support each child needs when we meet them. At Camp Mitton we work with kids who need more one-on-one support to feel safe and to succeed. Often Camp Mitton campers have recently experienced serious and sensitive situations or tragedy in their lives. At Camp Wing, we teach our students to manage stressful situations while making positive choices. We focus on the development of new skills, peer relation abilities, conflict resolution and self-worth. 16 4 5 LU IS MAR LA IN At Crossroads I learned how to trust people and make friends – it is my second home. After three years of summer camp, I was old enough to be nominated for the CCI program. It is so much fun! I get to see my counselors and friends during the school year and do cool things like visit museums, volunteer and play games. My Crossroads Family is always with me through everything. The year I joined CCI I was also adopted, and it feels like I was adopted into two families. In just a few years, I hope to graduate to C5, the program so many of my counselors were in. I never want to leave Crossroads! Crossroads’ confidence in my ability to build my own future has given me the support to get to where I am today - starting my third year of college! I love school, but I also loving knowing that every summer I’m coming home to Crossroads as a counselor and mentor for kids who are just like I was. 6 Crossroads Continuity Initiative (CCI) (3rd-7th grade) Year-round programming starts here. CCI comprises the first 5 years of our 10-year program and lays the foundation all children need for future academic success and leadership. In CCI students discover their potential in developmental programs that focus on building trust, self-confidence, communication skills and making positive choices. 7 8 9 10 Teen Leadership Program (8th-12th Grade) Comprising the second half of the Crossroads experience, C5 focuses on leadership skill building, college readiness, financial literacy and community service. There are many milestones along the way including a Wyoming wilderness trek, a multi-campus college tour, and a week-long community-service road trip. 11 12 Freshman Year & Beyond! Paying it forward: A new generation of change makers Crossroads is building a pipeline of committed role-models who are committed to bettering their communities. We are pleased to be able to continue supporting their development as they move into mentorship positions, both at Crossroads and in the world, where they can make a difference in another child’s life the way Crossroads has in theirs. 17 COMMITTED TO A BETTER FUTURE I would not have the confidence in my ability to achieve all of my goals for their future that I have today if it weren’t for my Crossroads family. They made it a priority to be in my life and their passion for me to succeed is as strong as my own. - Greta Committed Partners Crossroads for Kids provides youth with an academic and social support structure that offers a wealth of opportunity; but, if a young person is unable to overcome the growing financial barrier to college, their education will end after high school, despite their achievements. We are proud to partner with such an outstanding organization to help tear down those barriers and ensure that those opportunities – and the dreams of their young people – are not denied. Bob Giannino-Racine Executive Director, ACCESS At Bingham, we are focused on providing a better future for today’s youth. We choose to support Crossroads for Kids because the incredible impact of their programs is evident from the moment you meet one of their participants. Their maturity, focus, goals and just sheer optimism for the future are impressive, and we are proud to be a part of developing these inspiring young leaders. Catherine Curtin Dyroff Director of Community Affairs, Bingham McCutchen LLP Chair- Crossroads Board of Trustees In all my years of working with kids I cannot recall a time where I was more overwhelmed by the absolute glee on the faces of children as I was when I first visited Crossroads. I knew right then that Crossroads was an organization doing something very special. Kevin Phelan President, Colliers International Crossroads Trustee I have had the opportunity to become personally acquainted with many of Crossroads amazing kids and to witness first-hand how the Crossroads program has the power to instill leadership qualities, a drive for academic success and the importance of community service. Don Rodman, Founder, Rodman Ride for Kids When you talk with the young people involved in Crossroads, you are nothing less than amazed at the adversity they have overcome. There are some very difficult, even heartbreaking stories. Yet within each of these youths, you can see the spark that has prompted others to say, “This young person can do great things, given a chance.” At Babson Capital, we see Crossroads as that chance. Bernadette Clegg Chief Financial Officer, Babson Capital Management Crossroads for Kids provides a wonderful opportunity for young people to learn more about themselves and the skills necessary to become leaders.
