This will be a great opportunity to mix and mingle with fellow festivalgoers and learn about what the 2016 festival has to offer. Local alumni from our opening night film, the Elvis classic Follow That Dream, will be on hand to share their memories from their time on set with “The King”. It’s a great way to kick off your week with us at the SSIFF! *Open Event – Free to the public! DAY 2 - Tuesday, April 5 - OPENING NIGHT – Downtown Ocala brings you “Rock & Reel: Opening Night at SSIFF 16” “Food, Fun. Bobby Socks. Elvis Movie. Downtown Rocks!” Purchase tickets in advance at www.SpringsFilmFest.com 4:30pm - 8:45pm - Ocala’s downtown merchants are among our favorite festival partners and together with the City of Ocala we will treat you to an Opening Night like no other. Historic Downtown Ocala will be decked out for a Sock Hop on the square, complete with Vintage Cars framing the square, Duke Energy’s Photo Booth and Q 92.9 spinning the records. Participating merchants offer delicious bites and festive drinks to help you hop ‘til you drop. Elvis impersonators will be on hand, challenging party-goers to an Elvis dance off, and we’ll be checking out “your look” and awarding great prizes for best costumes and best Elvis moves. So dig out your duds (Google Sandra Dee and Bobby Darin ) and join us! Tickets for this event include Tapas Walk and Opening Night Film. All events on the square are free to the public! 9:00pm - 11:00pm - Follow That Movie... to the Historic Marion Theatre where Duke Energy welcomes you to our Opening Night film, the Elvis classic, Follow That Dream. So grab a box of popcorn, wrap your sweater around your shoulders and get ready for a nostalgic trip to 1960s Florida! Follow That Dream /Historic Marion Theatre 9:00pm - Main Theatre In this adaptation of the novel, Pioneer, Go Home!, Pop Kwimper’s (Arthur O'Connell) vagabond family, including son Toby (Elvis Presley), Holly Jones (Anne Helm) and various adopted children travel through Florida where Pop drives onto an as-yet-unopened section of highway. When the car runs out of gas, Holly charms Toby into persuading Pop to take up residence on the land next to the road, where a chance encounter with an avid fisherman gives Holly the idea to build a business that caters to sport fishermen. Soon the family’s idyllic new existence is threatened by a jilted, Toby-obsessed social worker who tries to take the children away; a government official determined to evict the squatters from their eyesore of a home and a couple of gamblers who set up a casino in a nearby trailer. In the end, Toby's earthy wits win over the judge and the family returns to its new home.
