This issue of the Redline must begin with two apologies. That apology is to the CNY PCA members for the tardiness of
the May/June edition. The second apology is to Dick Jeffers. Dick has been timely and concise in his submission. His
photographs have been spot on and his comments very helpful. The tardiness of the newsletter left us with a Chinese fire
drill scenario (is that politically correct?) when we were 3 weeks late. Dick’s registration form for the annual Eurocar
event was cut and presumed pasted into the redone newsletter. Instead of cut and paste we ended up with cut and no
pasting in sight. Errors happen and we will own up to them when they happen. Please accept our sincere apologies Dick for
the oversight.
We are now deep in the heart of the PCA summer season. The Spring Rally was a huge success with a ton of cars showing
up in Dryden to test their skills against uber rally master Steve Turco. Linda & I decided to do the editorial photographic
thing and ran ahead of the leaders taking pictures in various spots. You can tell from the parking lot photos that there
were lots of friendly members, good food, and a rally. Several weeks before that was John Hajny’s tech session in the
Tri-cities area. You can tell from the pictures of the session that it was a good one with lots of learning, excellent food, and
friendship. Sequentially the annual Burdick Cobweb Concours was next on May 12th. The final count was 43 cars, good
food, and camaraderie.
Are you seeing a theme here? After 36 years in PCA, my club activities are enriched by all of you. One of the ways that we
connect as human beings is by being experiential. The next local CNY PCA rally is in October but a great way to see some
scenery and meet some people you may not have before. There are activities every month so no need to wait that long to
connect with us.
Porsches are performance automobiles that long to be driven. Many of us are loathe thinking about hammering down
the back straight at Watkins Glen with our foot all the way to the floor until we see the markers for the bus stop. What if
I can’t go fast enough? What if I miss the turn? What if I embarrass myself in front of thousands of onlookers? All valid
questions except for the last one, because besides the flag man at turn 5, “ain’t no one gonna see you do it.” The graduated
method would be to attend an autocross before going to a D.E. at any race track.

There are 2 autocrosses coming in July and August. Both of them will be very close to the spring rally site in Dryden, NY.
The TC3 campus is right off of route 13 and it provides a safe learning experience for a newcomer as well as a challenging
course for the long time enthusiast. The first event is July 22 while the second one is August 5th. The third autocross will
be in October when the leaves are turning golden hues. I almost forgot one thing about an autocross. Every other event I
have mentioned had food in the sentence. Unless you are bringing a gourmet bag lunch beyond bologna or peanut butter
then you are looking at the fast food places down by the Dunkin Donut. So you will still have the fellowship and Porsche
experience but with a bologna sandwich.
SCCA had an autocross on Sunday at Shoppingtown Mall. They use the same software that we do, AXWARE, and I
thought if I went worked timing then I would learn something. I took the Mini and learned that run-flat tires are as bad
as all the descriptions I have read in magazines and online. The other revelation is that BMW Mini has similar PASM
software that Porsche does. There is nothing as frustrating as hammering into a turn, using some trailing brake to set the
suspension and then mashing down the throttle to discover that some lawyer or engineer has set the computer to nanny
state slow. I was the model of consistency with 4 runs all within 7/10th of a second. Yes I was able to learn something about
the AXWARE software too. Oh the things I do for the club!!

OK!! We are knee-deep in a fantastic CNY PCA year! Our events are coming up fast and furious and we are having a
blast at each and every one of them.
We are just settling down from last weekend’s 48 Hours of Watkins Glen where our CNY Instructors did yeoman’s duty
passing their expertise on to the students who were chomping at the bit to learn how to quickly negotiate the race course.
Our thanks to this dedicated group of women and men! As are result of this effort, we in CNY have a father and daughter
team, Kim and George Barton, who participated in a driver’s education for the first time but are now ready to sign up for
another school. We are happy to say that we have another CNY father and daughter that are ready to sign up for a school
later this year. Don Fitterer received that commitment from daughter Myriah for his Father’s Day gift. Lin and I welcome
you ladies to the ranks-let’s show them how it is done!!!
Two weeks prior to 48 Hours, our stalwart CNY volunteers were out in force helping to bring off one of the biggest PCA
Club Races in the country. The Clash went like clockwork and, despite a bit of precipitation, was a very successful race.
Please check out the articles in this issue about our CNY Club Racers of whom we are very proud!
Rallies, tours, concours, WGI track laps and the EuroCar Show have rounded out the last two month’s activities for
our Region. I send a big “thank you” to all our members who have come out in force to support these fun events. The
organizers appreciate your enthusiasm and participation. That is what makes their efforts worth while!
Next on the docket is the Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen and the Continental 150 the weekend of June 29 through July 1.
This is where we can get a close-up look at the cars that run the Daytona 24 Hours. Both the DP cars (Daytona Prototype)
and GT cars (Grand Touring) and drivers will be on hand to see and meet. PCA will have a Porsche parking corral at
Turn 1 and tickets are still available at for $25.00 for the entire weekend. Please let me know if you are interested.
Chuck and I will be leaving the following week for the Porsche Parade in Salt Lake City, Utah. We are driving the 911
Carrera and very much looking forward to the trip and a little vacationing afterward. In case you are unfamiliar with
Parade, it is a week-long celebration of all things Porsche coupled with competitions, tech sessions, local tours, great
parties and food and lots of old and new friends. We hope you will consider joining us next year when Parade is in
Michigan—a bit closer to home.
Meanwhile back in good old CNY there is much more fun and frivolity on deck. Coming soon are 2 autocrosses, a summer
cookout and tour, our annual Summer Picnic and Kids’ Cross, Northeast Car Museum tour and much more. Check out
the announcements in this issue of Redline and come out and join us for some great fun!
You know why? Because it’s not just the car, it’s the people!

THE 2012 CLASH AT THE GLEN
The 2012 “Clash at the Glen”, Zone 1 PCA Club Race, proved to be as exciting and interesting as any Club Race around
the country. In fact, it was even more interesting due to Mother Nature who decided to deposit some liquid on the track
at several times during the Friday practice and Saturday Sprint Races.
It was during the Sunday Enduro Races, timed 90-minute long races which include a mandatory 5-minute pit stop, that
the skies opened up and the rain pelted down. Some drivers decided that discretion was the better part of valor, but
many decided to give it a go. Most were successful and well rewarded with great experience if nothing more.
CNY had 4 drivers participating in the weekend’s racing events. Brian Watson in his normally-aspirated 944 said that
because of his experience driving on dirt tracks, he really loves to race in the rain. His expertise has even earned him
the nickname “The Rain Man” from the Blue Lightening driver and crew. The name definitely fits as Brian started his
Enduro 59th and finished 20th—a great accomplishment under any weather conditions.
Brian reports: “I had a very successful weekend at Watkins Glen last week. Saturday sprint races yielded a 3rd and a
2nd in class as well as a full 3.5 seconds off my best time over the course of the day (previously 2:27:3 down to a 2:23:6). Sunday it rained - remember that rain is my friend in my low horsepower car and I tried to use it to the best of my
advantage. I started 59th and finished 20th with a second in class.” Steve Vasina participated for the second time this year in his gorgeous, robin’s egg blue 914-6. This car is expertly and
meticulously prepared and maintained by Jack Vasina, the driver’s Dad—as only a caring Dad could do. The car looks
fantastic and runs like a ……….well, it runs really well!! Steve did a great job qualifying and lowering his lap times in
spite of the fact that he runs in the “big dog” class. Competition is stiff but Steve can run with those guys and proved it
at this year’s Clash.
The aforementioned Blue Lightening entry driven by Gene Ramondi and crewed by CNY members in force, also had a
good weekend. The day before the event though, not so much!! Gene had an encounter of the horrible kind and had to
jump in his back-up 944 on race day. See all the details in the Blue Lightening saga in this issue of Redline.
CNY’s Bill Slowkowski was on hand for the 2012 Clash again this year in his 993 Cup car. Bill is currently living in
Colorado so his commute to race at The Glen was significant. Bill reports that he had a great weekend and finished 2nd in
class in both heats and 10th overall.
Our congratulations to all our CNY drivers on their efforts and accomplishments at this year’s Clash. We are proud of
each of you gentlemen and are happy for your success!
As all the Clash drivers would be quick to state, this event would not be possible without the dedicated efforts of a vast
and knowledgeable group of volunteers. I am proud to say that CNY had the largest number of volunteers at the 2012

THE 2012 CNY PCA COBWEB CONCOURS
What a great event! Great people, great cars, great food and a great location!! The sun was shining, but who cared? We
were inside the mall at Driver’s Village. It was clean – and that was “cool”!
On May 12, 40 Porsches gathered for CNY PCA’s annual People’s Choice Cobweb Concours. Our Chairpersons, Jill and
Jack Vasina did a find job with this event. They arranged the Porsches by class so as to ease the judging process for fellow
members. There were 5 classes to cover any and all of the cars entered.
We enjoyed a delicious lunch at the Brick House Café, right there in the mall, while the ballots were being tallied. There
was lots of conversation and comment on the beautiful array of Porsches that came out for the event.
After lunch the awards were announced. Beautiful trophies were provided and presented by Burdick Porsche. The
awards went three-deep in each class. The winners were:

CONGRATULATIONS TO GUS AND ALLISON
Anxiously moving through the crowd on our Spring Rally, Gus was proudly showing pictures of the new baby to all who
would look and listen. The baby arrived quite recently and both Mom and Dad just blush with happiness and pride. Next
is to name the little one and I’ll bet it will be perfect and fitting.
Entering their world at just over 1,700 pounds it came on the scene with all its teeth, able to move around and ready to go.
Oh sure! It was a tough time for Allison, but she hung in there and bit down on a stick when she saw the price tag. Just
feed that baby a little high test and the kid is ready to go.
Seriously now, the new arrival is a 1960 Porsche 356 T-6 silver coupe. We expect Allison and Gus to bring her out to meet
us at an event very soon.
When one Porsche is not enough, buying a second one--especially a 356--will cure all your blues. We all congratulate
Allison and Gus on their new pride and joy. There are miles of fun and driving pleasure ahead for this happy three some.

CNY PCA 2012
FAMILY PICNIC, CAR SHOW AND KIDS’ CROSS
On Sunday, August 19, 2012, Central New York PCA will hold a Family Picnic, Wash and Shine Car Show and Porsche Kids’ Cross.
This will be a relaxing day designed to check out some beautiful Porsches, fraternize with our car buddies, enjoy some good summertime food, kick back, put your feet up and enjoy a fine summer day in the shade of tall trees with cool lake breezes brushing past you.
Now you might ask: “Where can we find such a spot?” Well, I will tell you.
We will be at back at beautiful Taughannock Falls State Park on Route 89, just north of Ithaca again this year, BUT at a different
pavilion. We have secured the Creekside Pavilion this year—see directions below. This is a beautiful, covered pavilion, right on the
lake front offering beautiful vistas of Cayuga Lake. This is a great opportunity to enjoy our beautiful Finger Lakes. Don’t miss it.
The Porsches will be parked for display on the grass under the tall trees with beautiful Cayuga Lake in the background. This is a
perfect setting to take some great photos of your favorite car!
One of the highlights of our Family Picnic has proven to be the “Porsche Kids’ Cross”. We will lay out a little autocross course
and the kids can participate with any “vehicle” they would like—scooter, tricycle, bike—whatever they want to bring! (Sorry, no
motorized vehicles.) We will have all the proper goodies—a tech inspection, a drivers’ meeting, timing equipment and awards!! So
bring out the kids and grand kids, they will have a great time!!

Time: 11:00 AM park Porsches on the grass between our pavilion and the lake.
(We have a special permit to park on the grass.)
12:00 Noon – Porsche Kids’ Cross. Be sure to bring your “vehicle”
of choice and your helmet. 1:00 PM Picnic Lunch - CNY PCA will provide the main course, table ware
and soft drinks. Please bring a dish to share. (If you would like
something else to drink, please bring it with you.) Where: CREEKSIDE PAVILION *North Entrance* Taughannock Falls State Park,
2221 Taughannock Park Road, Trumansburg, NY. (Route 89) – 8 miles north
of
Ithaca, 4 miles south of Trumansburg. Directions below.
Attractions: The beautiful Taughannock Falls which cascade 215’ into a pool below (one
of the highest falls east of the Rocky Mountains) hiking trails, swimming
beach and fishing.
Bring: A dish to pass, a comfortable chair, something to play with (a baseball and
bat, volley ball and net, horse shoes, croquet set, Frisbee, swim suit, etc.),
Porsche stories and a smile. That’s all you need!!!
Cost: $5.00 per person and a $7.00 per car Park parking fee.

LIMEROCK CLUB RACING

BLR went to Lime Rock and had a pretty successful event. Brian Watson took 1st in SP1 in both his races. Unfortunately there was
only 1 car in class. This was his first time ever at Lime Rock and he improved a lot from Thursday morning to Sat afternoon. His last
race Sat he was mixing it up with two SP2 cars all race long and it looked like he was having a BLAST. When I talked to him after the
race he had a very big smile on his face and said something about that was some of the best racing he had ever done. His car ran mostly
problem free, just had an issue with the mass airflow sensor that we were able to fix without too much drama. Brian was seriously
melting his tires. He was running good consistent laps, clean running, mixing it up with other cars not in his class. He had an excellent
event, really enjoyed his first time there.
Gene ran mostly problem free also. There is a rub in his LF corner which we tried several things to fix with limited success. This
resulted in cording that tire on his old set of tires. We raised the front suspension a bit and cut away some plastic things in the LF wheel
well which made for less rub but didn’t eliminate it. Gene also got faster every run and in the last practice before qualifying was the
fastest E class car. Gene qualified 3rd in class, he was pretty close to the 2 cars in front of him. Gene finished 2nd in class in both his
sprint races. The first race the winner was slowly pulling away the whole race and the 2nd race the winner got a several second gap
in the first few laps then the gap stabilized. The last several laps the gap was shrinking but Gene got caught in some traffic that were
having their own battle and he couldn’t get thru. Gene had 2 very good starts and was running pretty quick laps right from the start
which is a good improvement for him.
The weather was very cold on Thursday, Brutally cold and windy on Friday and merely cold on Sat. Friday morning the wind caught
Brian’s brand new car tent which was weighed down with tires and strapped in place with bungee cords and wrapped it over Gene’s
trailer. We caught it before it went completely over and a bunch of people downwind helped pull it back. That was the end of that tent
it had bent & broken tubes with torn fabric.
Brian and Gene were in different run groups so we were VERY busy looking after 2 cars.
We stayed in a B&B that was within walking distance of the track. Extremely convenient but I never want to go back there again. It
was an old house (1880’s-1920’s) that was just an Eclectic collection of clutter. The owner was a woman from Long Island who was
heavy-duty into racing. There was car related stuff everywhere. No room to put our stuff down. The shower stall was considerably
smaller than those found on cruise ships. Refrigerator was packed full of stuff when we got there. There was barely a place to put a
coffee cup down in the kitchen. Signed and framed posters of various drivers & cars everywhere. There were lots of pictures of her
with Paul Newman and her with other famous drivers. Every room had car magazines in baskets. The resident cat was jumping on our
beds in the middle of the night until we figured out to close all the doors. You couldn’t stand up straight in the bathroom. I needed at
least another foot of headroom. But other than that it was nice.....

The event sponsor, Danbury Porsche, was giving rides around the track during lunch in a variety of new Porsches. I managed to get
a 3 lap ride in a Cayenne Hybrid which was very interesting. Andy also got a ride in a Cayenne. They were letting people drive if they
wanted but I got shut out of that. I wanted to hitch a ride in the Panamera but we just ran out of time. They had 2 Cayennes, a Boxster,
a 991 and the Panamera. This was an excellent promotional idea. I was impressed at the way the hybrid switched over from electric to
gas absolutely seamlessly. This was a V6 and it had some pretty good grunt down the straight.
I was glad I went, we had a great time. As usual, it was a lot of work and a lot of fun. I am very tired this morning and I can’t wait for
the Clash. GO BLR!!!!!

SAY HELLO TO THE BOB & JAN FILSINGER
The Filsingers are in their third year of CNY - PCA membership with fire in their eyes and now all of you are going to
learn more about this dynamic duo.
Both are NY born and bred, Bob in Syracuse and Jan is from Warrensburg, NY. Bob graduated from the U. of Vermont
with a BSME and Jan got her degree as an OCC Music Major. This little song bird benefits the marriage as I heard a
rumor that Bob needs a bushel basket to carry his tunes in. I’m kidding, Bob.
Mr. Bob has a 40+ year career of selling surgical needles to the medical world. He also is a proud retiree from the
Army Reserves and we all say thank you Bob for your service. Jan’s career has been as a 30 year member of the staff at
Community General (Upstate) Hospital as a billing specialist. Pres. Joyce knows Jan’s work ethic with it’s difficulties and
intense work from her years at the U. of Rochester’s Strong Hospital.
Bob has two sons ages 32 and 36 and Jan has two daughters ages 35 and 26 and a son who is 19. It appears that Bob has
a lock on his Porsche but Jan’s ’83 Camaro T-Top is still hiding her keys from her son. Ask Jan about that Chevy as it is
a story unto itself! They do the buddy up on some additional interests and hobbies too. They enjoy boating, snow skiing,
snowmobiling and they love to travel as so many of us do.
Bob learned to drive on a 1960 Buick and has been downsizing his cars ever since. Jan had a European learning
experience in a Fiat. Is there a difference here? For the Porsche fans of this mark in our Porsche gang Bob’s first car was
a ’64 Rambler. Now Jan on the other hand came on stronger with her first 4-wheeler, it being a ’63 Ford Galaxy.
Robert was introduced to the Porsche mark while in college in 1967. It was a buddy was fighting to keep alive. It was
an “older” 356, that’s what we worship Bob, but it had his interest and later Porsches got his money. They come to us
driving a beautiful ’85 Carrera Targa that on our Porsche museum tour event the Targa top was out of sight for these
fresh air kids. Their sporting life has some other cars currently in their stable; a ‘651/2 Mustang, a 1972 Mustang and that
aforementioned Camaro T-Top.

Their first CNY event, now I’m talking Porsche, was
our opening day event at Watkins Glen. Remember the
rain? It was at that event that we hooked-em! This ties in with their greatest Porsche activity and that is driving. The
2011 fall tour had them begging for more plus they asked me not to leave out the tech sessions that keep their interest.
So please won’t you all say hello to two certified car nuts and now great CNY Porsche buddies; talk it up and enjoy the
company of Bob and Jan Filsinger.

“Return to Stuttgart”

By mid-February, half-way through the ski season, we knew the chances were slim for salvaging what was a poor season,
and indeed, snowfall remained low, resulting in a relatively mild dry season similar to the weather for the past several
years in Europe that has been wreaking havoc with glaciers in the Alps, but not this winter, this year, Europe was caught
in a deep freeze with plenty of snow. A Swiss friend reported cold temperatures that reminded him of the winter he spent
in Potsdam, NY. A quick check for airline tickets during April Spring break revealed prices that were quite reasonable
despite Easter coinciding with spring break. And, to our delight, round trip tickets into Stuttgart often cost less than
flights into the more commonly used alpine gateway cities of Munich and Zurich. We made reservations and booked
flights.
When traveling into the Alps, we usually drive directly to our destination soon after our flight arrives. However, this
time, Chrystal and I were not in any hurry to leave Stuttgart; we wanted to see the new Boxster that was recently introduced at the Geneva Auto Show and featured in all the automotive magazines. We knew US dealers did not have the
car yet, and neither did any European dealers. However, the dealership at Porsche Platz is no ordinary dealer; it is the
factory dealership. If there were new Boxsters on display anywhere, it would be there. Thus we chose to stay overnight in
Stuttgart before heading south into the Alps.
The Stuttgart airport is located south of the city in Echterdingen. There we had a choice of hotels, but we knew and
highly recommend the Holiday Inn. Most Americans will find the hotel similar to Holiday Inns on this side of the pond,
except they have better coffee and offer a full German breakfast buffet that includes the usual things: cereals, yogurt,
eggs and morning beverages, and then adds a variety of sliced meats, cheese, and of course, a choice of great European
breads and rolls, and all is included in a very favorable room rate.
The Holiday Inn is within easy walking distance to the local train station. Like the U-Bahn, the S-Bahn that serves the
suburbs is fairly easy and inexpensive to use. The automated touch-screen ticket machines accept credit cards and provide instructions in English. Like clockwork, a train runs into Stuttgart every 20 minutes, it does so faster and far less
expensively than driving, and avoids the hassle of parking.
Travel time from Echterdingen to the stop at Neuwirtshaus (Porsche Platz) is just over 30 minutes, and that includes a
transfer of trains in the city center at the Hauptbahnhof (main train station). Unfortunately, as we learned on arrival, all
retail stores including the Porsche factory dealership were closed on Good Friday. So the closest I came to seeing the new
Boxster was standing next to a full size decal that was stuck to the inside of the showroom window! The fact that there
were no new Boxsters on the showroom floor was a small consolation.
However, the Porsche Museum next door was open. Having been to their old museum twice and the new museum two
years ago, one might think that we would pass on a repeat visit. On the contrary, the museum is such a treat that we
found our second visit to be just as interesting as our first.

Inside, the first stop for Chrystal was the coffee bar. There you can enjoy a pastry and espresso while you watch mechanics on the other side of a glass wall repair and restore vintage cars. As it

was a holiday all was quiet, but on normal weekdays this shop is busy. If I recall correctly, this is where the PCA raffle
car was restored.
Our second stop was at the top of a long escalator that ends in the main exhibition hall with the Type 64 body from 1939.
Ferdinand Porsche designed the car for the planned Berlin-to-Rome race. We see in this aerodynamic design the elements carried on to the first Porsche cars, and through to the modern Porsches of today. Those Porsche cars of interest,
from the 1948 356/1 to the latest examples, are found on display throughout the museum for your visual -- and listening
-- enjoyment.
Listening enjoyment? That’s right! All museum cars are maintained in running condition. On occasion, Porsche Classic
mechanics appear with flexible exhaust tubes so they can dump exhaust gases through discreet trap doors in the exhibit
hall floor while they fire up the engines on vintage Porsches.
Without going into the details of all the cars on display, I have included a few photos of the museum, and a few photos of
my favorite cars. I would mention that the museum owns far more cars than the eighty or so that can be shown. Thus,
the exhibits are always being changed, which makes repeat visits such a treat. During our visit, special attention was
given to the 911. Every Porsche fan loves the 911, and on display was my favorite, one that was never imported to North
America. This was often the case years ago, but my favorite was introduced in 2009 as the limited edition 911 Sport Classic. The car is easily recognizable in the photos as a modern 911 but with a retro duck tail and Fuchs wheels. We should
all be sorry they choose not to import this model because the name, Sport Classic, says it all.
In addition to the beautiful cars, the museum building itself is a work of art. Since inception and completion, the building has been described as floating or hovering over Porsche Platz. Certainly from the frontal view it looks that way, but
it was not until I was waiting for the S-Bahn that I had time to walk around to the back side of the museum. Standing
there, I realized the entire top of the building is suspended over the ground floor, thus the observation is not an optical
illusion; the museum is in fact hovering over Porsche Platz!
Soon we departed by S-Bahn and were back in Echterdingen. Located immediately beside the train station is the newly
opened Echterdingen Bräuhaus. There you can grab a cold beer and hot bratwurst in their friendly bar that offers a full
dining menu, and we did just that. And, since we were a bit tired from our overnight flight, we appreciated the Bräuhaus
as a good place for a drink and quick bite before our early turn-in for the night.
Twelve hours later, free of jet-lag, we awoke, had breakfast, packed our ski gear into our trusty VW Golf rental and
headed south for Austria. If you are thinking we should have had a Porsche, consider this: a VW might not be a Porsche,
but with Porsche’s failed attempt to take-over VW, I think it is safe to say that a Porsche is a VW, and further, for our
winter excursion into the mountains, we came to appreciate the Golf’s front-wheel drive.

Weekend traffic was a little heavy on the autobahn. Fearing we might hit a Stau (traffic jam) and wanting to explore
the countryside south of Stuttgart, we took secondary scenic roads that led us past the impressive Hohenzollern fortress
castle and on to Bregenz. As we entered Austria and started the climb in elevation, rain turned into a late winter snowstorm. We were pleased to have opted for snow tires. Back at home, we had the ski season that never was. In the Alps,
they were having the winter that would not end. The next morning, April 8, Easter Sunday, Chrystal and I awoke to find
a fresh blanket of powder snow covering the landscape and our car. Over the

course of the week, we had three more days of snow, and three days filled with blue skies and glorious sunshine.
Many years ago, the father of my best friend in college said, “If there is Heaven on Earth, it is located in the Austrian
Alps.” He of course was a skier who had skied the Alps in the postwar 1950s. We could not agree more, and it is not just
about the skiing. For us car enthusiasts, the easy accessibility by car to the beauty of the Alps and the alpine roads is
what makes the driving experience in Europe so special. Within Europe, the autobahns make Germany a special place to
drive. Many stretches remain free of speed limits. On one occasion, several years ago, I drove the 60 miles from Garmisch to Munich in 30 minutes, an average speed of 120 mph. However, having had that thrill, I now prefer to drive the
secondary roads, especially in the Alps, and particularly in winter, which is why, as long as we are able, we will continue
to make return visits. We encourage all our Porsche friends to do the same.

WATKINS GLEN “OPENING DAY”
Score – The Bad Weather Day Team - 2 & Fun Day Porsches – 0
Last year it was wind and driving rain. This year it was rain and thick fog that dropped down and rose back up on
different parts of the track on nearly every lap. Well, I must say it was one of the few times the weather man got it right.
Now it is Monday and I’m looking out my window and see two to three inches of snow on the ground! But it’s April 23!!
We didn’t have any snow during the winter and now we have snow in April. There are plows out on our roads and they
are putting SALT down.
But you know what? It still didn’t stop us from having fun on Opening Day at Watkins Glen International Race Track!
The count and the signatures on the waver proved that some 29 of the brave, the proud and the somewhat disturbed of
CNY PCA had arrived on the scene. We all met at Savard’s Restaurant on Franklin Street in Watkins Glen for a hearty
breakfast. We planned on having us one heck of a good time in spite of Mother Nature. After our hellos and chat time
we finished our coffee and gathered in the parking lot to set our program in motion. After a brief drivers meeting and
distribution of literature on the original course and the International Motor Racing Research Center, also located in
Watkins Glen, we were off on our adventure!
We headed out on our tour of the original Watkins Glen Grand Prix Road Course. This is a 6.6 mile route, starting
and finishing on the main road through Watkins Glen, which then loops through the hills above the village, across stone
bridges, past gullies and over railroad tracks. This constituted the original course used between 1948 and 1952. After
finishing our lap we peeled off toward the new WGI race track. This was really neat because a number of our attendees
had never driven on the old course before. I find that very cool. Now they can say to all their friends “we did it”.
Well, as they say, “you pays your money and you takes your chances”. It cost $25.00 for three laps of the track and even
in the rain we kept a good pace and had three laps of the full 3.4 mile road course. What happens in the rain happens on a
dry track as well. But when it rains, everything just happens a lot quicker. The drivers of our talented group experienced
no problems at all. CNY member Art Peck in the WGI pace car, guided our members at a good clip through turn 1, the
bus stop, the down hill esses, the boot, the off-camber, through turn 11 and back on the front straight.
There is something very special for all of us who have run these two race courses. That my friends, is to understand the
great history of the cars and drivers that preceded us on those fabled surfaces. Joyce and I are on that course for our 39th
year and even we old timers thrill at this unique opportunity to drive the road course where racing history has been made.
If you have not participated in this opportunity before, please plan to do so next year. It is a piece of racing history not to
be missed by any automotive aficionado.

ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL TECH SESSION
On April 14th a Tech Session was held at John Hajny’s Garage in Vestal. The day was beautiful with the temperature in
the sixties and not a cloud in the sky. That could explain why so many folks decided to drive their beautiful Porsches. I
counted 25 Porsches which included 914s, 944s, 911s, Boxsters, Caymans and even a Gold 928.
Many conversations took place outside of John’s garage as we all checked out each other’s car. The lunch bell rang and
all 32 of us went inside to enjoy the pizzas and baked goods. With stomachs full, John began the tech session using a 944
engine mounted on his engine stand.
The main idea that John was conveying was the understanding of the condition of the electrical systems that operate
these engines. As usual, John was very detailed explaining the function of each component and the importance of sound
electrical connections and wiring. He had examples of failed electrical components and deteriorated wires and connectors.
His demonstration was thorough and I believe everyone went away with a better understanding of those systems.
A big “Thank You” to John for graciously opening up his garage and providing us with some more insight into the cars
that we love to drive. For those that could not make the tech session, please plan to attend next year. You will not be
disappointed!!!!

JOHN - THE GREAT ONE - PREDICTS RELAY DOOM
He, John Hajny, warned us during his Tech Session and it happened – unfortunately TO ME!
On our way home from John’s 2012 Tech Session, we stopped for gas in Horseheads. When the tank was full and all was
buttoned up, I turned the key and heard the starter motor whirr but the engine wouldn’t fire. Like no fuel--no spark--no
nothing! We had the fuel pump replaced last year so I doubted that that was the problem. After waiting over an hour and
continuing to attempt to start the car, still nothing. So Joyce called AAA and we were brought home on a flat-bed truck.
Totally embarrassing!! Thank goodness it was dark! The next morning the 928 started immediately, just like always.
The next Sunday morning Joyce and I were driving to Watkins Glen for the second day of WGI’s Opening Weekend for
our pace car driving responsibilities when the demon struck again! Some 9 miles or so out of Dundee, heading due south
and while at speed, my engine just quit--totally unlike this fine automobile. It just died. I coasted slowly and pulled into
a safe spot on the road side and began to pray. Prayer deteriorated to complaining which in turn led to vulgar language
and was quickly followed by uncontrollable tears. Please, hear my plea and answer me! JOHN, how I can correct my
ways and cure this mechanical spell you placed on me?
But wait! I may have a way to avoid going on the hook for yet another tow home. After John’s warning during his Tech
Session, I had called the 928 Tech Advisor listed in Panorama and he worked me through how to resolve this issue prior
to my next drive. He was excellent and also gave me a web site for a wiring diagram of all fuses and relays, their position
and their purpose when all is working properly. I placed that diagram in the pocket folder with my owner’s manual and
therein lies the success of listening to John and plugging into help from PCA.
After some fiddling and switching relays around (while kneeling on the wet ground and being rained upon) I finally got
it right and SUCCESS--the car started. I was able to substitute another relay from the electrical panel (with the same
number code) and everything then worked except my horn.
I owe my success to John and his advice to always carry an extra relay. It won’t take you too long to guess what I will buy
next for my 928. Yup, extra relays and fuses and they will always be available in all my cars from now on.
Thanks, John! That little gem of knowledge saved the day for us!

THE ZONE 1 CONCOURSE & RALLY
SUCCEEDS BIG TIME!
Bouncing back from some declining numbers this year’s Zone1 is back in business and the numbers will
hopefully grow from here. The days were switched and the Concourse was held on Saturday leaving a
number of the show cars to be driven on the Sunday rally. Another reason for the stunning turn out was the
perfect whether.
Joyce and I left on Friday and on the way we met up with Jennifer, our Zone 1 Rep., and Scott Webb, quite
by chance. Scott was driving their white Porsche 1991 C 2 Carrera that they purchased in California a short
time back. So we toured on together and arrived at the Sheraton host hotel on or about 4:30. We joined
numerous other Porsches that had already checked in.
The host location, the Sheraton Hotel, was a familiar setting to most as a number of the early days Zone 1 tech
sessions had been held there in years past. With the concours being held now on Saturday it was a get to work
time and we went to the washing area and the wax on – wax off routine began. From there we went inside
and met some of the old gang and many from the new gang and that is always enjoyable. We retired early for
some much needed sleep knowing well it was back to prepping the car very, very early.
We were all up and at ‘em before 7:00 AM doing what you would think as we knew we had to face the nitpicking judges. As the time evaporated we got set for a far too long a tour to the show site. My morning blues
from the traffic clogged drive disappeared when we saw the lawns in front of an elegant stone and brick Auto
Museum. What a beautiful setting (just look at the picture) and know that it was a great site for the event.
One note is that the field of contestants for the judging and display cars exploded and the crowd was to say
the least large, I mean large!
Then disaster struck. Joyce and I were assigned to a judging team and we set out to make some new
ENEMIES by our scoring of those class cars we were assigned. No, not really, it was an enjoyable experience
and that is what it’s all about. We were assigned the early 911’s as well as the cars from 1990 thru 1998. The
cars in both fields were well prepared and it was a real challenge to judge. The scoring got tight but in the end
one black 911 turbo swept the others aside for a just win in its class.
Trophy time on the field of battle brought us a real surprise. In a large and excellently prepared class we
placed second in the mid range years of the 911’s (78 thru 89). Regarding the car that beat “6 SHOOTER”
we knew that if we had doubled our work time on my car we would still fall in behind his score.. Just to let
you know Scott Webb also took a second and he was high as a kite as this was his first judged concours event.
He turned into a beam of light when he received his trophy. Now Scott, work harder!

Best in show was a 356 A outlaw coupe that was finished to the 9’s and while I had voted for a ‘54 356 cab that
I thought would walk away with the big trophy once again I was wrong. There was no denying that the “old
ones” were extremely well done and the judging was tough. The 356’s and all but a few of the 911’s and a
handful of water coolers were of Parade quality worthiness.

The Saturday night dinner was a real treat once everyone found the restaurant. Let’s face it the closer you get
to Boston the crazier the driving gets and between all the new and old roads packed with traffic and the high
speed free ways it’s just plain crazy. Our dinner was at a very unique place and in addition to the great food
we had a surprise in store for us. Norm Turbe magically appeared, poof, there he was and “abnormal Norm
joined us for dinner and as always Norm was a perfect fit in this crowd.

We finished the day at the host hotel with a frenzy of ordering of some crazy ice cream delights and then hit the
sack once again a little early. Is bed time at or about 10:30 PM at these events or is this just another sign of my
advancing age?
The rally, ah yes the rally. For the first time in our Porsche career at a zone 1 event we failed to finish and took
a D Q (that’s not Dairy Queen Gang) as we became hopelessly lost. Oh, not that we did not enjoy those parts of
New Hampshire we saw it’s just that the rally was totally inside the state of Massachusetts. Hmmm, what can I
say here to make it the rally masters fault? Absolutely nothing! Except that the two of us just plain screwed up.
Fortunately we spotted another Porsche and quietly asked permission to tuck in behind and meekly followed
along to the parking lot at the restaurant. One cancellation is that we enjoyed a great Jean Noroski style
Chinese lunch buffet, with and without garlic.
The rally was sponsored by the Bose Corporation and the first six placements in the Rally got some fine Bose
equipment for their efforts while Joyce and I just sat there and cried. There were two additional awards one for
the longest distance driven to the event and the longest time recorded by the best looser. We couldn’t even win
that award and that’s just how bad it was for Joyce and me. I will say that with a record crowd of rally teams
once again encouraged by the perfect weather the rally was very enjoyable. All those quaint homes, beautiful
New England neighborhoods and some real curvy yet painfully slow speeds gave us time to see the country.
The event was a gimmick rally and it was pure fun. Oh yes the numerous sights to identify were tricky and at
the same time fun to look for and that kept the speeds down. Many historic spots were seen dating back to the
American Revolution and even when we were lost it was very enjoyable.
All in all it was a blast and we can all thank Jennifer Webb and Dan Degan along with their support staff
of Zone 1 volunteers for making this event pure enjoyment by giving us all a terrific weekend. So I would
encourage anyone who is looking for some fun next year and a great opportunity to meet some great folks in the
regions of Zone 1 to get involved. Come on and attend next years Zone 1 Concours and Rally.

CNY PCA DRIVE AND DINE WITH SOMERVILLES
Ann and Mason Somerville have made us an offer we can’t refuse!! They have invited us to their home for a light brunch,
a ride through the southern Adirondacks and northern Oneida Country and then back to their home for an old-fashioned,
potluck cookout and summer party! What’s not to like about that?
Is there any better way to spend a Sunday in July than enjoying your favorite car and your car friends? Most likely not, so
this promises to be a relaxing and fun day.
Ann and Mason say: “come prepared for relaxing activities, including fishing in our pond (bring your gear), tennis,
basketball, walk in the woods on maintained trails--or not as one wishes. Raspberries may be in season so bring your pails
and appropriate clothing if you wish to pick wild berries”.
We will meet at Ann’s and Mason’s home in the morning, chat with our fellow CNY members, enjoy some light
refreshments and then set off for a nice drive planned by Mark Schultz. Why Mark? Well, because he is responsible for
the Somervilles affection for a certain German marque -- so he gets to lead the “parade” of Porsches.

TRI-REGION TOUR TO SEE THE PORSCHE EXHIBIT
AT THE SARATOGA AUTOMOBILE MUSEUM
The planning for this event started back in February when Chuck and I conspired with Sue and David Schwaner from
Finger Lakes Region and Babs and Tom Lyons from Niagara Region to hold a joint event to tour to Saratoga Springs to
visit the beautiful Saratoga Automobile Museum currently housing a Porsche exhibit.
We chose the date of May 26 and devised a plan to coordinate meeting places along the Thruway to accommodate folks
from Buffalo to Utica. This was an excellent opportunity to have members from these 3 Regions meet, get to know each
other and see their respective Porsches.
The day arrived and Mother Nature cooperated brilliantly. Lots of tops went down for the run to Saratoga Springs. 25
cars full of CNY members participated in this tour as well as 1 motorcycle – not a Porsche but a fine German bike nonethe-less. 10 more cars from Finger Lakes and Niagara Regions rounded out the impressive caravan of Porsches heading
east.
Out first stop was at the Village Pizzeria and Restaurant in Middle Grove where we met Caren and Todd Fisher from
Hudson Champlain Region. Todd is a Director at the Saratoga Museum and an old Porsche friend. He recommended
the restaurant and it was a great suggestion. Our tables had been set up on the secluded and landscaped patio, most
conducive for our members to get to know each other and to exchange Porsche talk.
Then we were off on the final leg to the Museum. Once there, our CNY Porsches took center stage and filled the lawn in
front of the Museum. It was a sight to behold and drew much attention.
After a brief introduction from Todd and Sue Carbonaro, Acting Director, we were free to explore the entire Museum
at our own pace. In addition to several stunning examples of race cars including a 904, 908, 910 and 914-6, there were
many other gorgeous examples of the Porsche marque. Among them was a RS America, a slant-nose 911, a 959, a 356
SC (Caren’s and Todd’s car), our own Mark Schultz’ 356 Cab, a 356 Roadster, a 928, a Gmund 356 and a Speedster.
Absolutely outstanding is about all you can say about this exhibit.
This Museum is extremely well done with historic information on display as well as the cars. All vehicles are
professionally exhibited and it is a joy to see them. The Porsches have moved on but the Museum has a schedule of
coming exhibits that would interest anyone. If you are ever in the area, please stop by and take a look. You will not regret
it.
Our CNY attendees sure won’t forget this day of fabulous cars and great PCA camaraderie!

THE GLIMMERGLASS TOUR
CNY PCA’S 2012 FALL TOUR
The 2012 version of our CNY PCA Annual Fall Tour will take us to the beautiful Leatherstocking Area of Upstate New
York. The term “leatherstoking” originated from the unique leather leggings worn by frontiersmen of the area. Located
just south of the Adirondacks, the region is rich in history and tradition.
Glimmerglass is the name James Fenimore Cooper gave to Otsego Lake in his “Leatherstocking Tales”. Located just 8
miles from our tour’s headquarters in Cooperstown, this beautiful lake is surrounded by rolling, wooded terrain and is
home to a wide variety of wildlife.
Our tour this year will be on September 21 – 23. We will meet in DeWitt on Friday morning and tour north up through
the southern Adirondacks where we will stop for a leisurely lunch. After lunch we will tour through more beautiful
scenery as we work our way down to Cooperstown.
Once everyone has settled in at the hotel, we will have our Friday evening Welcome Party, followed by dine-around-town.
On Saturday morning we will take a drive through the Leatherstocking area mapped out for us by our CNY Cooperstown
residents, Sherrie and Marc Kingsley. The Kingsleys are the proud owners of The Inn at Cooperstown, located right in
the heart of the village and are very familiar with the “Porsche roads” that we all prefer.
After our Saturday morning drive we will stop for lunch and then head into the Village of Cooperstown “where baseball
legends live”. We will have a group tour of the “National Baseball Hall of Fame” and then have free time to enjoy the
Village shops and sights. Saturday evening will find us at our banquet complete with the “dreaded Tech Quiz”. Just
kidding!! It’s going to be easy this year!
Sunday is open for you to explore the myriad of attractions and natural wonders in the vicinity of Cooperstown. We will
most likely have a group tour of the Fenimore House and The Farmers’ Museum, should you be interested in joining us.
Our headquarters hotel is the Country Inn and Suites located in the country just south of Cooperstown. We have
negotiated a room rate of $105 plus taxes, a night, double occupancy for standard rooms and $145 plus taxes, a night
double occupancy for extended rooms. Please call the hotel at 800 456-4000 to make your reservation. Be sure to state
that you are with the CNY PCA group.
Registration and more details will be available in the next issue of Redline. However, if you are thinking of joining us,
please make your room reservation soon as the standard rooms are limited.
Chuck and I are hoping this will be another memorable Fall Tour with our Porsche friends. Plan to join us and enjoy

Eurocar 2012 held on Father’s Day at Lorenzo State Historic Site, in Cazenovia, was the best yet
iteration of this show. There were 206 beautiful cars displayed on the field for the “peoples’ Choice” judging.
Everyone enjoyed the outstanding weather and was provided with good food by the Limp Lizard Barbecue.
There were 20 Porsches in the show with 18 coming from CNY PCA. Several other CNY PCA members
were in attendance but did not show their cars. Our club was awarded a blue ribbon for having the second
largest contingent supporting the show. CNY PCA swept the awards in the two classes that we were eligible to
enter:
Class 16 – Pre 1988 Porsches:

Second – Gerry Goldberg (356)
Third – Dave Cooley (911 Carrera)
Class 22 – 1988 and later models (all marques):

WAS REAL FUN IN THE SUN!
With the wonderful weather, beautiful Porsches and friendly participants he gave us a great event. So right off the bat we
send a hearty thanks to you Jeff for a job well done.
The rally route was a right up our alley. The roads and the scenery provided a perfect opportunity to relax and enjoy a
beautiful ride on this sunny Sunday. But remember, a rally is only a rally until you get lost--and then it becomes a road
race. Well, for a few of us (including the writer), the race was on.
I want to thank Wayne and Linda Kunkel for coming along as our official event photographers. When we saw Wayne, we
knew we were on course. So Wayne, where the heck were you when Joyce and I got lost?
Jeff picked the best spot in Dryden for our gathering after the event. The old Dryden Hotel had a room for just us and
was equipped with two TV monitors to watch the NASCAR crash fest at ye’ old Talladega! Here are the winners and, well,
