2009-10 - Manhattanville College
Quick Facts and Contents A staple in the New York region and an emerging program on the national stage, the Manhattanville College Athletic Department continues to bolster its reputation as a program on the rise in all areas: athletic achievement, academic success and overall participation. A program-record 305 Valiant student-athletes (nearly 20 percent of the student body) took part in intercollegiate athletics during the 200809 season, showcasing the continued and rapid growth of athletics at Manhattanville. Following the successful integration of the men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track teams last season, the program has expanded to a record 21 intercollegiate teams – including seven new teams established in the last two years alone. And teams at Manhattanville do not just compete, they win. Three Valiant squads (men’s basketball, baseball and men’s tennis) earned Freedom Conference regular-season championships in 2008-09 and both the men’s and women’s hockey teams spent much of the year with national rankings. Sixteen of 21 Valiant teams earned berths in their respective conference tournaments last year, including four conference championship game appearances. In all, Manhattanville teams posted an impressive .548 winning percentage (184-151-6) last season, with two Valiants teams also setting new program records for wins in a single season. On an individual level, many Valiant student-athletes were honored in 2008-09 as well. Men’s hockey forward Chris Trafford and women’s hockey center Holly Nonis became the 15th and 16th Valiants to earn All-American honors following the season, while the pair were two of four players to be named conference Player of the Year. Manhattanville athletes also earned three conference Rookie of the Year awards and 31 All-Conference honors. In the last 10 years, at least 30 former Valiants have went on to play professionally either domestically or overseas. But at Manhattanville, athletics is only one part of becoming a wellrounded student-athlete. In the classroom, Valiant athletes consistently achieve higher grade-point averages than the student body as a whole, as evidenced by the 3.202 Athletic Department GPA for the Spring 2009 semester. Every Valiant team recorded a team GPA of 3.000 or higher for the spring term, while a program-record 89 student-athletes were named Academic All-Conference honorees. Community service also continues to play a vital role in the studentathlete experience at Manhattanville, as each team performs hundreds of community service hours each year. In addition to active involvement with many local sports teams and youth organizations both on and off campus, Valiant teams sponsor events such as the women’s basketball “Pink Zone” night and the women’s hockey “Think Pink” event to promote cancer awareness. As a result of these and other efforts, the school was the recipient of two Jostens/NADIIIAA Community Service Awards in 2008-09, one of only 13 institutions honored and the only school to receive two awards. The service aspect of the Manhattanville studentathlete experience plays a large role in helping Valiant athletes fulfill the college’s mission of educating ethically and socially responsible leaders for the global community. 2 Manhattanville Quick Facts: • • • • • • 21 Varsity Sports Over 300 Student-Athletes 7 Sports Added in the Last Two Seasons 20 All-Americans (12 since 2003) Over 1,000 Service Hours Per Year Cumulative Department GPA over 3.200 “To the valiant of heart, nothing is impossible.” - Jacques Coeur (ca. 1443) 2009-10 Manhattanville Men’s Basketball Media Guide Table of Contents Quick Facts & Contents........................1 Head Coach Pat Scanlon......................2 Coaching Staff.....................................3 2009-10 Roster/Schedule.....................4 2009-10 Season Preview......................5 Returning Players........................... 6-12 Newcomers....................................... 12 2008-09 Season in Review............ 13-14 Game-by-Game Results................. 15-17 Record Books............................... 18-20 1,000-Point Scorers........................... 21 All-Time Roster.................................. 22 Facilities............................................ 23 Freedom Opponents.......................... 24 Manhattanville College.......... Scanlon has amassed a 92-47 (.662) career record and led the team to four conference championships (three regular-season and one tournament) in five years, including at least a share of the regular-season conference title in each of the last three seasons. The head coach currently sits third all-time in career wins in program history and has posted two of the four top single-season win totals at his alma mater, including a program-record 23 wins in 2006-07. His winning percentage easily ranks as the highest ever at the school, while Scanlon’s time on the Valiant sideline has coincided with the winningest five-year stretch in program history. Scanlon performed arguably his greatest coaching job in 2008-09, taking a team that graduated three 1,000-point scorers and four starters overall and leading it to a share of the Freedom Conference regularseason title and a berth in the conference championship game. One year after guiding a team that scored more than 80 points per game on the offensive end, Scanlon completely revamped the Valiants for 200809 and relied heavily on defense, ranking ninth in Division III and second in program history by allowing only 60.0 points per game – including allowing just 36 points on December 3 versus Eastern University, the fewest points given up by a Valiant team in nearly 10 years. Scanlon’s recruiting efforts also produced the Freedom Conference Rookie of the Year in freshman Trevoy Pointer. Off the court, Scanlon’s Valiant teams have also enjoyed tremendous success, staying highly involved with community service projects and improving their GPA in every semester. During the spring of 2009, the team had a cumulative grade point average of 3.20, with 14 players carrying a semester GPA of at least 3.00. Four of his student-athletes were named to the Dean’s List by achieving a GPA of 3.6 or higher. During the 2007-08 season, Scanlon led the Valiants to a 17-9 overall mark in their first season in the Freedom Conference, including a 9-3 mark in the conference that tied for first place and a berth in the semifinals of the conference tournament. The Valiants were one of the most exciting offensive teams in the country to watch, as the team ranked 29th in Division III and finished eighth in program history by averaging 80.8 points per game. One of his three 1,000-point scorers from that year, Donte Chisolm, inked the program’s first professional contact after the season by signing on with the Jersey Express of the American Basketball Association. In 2006-07, Manhattanville had the best season in program history, finishing the year with a school-record 23 wins and achieving winning streaks of eight and nine games over the course of the season. Under Scanlon’s leadership, the team was ranked nationally for the first time in program history and captured the program’s first-ever Skyline Conference regular-season and tournament championships, in the process earning the Valiants their first berth in the NCAA Tournament in 28 years. The record-breaking season, which also featured the program’s first win over a ranked team (#9 William Paterson University), was capped with Scanlon and his assistants honored by the Skyline Conference as the Coaching Staff of the Year. From 2004-2006, Scanlon’s Manhattanville teams went 35-22, with the 2005-06 squad finishing second in the Skyline Conference and advancing to the tournament title game before falling just short of an NCAA Tournament spot. The 2005-06 season included several memorable games, most notably Manhattanville’s thrilling 89-85 win over archrival Mount Saint Mary College in the Skyline Conference Semifinals, a game played in a jam-packed Kennedy Gymnasium. That team would go on to earn the top seed in the ECAC Metro Tournament, where they lost a triple-overtime heartbreaker to Kean University. In his first season as Manhattanville’s head coach in 2004-05, Scanlon led the Valiants to a 16-12 record, winning more games as a first-year coach than any mentor in program history. Under the rookie coach, the Valiants finished fourth in the regular-season standings and advanced to the Skyline Conference Tournament semifinals before falling to eventual league champion Farmingdale State College by a single point. In his first season following graduation from Manhattanville in 2003-04, Scanlon served as an assistant coach with the Manhattanville men’s basketball team under former NBA star Dean Meminger, helping lead the team to an 18-10 record. He also worked at the New York Stock Exchange as a clerk. In the offseason, Scanlon also serves as Director of the highly successful Valiant Skill Development Camps. He also previously worked as a volunteer coach at the prestigious Pete Newell Big Man Camp in Las Vegas for five years from 2004-08. One of the most durable and reliable players in Manhattanville men’s basketball history, Scanlon started 86 consecutive games in three seasons for the Valiants from 2000-03. In his four-year career as a Valiant, he became the 15th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point plateau by scoring 1,026 career points and averaging over 30 minutes per night. As a senior captain in 2002-03, Scanlon helped the Valiants to a 19-10 overall record (12-4 in the Skyline Conference) and berths in the Skyline Semifinals and ECAC Metro Quarterfinals, averaging Year Record Conference Postseason a team-leading 15.4 points and 34.1 minutes per game. He also received his master’s degree in Sports Business Management from Manhattanville in 2009. A native of nearby Bronxville, N.Y., and a graduate of Fordham Prep School, Scanlon earned Second Team All-Bronx honors from Newsday as a senior, serving as a team captain and leading his team in scoring. Scanlon currently resides in Rye, N.Y., with his wife Stefanie. 2009-10 Manhattanville Men’s Basketball Media Guide Manhattanville Coaching Staff Assistant Coach Mike Panella First Season • Manhattanville ’08 Mike Panella begins his first season as an assistant coach with the Manhattanville men’s basketball team in 2009-10, looking to continue his impact on the Valiant men’s basketball program by making the immediate transition from the court to the coaching staff. Panella will play a role in all aspects of the Manhattanville men’s basketball program, including academics, recruiting, scouting, planning practices and camps, and working with the team’s post players. Panella has been a member of the Valiant men’s basketball family since 2004, having spent five seasons with the team (including one redshirt season). His time with Manhattanville coincided with the most successful five-year stretch in program history, as the Valiants posted a 92-47 record over the last five seasons. Panella was a co-captain on last season’s Valiant team and was named the school’s Sports Medicine Student-Athlete of the Year for overcoming multiple injuries to start in all 27 games. Off campus, Panella has been a part of multiple camps and coached various teams in the New York area, including working at his alma mater Saint Francis Prep’s Basketball Camp and coaching the school’s varsity summer league team. He has also worked at the Carnasecca/Sarachek Basketball Camp, the Army Basketball Camp and the Triple Threat Basketball Camp, among others. He also assists head coach Pat Scanlon in running the Valiant Skill Development Camps in Purchase during the offseason. Panella graduated from Manhattanville in 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in management and is currently pursuing his master’s degree in Sports Business Management at the school. A native of Queens, N.Y., Panella currently resides in Purchase. Assistant Coach Ed Powell 13th Season • South Carolina ’69 The second longest-tenured coach in Manhattanville history, Ed Powell is back for his 13th season as an assistant coach on the Manhattanville bench and fifth coaching with one of his former student-athletes, Pat Scanlon, in 2009-10. Powell works with the guards in practice while actively recruiting, scouting and assisting with practice and game management. He was a vital member of the Valiant coaching staff that was honored by the Skyline Conference as Coaching Staff of the Year in 2006-07, the year that saw the Valiants win Skyline regular-season and tournament championships and reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1978-79. Powell joined the Manhattanville coaching staff before the 1997-98 season under former head coach Brian Curtin. He has seen the Valiants amass 11 consecutive winning seasons dating back to 1998-99 and make the postseason in 10 of his 12 years on the Valiant sideline. A former All-City star in the New York City Catholic School League, Powell learned from one of the best as a collegian, playing for Hall of Fame coach Frank McGuire at the University of South Carolina. McGuire, who led the University of North Carolina to the 1957 National Championship, won 550 games in his 30-year career, including 283 in 16 seasons at South Carolina. While at South Carolina, Powell also played under current New York Knicks President Donnie Walsh, who was an associate head coach under McGuire. Powell, a longtime social studies teacher in Westchester County, currently resides in Tarrytown, N.Y. Assistant Coach Leif Gagliardi Sixth Season • Manhattanville ’00 A standout on the basketball court for the Valiants during his playing career, Leif Gagliardi returns for his sixth season as an assistant coach on the Valiant bench with former teammate Pat Scanlon in 2009-10. As an assistant coach, Gagliardi is responsible for working with the Valiant big men while also assisting with scouting as well as practice and game management. Gagliardi was a key component of the Valiant coaching staff that was honored by the Skyline Conference as Coaching Staff of the Year in 2006-07, the year that saw the Valiants win Skyline regularseason and tournament championships and reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1978-79. Gagliardi scored over 900 points during his playing career, leading the Valiants to an ECAC Tournament berth in 1999. He posted his best season as a Valiant in 1998-99, when he led the team with 8.7 rebounds per game and ranked second on the squad with a career-best 12.9 points per contest. Gagliardi and Scanlon saw their playing careers overlap briefly during the 1999-00 season when, as a senior, Gagliardi averaged 11.4 points per game, second on the team, and played in 25 games for a club that went 13-12. Gagliardi works for Natexis Bleichroeder as an Assistant Director of the Executive Services Department. He is also an active participant in the Big Brothers program, serving as a mentor to others. Gagliardi currently resides in Yonkers, N.Y. 2009-10 Manhattanville Men’s Basketball Media Guide 3 Manhattanville 2009-10 Roster/Schedule # 1 2 3 4 5 10 11 15 21 22 23 24 31 32 34 42 50 55 Name Jay Ferriere Chase Hill DeVon Barnett Brian Bertucci Dave Garrison Jeff Ventura Glen Rodriguez Felipe Vargas Peter Mehmel Trevoy Pointer Angelo Laroche Lamar Glass Dave Reggina Armani Blackmon Mike Horgan Ivan Maggi Jack Railton-Woodcock Craig Augustine Yr. The Valiants lost three seniors and two starters from last season’s 17-10 squad, as guard Wesly Wicks ’09 and forwards Mike Panella ’08 and Jason Walsh ’09 spent their final seasons playing in Purchase. Panella, however, decided that five years were just not enough and returns this season in his first year as an assistant coach under Scanlon. Manhattanville will once again rely heavily on its defense, which ranked ninth in Division III and second in program history by allowing only 60.0 points per game. And one season after losing nearly 70 percent of the team’s offense, the Valiants will bring back almost 80 percent of its scoring from a year ago as the team looks for an improved offensive attack to hone in on a fourth consecutive conference title. BACKCOURT Manhattanville returns two starters and multiple key contributors in the backcourt in 2009-10, as the team looks to replace Wicks’ scoring and increase the offensive production from the perimeter. The trio of sophomore Trevoy Pointer and juniors Lamar Glass and Jay Ferriere will be the leaders of the team’s three-guard attack in 2009-10. Arguably the Valiants’ most important perimeter player made only four starts last year, as Pointer is back for his second season after averaging 12.4 points per game off the bench as a freshman. The reigning Freedom Conference Rookie of the Year, Pointer ranked third in the Freedom Conference with team-best 77.8 percent accuracy from the free-throw line while also ranking third on the team with 36 steals and fifth in rebounds with 84. Guard Jay Ferriere Ferriere was one of the best pure point guards in the conference last season, leading the conference with 134 assists (4.96/game) and finishing second with 56 steals (2.07/game) in 27 games. His assist total ranked him 10th on the school’s all-time single season list, and the junior will look for another productive season at the point this year. Glass was an effective weapon on both ends of the court for the Valiants as a sophomore and will continue to be one of the team’s most important players this season. The team leader with 29.7 minutes per game, Glass scored 7.2 points per game and led the squad with 24 three-pointers and 129 rebounds (5.0/game). On the defensive end, he was the team’s best man-up defender and always got assigned to the opponents’ top scorer, playing a vital role in the Valiant defensive success. Besides the team’s top statistical trio, the Valiants also have a deep corps of reserves to dip into for off-the-bench help as well. Senior DeVon Barnett will provide both offensive production and senior leadership this year, following a 2008-09 campaign in which he averaged 3.1 points per game off the bench. Despite the total, Barnett was usually on the court during the game’s crucial final minutes and hit some big shots down the stretch, connecting on a team-best 33.3 percent of his three-pointers. A group of five sophomores also will look for more playing time in 2009-10. Felipe Vargas took the floor in 16 games, including nine of the team’s last 11 games of the season, and recorded 16 points and 18 rebounds in limited action, while Jeff Ventura played seven contests last year and will hope for increased production in 2009-10. Classmates Chase Hill and Dave Garrison both sat out all of last season and will look to crack the lineup, while Dave Reggina takes part in his first season in Purchase after transferring from Bryant University. FRONTCOURT The Manhattanville frontcourt will be well equipped for another long postseason run this season, as the team returns one starter and its top seven scorers from last season’s group of forwards. The focal point of the Valiant frontcourt will once again be senior Angelo Laroche, who ranked third on the team with 10.7 points per game a year ago. The junior, who ranked ninth in the conference by shooting 48.4 percent from the field, also ranked third in rebounds (4.3/ game) and fourth in steals (26) in his first season as a starter in 2008-09. With a year of starting experience under his belt, expect Laroche to average double figures once again as a senior. Coming exclusively off the bench as a freshman, sophomore Glen Rodriguez will be another key player up front. Rodriguez averaged 7.7 points per game on the offensive end for the Valiants but was also a force on the defensive side of the ball, leading the team with 24 blocks (T-6th Freedom). The Valiants will also look to a pair of upperclassmen, senior Mike Horgan and junior Peter Mehmel, for increased roles this Forward Angelo Laroche season. Horgan played in 26 games last year off the bench and shot 40.5 percent from the floor while also hauling almost two boards per contest. Mehmel registered 3.7 points and 2.2 rebounds per game in 25 games and was also the team’s most accurate shooter in 2008-09, shooting 59.4 percent from the field. In addition, Scanlon has four returning sophomores looking to make a bigger impact on the Valiants this year. Jack Railton-Woodcock averaged 2.7 points per game in limited action and will give the team size up front along with Craig Augustine, who made three appearances off the bench. Classmates Armani Blackmon and Brian Bertucci also saw the court sparingly as freshmen but hope to provide some quality minutes off the bench this season. After losing just three players to graduation, Scanlon only brought in one freshman to bolster the forward corps, Ivan Maggi. The Buenos Aires, Argentina, native led his club team with 15.0 points per game a season ago and represented his city in the country’s national tournament, and will look for playing time off the bench in his first season with the team. SCHEDULE Scanlon has scheduled yet another very difficult slate in 2009-10, as the Valiant head coach has lined up six NCAA Tournament teams and five conference champions to challenge the Valiants. The team will be especially challenged during a brutal seven-game stretch from November 29-January 3 that will feature at least four NCAA Tournament teams from 2008-09. The Valiants also commence Freedom Conference play during that run, when the team faces off with the squad that defeated it in the conference title game last year, DeSales University, on December 2 in Center Valley, Pa. Manhattanville’s home conference opener follows three days later versus King’s (Pa.) College. Manhattanville will kick off the home portion of its 2009-10 schedule on November 20-21, when the team hosts the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, Connecticut College and John Jay College for the 33rd annual Castle Classic. 2009-10 Manhattanville Men’s Basketball Media Guide 5 Returning Players - Captains #34 MIKE HORGAN F • 6’5” • 225 lbs • Senior • Cork City, Ireland/Rutgers Prep (N.J.) 2008-09: Took the court in 26 of the team’s 27 games in his third season with Manhattanville … averaged 1.7 points and 1.9 rebounds per game in 13.5 minutes per contest … set new career highs in nearly every statistical category … shot over 40 percent from the field on the season … matched his career high with seven points and added five rebounds, two assists and two steals in a win over Middlebury (11/22), playing a career-best 24 minutes in helping the Valiants clinch the 2009 Castle Classic title … scored four points and hauled in a career-best eight boards at DeSales (1/12). 2007-08: Appeared in 15 games, earning three starts, as a sophomore … averaged 8.7 minutes per game … shot 42.9 percent from beyond the arc on the year … made his collegiate debut on November 20, 2007 in the Castle Classic against John Jay … pulled down a season-high six rebounds on November 11, 2007 against Hunter … grabbed at least three rebounds in five different games … set a season-high with seven points on November 20, 2007 against Hunter … matched his season-high in points once again with seven on November 30, 2007 against Ramapo. 2006-07: Did not play as a freshman due to illness. “ High School: Started high school at North Monastery (A.G.) in Cork, Ireland … played a year for the Argonauts of Rutgers (N.J.) But fifth-year head coach Pat Scanlon did a masterful job of turning one of the country’s most prolific offensive teams (80.8 ppg scored in 2007-08) into one of its best defensive squads, as the Valiants ranked ninth in Division III by allowing only 60.0 points per game last year. As a result, Manhattanville finished the year with a 17-10 record and earned a share of the Freedom Conference regular-season championship for the third consecutive season. Senior Wesly Wicks led Manhattanville on the offensive side of the ball last year, averaging a team-best 12.8 points per game while also finishing second on the squad in assists (52) and steals (41). Junior Angelo Laroche also played a big role in the Valiant offensive attack, netting 10.7 ppg and shooting a team-best 48.4 percent from the field. The young Valiant squad also relied heavily on its newcomers, with freshman Trevoy Pointer and sophomore Jay Ferriere making big impacts right away. Pointer was named the Freedom Conference Rookie of the Year after averaging 12.4 points per game and getting to the free-throw line a team-best 117 times in 27 games. Ferriere, meanwhile, was the facilitator of both the MVille offense and defense, leading the team with 134 assists and 57 steals. Manhattanville began the 2008-09 season at the Stevens Tournament, where the squad split two games against Washington & Jefferson College (67-61 win) and Stevens Institute of Technology (76-54 loss). Laroche led the team by averaging 18.5 points in the two games. The Valiants returned home for their home opener against #16 Rhode Island College. The home team hung with the Anchormen for much of the game but just couldn’t get a big bucket down the stretch in falling by a 69-57 score. Manhattanville came right back that weekend Guard Wesly Wicks 14 as hosts of the 32nd annual Castle Classic, earning wins over Medgar Evers College and Middlebury College to take home the title. Sophomore Lamar Glass was named MVP of the tournament after averaging 10.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game. Sophomore Peter Mehmel led the home team to a 92-65 win over Medgar Evers with a career-high 18 points thanks to perfect 8-for-8 shooting, advancing to the championship game. The team then took home its second straight Castle Classic title with a 74-63 win over the Panthers on Saturday. Following a close 65-59 loss at Hunter, the Valiants tuned up for Freedom Conference play and closed out November with a 65-51 triumph over Vassar College on Thanksgiving Weekend. Manhattanville began the conference schedule with an emphatic defensive performance against Eastern University on December 3, holding the Eagles to 11 field goals and 30.6 percent shooting in a 66-36 win. The 36 points allowed were the fewest given up by a Valiant side in nearly 10 years, since a 60-25 win over Pratt on January 12, 1999. The Valiants continued their winning ways by running their conference mark to 3-0 with wins over Alvernia University and Delaware Valley College. Pointer came off the bench to pace the Valiants in both games, netting 16 points in a 6553 victory over the Crusaders and then scoring a season-high 25 points in just 27 minutes in a 72-65 triumph over the Aggies. The team ran into a mini-funk following the DVC win, however, dropping three of its next four contests. The Valiants lost their first Freedom game of the year to Wilkes University on January 7, as the squad shot a season-worst 36.5 percent from the floor in a 58-49 defeat. After coming back to earn a 74-64 win at Misericordia University, the team dropped backto-back games at DeSales University and New Jersey City to fall to 8-6. Against the Bulldogs, the visitors fell behind by 15 points in the second half and nearly achieved a remarkable comeback before falling just short in the waning minutes. The team returned to the win column on January 17 at King’s (Pa.) College, as the Valiants held the Monarchs to just 17 first-half points on the way to a 62-53 win. Wicks led the Valiants with a game-high 18 points in 37 minutes of action in the win. That win began a string of four consecutive conference wins that catapulted the team to the top of the Freedom standings. Returning home versus FDU-Florham, Wicks again led all scorers, this time with 21 points, and Manhattanville connected on 21 second-half free throws as the Valiants earned a 72-65 win. Following a 71-58 win at Alvernia, the Valiants stared down first-place DeSales at Kennedy Gym and emerged with a 60-55 win and a share of first place in the conference. Down by seven points at halftime, the home team used a huge 18-0 run early in the second half to mount a comeback and take down the Bulldogs. Unfortunately for Manhattanville, the team fell into another rut after the DeSales win, losing three of its next four games for the second time Guard Trevoy Pointer in 2008-09. The Valiants dropped a surprising 7358 contest at Eastern – allowing 40 points more than in the teams’ first meeting of the year – that dropped the team to 8-3 in Freedom play. The team also suffered a very bitter defeat the next time out against William Paterson, as the team couldn’t hit its free throws down the stretch and dropped a 57-56 (OT) decision. After a 73-46 win over Delaware Valley and a tough 54-49 defeat at the hands of Wilkes, the Valiants turned it around once again to close the regular season with three wins that clinched a share of the Freedom Conference regular-season title. Despite not having a player score more than 10 points, the team began the run with a hard-fought 47-45 defensive struggle with Misericordia. Manhattanville clinched a top-two seed in the penultimate game of the regular season with a 63-53 win on Senior Night against King’s (Pa.), and then gutted out a 83-72 victory at FDU-Florham on the final day of the regular season to earn a share of first place in the final regular-season standings. Kennedy Gym was packed for the team’s first home conference tournament game since 2007 and the Valiants responded, earning a 63-57 win over Eastern in the Freedom semifinals. The Eagles jumped out to an eight-point halftime lead to keep the crowd quiet early on, but the Valiants rallied behind 15 points each from Laroche and Pointer to advance to the Freedom title game. The Valiants’ dream of a second NCAA Tournament berth in three seasons was not to be, however, as DeSales dealt Manhattanville a 72-58 loss in Center Valley to end the Valiants’ season at 17-10. Following the year, Pointer was named the Freedom Conference Rookie of the Year and Wicks was also named to the All-Freedom second team. Pointer’s honor made him the first Valiant to earn conference Rookie of the Year honors since Donte Chisolm in 2005. The team graduated three seniors after the season, as Wicks and classmates Mike Panella and Jason Walsh played their final games in a Valiant uniform in 2008-09. 2009-10 Manhattanville Men’s Basketball Media Guide Game-by-Game Results 1974-75 (8-11) Head Coach: Tim Cohane Individual game results unknown 1975-76 (10-17) Head Coach: Tim Cohane Purchase W 107-32 Sarah Lawrence W 100-60 Old Westbury W 69-46 New Paltz L 86-93 Upsala L 66-89 Dominican (N.Y.) Kennedy, Kennedy Gymnasium is the day-to-day home of the Manhattanville Department of Athletics and also serves as the home court for the Valiant basketball and volleyball programs. With balcony and ground-level seating for 1,000 spectators, Kennedy Gymnasium gives the Manhattanville teams that play inside it a loud and imposing homecourt advantage. With bleachers lining the near sideline of the court and a large balcony overhanging the bleachers, there is plenty of room for Valiant friends, family and fans to cheer on their favorite Manhattanville teams. The main gymnasium also includes a new scoreboard, a brand-new scorer’s table, as well as phone and internet access. Over the summer of 2007, new lighting was installed in the gym in order to enhance the fan and player experience. The Kennedy complex also houses a swimming pool as well as the department’s training room and strength & conditioning facilities. In the Spring of 2009, the men’s basketball program also unveiled new banners in the gym honoring the program’s three NCAA Tournament teams (1978, 1979 and 2007) as well as the 22 Valiants to reach the 1,000point plateau. Those banners proudly hang alongside the team’s 2009 Skyline Conference Championship banner and the program’s retired numbers. Head coach Pat Scanlon’s men’s basketball office was recently moved to the space immediately adjacent to Kennedy Gymnasium, allowing for easy access to and from the court for all team games and practices. Kennedy Gymnasium has seen countless postseason victories from the Valiant men’s basketball team in recent years, as the Valiants are 13-1 in conference tournament games at home since 1998-99. Arguably the most important postseason game at the gym came on February 24, 2007, when Coach Scanlon and the rest of the Valiant players cut down Kennedy’s nets after defeating Old Westbury in the Skyline Conference Championship game to celebrate the program’s first NCAA Tournament berth since 1979. Kennedy Gym also provides convenient access to the program’s strength and conditioning facilities and athletic training facilities, both of which are located on the ground floor of the building and are fully staffed year-round. Almost all of Manhattanville’s full and parttime athletic staff are housed within the Kennedy walls as well, with most residing inside the main athletics office on the main gym level. Locker Rooms Dedicated in October 1957 by the family of eventual United States President John F. Kennedy, Kennedy Gymnasium is the day-to-day home of the Manhattanville Department of Athletics as well as the home court for the Valiant basketball and volleyball teams. Kennedy’s main attraction, a basketball and volleyball arena, is flanked by strength, training, locker room and office facilities and is the operational home of all Valiant sports. All in-season sports have their own space inside Kennedy Gymnasium’s several locker rooms (one of which is pictured to the left), with each player allowed his or her own locker. Inside the fully-enclosed locker rooms, the coaching staff can address the team before and during matches, and the rooms are a perfect congregating spot for teams at any time throughout the season. The rest of the locker room facilities inside Kennedy Gym include full shower and locker facilities, as well as access to Manhattanville’s swimming pool, strength and conditioning facilities, and athletic training facilities. The offices of almost all varsity head and assistant coaches at the school are also located within Kennedy Gym, as are the offices of all Manhattanville athletics administrators. Kennedy Gymnasium is also host to several camps and local recreational groups during the summer. Manhattanville’s athletic trophies and banners, highlighting the program’s best accomplishments throughout the school’s distinguished athletic history, are also located inside the lobby and main arena of Kennedy Gymnasium. Strength & Conditioning Focused on the development of the student-athlete, the Manhattanville Department of Athletics views strength and conditioning as one of the most important developmental tools. The facilities inside Kennedy Gymnasium are a testament to that philosophy. The strength and conditioning department is housed inside Healthworks, a large, state-of-the-art weight and cardiovascular training facility located on the bottom floor of Kennedy Gymnasium. The room includes several power development stations, glut ham benches, decline abdominal benches and physioballs and cardiovascular machines. In late 2007, Manhattanville College opened a new Student Center in the center of campus that includes a first-class workout area for the general student population, thus making Healthworks the exclusive strength and conditioning home of Valiant student-athletes. Healthworks is supervised by Manhattanville’s Head Strength and Conditioning Coach, Corey Crane. Crane, along with his assistant strength and conditioning coach, is responsible for managing and providing the design, implementation, supervision and evaluation of the strength and conditioning program utilized by all 21 Valiant varsity sports. Athletic Training The Sports Medicine facilities at Manhattanville College are located inside Kennedy Gymnasium and are the place where all Valiant student-athletes come to receive comprehensive health care from any of Manhattanville’s three fully-certified, full-time athletic trainers. The athletic training staff has five main objectives: prevention of athletic injuries; recognition, evaluation and treatment of injuries that do occur; rehabilitation; health care administration and professional development. The athletic training staff also has on-campus access to state-of-the-art training methods, including ultrasound capability, electrical muscle stimulation and whirlpool treatments. Scott McIver, a veteran of nearly 20 years in sports medicine, is Manhattanville’s Head Athletic Trainer. McIver worked for the Valiants from 2000-02 following a 12-year stint as Associate Athletic Trainer at Pace University, and came back to the school for a second stint beginning in 2006. JR Barkamian joined the staff in August 2008 as Assistant Athletic Trainer after spending time at Division I Fordham University. The department also employs a full-time Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer to help coordinate the school’s 21 sports. 2009-10 Manhattanville Men’s Basketball Media Guide 23 Freedom Conference Opponents Delaware Valley College DeSales University Jan. 20 in Doylestown, Pa.; Feb. 16 in Purchase, N.Y. From kids, boy scouts, students. A letter was like a piece of gold, something you wanted to keep for the rest of your life.” When Salas got back to Manhattanville, he wanted to help his fellow soldiers overseas and approached former College President Richard A. Berman with an idea. Together with Berman and administrator Anne Gold, they launched the My Soldier program on February 14, 2004. Participants in the My Soldier program, who are not limited to Manhattanville students, send letters and occasional care packages overseas to boost the quality of life for American troops. A non-politically affiliated program, My Solider has been wildly successful, with participants from all 50 states and over 400,000 people in total, reaching more than 175,000 U.S. troops.
