2011-12 MBB Media Guide - Manhattanville College
Quick Facts and Contents A staple in the New York region and an emerging program on the national stage, the Manhattanville College Athletic Department continues to bolster its reputation as a program on the rise in all areas: athletic achievement, academic success and overall participation. More than 325 Valiant student-athletes (nearly 20 percent of the student body) took part in intercollegiate athletics during the 2010-11 school year, showcasing the continued and rapid growth of athletics at Manhattanville. With the announcement that the department will begin sponsoring women’s golf starting in 2012-13, the program has expanded to 22 intercollegiate teams – including eight new sports that have been established or re-established since 2007 alone. And teams at Manhattanville do not just compete, they win. Four teams earned conference regular-season or tournament championships in 2010-11 and three Valiant squads (women’s soccer, women’s hockey and men’s golf) appeared in the NCAA Tournament. 13 of 21 Valiant squads earned berths in their respective conference championships last year, including the eighth title in 12 seasons for the women’s hockey team and the second straight title for men’s golf. In addition, a pair of Manhattanville squads (men’s hockey and women’s hockey) spent much of the year nationally ranked while two more programs (men’s basketball and men’s golf) topped the list of teams receiving votes nationally in their respective polls over the course of the year. On an individual level, many Valiant student-athletes were honored in 2010-11 as well, including a pair of Freedom Conference Players of the Year and two Freedom Rookies of the Year to go with 32 combined All-Conference honorees. In the last 10 years, at least 35 former Valiants have gone on to play their sport professionally either domestically or overseas as well. But at Manhattanville, athletics is only one part of becoming a wellrounded student-athlete. In the classroom, Valiant athletes consistently achieve higher grade-point averages than the student body as a whole, as evidenced by the 3.20 Athletic Department GPA for the Spring 2011 semester and the fact that all but four Valiant teams recorded a team GPA of 3.000 or higher for the spring term. In addition, the department boasted its first CoSIDA Academic All-American in 27 years and a pair of CoSIDA Academic All-District representatives, while the department also shattered its previous best with 114 student-athletes named Academic All-Conference honorees. Community service also continues to play a vital role in the studentathlete experience at Manhattanville, as each team performs hundreds of community service hours each year. In addition to active involvement with many local sports teams and youth organizations both on and off campus, Valiant teams sponsor events such as the women’s basketball “Pink Zone” night and the women’s hockey “Think Pink” event to promote cancer awareness. As a result of these and other efforts, the school was the recipient of two Jostens/NADIIIAA Community Service Awards in 2009, one of only 13 institutions honored and the only school to receive two awards. The service aspect of the Valiant student-athlete experience plays a large role in helping Valiant athletes fulfill the college’s mission of educating students to be ethically and socially responsible leaders in a global community. 2 Manhattanville Quick Facts: • • • • • • 22 Varsity Sports Over 325 Student-Athletes 8 Sports Added Since 2007 25 All-Americans (21 since 1999) Over 1,000 Service Hours Per Year Cumulative Department GPA over 3.200 “To the valiant of heart, nothing is impossible.” - Jeanne d’Albret 2011-12 Manhattanville Men’s Basketball Media Guide Table of Contents Quick Facts & Contents........................... 1 Athletic Administration............................ 2 Coaching Staff..................................... 3-4 2011-12 Roster/Schedule........................ 5 Freedom Conference Opponents.............. 6 2011-12 Season Preview......................... 7 Returning Players...............................8-13 Newcomers...........................................14 2010-11 Season in Review.....................15 Game-by-Game Results.....................16-19 Record Books...................................20-22 1,000-Point Scorers...............................23 All-Time Roster......................................24 Facilities................................................25 Support Staff.........................................26 Manhattanville College......................27-28 Quick Facts and Contents On the Cover Quick Facts MANHATTANVILLE COLLEGE Left to right: Seniors Tevoy Pointer and Felipe Vargas Media Information BROADCAST: Most Valiant home games and select away contests this season will be broadcast live as either an audio or video stream via GoValiants.TV and WMVL 88.1 FM, with Assistant Director of Sports Information Sean Engel or Director of Sports Information Steve Sheridan calling the action both live from Kennedy Gymnasium and on location. Media Guide Credits 2011-12 Manhattanville Men’s Basketball Media Guide 1 Manhattanville Athletic Administration Director of Athletics Keith Levinthal Ninth Year • Hobart ’95 Keith Levinthal begins his ninth full year as Director of Athletics at Manhattanville College in 2011-12 and continues to establish the school as a regional and national leader in athletic success, academic achievement and community involvement. The architect and head coach of Manhattanville’s nationally recognized men’s hockey program before stepping aside in October 2011, Levinthal will now concentrate full time on keeping Manhattanville in the local, regional and national spotlight. Levinthal has led the Valiant athletic program to unprecedented heights in recent years, as Manhattanville has collected 52 conference championships – 26 regular-season championships and 26 tournament titles – in the last eight seasons alone. In that span, the program has also produced 27 conference Players of the Year, 15 All-American selections and one National Player of the Year. As a head coach with the men’s hockey team, Levinthal stepped aside with the most wins of any mentor in Manhattanville department history, posting a 202-84-28 (.688) record in 12 seasons and twice earning ECAC West Conference Coach of the Year honors. He left as the 14th winningest coach in NCAA hockey history (all Divisions) and sixth among Division III leaders in terms of winning percentage, and led the team to four NCAA Tournaments, four ECAC West Tournament titles and a pair of first-place finishes in the ECAC West regular-season standings. Under Levinthal’s guidance, Manhattanville as a whole continued its recent string of very successful seasons in 2010-11, as 15 teams participated in conference postseason play and four squads won a conference regular-season or tournament title. The Valiant women’s soccer, women’s hockey and men’s golf teams won conference championships and advanced to the NCAA Tournament during the season, while the men’s basketball team achieved the first D3Hoops.com national ranking in program history and the men’s golf team received votes in multiple national coaches polls for the first time. Off the field, a program-record 114 Valiant student-athletes were named to their respective conference Academic Honor Rolls as well, while the program also earned its first CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-American selection in 27 years and a pair of CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District honorees. In 2007-08, Levinthal guided the Athletics Department as it transitioned from the Skyline Conference to the Freedom Conference and also reintroduced volleyball and cross country programs to the school. The Valiants saw immediate success in its new conference as two teams clinched Freedom Conference regular-season championships and three programs won conference tournaments in advancing to the NCAA Tournament. The women’s hockey team advanced to the program’s third National Championship game, while the women’s soccer team reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. Levinthal also led the Valiants to a record-breaking year in 2006-07, as six teams won conference championships and a program-record five teams qualified for the NCAA Tournament. His men’s hockey team spent 13 consecutive weeks as the top-ranked team in the nation and earned its first-ever berth in the national semifinals, while goaltender Andrew Gallant became the first Manhattanville student-athlete to be named a National Player of the Year. Six coaches were named as conference Coach of the Year, while a program-best four Valiant student-athletes were also named CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honorees. And, for the first time ever, Valiant teams won more league championships than any other Skyline Conference team. Levinthal saw immediate athletic success during his first full year at the helm, as all 14 of Manhattanville’s athletic programs participated in postseason play during the 2003-04 year. Four teams earned bids to the ECAC postseason tournaments, while the women’s ice hockey program earned its third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. In 2004, Levinthal also received the honor of beginning a four-year term on the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey Rules Committee, serving as one of 13 overall members and one of just four from Division III institutions. But in addition to athletic success, at the heart of every successful program lie sound resources for its lifeblood – its student-athletes. Therefore, Levinthal has made it a priority to provide the resources needed to create an environment in which Manhattanville student-athletes can achieve at the highest level in all areas: academically, socially and athletically. A 1995 graduate of Hobart College, Levinthal is committed to developing all aspects of the athletics program. In his tenure at Manhattanville, Levinthal’s agenda has included: Student-Athlete Development - Manhattanville continues to be on the cutting edge in the total development of its student-athletes. Valiant studentathletes have exhibited a strong presence and desire to serve the New York area. All varsity teams participate in outreach activities, positively impacting numerous area youth groups, hospitals, schools and agencies. Professionalism - Under Levinthal’s guidance, Manhattanville athletics received a much-needed face-lift. With a new website, logo, team colors and method of business, he has streamlined and energized the department. The result has been increased exposure to Manhattanville student-athletes, improved performance both on and off the field, and increased support from fans and alumni. Exposure - Manhattanville Athletics continues to maintain a strong presence on national and regional media outlets. Levinthal has helped increase the program’s media opportunities as well as displaying the values of the Valiants constantly in the public eye. Assistant Director of Athletics Julene Fisher Seventh Year • Marymount ’02 Julene Fisher is in her seventh year as Assistant Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator, and her ninth year overall within the Manhattanville Athletic Department in 2011-12. As Assistant Athletic Director, Fisher is responsible for assisting the athletic director in an administrative capacity. She handles the scheduling for all of Manhattanville’s 21 sports and also handles travel accommodations and assignment of the department’s student workers. A former Assistant Sports Information Director at Manhattanville, Fisher also assists the Sports Information Department by serving as a statistician for home baseball games and select other home contests. Fisher began her tenure at Manhattanville as an administrative assistant in the Manhattanville Development Office before moving over to the Athletic Department. Fisher graduated from Marymount College in 2002 as an English/Journalism major. She served as the editor-in-chief of Marymount’s student newspaper, The Cormont, and also was a four-year letterwinner in both swimming and softball at the school. In television, she worked in conjunction with ABC News, the Discovery Channel and HBO to produce the hit series, “The Justice Files”, as well as HBO’s Emmy award winning documentary “In Memoriam: New York City, 9/11”. 2 2011-12 Manhattanville Men’s Basketball Media Guide Manhattanville Coaching Staff Head Coach Pat Scanlon Eighth Season • Manhattanville ’03 Pat Scanlon ‘03, MS ‘09 finished his seventh season as head men’s basketball coach at Manhattanville in 2010-11, and continues his goal of building the Valiants into a perennial contender both in the Freedom Conference and nationally. Scanlon has amassed a 118-71 (.624) career record in seven seasons and has led the team to four conference championships (three regular-season and one tournament) in his time in Purchase. He currently sits third all-time in career wins in program history and his winning percentage easily ranks as the highest ever at the school, while Scanlon’s time at the helm has coincided with the winningest seven-year stretch in program history. Manhattanville posted its sixth winning season in seven years under Scanlon in 2010-11, as the Valiants finished with a 14-11 mark, including an 8-3 record versus non-conference opposition. The year started historically well for the team, as Manhattanville got off to the best start to a season in program history (10-1) and as a result earned the program’s first-ever national ranking with a #25 spot in the January 4, 2011 D3Hoops.com poll. The first semester was capped by the program’s second-ever appearance at Madison Square Garden, where the Valiants defeated local rival Purchase, 66-54, on December 19. Although the team struggled down the stretch, Trevoy Pointer still earned a spot on the All-Freedom Conference second team, the seventh straight year that the Valiants had at least one All-Conference honoree. Scanlon’s Valiant teams have always found success off the court, staying highly involved with community service projects and improving their GPA in every semester. During the spring 2010 semester, the team had a cumulative grade point average of 3.18, with 12 players carrying a semester GPA of at least 3.00. The Valiants had another successful year both on and off the court in 2009-10, as Angelo Laroche and Pointer were named to the All-Freedom Conference team and the squad boasted a conference-best eight players on the MAC All-Academic team. Also, Laroche and DeVon Barnett received multiple awards from Manhattanville before graduation: both received Castle Pins, while Barnett earned the President’s Prize and Laroche earned the Barbara Boggs Sigmund Award. In 2008-09, Scanlon took a team that graduated three 1,000-point scorers and four starters overall and led it to a share of the Freedom regular-season title and a berth in the conference championship game. One year after scoring over 80 points per game, Scanlon completely revamped the team and relied heavily on its defense, ranking ninth in Division III by allowing only 60.0 points per game. He also produced the Freedom Conference Rookie of the Year in Pointer. During the 2007-08 season, Scanlon led the Valiants to a 17-9 overall mark in their first season in the Freedom Conference, including a 9-3 mark in the conference that tied for first place and a berth in the semifinals of the conference tournament. One of his players, Donte Chisolm, inked the program’s first professional contact after the season by signing on with the Jersey Express of the American Basketball Association. In 2006-07, Manhattanville finished the year with a school-record 23 wins, including winning streaks of eight and nine games. The record-breaking season also featured the program’s first win over a ranked team (#9 William Paterson). In addition, Scanlon and his assistants were honored by the Skyline Conference as the Coaching Staff of the Year. Under Scanlon’s leadership, the team was ranked nationally for the first time in program history and captured its first Skyline Conference title, earning the program its first berth in the NCAA Tournament in 28 years. From 2004-2006, Scanlon’s Manhattanville teams went 35-22, with the 2005-06 squad finishing second in the Skyline Conference and advancing to the tournament title game before falling just short of an NCAA Tournament spot. The 2005-06 season included several memorable games, most notably Manhattanville’s thrilling 89-85 win over archrival Mount Saint Mary in the Skyline Conference Semifinals, a game played in a jam-packed Kennedy Gym. That team would go on to earn the top seed in the ECAC Metro Tournament where they lost a triple-overtime heartbreaker to Kean. In his first season as Manhattanville’s head coach, Scanlon led the Valiants to a 16-12 record, winning more games as a first-year coach than anyone in program history. Under the rookie coach, the Valiants advanced to the Skyline Conference Semifinals before falling to eventual league champion Farmingdale State by one point. During the 2003-04 season, Scanlon served as an assistant coach under former NBA star Dean Meminger at Manhattanville, helping lead the team to an 18-10 record. He started 86 consecutive games in three-seasons from 200003, scoring 1,026 points and averaging over 30 minutes per night during his four-year career. As a senior and captain, Scanlon led the Valiants to a 19-10 overall record and a 12-4 mark in the Skyline Conference, averaging a teamleading 15.4 points per game. Scanlon earned his bachelor’s degree in history from Manhattanville in the spring of 2003. He also received his master’s degree in Sports Business Management from Manhattanville in 2009. 2011-12 Manhattanville Men’s Basketball Media Guide 3 Manhattanville Coaching Staff Assistant Coach Jamal White Second Season • Bridgeport ’10 Jamal White is in his second season as an assistant coach with the Manhattanville men’s basketball program in 2011-12. In his first season as an assistant in 2010-11, White played a role in all aspects of the men’s basketball program. He kept stats on the bench for all Valiant games and also assisted in practice preparation, including facilitating practice drills, creating and implementing offensive plays, and advising players on improvements in fundamentals. A graduate of the University of Bridgeport, White spent four seasons as a student assistant with the Purple Knights’ Athletic Department. In his role, White supervised home event management for the Division II school and oversaw over 90 student workers during set-up and breakdown for home athletic events, while also serving as a student-athlete host for visiting teams and officials. White received his bachelor’s degree in business management from Bridgeport in 2010 and is currently pursuing his graduate degree in sports business management at Manhattanville. Assistant Coach Ed Powell 15th Season • South Carolina ’69 The second longest-tenured coach in Manhattanville history, Ed Powell is back for his 15th season as an assistant coach on the Manhattanville bench and sixth coaching with one of his former student-athletes, Pat Scanlon, in 2010-11. Powell works with the guards in practice while actively recruiting, scouting and assisting with practice and game management. He was a vital member of the Valiant coaching staff that was honored by the Skyline Conference as Coaching Staff of the Year in 2006-07, the year that saw the Valiants win Skyline regular-season and tournament championships for the first time and reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1978-79. Powell joined the Manhattanville coaching staff before the 1997-98 season under former head coach Brian Curtin. He has seen the Valiants amass 11 winning seasons dating back to 1998-99 and make the postseason in 10 of his 13 years on the Valiant sideline. A former All-City star in the New York City Catholic School League, Powell learned from one of the best as a collegian, playing for Hall of Fame coach Frank McGuire at the University of South Carolina. McGuire, who led the University of North Carolina to the 1957 National Championship, won 550 games in his 30-year career, including 283 in 16 seasons at South Carolina. While at South Carolina, Powell also played under current New York Knicks President Donnie Walsh, who was an associate head coach under McGuire. Powell, a longtime social studies teacher in Westchester County, currently resides in Tarrytown, N.Y. Assistant Coach Leif Gagliardi Eighth Season • Manhattanville ’00 A standout on the basketball court for the Valiants during his playing career, Leif Gagliardi returns for his eighth season as an assistant coach on the Valiant bench with former teammate Pat Scanlon in 2010-11. As an assistant coach, Gagliardi is responsible for working with the Valiant big men while also assisting with scouting as well as practice and game management. Gagliardi was a key component of the Valiant coaching staff that was honored by the Skyline Conference as Coaching Staff of the Year in 2006-07, the year that saw the Valiants win their first Skyline regular-season and tournament championships and reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1978-79. Gagliardi scored over 900 points during his playing career, leading the Valiants to an ECAC Tournament berth in 1999. He posted his best season as a Valiant in 1998-99, when he led the team with 8.7 rebounds per game and ranked second on the squad with a career-best 12.9 points per contest. Gagliardi and Scanlon saw their playing careers overlap briefly during the 1999-00 season when, as a senior, Gagliardi averaged 11.4 points per game, second on the team, and played in 25 games for a club that went 13-12. Gagliardi works for Natexis Bleichroeder as an Assistant Director of the Executive Services Department. He is also an active participant in the Big Brothers program, serving as a mentor to others. The Valiants return nine players from last year’s squad in hopes of erasing those memories and bringing the team back to its customary perch near the top of the Freedom Conference. The coaches around the Freedom Conference expect the team to return to form this season as well, as the Valiants were picked to finish third in the conference preseason coaches poll. Manhattanville earned 33 points and a pair of first-place votes to finish behind first-place DeSales (45 points, three first-place votes) and runner-up Misericordia (39 points, two first-place votes), and just ahead of fourth-place Wilkes (30 points). The squad is not without holes to fill headed into the season, however, as head coach Pat Scanlon needs to replace three full-time starters lost to graduation and four key players overall from last year’s team, all of whom did different things to contribute to the team’s success. Due to that roster turnover, the Valiants will rely heavily on their senior class this season, as seven of the team’s returning letterwinners are in the Class of 2012. The team also returns three sophomores and welcomes five newcomers into the fold this season as the Valiants look to make up for the lost production and produce a more efficient and effective team on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. BACKCOURT Of course the focal point of the Valiant offense once again this year will be senior Trevoy Pointer, who averaged a team-leading 16.4 points per game last season to rank sixth in the Freedom Conference. As a junior, he also ranked seventh in the conference in assists (72) Guard Trevoy Pointer and third in the Freedom in steals (45) on the way to All-Conference second-team honors, his third straight year with conference postseason recognition. Pointer enters his senior year 19th on the school’s career points list with 1,103, and with a repeat of his junior year would move all the way into the program’s all-time top five in scoring. But the Valiants will need scoring from more than just Pointer if the team wants to get back to the postseason. Hoping to help in that task will be seniors Felipe Vargas and Jeff Ventura, both of whom look to improve their offensive output in their final seasons. Vargas is the team’s second-leading returning scorer after averaging 7.0 points in just 16.0 minutes per game off the bench, and will look to make his mark as the team’s most accurate three-point shooter at 44.0 percent (22 for 50). Ventura averaged 3.2 points per game in 23 appearances last year and also looks to make an impact from beyond the arc – 58 of his 65 shots last season came from three-point land. In addition, sophomores Chrys Malone and Taylor Mazzei look for improvement in their second seasons as well. Malone played in 19 games as a backup point guard and will get the chance to take on the starting role this season, while Mazzei will also look for more playing time after taking the court in seven games a year ago. Adding to the team’s depth will be a trio of newcomers, as sophomore Colin Campbell and freshmen Mike Murray and Wills Flynn enter their first seasons in Purchase. Campbell comes to Manhattanville with some collegiate experience after one season at Florida State College at Jacksonville (NJCAA), while both Murray and Flynn will look to make in impact right away in their first college season. FRONTCOURT The Valiants will have to rely on some new faces up front, as the team’s top two forwards in both scoring and rebounding from a year ago are not playing due to either graduation or injury. With the graduation of Peter Mehmel ’11 and the loss of senior Glen Rodriguez, who will miss the season due to offseason surgery, there are plenty of players looking to step up and contribute. The only returners with any real starting experience are sophomore Jack Bramswig and senior Ivan Jovicic, and both players will be needed on the offensive end. Bramswig averaged 5.4 points and 4.0 rebounds per game as a freshman in 2010-11, and as the team’s second most accurate shooter (52.2 percent from the field), he will need to take on a more active role both offensively and defensively as a sophomore. Jovicic started five games last year but mostly provided an instant dose of offense off the bench in his first year with the squad, and will need to improve his shooting percentage to make a major impact in his second year with the team. Seniors Armani Blackmon, Brian Bertucci and Jack Railton-Woodcock also look to make an impact in their final seasons with the team Forward Jack Bramswig as well. Blackmon did not play as a junior after averaging 2.7 points per game as a sophomore, while Bertucci saw some time as a late-game substitute and grabbed 16 rebounds in 65 minutes. Railton-Woodcock, meanwhile, had eight points in 16 minutes last year and will look to utilize his height on the boards. Two newcomers also will vie for playing time in the frontcourt, as freshman twins Calvin Terry and Maurice Terry come to Purchase from Brooklyn after high school careers at Abraham Lincoln High School. SCHEDULE The Valiants will face a customarily difficult non-conference slate to go with a grueling 14game Freedom Conference schedule in 2011-12, as the Valiants look to duplicate last season’s terrific start but also close strong to earn a berth in the Freedom Conference Championship. The team starts off the year with a threegame homestand that is capped off by the annual Castle Classic, which this year is going away from the tournament format to avoid conference games. The Valiants will take on Saint John Fisher on Friday night at 8 p.m. and then will face NCAA Tournament participant Hartwick on Saturday at 5 p.m. In all, the squad will face four teams that made the NCAA Tournament last season. The Freedom Conference schedule also begins at Kennedy Gym, when the Valiants host Eastern on November 30 at 8 p.m. With the exception of two early-season conference games, it’s mostly non-conference contests during the fall semester until January 11, when a game at FDU-Florham kick starts a string of 12 straight Freedom Conference affairs to conclude the regular season. The Valiants hope to be back in the conference postseason this season, with the semifinal round set for February 22 and the championship game scheduled for February 25 at the home of the higher seeds. 2011-12 Manhattanville Men’s Basketball Media Guide 7 Returning Players - Seniors #22 TREVOY POINTER G • 6’2” • 185 lbs • Senior • Dallas, Texas/Skyline 2010-11: Named to the All-Freedom Conference second team and named the team’s MVP … started all 25 games for the second straight year … finished sixth in the Freedom Conference with a team-leading 16.4 points per game … led the team and ranked third in the conference in steals (45), while also finishing second among Valiants in assists (72), fifth in rebounds (92) … hit 48.0 percent (157 for 327) of his shots from the field and 40.0 percent (18 for 45) from beyond the arc … scored at least 10 points in 20 of 25 games … averaged over 20.0 points per game in the first three games of the year to earn Freedom Conference Player of the Week honors for the first time … averaged 15.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 2.0 steals per game in two wins over #24 DeSales (12/1) and King’s (12/4) to take the POW honor for a second time … scored 21 points with four assists and four steals in the Valiant win over Purchase at Madison Square Garden (12/19), giving him his third weekly conference honor … had a career game against King’s (1/29), scoring a career-high 32 points – including the 1,000th point of his career – and sunk the game-winning shot in double overtime … combined with 24-point effort against Wesleyan (1/25), easily won his fourth Freedom Player of the Week honor … nearly cracked 30 points again with a 29-point effort in the penultimate game of the regular season at Delaware Valley (2/15). 2009-10: Second Team All-Freedom Conference honoree … the only Valiant to start all 25 games on the season … led Manhattanville in multiple categories, including points (14.4) and minutes (32.0) per game, assists (59) and steals (45) … also shot 46.0 percent (144-for-313) from the field and grabbed 4.7 rebounds per contest to rank second on the team … reached double figures in scoring in 22 of the team’s 25 games, including the first 12 games of the year, and led the Valiants in scoring a team-best 13 times … went off for a season-high 23 points on 8-of-11 shooting and added eight rebounds, four steals and three assists in a win over Hood (11/28); added 11 points the next day against Heidelberg (11/29) on the way to Freedom Conference Player of the Week honors … had a season-best five steals to go along with 16 points and nine caroms versus King’s (12/5) … recorded his first collegiate double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds against #17 Franklin & Marshall (1/3) … hit 8 of 10 shots from the field for 16 points in a win over Eastern (1/23) … also had 19 points against DeSales (2/3). 2008-09: Freedom Conference Rookie of the Year … appeared in all 27 games and made four starts as a freshman … finished second on the team with 12.4 points per game … reached double figures in scoring a team-high 20 times … was the team’s best free-throw shooter on the season, hitting 77.8 percent (91-of-117) of his attempts from the line … also shot 45.8 percent (116-of-253) from the field … netted 13 points in his first collegiate game against Washington & Jefferson (11/15) … exploded for a season-high 25 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the field and a 9-of-10 effort from the line at Delaware Valley (1/3) … grabbed a season-best seven rebounds and scored 10 points against King’s (1/17) … knocked down a season-high 11 free throws on 12 attempts in a win over FDU-Florham (1/21) … led the team with 20 points on 8-of-10 shooting in the Freedom Conference Championship game at DeSales (2/28) … named Manhattanville’s Male Freshman of the Year. Kennedy, Kennedy Gymnasium is the day-to-day home of the Manhattanville Department of Athletics and also serves as the home court for the Valiant men’s and women’s basketball and women’s volleyball programs. With balcony and ground-level seating for 1,000 spectators, Kennedy Gymnasium gives the Manhattanville teams that play inside it a loud and imposing home-court advantage. With bleachers lining the near sideline of the court and a large balcony overhanging the bleachers, there is plenty of room for Valiant friends, family and fans to cheer on their favorite Manhattanville teams throughout the season. The main gymnasium also includes a new scoreboard, a brand-new scorer’s table, as well as phone and internet access that allows all Valiant games inside Kennedy Gym to be broadcast as either an audio or video stream. New lighting was recently installed in the gym as well in order to enhance the fan and player experience. In addition to the main gym, the Kennedy complex also houses a full-length swimming pool as well as the department’s strength & conditioning and sports medicine facilities, which are located on the ground floor of the building and are fully-staffed year round. In the Spring of 2009, the men’s basketball program unveiled new banners in the gym honoring the best players and teams in program history. One represents the program’s three NCAA Tournament teams (1978, 1979 and 2007), while two others list the 22 Valiant men to reach the 1,000-point plateau. Those banners proudly hang alongside the team’s 2007 Skyline Conference Championship banner as well as the program’s retired numbers. Head coach Pat Scanlon’s men’s basketball office was also recently moved to the space immediately off of Kennedy Gymnasium, allowing the coaching staff easy access to and from the court for all team games and practices. Almost all of Manhattanville’s full and part-time athletic staff are housed within the Kennedy walls as well, with most residing inside the main athletics office on the main gym level. Kennedy Gymnasium has seen countless postseason victories from the Valiant men’s basketball team in recent years, as the Valiants are 13-1 in conference tournament games on their home court since the 199899 season. Arguably the most important and memorable postseason game at the gym came on February 24, 2007, when Coach Scanlon and the rest of the Valiant players cut down the Kennedy nets after defeating Old Westbury, 87-68, in the Skyline Conference Championship game to celebrate the program’s first-ever conference title and first NCAA Tournament berth since 1979. Locker Rooms Dedicated in October 1957 by the family of eventual United States President John F. Kennedy, Kennedy Gymnasium is the day-to-day operational home of the Manhattanville Athletic Department as well as the home court for the Valiant basketball and volleyball teams. Kennedy’s main attraction, a basketball and volleyball arena, is flanked by strength & conditioning, sports medicine, locker room and office facilities, as well and a fulllength swimming pool and dance studio. All in-season sports have their own space inside Kennedy Gymnasium’s several locker rooms (one of which is pictured to the left), with each player allowed his or her own locker for the full season. Inside the fully-enclosed locker rooms, members of the coaching staff can address their team before, during and after games, while the rooms also serve as a perfect congregating spot for teams at any time throughout the season. The rest of the locker rooms inside Kennedy Gym include full shower and locker facilities, as well as access to Manhattanville’s swimming pool, strength and conditioning facilities, and athletic training facilities. The offices of almost all varsity head and assistant coaches at the school are also located within Kennedy Gym, as are the offices of all Manhattanville athletics administrators. Manhattanville’s athletic trophies and banners, highlighting the program’s best accomplishments throughout the school’s distinguished athletic history, are also located inside the lobby and main arena of Kennedy Gymnasium. The gym also plays host to several camps and local recreational groups during the summer and throughout the school year. 2011-12 Manhattanville Men’s Basketball Media Guide 25 Support Staff Strength & Conditioning Focused on the overall development of the student-athlete, the Manhattanville Strength&ConditioningstaffmaximizestheathleticperformanceofValiantathletes byusingthemosteffectiveandefficienttrainingtechniquestocompeteinjuryfree at the highest level of competition.
