The$Bishop,$with$his$Council,$is$responsible$for$articulating$a$vision$to$the$diocese$that$is$credible$and$hopeful.$
In$order$to$do$this$we$have$drawn$on$the$inheritance$of$faith,$ancient$tradition,$our$own$context$and$openness$
to$God$in$order$to$respond$to$key$drivers$that$are$present$within$the$life$of$the$church$and$outside$it.$We$have$
articulated$this$hope$in$a$document$called$‘The$Learning$Church$in$the$Diocese$of$Bangor’.$This$commitment$
involves$ our$ becoming$ learning$ disciples$ who$ let$ the$ marks$ of$ Christ$ be$ found$ in$ every$ area$ of$ our$ common$
life.$The$concept$of$a$Ministry$Area$is$central$to$this$approach.$The$redefining$of$church$life$has$involved$much$
more$than$geographical$and$Constitutional$factors$because$it$involves$a$different$way$of$doing$ministry$and$of$
living$as$a$faithful$disciple$of$Christ.$The$inherited$pattern$of$one$clericYone$church$can$no$longer$be$sustained$
on$financial$grounds$and$in$an$age$where$travel,$belonging$and$identity$establish$community$rather$than$just$
geography,$ the$ current$ parochial$ structure$ no$ longer$ serves$ the$ purpose$ for$ which$ it$ was$ once$ created.$
Churches$ which$ offer$ many$ ministries,$ are$ varied$ in$ their$ activities,$ which$ evolve$ new$ structures$ of$
governance,$are$well$resourced$and$purposeful$in$their$aims$must$become$the$template$for$the$whole$diocese.$
Ministry$Areas$live$more$closely$in$relation$to$one$another$than$single$parishes$and$to$ecumenical$friends$who$
inhabit$the$same$space$so$that$pooling$of$talent$and$ministry$allows$a$broad$area$to$be$encompassed$within$
our$mission$horizon.$
The$ identity$ of$ a$ Diocese$ and$ a$ more$ creative$ mission$ within$ it$ is$ enhanced$ if$ portfolio$ work$ is$ more$
prominently$ active$ in$ our$ life.$ Clearer$ mission$ imperatives$ and$ actions$ which$ transform$ individuals$ and$
communities$are$required.$
Achieving$our$aims$for$the$Learning$Church$will$not$happen$without$clear$strategy$and$appropriate$resourcing.$
This$requires$a$coYordinated$response$across$the$whole$diocese.$
I$am$therefore$delighted$to$coYoperate$with$the$churches$in$this$Ministry$Area$to$secure$a$priest$who$will$share$
this$common$vision$and$work$to$establish$communities$where$the$marks$of$Christ$are$seen$in$all$we$do.$

$
The$Isle$of$Anglesey$is$a$stunning$place$with$a$fascinating$history.$The$74$parish$churches$(most$of$which$have$
medieval$foundations)$tell$the$story$of$the$hugely$important$place$that$Christianity$has$played$in$the$life$of$its$
people$for$the$last$1500$years.$Its$Christian$heritage$Y$which$stretches$back$to$the$6th$century$and$is$marked$by$
saints$such$as$Cybi,$Seiriol,$Cwyfan,$Cyngar,$Tysilio,$Eleth$and$Padrig$who$founded$sacred$places$of$prayer$and$
learning$ Y$ remains$ an$ inspiration$ to$ the$ Church$ communities$ on$ the$ Island$ today.$ It$ is$ also$ very$ much$
celebrated$by$the$wider$island$as$part$of$its$cultural,$historical$and$social$tapestry.$
$
Over$the$last$few$years,$the$Church$in$Wales$on$Anglesey$has$sought$to$engage$with$the$vision$of$the$Diocese$
whilst$at$the$same$time$reconnect$with$its$ancient$heritage.$This$has$entailed$asking$two$questions.$Firstly,$how$
can$we$best$resource$people$to$grow$as$disciples$and$ministers$on$the$Island?$And,$secondly,$how$might$our$
church$become$more$dynamic,$missional,$pilgrim$focused,$rooted,$serving,$inclusive$and$professional?$Focus$on$
both$these$questions$has$led$to$a$new$energy$being$released$and$a$discipleship$and$ministry$which$is$growing$
in$collaboration$and$currently$being$expressed$through$two$major$structural$changes$on$the$Island.$
$
The$ first$ is$ the$ reYorganisation$ of$ the$ Island$ into$ eight$ Ministry$ Areas.$ This$ followed$ a$ recognition$ that$ the$
medieval$parish$system$was$breaking$down$and$did$not$allow$for$the$sort$of$collaboration$that$we$recognized$
should$be$at$the$heart$of$ministry.$Bro$Padrig$is$the$seventh$of$the$eight$areas$to$be$created.$Ministry$in$each$
area$is$led$by$a$team$made$up$of$clergy,$readers$and$licensed$lay$ministers.$Together$they$share$the$privilege$of$
public$ministry$under$the$leadership$of$the$Vicar$and$Team$Leader.$Churches$are$encouraged$to$be$a$witness$
within$their$own$local$community$but$also$to$work$together$in$mission$across$the$whole$Ministry$Area.$$
$
The$second$change$has$been$the$establishment$of$the$Anglesey$Synod.$This$is$a$completely$new$venture$which$
replaces$the$Area$Deaneries.$It$enables$us$to$collaborate$across$the$whole$Island$and$to$unite$as$the$voice$of$the$
church$ in$ Wales$ on$ Anglesey.$ It$ meets$ eight$ times$ a$ year$ (once$ in$ each$ Ministry$ Area)$ and$ its$ agenda$ is$
completely$ mission$ shaped.$ This$ year$ it$ has$ considered$ issues$ such$ as$ making$ a$ formal$ response$ to$ the$
proposed$Anglesey$County$Council$budget;$Christian$education$and$nurture$across$the$island;$the$ecumenical$
scene$and$collaborating$with$the$local$authority$and$the$Assembly$Member$for$Ynys$Mon.$$
$
A$ third$ exciting$ development$ has$ been$ the$ appointment$ of$ a$ CYFME$ (Children,$ Young$ People$ and$ Families$
Ministry$Enabler).$The$licensing$of$Kirsty$Williams$in$September$2013$to$this$full$time$post$on$the$Island$has$
provided$ us$ with$ a$ fantastic$ resource$ to$ increase$ our$ ministry$ with$ children,$ young$ people$ and$ families.$
Kirsty’s$ work$ across$ the$ whole$ island$ has$ been$ extremely$ effective$ in$ helping$ us$ to$ connect$ with$ ‘a$ lost$
generation’$ and$ the$ Ministry$ Area$ Leaders$ in$ post$ have$ all$ been$ enabled$ by$ Kirsty’s$ expertise$ and$ energy$ to$
kickYstart$work$with$this$generation$in$their$Areas.$
$
All$ these$ exciting$ developments$ take$ place$ in$ the$ context$ of$ one$ of$ the$ most$ beautiful$ places$ in$ Wales.$ Bro$
Padrig,$forming$the$North$West$corner$of$the$Island,$is$a$rural$part$of$Anglesey$where$a$considerable$amount$of$
Welsh$ is$ spoken.$The$ability$to$speak$Welsh$is$essential$for$this$post.$We$are,$however,$also$seeking$a$priest$
who$has$a$heart$for$building$community.$The$planned$new$Nuclear$Power$Plant$(Wilma$B)$at$Cemaes$Bay$is$
anticipated$will$create$6,000$jobs$during$construction$and$1,000$new$jobs$when$operational.$It$is$expected$to$
bring$a$significant$increase$in$population$to$this$part$of$the$Island.$$

The$Diocese$of$Bangor$covers$the$whole$of$the$northYwestern$quarter$of$Wales,$taking$in$the$old$counties$of$
Anglesey,$ Caernarfon,$ Meirionnydd$ and$ the$ northern$ portion$ of$ Montgomeryshire,$ and$ is$ roughly$ coY
terminous$with$the$ancient$kingdom$of$Gwynedd.$It$extends$from$the$port$of$Holyhead$in$the$north$to$the$rural$
market$town$of$Llanidloes$in$the$south;$from$the$holy$island$of$Bardsey$in$the$west$to$Llandudno$in$the$east,$
along$the$North$Wales$coastal$strip;$behind$which$lies$Snowdonia$and$the$most$mountainous$areas$of$Wales.$
Distances$ travelled$ by$ diocesan$ staff$ are$ considerable;$ one$ can$ travel$ for$ three$ hours$ without$ leaving$ the$
diocese$ to$ minister$ to$ small$ rural$ communities,$ across$ mountainous$ terrain$ and$ through$ some$ of$ the$ most$
spectacular$ landscape$ in$ Britain.$ Around$ its$ coasts,$ the$ diocese$ has$ numerous$ small$ communities,$ seaside$
resorts$ and$ ports.$ Inland,$ there$ are$ a$ large$ number$ of$ small$ postYindustrial$ communities$ (following$ the$
collapse$ of$ slate$ mining),$ and$ a$ variety$ of$ rural$ and$ agricultural$ communities,$ where$ unemployment$ is$ high,$
much$of$the$$agriculture$is$on$marginal$land$(except$for$a$small$area$in$Powys)$and$populations$are$small$and$
scattered.$ Culturally,$ there$ are$ huge$ differences$ between$ seaside$ towns,$ mountain$ village$ communities$ and$
those$in$the$fertile$valleys$of$midYWales.$
$
Gifted$young$people$often$leave$for$higher$education$and$to$find$careers.$Although$light$industry$projects$have$
been$established,$problems$of$employment$continue$the$drift$away.$There$is$very$little$industry.$Tourism,$the$
local$ authorities,$ government$ departments,$ public$ services$ and$ agriculture$ provide$ most$ employment.$ Large$
numbers$of$people$continue$to$come$from$other$parts$of$the$country$to$retire$here,$with$consequent$demands$
on$ services$ and$ local$ community$ changes.$ A$ major$ role$ for$ the$ Church$ is$ to$ affirm$ and$ build$ confidence$ and$
selfYbelief$ in$ such$ communities$ so$ that$ their$ voices$ are$ heard$ and$ their$ needs$ met.$ More$ recent$ social$ and$
economic$change$has$contributed$to$problems$and$tensions$within$the$communities:$the$decline$of$traditional$
industries,$unemployment,$rural$deYpopulation,$the$drift$of$local$WelshYspeaking$people$away,$the$continuing$
influx$of$retired$people$from$the$Midlands$and$the$North,$the$weakening$of$village$and$community$life$by$the$
growth$ of$ second$ homes,$ the$ North$ Wales$ Expressway$ now$ facilitating$ commuter$ homes$ for$ Chester,$
Manchester$and$Liverpool;$the$closure$of$local$hospitals,$the$shortage$of$industry,$geographical$isolation,$poor$
communication,$ lack$ of$ adequate$ public$ transport$ and$ other$ amenities,$ are$ problems$ which$ affect$ all$ people$
and$impinge$heavily$on$the$life$and$witness$of$the$Church.$For$all$the$difficulties,$the$general$mood$is$upYbeat$
and$optimistic$among$the$local$authorities$as$the$area$seeks$to$evolve$into$a$new$diversified$economy.$

Welsh$ is$ the$ first$ language$ and$ natural$ means$ of$ communication$ for$ three$ quarters$ of$ the$ population$ of$ the$
diocese$ as$ a$ whole,$ rising$ in$ some$ areas$ to$ in$ excess$ of$ 90%,$ with$ proportionally$ larger$ EnglishYspeaking$
communities$ in$ the$ seaside$ resorts,$ the$ historic$ towns,$ and$ the$ Deanery$ of$ Arwystli$ in$ the$ south.$ With$ the$
exception$ of$ Arwystli,$ almost$ all$ parishes$ need$ to$ provide$ for$ both$ languages.$The$ diocese$ has$ adopted$ a$
Language$ Policy,$ approved$ by$ the$ Welsh$ Language$ Board.$ The$ Diocese$ of$ Bangor$ has$ established$ a$ Diocesan$
Link$ with$ the$ Diocese$ of$ Lango,$ Northern$ Uganda,$ in$ 2003$ and$ was$ the$ culmination$ of$ reciprocal$ visits$ by$
people$from$Bangor$and$Lango$since$1994.$

Currently,$ the$ Diocese$ is$ divided$ into$ two$ archdeaconries;$ Bangor$ (and$ Anglesey)$ which$ contains$ seven$
Deaneries$and$Meirionndd,$which$contains$five.$

In$ October$ 2012,$ the$ Diocese$ of$ Bangor$ launched$ its$ Vision$ Document$ at$ the$ Diocesan$ Conference$ called$ A"
Vision"for"the"Learning"Church.$This$document$outlines$the$goals$we$share$as$a$diocese$and$is$included$with$this$
Job$Description.$As$a$consequence$of$consultations$at$parish$and$deanery$levels$with$clergy$and$lay$people$it$
was$ agreed$ that$ we$ needed$ to$ address$ a$ serious$ situation$ in$ which$ numbers$ of$ Sunday$ worshippers$ were$
declining,$ those$ once$ associated$ with$ the$ church$ in$ their$ teenage$ years$ had$ almost$ completely$ vanished$ and$
that$was$little$capacity$and$energy$to$break$new$ground.$$
$
This$document$outlines$hopes$and$aspirations.$It$is$set$within$the$context$of$the$parish$system$being$replaced$
by$ Ministry$ Areas$ in$ which$ clergy$ and$ laity$ share$ responsibility$ for$ the$ life$ of$ their$ communities.$ We$ are$
currently$in$the$process$of$developing$Leadership$Teams$across$these$Ministry$Areas$and$establishing$a$new$
forum$ for$ wider$ diocesan$ coYoperation$ through$ Archidiaconal$ Synods.$ The$ work$ of$ Ministry$ Areas$ are$
supported$by:$

Archdeacons$ –$ whose$ roles$ have$ been$ developed$ as$ Missional$ Accompanists$ in$ the$ Diocese.$ Visitations$ now$
take$place$in$the$context$of$a$Parish$Review$as$Archdeacons$come$alongside$a$parish$by$spending$a$few$days$in$
each$Ministry$Area$every$year$to$help$parish$development$and$mission$action$planning.$$
$
St"Seiriol"Centre$–$This$is$our$College$of$Discipleship$which$trains$people$for$discipleship$and$ministry.$Whilst$it$
has$ been$ established$ for$ ten$ years,$ it$ has$ recently$ moved$ up$ a$ gear$ with$ the$ appointment$ of$ Professor$ Mike$
West$as$a$full$time$Director.$

CYFME’s$–$In$addition,$the$Diocese$has$invested$in$the$appointment$of$four$‘Children,$Young$People$and$Family$
Ministry$Enablers’$in$the$Diocese$to$help$Ministry$Areas$to$connect$with$a$‘lost$generation’.$Currently,$we$have$
two$working$in$the$Archdeaconry$of$Meirionnydd$and$one$on$the$Isle$of$Anglesey.$We$are$currently$advertising$
for$the$fourth$person$who$will$cover$the$Bangor$and$Caernarfon$area..$

$
In$population$and$number$of$churches,$Anglesey$(or$Ynys$Môn)$accounts$for$a$third$of$the$Diocese$of$Bangor.$
Historically,$ it$ was$ one$ of$ three$ Archdeaconries$ (along$ with$ Bangor$ and$ Meirionnydd)$ until$ 1844$ when$ the$
Archdeaconry$ of$ Anglesey$ became$ part$ of$ the$ Archdeaconry$ of$ Bangor$ (now$ formally$ known$ as$ the$
Archdeaconry$ of$ Bangor$ and$ Anglesey).$ No$ doubt$ this$ development$ followed$ the$ construction$ of$ the$ Menai$
Suspension$ Bridge$ designed$ by$ Thomas$ Telford$ in$ 1826$ –$ the$ first$ bridge$ from$ the$ mainland$ to$ the$ Island.$$$$
This$was$followed$by$the$construction$of$the$Britannia$Bridge,$designed$by$Robert$Stephenson$in$1846,$which$
now$ carries$ the$ main$ A55$ from$ Chester$ to$ Holyhead.$ Formerly$ part$ of$ Gwynedd,$ Anglesey,$ Holy$ Island$ and$
other$smaller$islands$now$make$up$the$County$of$the$Isle$of$Anglesey.$Ynys$Môn,$the$Welsh$name$for$the$island,$
is$ used$ for$ the$ UK$ Parliament$ and$ National$ Assembly$ constituencies.$ With$ an$ area$ of$ 714$ square$ kilometres$
(276$sq$miles)$ Anglesey$ is$ the$ largest$ Welsh$ island,$ the$ fifth$ largest$ surrounding$ Great$ Britain.$ The$ 2011$
Census$recorded$a$population$of$69,700.$Almost$three$quarters$of$the$inhabitants$are$Welsh$speakers.$
$
Numerous$megalithic$monuments$and$menhirs$are$present$on$Anglesey,$testifying$to$the$presence$of$humans$
in$ prehistory.$ British$ Iron$ Age$ and$ Roman$ sites$ have$ been$ excavated,$ and$ coins$ and$ ornaments$ discovered,$
especially$ by$ the$ 19th$ century$ antiquarian,$ William$ Owen$ Stanley.$ Following$ the$ Roman$ departure$ from$
Britain$ in$ the$ early$ 5th$ century,$ pirates$ from$ Ireland$ colonised$ Anglesey$ and$ the$ nearby$ Llŷn$ Peninsula.$ In$
response$ to$ this,$ Cunedda$ ap$ Edern,$ a$ Gododdin$ warlord$ from$ Scotland,$ came$ to$ the$ area$ and$ began$ the$
process$of$driving$the$Irish$out.$This$process$was$continued$by$his$son$Einion$Yrth$ap$Cunedda$and$grandson$
Cadwallon$ Lawhir$ ap$ Einion,$ the$ last$ Irish$ invaders$ finally$ being$ defeated$ in$ battle$ in$ 470.$ As$ an$ island,$
Anglesey$was$in$a$good$defensive$position$and,$because$of$this,$Aberffraw$became$the$site$of$the$court,$or$Llys,$
of$the$Kingdom$of$Gwynedd.$Apart$from$a$devastating$Danish$raid$in$853$it$was$to$remain$the$capital$until$the$
13th$ century,$ when$ improvements$ to$ the$ English$ navy$ made$ the$ location$ indefensible.$ After$ the$ Irish,$ the$
island$was$invaded$by$Vikings,$some$of$these$raids$being$noted$in$famous$sagas$(see$Menai$Strait$History),$as$
well$as$Saxons,$and$Normans,$before$falling$to$Edward$I$of$England$in$the$13th$century.$$

Anglesey$ is$ a$ relatively$ lowYlying$ island$ with$ seven$ small$ and$ scattered$ towns,$ making$ it$ quite$ evenly$
populated.$ Holyhead$ (on$ Holy$ Island$ –$ west$ of$ Anglesey)$ is$ the$ largest$ town,$ forming$ an$ important$ port$ for$
Ireland$(pop.$11,431).$This$is$followed$by$Llangefni$(pop.$5,116)$which$is$the$County$Town$and$administrative$
and$geographical$centre$of$the$island.$The$town$of$Menai$Bridge,$southeast$(pop.$3,850),$expanded$when$the$
first$bridge$to$the$mainland$was$being$built$in$order$to$accommodate$workers$and$construction.$Up$until$that$
time$Porthaethwy$had$been$one$of$the$principal$ferry$crossing$points$from$the$mainland.$The$town$of$Amlwch$
(pop.$3,789)$is$situated$in$the$northeast$of$the$island$and$was$once$largely$industrialised,$having$grown$during$
the$ 18th$ century$ supporting$ the$ copper$ mining$ industry$ at$ Parys$ Mountain.$ Benllech$ (pop.$ 3,408)$ is$ the$
newest$town$on$the$north$coast$having$grown$rapidly$during$the$1950s$by$an$influx$of$people$retiring$to$the$
region.$ Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch$ (pop.$ 3,107$ and$ the$ gateway$ to$ the$
island$via$the$Britannia$Bridge)$is$famous$for$its$Victorian$name.$Nearby$is$Plas$Newydd,$the$ancestral$home$of$
the$ Marquess$ of$ Anglesey.$ Finally,$ Beaumaris$ (pop.2,040)$ on$ the$ east$ coast$ is$ an$ extremely$ popular$ holiday$
destination$with$its$Castle$built$by$Edward$I$as$part$of$his$Bastide$Town$campaign$in$North$Wales.$$
$
The$ island's$ entire$ rural$ coastline$ has$ been$ designated$ an$ Area$ of$ Outstanding$ Natural$ Beauty$ and$ features$
many$sandy$beaches,$especially$along$its$eastern$coast$between$the$towns$of$Beaumaris$and$Amlwch$and$along$
the$ western$ coast$ from$ Ynys$ Llanddwyn$ through$ Rhosneigr$ to$ the$ little$ bays$ around$ Carmel$ Head.$ The$
northern$coastline$is$characterised$by$dramatic$cliffs$interspersed$with$small$bays.$The$Anglesey$Coastal$Path$
is$ a$ 200Ykilometre$ path$ which$ follows$ the$ entire$ coastline.$ Tourism$ is$ now$ the$ most$ significant$ economic$
activity$on$the$island$with$over$2$million$people$visiting$the$Island$each$year$(this$saw$a$significant$increase$
following$the$Duke$and$Duchess$of$Cambridge’s$move$to$the$Island)$Agriculture$provides$the$secondary$source$
of$income$for$the$island's$economy,$with$the$local$dairies$being$amongst$the$most$productive$in$the$region.$
$
Major$ industries$ are$ restricted$ to$ Holyhead$ (Caergybi)$ which,$ until$ 30$ September$ 2009,$ supported$ an$
aluminium$smelter,$and$the$Amlwch$area,$once$a$major$copper$mining$town.$Near$Amlwch$(Cemais$Bay)$is$the$
Wylfa$ nuclear$ power$ station$ and$ a$ former$ bromine$ extraction$ plant.$ In$ 1971$ the$ Wylfa$ reactors$ began$
producing$electricity.$With$one$reactor$decommissioned$in$2012$and$the$other$expected$to$end$production$in$
2015,$the$site$is$a$strong$possibility$for$a$replacement$reactor,$planned$by$Horizon,$a$subsidiary$of$Hitachi,$to$
start$ production$ in$ the$ 2020s.$ The$ replacement$ has$ been$ enthusiastically$ endorsed$ by$ Anglesey$ Council$ and$
Welsh$Assembly$members.$
$
The$ Royal$ Air$ Force$ station$ RAF$ Valley$ (Y$ Fali)$ is$ home$ to$ the$ RAF$ Fast$ Jet$ Training$ School$ and$ also$ 22$ Sqn$
Search$and$Rescue$Helicopters,$both$units$providing$employment$for$approximately$500$civilians.$RAF$Valley$
is$ now$ home$ to$ the$ Headquarters$ of$ 22$ Sqn$ Search$ and$ Rescue.$ The$ Diocese$ has$ a$ strong$ link$ with$ the$ RAF$
station$where$there$is$a$full$time$chaplain$who$has$‘Permission$to$Officiate’$in$the$Diocese.$
$
There$ is$ a$ wide$ range$ of$ smaller$ industries,$ mostly$ located$ in$ industrial$ and$ business$ parks$ especially$ at$
Llangefni$ and$ Gaerwen.$ These$ industries$ include$ an$ abattoir$ and$ fine$ chemicals$ manufacture$ as$ well$ as$
factories$ for$ timber$ production,$ aluminium$ smelting,$ fish$ farming$ and$ food$ processing.$ The$ island$ is$ also$ on$
one$ of$ the$ major$ routes$ from$ Britain$ to$ Ireland,$ via$ ferries$ from$ Holyhead,$ off$ the$ west$ of$ Anglesey$ on$ Holy$
Island,$to$Dún$Laoghaire$and$Dublin$Port.$
$
Anglesey$also$has$three$windfarms$and$more$than$20$offshore$wind$turbines$established$near$the$north$coast.$
There$are$plans$for$the$world's$first$tidal$flow$turbines,$near$the$Skerries$off$the$north$coast,$and$for$a$major$
biomass$plant$on$Holy$Island.$Developing$such$low$carbon$energy$assets$to$their$full$potential$forms$part$of$the$
Anglesey$Energy$Island$project.$
$
Much$ of$ Anglesey$ is$ covered$ with$ relatively$ intensive$ cattle$ and$ sheep$ farming$ aided$ by$ modern$ agroY
chemicals.$In$these$areas$the$native$vegetation$and$wildlife$have$essentially$been$destroyed.$However$there$are$
a$ number$ of$ important$ wetland$ sites$ which$ have$ protected$ status.$ In$ addition$ the$ several$ lakes$ all$ have$
significant$ecological$interest$including$their$support$for$a$wide$range$of$aquatic$and$semiYaquatic$bird$species.$
In$the$west,$the$Malltraeth$Marshes$are$believed$to$be$supporting$an$occasional$visiting$bittern$and$the$nearby$
estuary$of$the$Afon$Cefni$supports$a$bird$population$made$internationally$famous$by$the$paintings$of$Charles$
Tunnicliffe,$who$lived$for$many$years$–$and$died$at$Y$Malltraeth$on$the$Cefni$estuary.$The$RAF$airstrip$at$Mona$
is$a$nesting$site$for$skylarks.$The$sheer$cliff$faces$at$South$Stack$near$Holyhead$provide$nesting$sites$for$huge$
numbers$ of$ auks$ including$ puffins,$ razorbills$ and$ guillemots$ together$ with$ choughs$ and$ peregrine$ falcons.$
Three$ sites$ on$ Anglesey$ are$ important$ for$ breeding$ terns$–$ see$ Anglesey$ tern$ colonies.$ There$ are$ significant$
occurrences$ of$ the$ Juncus$ subnodulosusYCirsium$ palustre$ fenYmeadow$ plant$ association,$ a$ habitat$
characterised$ by$ certain$ hydrophilic$ grasses,$ sedges$ and$ forbs.$ Anglesey$ is$ home$ to$ several$ species$ of$ tern,$
including$the$Roseate$Tern.$

Each$ Ministry$ Area$ has$ adopted$ a$ Governance$ Document$ (consistent$ with$ the$ Constitution" of" the" Church" in"
Wales)$ which$ broadly$ divides$ the$ responsibility$ for$ the$ work$ of$ the$ Church$ in$ that$ Area$ to$ three$ corporate$
bodies:$

Ministry$is$facilitated$by$a$team,$known$as$the$Ministry!Team,$facilitated$by$a$Vicar$$and$Ministry$Team$Leader.$
Teams$ comprise$ of$ a$ mixture$ of$ people:$ clergy$ (stipendiary$ and$ non$ stipendiary),$ lay$ readers,$ pastoral$
eucharistic$ assistants$ and$ others$ licensed$ for$ public$ ministry$ by$ the$ Bishop$ and$ served$ by$ an$ administrator.$
They$ meet$ together$ to$ pray$ and$ orchestrate$ ministry$ across$ the$ area.$ Most$ teams$ operate$ a$ system$ of$ ‘focal$
ministers’,$where$team$members$have$specific$responsibility$for$a$particular$church$community.$$Praying$and$
working$ together$ and$ sharing$ gifts$ is,$ however,$ crucial$ to$ the$ effectiveness$ of$ each$ area.$ The$ Diocese$ is$
investing$heavily$in$the$development$of$teams.$
"
Mission$is$the$responsibility$of$the$Parochial!Church!Council$(as$it$is$now$according$to$the$Constitution"of"the"
Church"in"Wales$Chapter$IV$C$III(3))$in$collaboration$with$the$Team.$$They$are,$however,$encouraged$to$be$far$
more$proactive$in$mission.$It$is$hoped$that$larger$areas$will$enable$them$to$be$more$innovative$through$pooling$
resources$for$particular$areas.$For$example,$in$a$Ministry$Area$consisting$of$seven$churches,$there$might$be$one$
Sunday$School;$one$youth$group;$one$Exploring$Faith$group;$one$Foodbank;$one$Messy$Church;$one$Mothers’$
Union$etc.$Each$Ministry$Area$on$the$Island$testifies$to$the$way$in$which$the$new$‘United$PCC’$has$released$the$
church$in$that$place$to$be$more$proactive$in$its$mission.$
$
Maintenance$in$the$Ministry$Area$is$largely$be$the$responsibility$of$the$Local!Church.$They$continue$to$provide$
for$ worship$ to$ their$ local$ community$ as$ well$ as$ looking$ after$ their$ local$ church$ and$ churchyard.$ Finance$
operates$ mainly$ on$ this$ level.$ Each$ church$ retains$ a$ financial$ independence,$ although$ there$ may$ be$ a$ small$
payment$into$a$central$account$for$the$purposes$of$parochial$administration$and$mission$activity$as$agreed$by$
the$respective$PCCs.$This$is$most$sensibly$organized$on$a$proportional$basis,$which$is$parallel$to$the$proportion$
of$Ministry$Share$paid.$

Each$ of$ the$ Ministry$ Areas$ on$ Anglesey$ is$ different$ and$ distinctive.$ Bro$ Padrig$ is$ one$ of$ the$ most$
spectacular$ parts$ of$ Anglesey.$ The$ view$ from$ the$ new$ Vicarage$ is$ one$ of$ the$ finest$ in$ the$ Diocese.$ The$
particular$characteristics$of$Bro$Padrig$are:$

2. It$has$the$most$sparse$population$–$a$total$population$of$under$5,000$people$
3. It$has$the$most$number$of$church$buildings$(10$–$although$5$are$only$used$occasionally)$

5. It$is$one$of$the$biggest$geographical$Ministry$Areas$(eight$miles$from$the$north$east$to$south$west)$
6. It$has$one$main$centre$of$population$in$Cemais$Bay$
7. It$contains$the$largest$single$employer$on$the$Island$–$Wylfa$Power$Station$
8. It$contains$the$largest$lake$on$the$Island$(Llyn$Alaw)$
9. It$is$one$of$areas$where$the$Welsh$language$is$spoken$most$frequently$

The$Ministry$Area$has,$in$essence,$been$created$from$two$former$parishes.$The$former$parish$of$Llanbadrig$
with$Llanfechell$and$Bodewryd$with$Llanfflewin$existed$as$a$unit$for$many$years.$Its$last$incumbent,$Canon$
Geraint$Edwards,$retired$in$2013$after$over$30$years$in$the$parish.$The$former$parishes$of$the$Llanfaethlu$
Group$(Llanfaethlu,$Llanrhuddlad,$Llanfairynghornwy,$Llanrhwydrus)$were$linked$with$the$Bodedern$but$
this$is$now$part$of$the$Bro$Cwyfan$Ministry$Area.$The$people$of$all$these$churches$are$looking$forward$to$
being$part$of$this$new$area$and$have$shown$coYoperation$and$enthusiasm$for$this$new$chapter.$

Llanbadrig$is$the$northernmost$parish$in$Wales.$It$takes$its$name$from$the$ancient$church,$said$to$have$been$
founded$c440AD$by$St$Patrick$himself,$and$standing$on$the$clifftop$some$mile$and$a$half$from$the$main$centre$
of$ population.$ Local$ legend$ states$ that$ Patrick$ was$ shipwrecked$ on$ the$ small$ nearby$ island$ of$ Ynys$ Badrig$
(Patrick’s$Isle,$also$known$as$Middle$Mouse)$which$can$be$seen$from$the$churchyard.$
$
The$ main$ centre$ of$ population$ in$ the$ ancient$ parish$ of$ Llanbadrig$ (and$ in$ the$ Bro$ Padrig$ Ministry$ Area)$ is$
Cemais$ Bay$ (formally$ known$ as$ Cemais$ meaning$ $‘bend’$ which$ presumably$ refers$ to$ the$ shape$ of$ the$ bay)$
which$in$2011$had$a$population$of$1,397.$This$community$is$built$around$the$natural$harbour$where$the$River$
Wygyr$enters$the$sea.$$
$
Cemaes$Bay$was$originally$an$ancient$fishing$village.$Later,$during$the$18th$and$19th$Centuries,$it$developed$
into$a$thriving$port$where$limestone$and$marble$quarried$from$White$Lady$Bay,$were$exported$in$ships$from$
here.$In$the$1830’s$shipbuilding$employed$many$local$people$who$built$100$to$400$ton$vessels$in$the$shelter$of$
the$harbour.$In$1907,$the$Klondyke$Brickworks,$near$to$the$bypass$on$the$outskirts$of$the$village,$was$founded.$
The$bricks$were$transported$by$horse$drawn$truck$on$the$rail$track$down$to$the$harbour$and$returned$full$of$
coal$to$fire$the$kiln.$Until$1914,$clay$and$quartzite$was$quarried$at$Porth$Wen$brickworks$from$the$nearby$cliffs$
and$used$to$make$silica$bricks$for$the$steel$industry$and$glazed$bricks$for$domestic$use.$
$
In$ the$ early$ 21st$ century,$ whilst$ there$ is$ still$ some$ fishing$ and$ agriculture$ in$ the$ community,$ most$ of$ the$
economy$is$rooted$in$tourism$and$the$Nuclear$Power$Station$at$nearby$Wylfa.$
$
The$village$has$a$significant$number$of$holiday$and$second$homes$from$which$tourists$enjoy$access$to$the$good$
quality$shops$in$the$main$street$(including$a$village$store,$grocer,$butcher,$chemist,$hairdresser,$craft$shop$and$
art$ gallery).$ Cemais$ is$ a$ particularly$ popular$ destination$ for$ tourists$ who$ enjoy$ fishing$ (either$ boat$ or$ shore$
fishing),$walking$(being$on$the$Anglesey$Coast$Path)$or$cycling.$There$is$a$good$library$and$doctor’s$surgery$in$
the$village.$

Wylfa$Power$Station,$owned$by$the$Nuclear$Decommissioning$Authority,$has$been$generating$electricity$since$
1971.$ $Magnox$ Ltd,$ owned$ by$ Energy$ Solutions,$ $manage$ and$ operate$ Wylfa$ Power$ Station$ under$ contract$ to$
the$ Nuclear$ Decommissioning$ Authority.$ $The$ power$ station$ provides$ well$ paid$ jobs$ for$ local$ people$ and$
contractors$ and$ has$ been$ a$ good$ neighbour$ to$ Cemaes$ Bay$ supporting$ many$ community$ groups$ with$ socioY
economic$funding$and$donations$for$many$years.$On$20$July$2006$the$NDA$announced$that$the$station$would$
be$ shut$ down$ in$ 2010$ because$ operation$ beyond$ then$ would$ be$ uneconomic$ given$ plans$ to$ shut$ down$ the$
Magnox$ spent$ fuel$ reprocessing$ plant$ at$ Sellafield.$ Whilst$ Reactor$ 2$ ceased$ generating$ on$ 25$ April$ 2012,$
Reactor$1’s$lifetime$has$been$$extended$to$September$2014.$$
$
A$ second$ plant$ named$ Wylfa$ Newydd$
(previously$ referred$ to$ as$ Wylfa$ B)$ has$
been$proposed,$in$part$to$provide$for$the$
needs$ of$ the$ Anglesey$ Aluminium$
smelter$ located$ in$ Holyhead.$ The$
Anglesey$ Aluminium$ plant$ was$ shut$
down$ on$ 30$ Sep$ tember$ 2009.$ The$
company$subsequently$announced$plans$
for$ a$ biomass$ plant$ on$ the$ site$ by$ 2016$
for$ which$ planning$ permission$ has$ been$
approved.$ In$ 2009,$ Horizon$ Nuclear$
Power,$originally$an$E.ON$and$RWE$joint$
venture$ (bought$ by$ Hitachi$ in$ 2012)$
announced$ its$ intention$ to$ install$ about$
3,000$ MWe$ of$ new$ nuclear$ plant$ at$
Wylfa,$ planning$ to$ build$ an$ Advance$
Boiling$ Water$ Reactor$ at$ a$ site$ to$ the$
south$of$the$existing$Wylfa$station.$In$2010$the$British$government$announced$that$Wylfa$was$one$of$the$eight$
sites$ it$ considered$ suitable$ for$ future$ nuclear$ power$ stations.$ In$ March$ 2012$ E.ON$ and$ RWE$ npower$
announced$that$their$plans$to$build$the$new$power$station$had$been$shelved$but$in$October$of$the$same$year,$it$
was$announced$that$Hitachi$had$bought$the$UK$nuclear$project$from$E.On$and$RWE.$Horizon$plans$initial$site$
work$at$Wylfa$to$begin$in$2015,$with$building$work$starting$in$2018$and$generation$starting$in$the$midY2020s.$

Llanbadrig$ is$ believed$ to$ be$ one$ of$ the$ oldest$ church$ foundations$ on$ the$ Island.$ It$ is$ reputed$ that$ in$ the$ 5th$
century$AD,$St$Patrick$was$shipwrecked$on$Middle$Mouse$Y$the$small$island$just$offshore$from$the$site$of$the$
church$Y$(also$known$as$Ynys$Badrig).$On$reaching$the$mainland$Patrick$found$refuge$in$the$cave$(Ogof$Badrig)$
below$ the$ churchyard$ where$ he$ was$ refreshed$ from$ a$ fresh$ water$ well$ (Ffynnon$ Badrig)$ and$ eventually$
recovered$and$founded$the$church$as$a$thanks$offering$to$God$for$his$rescue$from$a$watery$grave.$The$present$
church$contains$fragments$of$an$earlier$building$but$dates$mainly$from$the$15th$century.$As$is$common$to$many$
Welsh$ churches,$ the$ Victorians$ undertook$ renovations$ in$ the$ mid$ 19th$ Century.$ In$ 1884,$ however,$ it$ was$
further$restored$by$Lord$Stanley$(then$patron$of$the$living).$The$Lord$Stanley$had$converted$to$Islam$through$
his$marriage$to$a$Spanish$lady,$Fabia$Santiago,$and$after$agreeing$to$finance$works$of$restoration$on$the$church$
insisted$that$the$works$should$reflect$some$elements$of$his$Muslim$faith.$Thus$St$Patrick’s$Church$boasts$arabic$
style$ tiles$ on$ the$ walls$ of$ an$ old$ Welsh$ church,$ and$ warm$ Mediterranean$ colours$ set$ in$ the$ stained$ glass$
windows$ that$ look$ out$ over$ the$ stormy$ Irish$ Sea!$ Considerable$ renovations$ took$ place$ in$ the$ 1980s$ and$ the$
building$is$in$good$order.$Services$are$held$in$this$church$at$11am$on$the$last$Sunday$of$the$month$between$
May$and$September.$It$is$also$very$popular$for$occasional$offices.$
$
The$vast$majority$of$services$and$meetings$in$the$parish$are,$however,$held$in$the$Victorian$St$Patrick’s$Church$
in$ Cemaes$ Bay$ which$ was$ built$ in$ 1865$ in$ a$ more$ convenient$ location$ for$ the$ centre$ of$ population.$ In$ the$
1980’s,$ the$ building$ was$ extended$ on$ the$ north$ side$ to$ provide$ a$ meeting$ room,$ kitchen$ and$ toilet$ facilities$
(shown$in$the$photograph$above).$The$building$is$well$looked$after$by$the$church$and$is$in$good$order.$There$is$
a$biYlingual$celebration$of$the$Holy$Eucharist$here$at$11am$every$Sunday$(except$when$it$is$held$in$Llanbadrig)$
and$on$a$Wednesday$at$11am.$The$average$Sunday$attendance$is$about$25$people.$
$
The$ Church$ has$ a$ warm,$ friendly$ proactive$ congregation$ who$ work$ well$ together$ as$ a$ team$ to$ worship$ and$
raise$funds.$It$has$long$played$its$part$in$the$ecumenical$tradition$of$the$village$joining$in$united$services$with$
the$ Roman$ Catholic$ Church$ and$ Chapels.$ $ The$ congregation$ is$ always$ open$ to$ new$ ideas$ and$ to$ examine$
different$forms$of$worship.$$$It$is$also$very$aware$of$the$necessity$to$attract$families$and$young$people$to$the$
Church$and$to$include$a$broad$spectrum$of$people$from$different$church$traditions$or$those$new$to$the$church.$$
In$ terms$ of$ attracting$ young$ people,$ the$ Church$ would$ like$ to$ see$ an$ increasing$ link$ with$ the$ local$ primary$
School.$$$

About$a$mile$south$of$Cemaes,$Llanfechell$is$the$largest$of$several$dispersed$settlements$that$make$up$Mechell$
Community$Council$area$which$had$a$population$(2011)$of$1,532.$Village$services$include$a$church,$a$primary$
school,$a$pub$and$two$chapels.$It$is$an$agricultural$area,$and$has$been$a$local$centre$for$markets,$livestock$fairs,$
and$had$both$a$watermill$and$windmill.$$

The$ many$ prehistoric$ remains$ close$ to$ the$ village$ indicate$ the$ area$ has$ been$ lived$ in$ for$ thousands$ of$ years.$
The$ name$ Llanfechell$ means$ Church" of" St" Mechell.$ Mechell$ appears$ to$ have$ been$ a$ 6thYcentury$ missionary,$
possibly$ from$ Brittany,$ who$ founded$ a$ monastery$ here.$ A$ 17thYcentury$ manuscript,$ (Llanstephan$ MS.$ 125)$
records$ a$ Welsh$ poem,$ "Cywydd$ i$ Fechell$ Sant".$ This$ describes$ how$ St$ Mechell$ was$ offered$ a$ gift$ of$ land$ in$
gratitude$ for$ a$ miraculous$ healing,$ to$ be$ demarked$ by$ the$ route$ of$ a$ released$ hare.$ The$ hare,$ under$ divine$
guidance,$marked$the$full$extent$of$what$is$now$the$parish,$on$which$he$then$founded$the$monastery.$
$
The$village$is$today$a$lively$biYlingual$community$(50:50$Welsh:English)$with$a$closeYknit$population$of$both$
WelshYspeaking$families$who$have$resided$in$the$area$for$generations,$and$relative$newcomers$of$working$and$
retirement$age.$There$is$a$pub$and$local$store,$as$well$as$a$Community$Council$and$several$active$community$
groups.$The$village$is$currently$in$the$process$of$purchasing$and$refurbishing$the$former$post$officeYshop,$to$
convert$ it$ to$ a$ communityYowned$ business$ and$ facilities.$ A$ privatelyYowned$ convenience$ store$ has$ also$ reY
opened$recently.$$Much$of$the$working$population$is$employed$elsewhere$on$the$island$or$on$the$mainland,$in$
both$public$and$private$sectors.$Wylfa$nuclear$power$station,$two$miles$away,$is$also$a$significant$employer.$$
$
There$are$two$chapels$(Methodist$and$Congregationalist),$in$addition$to$St$Mechell$Church.$$A$wellYsupported$
WelshYmedium$ primary$ school$ also$ acts$ as$ the$ village’s$ Community$ Centre.$ A$ war$ memorial$ dominates$ the$
village$square,$and$a$Remembrance$service$is$held$annually$in$memory$of$those$who$died$in$the$world$wars.$
There$are$currently$two$meeting$places,$the$Community$Centre$and$the$Chapel$hall,$accomodating$communityY
based$ clubs$ and$ activities,$ some$ recent$ and$ others$ longer$ established$ (see$ below).$ The$ community$ is$ very$
collaborative$and$busy.$Amongst$the$different$organisations$and$activities$in$the$village$are:$

attached,$meeting$most$weekday$mornings.$A$privatelyYrun$afterYschool$club$takes$place$every$school$evening.!

Canolfan" Cymdeithasol/The" Community" Centre:$ This$ consists$ of$ the$ hall$ within$ the$ school,$ as$ well$ as$ a$ small$
kitchen$and$large$community$room$used$for$meetings$and$other$activities.$
Cyngor" Cymuned" Mechell" Community" Council:$ This$ encompasses$ the$ local$ council$ boundaries$ of$ Llanfechell,$
Mynydd$Mechell$$and$Carreglefn$and$acts$as$trustee$to$the$Windmill$Community$Benefit$fund.$
Menter" Mechell:$ Llanfechell’s$ community$ partnership$ committee$ of$ local$ residents,$ created$ in$ 2007.$ It$ works$
with$ the$ Community$ Council$ and$ other$ groups$ to$ attract$ funding$ for$ initiatives$ of$ benefit$ to$ the$ village$ as$ a$
whole.$These$include:$$

attendees)$for$regular$talks$and$discussions.$The$group$recently$published$a$book$on$the$history$of$the$village$
and$took$part$in$a$local$archeological$dig.$
• The"Wygyr"and"Meddanen"Association,$a$group$for$nature$conservation$and$fishing$on$the$village’s$rivers,$
• The"Footpath"Group,$which$has$mapped$paths$around$the$village,$and$organises$community$walks,$including$
this$year’s$‘William$Bulkeley$Diaries$Walk’$in$conjunction$with$the$Anglesey$Walking$Festival.$$

Mother"and"Toddlers:$Parent$and$toddler$group$meeting$every$Monday$afternoon$at$the$Community$centre.$

Mechell" Fair:$ This$ is$ a$ major$ annual$ village$ event,$ attracting$ a$ wide$ spread$ of$ local$ residents$ and$ outside$
visitors.$Held$at$the$School$every$August,$in$conjunction$with$the$Horticultural$show.$

St$Mechell’s$Church$stands$in$the$square$to$the$east$of$the$village.$$Originally$a$medieval$‘clas’$foundation,$the$
nave$and$the$west$part$of$the$chancel$are$probably$of$the$12th$century.$The$latter$was$lengthened$in$the$13th$
century$and$the$south$transept$added$in$the$14th$century.$The$north$transept$is$modernized$and$of$uncertain$
date.$The$west$tower,$with$unusual$cupola,$was$built$in$the$16th$century.$The$south$transept$is$modernized$but$
probably$originally$medieval.$It$is$possible$that$the$12th$century$church$had$a$central$tower,$as$suggested$by$
irregularities$and$straight$joints$in$the$walls$near$the$crossing.$It$has$a$number$of$distinctive$features,$including$
a$12th$century$font$and$a$single$medieval$stained$glass$window.$William$Bulkeley$the$diarist$is$buried$within$
the$church,$as$are$a$variety$of$his$Brynddu$forbears$and$successors.

Services$are$held$biYlingually$at$9.30am$every$Sunday,$with$the$Welsh$language$predominating.$The$church$has$
a$ core$ congregation$ of$ 18,$ but$ at$ Easter,$ Christmas$ and$ other$ special$ occasions$ there$ can$ be$ up$ to$ a$ fifty$
attendees.$ About$ 20$ years$ ago,$ it$ was$ decided$ to$ dedicate$ the$ fourth$ Sunday$ of$ the$ month$ to$ hold$ united$
services$ in$ the$ village.$ The$ Presbyterians,$ the$ Baptists,$ the$ Congregational$ and$ the$ Church$ in$ Wales$ joined$
together$ in$ this$ confident$ venture.$ Ever$ since$ a$ delightful$ relationship$ has$ developed$ between$ the$ churches.$
The$considerable$number$of$social$and$fundYraising$events$organized$by$the$congregation$are$generally$wellY
supported$ by$ the$ rest$ of$ the$ village,$ a$ reflection$ of$ its$ continuing$ significance$ for$ the$ population$ as$ a$ whole.$
Annual$church$events$include:$the$Snowdrop$or$Bluebell$walk$at$Brynddu$(March,$May);$Cream$tea$at$Fynwent$
(May);$Summer$evening$fair$at$Brynddu$(June);$Flower$festival$in$St$Mechell$(July);$Soup$&$roll$event$with$light$
entertainment$(Autumn);$Christmas$Fair$(November);$CarolYsinging$&$mince$pies$with$Llanflewin$church$and$
parish$(December).
The$congregation$feel$they$urgently$need$to$build$for$the$future.$This$means$building$up$spiritual$and$practical$
presence$in$the$village,$in$order$to$draw$in$a$wider$range$of$younger$individuals$and$families$as$members$of$
the$congregation.$They$feel$that$this$requires$then$to$explore$and$develop$new$initiatives.
For$example
• A$wider$range$of$activities$within$and$outside$the$church$building,$
• More$familyYfriendly$services$for$younger$families$and$upYdated$Sunday$school$activities$for$children.
• Discussion$groups$including$outside$speakers,$and$musical$events,$to$attract$the$interest$of$potentially$
interested$adults.
• $Collaborative$initiatives$with$the$new$Community$Shop$and$Centre,$aimed$at$spreading$the$word$more$
widely.
• More$DIY$services,$sermons$and$cultural$activities$within$the$church$itself.
• More$active$practical$help$and$care$towards$our$neighbours$in$the$immediate$community.

Llanfflewin,$on$Mynydd$Mechell$(Mechell$Mountain),$is$a$very$sparse$rural$community$about$two$miles$from$
Llanfechell.$It$is$a$heavily$agricultural$area$with$sporadic$dwellings.$A$small$new$housing$estate$has$increased$
the$population$quite$significantly$in$the$last$few$years.$Distinctive$features$within$the$community$include$two$
lakes$ (Llyn$ Bwlch$ and$ Llyn$ Llygeirian);$ Mechell$ Windmill$ and$ the$ old$ quarry.$ The$ community$ looks$ to$
Llanfechell$for$most$of$its$activities$and$amenities.$
$
The$ church$ stands$ near$ a$ farm$ in$ a$ very$ remote$ area$ about$ 2$ miles$ from$ Llanfechell.$ It$ can$ be$ located$ by$
following$a$small$track$about$¼$mile$from$the$main$road$towards$Fferam$y$Llan$(Llanfflewin).$The$first$church$
on$the$site$is$said$to$have$been$built$by$St$Fflewin$in$630,$but$the$present$building$has$no$structural$features$
dating$ from$ before$ the$ 18th$ century,$ apart$ from$ a$ 14th$ or$ 15th$ century$ font$ and$ an$ inscribed$ medieval$
gravestone$ which$ has$ been$ reused$ in$ a$ window$ sill.$ St$ Fflewin$ was$ a$ Christian$ who$ was$ active$ in$ the$ 6th$
century.$ He$ is$ described$ as$ the$ son$ of$ Ithel$ Hael,$ who$ came$ to$ Britain$ from$ Armorica$ (presentYday$ northern$
France)$towards$the$end$of$the$5th$century.$He$established$a$Christian$site$at$the$location$of$the$present$church$
in$630.$There$was$certainly$a$church$here$by$1254,$since$it$is$recorded$in$the$Norwich$Taxation$of$that$year.$
After$some$repairs$in$the$early$part$of$the$19th$century,$the$present$structure$was$partially$rebuilt$$in$1864$and$
further$restored$during$the$1930s.$During$this$time,$it$was$a$chapel$of$ease$to$the$parish$of$Llanrhuddlad.$
$
The$ worshipping$ community$ in$ this$ church$ is$ very$ small$ (reflecting$ the$ community).$ It$ holds$ services$
(completely$ in$ Welsh)$ on$ the$ second$ Sunday$ of$ the$ month$ at$ 4pm$ (from$ March$ –$ November).$ Every$ fourth$
Sunday$in$June$and$July,$united$services$are$held$in$Llanfflewin$where$all$the$denominations$in$the$area$join$
together$ at$ 5.00pm.$ The$ annual$ Harvest$ Festival$ on$ the$ first$ Thursday$ in$ September$ is$ an$ important$ annual$
occasion.$Llanfflewin$Church$has$experienced$significant$decline$during$recent$years,$largely$through$the$death$
of$ faithful$ communicants.$ There$ has$ been$ a$ growing$ relationship$ with$ Llanfechell$ Church$ and$ the$ small$
community$at$Llanfflewin$are$very$grateful$to$the$people$of$Llanfechell$for$their$help$$(eg$through$the$annual$
Coffee$evening$on$the$first$Friday$in$May).$Clearly,$there$needs$to$be$thought$about$the$future$of$this$church.$It$
is$hoped$to$keep$the$door$open,$even$if$it$becomes$a$church$which$is$designated$for$‘occasional$use’.$

Like$Llanflewin,$Bodewryd$Church$also$stands$in$an$isolated$position$next$to$a$farm.$The$date$of$foundation$is$
unknown.$ The$ earliest$ reference$ is$ in$ the$ Norwich$ Taxation$ of$ 1254,$ which$ states$ that$ it$ was$ owned$ by$ the$
Augustinian$priory$at$Penmon.$Before$becoming$a$parish$church$for$this$very$rural$area,$it$served$as$a$‘chapel$
of$ ease’$ to$ St$ Eilian’s$ Church,$ Llaneilian.$ The$ current$ building$ is$ reputedly$ the$ ‘second$ smallest’$ church$ on$
Anglesey$ (measuring$ 34$ feet$ 9$ inches$ by$ 14$ feet).$ $ Whilst$ the$ walls$ are$ recognizably$ medieval,$ the$ oldest$
datable$part$of$the$church$is$the$fifteenth$century$doorway$on$the$north$side$of$the$church.$The$building$$was$
restored$ in$ 1867$ by$ Henry$ Kennedy,$ the$ architect$ of$ the$ Diocese$ of$ Bangor,$ after$ the$ church$ was$ struck$ by$
lightning.$The$restoration$(like$that$of$Llanbadrig)$was$funded$by$Lord$Stanley$of$Alderley,$a$convert$to$Islam,$
whose$ donations$ to$ rural$ churches$ carried$ the$ requirement$ that$ Islamic$ detail$ should$ be$ included$ in$ any$
restoration$work.$This$is$the$reason$why$the$windows$have$geometric$patterns$of$small$panes$of$coloured$glass$
(like$those$of$nearby$Rhosbeirio$Church$–$now$closed).$
$$
For$many$years,$the$church$was$associated$with$the$Wynn$(or$Wynne)$family$of$Plas$Bodewryd.$They$had$an$
estate$at$Bodewryd$from$1521$until$1755,$when$Edward$Wynne$(Chancellor$of$the$Diocese$of$Hereford$from$
1707$to$1754)$died$without$male$heirs.$His$uncle,$Humphrey$Humphreys$(who$was$Bishop$of$Bangor$and$then$
Bishop$of$Hereford),$was$married$in$St$Mary's$in$1690;$the$bishop's$sister$had$married$into$the$Wynne$family$
in$1672.$There$are$two$fonts:$one,$which$may$be$medieval$in$origin,$is$a$gritstone$bowl$of$rectangular$shape;$
the$other,$which$may$have$been$added$during$the$19thYcentury$restoration,$is$an$oval$alabaster$bowl,$with$rich$
decoration.$$
$
There$is$a$small$but$active$congregation$at$Bodewryd$whose$ages$range$from$people$in$their$80s$to$18$months.$
They$ try$ to$ encourage$ the$ use$ of$ the$ building$ by$ the$ wider$ community$ and$ are$ working$ with$ the$ Churches$
Conservation$Officer$in$the$Diocese$to$see$how$the$church$might$be$adapted$for$greater$community$use.$Local$
schools$ frequently$ use$ the$ building$ to$ learn$ more$ about$ Christianity.$ Whilst$ the$ building$ is$ quite$ small,$ the$
congregation$ often$ hold$ events$ outside$ the$ church$ to$ raise$ funds$ and$ awareness$ (flower$ festivals,$ fun$ runs,$
supper$evenings,$carol$services).$They$are$determined$to$encourage$some$of$the$new$families$moving$into$the$
rural$area$to$become$involved$in$church$life$and$are$very$positive$about$the$future.$

The$village$of$Llanrhuddlad,$together$with$the$hamlets$of$Llanfairynghornwy$and$Rhydwyn,$the$north$west$tip$
of$the$island$at$Carmel$Head,$and$the$offshore$islands$of$the$Skerries$and$West$Mouse$make$up$the$tiny$rural$
community$of$Cylch$y$Garn.$At$the$2011$census$the$total$population$was$675.$$
$
There$is$a$Community$School$(Ysgol$Cylch$y$Garn)$based$in$Llanrhyddlad$which$in$2011$had$28$pupils.$Cemlyn$
Bay$is$located$in$the$north$east$of$the$community,$and$is$owned$by$the$National$Trust.$It$is$the$site$of$a$nature$
reserve$managed$by$the$North$Wales$Wildlife$Trust,$which$includes$a$lagoon$separated$from$the$sea$by$Esgair$
Gemlyn,$a$shingle$ridge$formed$by$longshore$drift.$Islands$in$the$lagoon$provide$nesting$sites$for$common$and$
Arctic$terns,$and$for$one$of$the$United$Kingdom's$largest$breeding$populations$of$Sandwich$terns.$$

Offshore,$ the$ Skerries$ lie$ north$ west$ of$ Carmel$
Head$ at$ the$ end$ of$ a$ submerged$ reef$ which$ lies$
directly$in$the$path$of$shipping$traveling$between$
Liverpool$ and$ Ireland.$ In$ 1714$ Queen$ Anne$
granted$ William$ Trench$ the$ right$ to$ build$ a$
lighthouse$ on$ the$ rocks,$ and$ to$ levy$ dues$ on$
passing$ ships.$ The$ light$ came$ into$ operation$ in$
1717,$ but$ ship$ owners$ evaded$ payment,$ and$
Trench$ died$ in$ 1729,$ heavily$ in$ debt.$ The$
lighthouse$ was$ eventually$ bought$ by$ Trinity$
House$ in$ 1841,$ the$ last$ privately$ owned$
lighthouse$ in$ the$ British$ Isles$ purchased$ by$ the$
organisation.$It$was$automated$in$1987$
$
Remarkably,$ Cylch$ y$ Garn$ is$ served$ by$ three$
Anglican$churches.$

St$ Rhuddlad’s$ Church$ is$ located$ two$ miles$ east$ of$ the$ village$ of$ Llanrhuddlad$ on$ the$ coast$ overlooking$
Holyhead$ in$ a$ hamlet$ known$ as$ Porth" Swtan$ in$ Welsh$ and$ Church" Bay$ in$ English.$ The$ origin$ of$ the$ Welsh$
name$comes$from$a$breed$of$fish$which$was$caught$there,$known$as$a$whiting$pout$in$English$and$as$a$‘Swtan’$
in$ Welsh.$$ The$ name$ Church$ Bay$ was$ given$ by$ the$ map$ makers$ ,$ i.e.$ EnglishYspeaking$ sailors$ who$ identified$
coastal$areas$by$local$landmarks.$The$church’s$high$steeple$is$an$obvious,$easily$visible$landmark$form$the$sea.$
$
The$ current$ church,$ constructed$ from$ hard$ limestone,$ was$ built$ in$ 1858.$
The$ year$ after$ its$ opening,$ the$ Revd$ Morris$ Williams$ (August$ 20,$ 1809$ Y$
January$3,$1874),$was$inducted$as$Rector$of$Llanrhuddlad$with$Llanfflewin$
with$Llanrhwydrus.$More$commonly$known$by$his$bardic$name$Nicander,$
Williams$made$a$significant$contribution$to$church$and$nation.$He$assisted$
with$the$revision$of$the$Welsh$version$of$the$Book$of$Common$Prayer,$and$
from$the$time$of$the$Aberffraw$eisteddfod$of$1849$onwards$Y$when$he$won$
the$chair$for$an$awdl$on$the$Creation$Y$he$took$a$prominent$part$in$Welsh$
literary$ life.$ He$ frequently$ adjudicated$ and$ competed$ at$ the$ national$
eisteddfod;$ contributed$ often$ to$ Welsh$ magazines;$ translated$ Aesop's$
Fables$ into$ Welsh;$ and$ composed$ a$ number$ of$ hymns.$ Among$ his$
publications$are$Y"Flwyddyn"Eglwysig$(1843)$and$a$metrical$version$of$the$
Psalter$(1850).$He$was$one$of$the$pioneers$of$the$Oxford$Movement$in$the$
diocese$of$Bangor.$The$pulpit$in$Bangor$Cathedral$was$built$in$his$memory.$
Nicander$is$buried$in$the$churchyard.$
At$present,$the$small$but$very$faithful$worshipping$community$gather$here$on$three$Sundays$of$the$month$at$
10am.$ The$ order$ for$ Morning$ Prayer$ is$ said$ on$ the$ second$ and$ fourth$ Sunday$ of$ the$ month$ and$ the$ Holy$
Eucharist$is$celebrated$on$the$second$Sunday$of$the$month.$

St$Mary's$Church,$in$the$hamlet$of$Llanfairynghornwy$is$one$of$5$Grade$I$listed$churches$on$the$Isle$of$Anglesey.$
The$date$of$foundation$of$the$church$is$unknown,$but$the$oldest$parts$date$from$the$11th$or$12th$century.$It$
has$twice$been$enlarged:$in$the$15th$century,$when$the$chancel$was$rebuilt,$and$in$the$16th$century,$when$a$
chapel$was$added$to$the$south$of$the$chancel,$separated$by$three$arches.$The$tower$at$the$west$end$is$from$the$
17th$century.$A$south$porch$of$unknown$date$has$been$converted$into$a$vestry,$and$the$church$is$now$entered$
through$the$tower.$
$
St$ Mary's$ was$ given$ Grade$ 1$ listed$ status$ on$ 12$ May$ 1970,$ as$ "a$ fine$ rural$ parish$ church,$ incorporating$
significant$ early$ Medieval$ fabric,$ including$ a$ 12thYcentury$ chancel$ arch".$ Cadw$ also$ notes$ the$ "good$ late$
Medieval$ additions,$ including$ a$ fine$ 16thYcentury$ arcaded$ chapel”,$ and$ says$ that$ St$ Mary's$ is$ of$ "special$
interest"$ because$ of$ its$ early$ date,$ "and$ for$ the$ quality$ of$ its$ later$ detail".$ Writing$ in$ 1833,$ before$ the$
restoration$ of$ 1847,$ Angharad$ Llwyd$ described$ the$ church$ as$ "a$ spacious$ ancient$ structure,$ partly$ in$ the$
Norman$ style,$ with$ a$ lofty$ square$ tower,$ of$ rude$ architecture".$ She$ noted$ the$ "massive$ circular$ pillars$ and$
arches"$in$the$chancel,$and$the$"peculiar$good$taste"$of$the$architecture$of$the$recently$rebuilt$rectory.$Writing$
in$1862,$the$clergyman$and$antiquarian$Harry$Longueville$Jones$said$that$it$was$"one$of$the$largest$churches$in$
this$ division$ of$ Anglesey".$ He$ said$ that$ it$ had$ recently$ been$ "judiciously$ repaired$ and$ restored"$ by$ James$
Williams$and$was$"now$one$of$the$best$specimens$of$an$old$parish$church$in$the$island",$adding$that$the$east$
window$ was$ "good$ in$ detail$ and$ in$ execution".1$ People$ associated$ with$ the$ church$ include$James$ Williams,$ a$
19thYcentury$rector$who$was$awarded$a$gold$medal$for$his$efforts$to$save$lives$at$sea,$and$his$greatYgrandson,$

Llanrhwydrys$(St$Rhwydrys)$Church$is$
a$stunning$building$(in$the$middle$of$a$
field)$in$the$vicinity$of$Cemlyn$Bay$and$
Hen$Borth.$The$Church$was$founded$in$
the$ 6th$ century$ by$ St$ Rhwydrys$ and$
the$ present$ Church$ dates$ from$ the$
12th$ century.$ This$ is$ one$ of$ the$ most$
isolated$ of$ Anglesey's$ churches$ in$ one$
of$ the$ most$ beautiful$ locations.$ Its$
proximity,$ however,$ to$ the$ Anglesey$
Coastal$ Path$ has$ probably$ made$ it$
accessible$to$more$visitors$than$ever$in$
its$long$history.$Within$the$church$is$a$
small$ porch,$ nave,$ north$ chapel$ and$
chancel,$ overlooked$ by$ an$ interesting$
wooden$ gallery.$ With$ Llanbabo,$ it$ is$
the$ only$ Church$ on$ the$ Island$
constructed$with$crucks!$

The$church$is$in$occasional$use.$There$are$monthly$services$during$the$Summer$months$at$2pm$on$the$fourth$
Sunday$of$the$month.$There$is$a$delightful$little$congregation$who$love$and$look$after$this$ancient$and$beautiful$
place.$Often$the$access$to$the$building$gets$very$wet$and$muddy$during$the$winter$months$making$the$church$

The$village$of$Llanfaethlu$marks$the$southern$most$point$of$the$Bro$Padrig$Ministry$Area.$It$is$six$miles$south$
of$Cemais$Bay$on$the$A5025$towards$Holyhead.$It$is$a$compact$village,$overlooking$the$sea,$with$a$population$
of$ approximately$ 400$ people.$ $ John$ Davies$ (Sion$ Dafydd$ Rhys),$ Renaissance$ scholar,$ was$ born$ here$ in$ 1534.$
There$is$a$school$(Ysgol$Ffrwd$Win)$which$serves$the$village$and$the$neighbouring$hamlet$of$Llanfwrog$(2½$
miles$ southeast)$ (32$ pupils$ in$ 2013).$ Within$ the$ village,$ there$ are$ two$ small$ businesses.$ Condessa$ Welsh$
Liqueurs$have$been$in$business$for$over$40$years.$Their$products$range$from$fruit$to$cream$liqueurs,$cocktail$
recipes$ and$ liqueur$ gift$ boxes.! Richard$ Jones$ started$ the$ business$ in$ Chester$ in$ 1969.$ In$ 1989$ it$ moved$ to$ a$
8,000$ sq.$ ft.$ liqueur$ factory$ and$ winery$ in$ Llanfaethlu.$ O$ R$ Jones$ and$ Son$ is$ a$ well$ established$ coach$ travel$
company.$Half$a$mile$north$west$of$the$village$lies$Carreglwyd$ –$a$fine$house$which$was$built$in$1634$by$Dr$
William$ Griffiths.$ He$ was$ the$ Chancellor$ of$ St$ Asaph$ and$ Master$ of$ the$ Rolls$ to$ Charles$ the$ First.$ His$
grandfather,$ Sir$ William$ Griffiths,$ had$ been$ the$ Rector$ of$ Llanfaethlu$ for$ 44$ years.$ Charles$ the$ First$ gave$ Dr$
Griffiths$one$of$the$five$Edward$Bower$copies$of$Van$Dyke's$portrait$at$the$time$of$his$trial.$This$portrait$hangs$
in$the$Dining$Room$of$Carreglwyd$today$which$is$still$owned$by$descendents$of$William$Griffiths.$$

St$ Maethlu’s$ Church$ is$ a$ fine$ building$ just$ northwest$ of$ the$ village$ and$ within$ sight$ of$ the$ sea$ below$ (and$ St$
Rhuddlad’s$Church).$It$is$a$single$cell$building$of$c.1475$with$a$chancel$by$Kennedy$of$1874.$The$nave$ceiling$
has$ a$ plaster$ vault$ (unusual$ for$ Anglesey),$ probably$ fixed$ to$ the$ camber$ of$ the$ medieval$ arch$ braced$ roof.$
There$ are$ fragments$ of$ Caroline$ classical$ woodwork$ from$ the$ box$ pews$ of$ the$ Griffith$ family$ of$ Carreglwyd.$
There$are$many$monuments$to$the$Griffiths$family$and$their$servants.$
$
The$ congregation$ is$ small$ but$ faithful.$ Currently,$ there$ is$ a$ weekly$ service$ on$ Sunday$ at$ 9am.$ Worship$ is$
entirely$ in$ Welsh.$ Morning$ Prayer$ is$ said$ on$ the$ first$ and$ third$ Sundays;$ the$ Eucharist$ is$ celebrated$ on$ the$
second$ Sunday$ and$ the$ reserved$ sacrament$ is$ administered$ on$ the$ fourth$ Sunday.$ There$ is$ a$ branch$ of$ the$
Mothers’$Union$who$meet$on$the$last$Thursday$of$each$month$and$has$an$average$attendance$of$12$members.$
The$church$attempts$to$hold$fundraising$and$social$activities$throughout$the$year$such$as$quizzes$and$meals.$

Of$ all$ the$ Ministry$ Areas$ on$ Anglesey,$ Bro$ Padrig$ is$ the$ one$ with$ least$ people$ licensed$ for$ public$ ministry.$
There$is$currently$one$retired$priest.$Part$of$the$remit$of$a$new$leader$will$be$to$create$a$team$and$encourage$
vocations$ to$ licensed$ lay$ ministry.$ We$ do,$ however,$ recognise$ that$ this$ will$ take$ time$ and$ therefore$ it$ is$
intended$to$appoint$a$half$time$Associate$Priest$to$be$shared$between$this$Ministry$Area$and$the$Area$of$Bro$
Cwyfan$ (to$ the$ south$ of$ Bro$ Padrig).$ Clearly,$ a$ new$ leader$ will$ wish$ to$ think$ through$ the$ pattern$ of$ Sunday$
worship$ and,$ following$ reflection$ and$ consultation,$ and$ devise$ a$ pattern$ that$ will$ work$ for$ this$ area.$ It$ is,$
however,$proposed$that$the$following$pattern$would$provide$a$starting$place.$$

At$a$meeting$on$23$June$2014,$an$open$meeting$expressed$the$following$hopes$for$a$new$Vicar:$

1."A"priest"who"is"spiritually"focussed"and"can"constantly"remind"the"Ministry"Area"of"its"purpose"
The$Ministry$Area$seeks$someone$who$knows$their$need$of$God$and$who$can$hold$constantly$hold$God$before$
them$as$the$reason$for$the$existence$of$the$church.$They$feel$that$it$is$easy$for$the$church$to$be$distracted$and$
that$the$Vicar$needs$to$guard$the$vision$of$the$Kingdom$of$God$in$the$area.$

2."A"priest"who"is"committed"in"outreach"to"young"people"and"families"
The$Ministry$Area$would$like$to$welcome$more$children$and$young$families$into$the$life$of$the$church.$It$seeks$
a$priest$who$is$committed$to$this$task.$As$has$been$mentioned$in$the$profile,$the$Diocese$is$helping$to$resource$
this$ aspect$ of$ ministry$ through$ the$ ministry$ of$ the$ Anglesey$ CYFME$ (Children,$ Young$ People$ and$ Families$
Ministry$ Enabler).$ The$ Ministry$ Area$ are$ anxious$ that$ the$ new$ Vicar$ will$ work$ with$ the$ CYFME$ and$ the$
community$to$build$this$part$of$the$church$community.$

The$Ministry$Area$seeks$a$priest$who$will$help$them$embrace$a$vision$for$church$in$this$area$which$is$rooted$in$

on$ worship$ and$ activities$ that$ will$ attract$ people$ to$ be$ part$ of$ the$ life$ of$ the$ church$ and$ seek$ to$ reYenergise$
passion$ for$ the$ Gospel$ in$ these$ communities.$ The$ Ministry$ Area$ has$ a$ desire$ to$ reYconnect$ with$ some$ of$ the$

The$Ministry$Area$recognises$its$context$as$intensely$rural$and,$within$this$culture,$the$importance$of$building$

The$pastoral$care$of$God’s$people$is$an$important$task$of$the$church$and$particularly$important$in$these$rural$
communities.$The$Ministry$Area$seek$to$appoint$a$Vicar$who$is$committed$to$developing$a$culture$of$pastoral$
care$and$to$being$deeply$involved$in$the$pastoral$care$of$God’s$people$himself$or$herself.$

There$are$four$relatively$small$junior$schools$in$the$Ministry$Area$and$there$is$a$good$relationship$between$the$
schools$ and$ the$ church.$ The$ Ministry$ Area$ would$ like$ these$ relationships$ to$ be$ developed$ and$ strengthened.$
Whilst$ as$ yet$ there$ are$ no$ Open$ the$ Book$ teams$ operating$ in$ these$ schools,$ the$ Ministry$ Area$ is$ open$ to$
exploring$such$possibilities$with$a$new$Incumbent.$

Whilst$ this$ Ministry$ Area$ boasts$ some$ outstanding$ buildings$ (most$ of$ which$ are$ in$ good$ order)$ it$ is$ anxious$
that$ the$ buildings$ are$ used$ to$ their$ full$ potential$ for$ the$ mission$ and$ ministry$ of$ the$ church.$ Bodewryd$ and$
Llanfechell$ in$ particular$ have$ opened$ conversations$ about$ how$ they$ might$ use$ buildings$ more$ creatively$ for$
the$benefit$of$the$local$community.$The$Diocese,$through$its$Churches$and$Conservation$Officer,$is$committed$
to$helping$with$this$process.$
