From the point I

Once we obtained a
location it took roughly 6 months to build

Many aspiring dancers
like to perform, often for many
different reasons. This is why we
offer showcases. We had our
1st annual Fall Dancefest Showcase in November 2014 and it was
huge success! We now have videos of that show available. The
DVDs are $30 each and we are
taking orders now… Those that
pre-ordered, your videos are available now!
Our next show date is
already set! The Spring Fling show
will be held at Southern
Star Ballroom Center at
3pm on Sunday April 19th,
2015!
Now is the time
to start preparations for
performing if you would
like to try it! Ask your
teacher how you can par-
ticipate!! Even if your teacher
doesn’t work out of SSBC, you
can participate!

The Benefits of Pilates & Yoga for Dancers by Sunny Davis
A ballerina walks into
Joe Pilate’s studio, he looks up
and asks her, where are you going
like an elephant? She wails “now
you are calling me an elephant”.
He says, “I wouldn’t insult the
elephant. An elephant could walk
through this room and make less
noise. An elephant walks delicately, but
you –
clump,
clump,
clump.”
What he
was telling her is
she lacked
the ability
to move
from her
core with
flexibility
and control which would allow her to be
lighter on her feet.
Dancing can create imbalance in the body from repetitive motion and unusual body
postures. Yoga and Pilates are a
great way to bring the body back into
balance. Pilates focuses on developing a strong core and yoga focuses
on improving our flexibility.
When we move from our
core we are able to use our body
efficiently, with no wasted effort.
This protects our joints and muscles
from over
usage
injuries.
Also having a
strong
core allows us to
have good
posture.
When the
spine can
come into
its natural
alignment
we can take the stress off of being
upright and move gracefully.
When we maintain our
flexibility with yoga it allows our
joints to move freely within their full
range of motion (ROM). When we
lack the flexibility to move a joint
within its full ROM, the muscles
pull on the joint creating friction
and unhealthy movement patterns. If this continues over time,
the joint can become injured.
Inflexible muscles are the ones
we pull, strain or tear. It is much
easier to re-gain flexibility than it
is to repair or re-hab an injured
joint or muscle.
Another benefit of yoga
is learning to move with the
breath. When we co-ordinate
movement with our breathing we
are fluid and graceful.
So, why not make an
investment in maintaining your
body so that you are able to enjoy
the things you love to do, like
dance!
Sunny Davis and Diane Stakoe,
together, have several yoga &
pilates classes available at SSBC
during the week. Check out our
schedule for specific options and
times!
