Welcome to the August edition of Living Local. Firstly,
I would like to congratulate Mrs Jill Mercer, Mr Mark Bailey
and Mr Nick Speranza on their re-election to the Board.
I would also like to say a big thank you to the members who
acknowledged their great work and voted for them. I was
recently reminded by one of our members – now appointed to
another club board – of all the behind-the-scenes work Directors carry out.
We are lucky to have a diverse and experienced bunch of talented individuals who make
up our Board and donate their time and expertise to making our Club great.
A number of years ago, the Club purchased the two white shopfronts adjacent to the
premises, with the intent of expanding our footprint. These shops are now vacant and
Mr David Conway and I met with our architects recently to start creating preliminary draft
designs and convey our thoughts and vision for this expansion. I will keep you posted
on our progress.
I am happy to report that to date this year we have achieved an operating profit of
$581,000 and are ahead-of-budget by $86,000. David and his team are always
streamlining the business and challenging how to manage the Club, and this is the direct
result.
As our regulars know, 5 Elements is hitting its stride and the lamb shanks has been an
unparalleled success! We will keep reviewing the menu and the service the restaurant
provides to ensure it continues to be your venue of choice.
Finally, I am sad to report that Dennis, one of our long-term bus drivers, has recently retired
to the North Coast. I am sure that many of you will join us
in
wishing him well. He will be missed.

Hello and welcome to the spring edition of Living Local.
It is great to see so many active members utilising the Club’s facilities.
Congratulations to the Board on being re-elected – we look forward
to another two years of working harmoniously towards our strategic
goals in making Club Five Dock RSL the ultimate one-stop destination.
We are pleased to announce the Club has donated in excess of
$171,000 through ClubGrants and in-kind donations for this financial
year. It should be recognised that local community groups, children’s
charities and local schools have been the focus in our donations and
support program. In addition, over $600,000 has been spent over
the last six months on members’ benefits, which include promotions,
entertainment and discounts.
The C5DRSL team has had many
fundraising activities throughout the
year, including Honour our Heroes and
City2Surf, and there are many more
ahead, such as the MS Gong Ride and
National Breast Cancer Awareness
Month. I would like to thank all the staff for their participation
and thank our members for their generous support. You can read more
about these activities on page 9.
Finally, I would like to congratulate all staff that have reached five,
10 and 20-year milestones. It is so pleasing to see that 44 per cent
of our staff has been with us for five or more years, and I look forward
to many more years to come.

rosé was a glass of Mateus which was
extremely sweet – I am sure many of
you reading this would have shared
the same experience! Back then there
wasn’t much to choose from in the
world of rosé.
However, things have definitely changed,
and this wine style has come a long way
in Australia. Today you can walk into
any major bottle shop and choose from
an extended range of rosé, with the vast
majority being bone dry.

about all things vino!
Spring is here, summer is just around the
corner and there is no better time to be
enjoying a glass of rosé!
Many people have a misconception of
this style of wine. When rosé first hit the
shelves in Australia, the majority of brands
were sweet. My very first experience with
When I am pairing wine with food,
sometimes dishes can be tricky to match
because of the range of flavours on the
one plate. When this happens, rosé is
always my ‘go-to’ wine. This style can be
paired with fish, chicken, beef or pork –
depending on how the food is prepared
– and work perfectly.
The Nine Vines Grenache Shiraz Rosé
from South Australia is excellent value for
money. With lovely fresh-cut strawberries
and raspberries on the nose, this wine can
be deceiving and you would be forgiven
for thinking it will be sweet. In fact these
flavours carry through on the palate,
perfectly balanced with
crisp acidity, leaving
you with a long, dry
flavoursome finish. It’s a
wonderful all-rounder!
Nine Vines can be
enjoyed with any of
the entrees and salad
selection from the
5 Elements menu or my
favourite, the seafood
marinara with your
choice of pasta.

These fantastic employees have joined the ranks of many other long-term employees. In fact, 22 per cent of staff at Club Five Dock RSL have
worked here for ten+ years, and 44 per cent for five years or more. We think that is pretty impressive!

Wow! Well, I’ve seen a lot of cosmetic changes to the
Club because we keep rejuvenating ourselves. There
has been changes within management a few times with
people moving up in to more senior roles. The Club
always looks like its growing and I love that.

Meet Joanna
Joanna is an employee who has been with
Club Five Dock RSL for less than a year. Her
story is different in that Joanna is the third sister
in her family to join the Club while studying
at University. Joanna’s oldest sister Isabella
first joined the Club in 2010, as a casual
employee. When she finished in 2012,
she recommended middle sister Stephanie.
When Stephanie finished up with the Club
in 2016, Stephanie recommended her
younger sister Joanna to continue their legacy. All three have six
years of service at Club Five Dock RSL and we are delighted to have had these
amazing sisters working for us during this time.
Joanna, what advice did your sisters give to you before joining Club Five Dock
RSL? My sisters have always said that Club Five Dock RSL is a family, so their
advice was to always respect your workplace, colleagues and customers. They
also advised me to have fun and work hard.
What do you recommend to any future employees wanting to join the Club?
I would definitely pass on this advice to anyone wanting to join the Club Five
Dock RSL team, however, I would add that along with a strong work ethic, bring
a positive and friendly attitude. A simple smile goes a long way!
SPRING 2016
Team C5DRSL, led by CEO David Conway will be
taking on the 2016 Gong Ride, held on Sunday 6th
November to raise money for MS.
This will be David’s fourth year entering this one-day
journey, alongside staff member Roberto. This year he will
ride with newbies Chris, Paul, Eduardo, Katherine and
Bayley.
The Gong Ride is a special part of Sydney’s cycling
heritage and has been running for over 30 years.
Hundreds of thousands of cyclists will hit the road to
Wollongong in the hope of raising over $20 million to
support people with MS.
A Bald Move
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and so in
support of those who have been affected, staff will be
shaving, cutting or colouring their hair on
FRIDAY OCTOBER 7TH
to raise money for the
National Breast Cancer Foundation.
Breast cancer affects 1 in 8 people in their lifetime.
Please join us as we raise money to help cut this figure
to zero deaths from breast cancer by 2030.
Sunday, 14th August 2016, saw
thousands of participants take part
in the City2Surf fun run – from
Sydney CBD to Bondi Beach – to
raise funds for their nominated charities.
This year, C5DRSL’s team comprised 14 members including
Directors, management and staff who participated to raise money for
Alzheimer’s NSW.
Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia, affecting up
to 70% of all people with dementia. It was first recorded in 1907 by
Dr Alois Alzheimer.

memory, thinking and behaviour
• T he biggest risk factor for having Alzheimer’s disease is increasing
age, with three in 10 people over 85 having dementia
