Maidique Campus. The new $34 million Nursing & Health Sciences (NHS) Building encompasses 115,000 square feet of space housing state-of-the-art interactive skills laboratories, extensive computer suites, specialized training, evaluation and study areas, and ample lecture classrooms. The facility serves all departments of the CNHS: Nursing, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Communication Sciences & Disorders, Athletic Training, Health Sciences, and Health Information Management. CNHS administrators worked closely with the globally recognized architectural firm HOK and its lead architect, Yann Weymouth, to create one of the most technologically advanced and innovative nursing and healthcare teaching facilities in the region. Dr. Divina Grossman, Dean of the College, remarked on the excitement generated by the new building, “The technology and resources that come with the new building will foster cutting-edge nursing and healthcare education standards and practices, support important research discoveries, and set the benchmark for advanced academic studies and instruction in nursing and health sciences.” The Dedication Day Celebration begins with a symposium in the morning, Addressing the Nation’s Healthcare Priorities Through Research & Leadership. This thought-provoking forum features two panel discussions with leaders from the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, as well as distinguished CNHS alumni. The celebration continues in the afternoon with a special presentation by University and College administrators and dignitaries, a ribbon cutting ceremony, tours of the building, and guest receptions with musical entertainment. The Gateway to FIU’s Academic Health Sciences Center The NHS Building stands as the gateway to the University’s highly anticipated campus health center. The Building’s distinct 5-story, 2-wing (Classroom/Lab Wing and Administrative Wing) structure connected by upperlevel walkways creates a gateway that straddles the proposed Avenue of the Sciences. This leads to the Academic Health Sciences Center emerging on the northeast corner of the Modesto A. Maidique Campus. Next on the landscape will be the new Miami-Dade County Health Department building, co-located with the Robert Stempel College of Public Health & Social Work, and the Miami-Dade County Ambulatory Care Center. Grossman continued, “Our new building represents this University’s commitment to produce highly skilled, culturally competent nurses and healthcare professionals who will serve our communities. We welcome the continued support from the community, private enterprise and government in translating this vision into concrete reality.” Building Dedication NL V2:Layout 1 1/26/10 2:49 PM Page 2 Simulation at Core of Real-World Teaching Mock Hospital, Outpatient Clinics and Rehab Center Promote Advanced, Interdisciplinary Instruction and Collaboration At the educational core of the new NHS Building are the third floor Simulation Center (SimCenter), and the fourth floor Rehabilitation Center (RehabCenter). These Centers feature special labs, technology, and real-life care settings (e.g. hospital stations, exam rooms, residential venues) that can be used individually or together in a variety of combinations to accommodate instruction within and across the College’s disciplines. The underlying concept is to create functionally flexible laboratories that promote interdisciplinary collaboration. “The Sim and Rehab Centers allow students across the spectrum of our healthcare disciplines to learn under different real-life, real-time scenarios, from emergency/trauma response to at-home rehabilitation care, and to learn their professional role in the context of a patient’s complete healthcare team,” explained Dean Divina Grossman. The SimCenter emphasizes nursing and critical care instruction and features stateof-the-art equipment and instruments for hands-on use by students. The technology makes possible enhanced clinical and critical thinking training by incorporating the latest cutting-edge simulation, digital imaging projection and closed circuit monitoring, and web-based technologies. Highlights include: • Basic Nursing Lab: a real-size mock-up of a hospital unit, with 15 adjoining patient beds laid out around two centralized nurses stations. • 8 Simulation Rooms: individual patient areas, including high-tech simulated patient mannequins and full complement of diagnostic equipment designed to simulate an operating room, critical care unit, emergency room, neonatal/pediatric care unit and primary care clinic settings. • 3 Control Rooms: for operating computerized patient care scenarios and monitoring students’ progress across all simulation rooms through closed circuit video and recording equipment. • 2 Debriefing Rooms: where instructors and students can review, discuss, and evaluate student performances from the day’s simulations. The RehabCenter complements the critical patient care and treatment capabilities of the SimCenter. The flexible design of the RehabCenter labs allows for a variety of uses and training scenarios by the Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Communication Sciences & Disorders and Athletic Training departments. The labs of the RehabCenter include: • Activities of Daily Living Lab • Neuromusculoskeletal Lab • Audiology Lab • Rehabilitation Lab • Gait Analysis Lab • Speech & Language Skills Lab • Pediatric Lab • Therapeutic Activities Lab LEAD DONORS We gratefully acknowledge the generous gifts of these major supporters, without whom this building would not have been possible. Kirk Landon Pamela Garrison Prep Station CNHS Building Takes The “LEED” FIU’s First LEED-Registered Building Features Miami’s First “Green Roof” The new NHS Building was officially LEED registered when construction began, and is on track to achieve Silver LEED certification, making it the first LEED-certified building in the University’s history. LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is a third-party certification program and the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of sustainable green building and development practices. “This new building will not only be one of the most advanced and dynamic nursing and healthcare education and research facilities in the region, but also a successful example of the University’s growing commitment to environmental awareness and preservation,” commented Dr. Divina Grossman, Dean of the College. Among the design “eco-highlights” of the new NHS Building is Miami’s very first “Green Roof.” From the south lobbies of the 3rd, 4th and 5th floors, you can look out the window and see the low-maintenance “xeriscape” grass and vegetation planted on the roof of the 2nd floor corridor. In addition to its aesthetics, the “Green Roof,” which will only be sustained from natural rainwater, will help insulate the corridor below and absorb the heat of the sun’s rays. Other eco-friendly features of the NHS Building include: Sheridan Healthcorp • Prevalence of windows lets natural light illuminate classrooms and offices. Conference Room • Occupancy and daylight dimming sensor lighting in classrooms and offices helps lower energy consumption. Gaumard Scientific, Inc. SimFamily of Five • Sunrise/sunset timers and sensors manage landscape, building exterior and lobby lighting operations. Miami Children’s Hospital Admissions & Information Center North Shore Medical Center Basic Nursing Lab Equipment • Insulated-laminated glass windows, metal shades and light shelves cut solar loads. • Energy recovery systems capture energy from cool and dry building exhaust air. • Variable flow water and air systems are used in the building during off-peak times. Skanska USA Building, Inc. Lectern – Distance Education Classroom Students Find “Comfort Zone” in New Building Whether sitting in classrooms in the pursuit of learning, cramming for tests at study carrels, or socializing with friends in the student commons, students in the new NHS Building have many “comfort zones.” CNHS leaders worked closely with the building’s architects to design the NHS Building to make their students feel as much at home as possible. “We had a collective vision to make this a student-centric building,” said Dean Divina Grossman. “Our students are the heart of the College. We wanted to create a comfortable, calming learning environment that would be socially welcoming and inviting as well as academically progressive and replete with advanced education tools and resources.” Students are already taking advantage of the countless seating areas throughout the building, such as comfortable chairs, sofas, lounges and benches where they can congregate, pore over notes from the latest chapter in their text books, or even take a well-earned nap between, not through, classes. Other “student-friendly” features include: •Student Activities Center •Student Services Center •Student commons area, café and patio •PhD carrel room •Student lockers Mathew Forbes Romer Foundation, Inc. Pediatric Evaluation Lab Dr. Kathleen K. Blais Lectern – Auditorium SimRoom Gaumard SimFamily Patient simulators being utilized in the NHS Building include the Gaumard SimFamily of Five: mother, father, two children and newborn patients. Patient simulators are used in the instruction of adult, pediatric, neonatal and advanced patient care. The SimFamily of Five was donated by Gaumard Scientific, Inc., developers of interactive computer-operated adult and pediatric patient mannequins used in healthcare education.
