Lake El Salto at Full Pool
N
othing is more pleasing as
we kick off the 2006/2007
season than the current
water level in Lake El Salto.
The lake is at full pool. If you were
here last summer when the lake was
way down, you might find it hard to
believe how it looks today. An
extraordinary rainy season last
month brought the change.
The high water level is certain to
increase the early season angling
potential. These next few months
will see some of the finest surface
fishing of the year. When the lake is
full fish always prowl the shallows.
Bass fishing holds no greater thrill
than watching a good one blast a
floating bait. You won’t want to miss
being in on it!

2006 Anglers Inn Monster Bass Tournament
A
nglers Inn held the
tournament to end all
tournaments Oct. 5-10 on
fabulous Lake El Salto and
the results were so staggering we're
planning on doing more in the
coming season!
The idea behind our Monster Bass
Tournament was to match the best
anglers who visit us each season
against the world’s best bass lake.
And to make it even more exciting,
we used an elimination format that
whittled down this select field over
four days under the watchful eyes of
our official observer, Bassmaster
Magazine editor James Hall,
Associate Director of conservation,
B.A.S.S. Chris Horton and
professional angler Joe Thomas.
The fishing was nothing short of
spectacular. Records fell and we
demonstrated that October can be
an outstanding month to visit El
Salto. Besides the big-bass action,
the lake is full and at its greenest and
lushest - very tropical looking - best.
Based on their past successes. We
chose Les Melton and Joe Bullock
(both have held five-bass records on
El Salto, 71-1/ 2 pounds and 67 1/2
pounds respectively); and Terry
Crafton and Katie Watson, who
have caught more 10-pound-plus
bass from the lake than any other
two guests. They were given a single
day to locate fish before the fun
began.
The winner was Les Melton with a
total of 20 bass weighing 122
pounds. His average bass weighed
6.1 pounds. Bullock was second with
120 pounds.
The Monster Bass Tournament was
a smashing success. A free DVD of
the tournament is available at our
website.
As a result, we're planning another
Monster Bass competition for our
top four big-bass anglers, as well as
special contests for couples, twoperson teams and father-son and
father-daughters. Be sure to let us
know if you are interested!

expenses paid fishing trip to Lake El
Salto with Anglers Inn.
They will then compete in the 2007

winner will receive a five-year A-Team
membership valued at $25,000, and
up to 5 visits, one per year (staying
in the El Presidente suite and fishing

Take The MONSTER BASS Challenge!
If you land one of the heaviest bass in your region
of the 2006 ESPN Outdoors Bassmaster Series
presented by Advance Auto Parts, you may win
more than the daily big-fish prize. You might
qualify for a special tournament hosted by
Anglers Inn on fabled Lake El Salto, Mexico. After
the 2006 season, 12 ESPN Outdoors Bassmaster
Series anglers will compete for additional prizes
in the MONSTER BASS Challenge presented by
BASS and Anglers Inn. The tournament will
consist of one practice day and three days of
competition.
To qualify, you simply have to catch the biggest
bass in your division, and that fish has to be one
of the two heaviest divisional lunkers in your
region. So, the more tournaments you fish, the
better your odds of winning an expenses-paid
5-night/4-day trip to Anglers Inn on Lake El Salto
(Expenses include round-trip airfare,
transportation to and from Anglers Inn, meals,
room and fishing).
The angler who catches the biggest fish in the
MONSTER BASS Challenge will win the Grand
Prize of $25,000 to be used on account at Lake
El Salto with Anglers Inn. The runner-up will
receive an $11,000 credit with Anglers Inn.

Our 2005-2006 Season Highlights
O
ur customers enjoyed
another outstanding
season on Lake El Salto in
2005-2006. Here are just some of the
highlights:
OCTOBER
Chuck Aedo of California caught
an 11 1/2-pounder and 13 1/2pounder by fishing a Zoom Brush
Hog in submerged trees next to the
bank. Florida's Pat Sherbak was on
a trip with ESPN folks when he
caught a 10- and 12-pounder. ESPN
Outdoors personality Mark Zona
caught 10- and 12 pound bass on
the same trip and lost count of the
5- to 7-pounders he released (on a
citrus-colored Bomber Fat Free Shad).
California's John Pierce used
topwaters to catch a 9-pounder and
several in the 6- to 8-pound range.
NOVEMBER
A terrific month as the weather
cooled and the bass headed for the
shallows. Japanese angler Haime
"Jimmy" Murata boated an 11 1/2pounder on a topwater plug in the
morning and then added an 11pounder on a spinnerbait a couple
of hours later. Jim Niemic, staff
writer for Western Outdoors News,
and his wife, Toni, caught a 10- and
8-pounder, respectively on the same
morning. Our guide put us on three
bass in the 10-pound class in one
day. New Mexico's Bill Fenn
demonstrated how much damage a
fly-rodder can do by catching 183
bass in three days up to 7 1/2 pounds.
Bassmaster Magazine senior
writer Robert Montgomery and
friend Norm Klayman caught and
Pat Sherbak
Florida Outdoors Magazine
released more than 300 bass in a fiveday visit with many in the 5- to 9pound range.

Jim Niemic visited us again and
again, he released a 10-pounder on
a 10-inch Texas-rigged worm. Alex

catching 70 to 80 fish a day up to 9

Later in the month, Bob Owen
upped the ante with a 13-pound
beauty. Carmin Rosato and Rick
Downey also had a great trip catching 120 to 300 fish a day up to
10 pounds. On the 200-bass day,
most of their success came on RatL-Traps fished in one area.

The New Year got off to a great start
as Les Melton visited us for the 25th
time and caught a total of 491 bass
during six days. Included were (42)
7-pounders, (10) 8-pounders, (4) 9pounders and (1) 10-pounder (most
on 10-inch Berkley Power worms).
Arizona's Grant and Kent Hall
boated more than 250 bass up to 11
1/2 pounds, while Mike Frost used
a Carolina-rigged 10-inch Power

More large bass began showing up
with regularity in February. For
example, John Hendrix caught three
9-pound-plus bass in a three-hour
period. And them he added a 10 1/2pounder that afternoon!
Dianne Sedy landed a 12-pound
bass in 20-feet of water off a creek
channel. Then longtime fishing
friend Robin Hass boated her own
12-pounder the next day on a Zoom
lizard. Father and daughter Donald
and Lauren Gossett enjoyed a
memorable trip highlighted by a 10
1/2-pounder, a 9 1/2-pounder and
three over 8-pounds.

11 and 10 1/2-pounds, respectively.
John and Mark Faylor reported
catching 265 bass up to 11 1/2pounds (four topped the 10-pound
mark). A group from Bassmaster
Magazine visited us once again in
March with the usual terrific results.
The first spot that editor James Hall
stopped on surrendered 17 bass up
to 7 pounds on a Fat Free Shad. Chris
Horton and Stacy Twiggs lost track
of the bass they caught up to 9pounds.
APRIL
The water level began dropping
and the post-spawn bass moved out
to suspend on the edge of trees and
creek channels. BASS Times editor
Matt Vincent reported scoring
consistently on 10-inch Power
Worms, 3/4-ounce Stanley
spinnerbaits and Zoom Swim Baits.
He set the hook on more than 350
bass during his four-day trip.
Hank Jones
Bassmaster editor in chief Dave
Precht enjoyed a 100-bass day
outing with numerous 5- to 8pounders.
Bass Pro Shops' Lynn Reeves got
a cranking lesson from no less than
the greatest crankbait fisherman on
the planet, David Fritts. The pair
caught 125 fish on Rapala DT10 and
14 divers. Their largest weighed 9
1/4-pounds. Steve Quinn, senior
editor of In-Fisherman, said: "In over
30 years of traveling to the best bass
waters of the U.S., Canada, and
Mexico, I've seen a lot of superb
fishing spots. After our TV filming
trip to Anglers Inn in April, I can say
that El Salto is currently the most
dynamic and productive body of
water I've ever seen for largemouth
bass. Right now, El Salto is home to
a seemingly unlimited population of
bass from yearling-size bass to giant
10-pound lunkers that will leave you
shaking. You can literally sit in one
spot and catch 40 or 50 bass including trophy-size fish."

Renowned college basketball
coach Bobby Knight brought his fly
rod to El Salto. "The quality of the
fishing and the effort of the staff
make Anglers Inn one of the very
best fishing experiences anywhere
in the world," he said.
MAY
The dropping water level pushed
anglers farther offshore this month.
But the big bass kept coming! Ben
Dilsaver's 12-year-old son Mitch
caught three huge bass on his
birthday - including fish weighing
11- pounds, 4-ounces and 10pounds, 6-ounces. David Holland
caught twin bass they were 8pounds, 14-ounces one day. John
O'Neill reported catch two 10pounders, three 9-pounders and a
dozen 8-pounders on 10-inch Power
Worms fished around deep treetops.

many newcomers to bass fishing do
you know who took bass of more
than 7-pounds their very first time
out?" Fagerstrom said "Stewart did
and he had other dandy to fish to go
along with it."
JUNE
We had a few cloudy days with light
rain in June and it ignited a feeding
frenzy on El Salto, particularly on
small swimbaits and heavy
spinnerbaits. Most larger bass came
off of creek channels with deeper
water close by.
Aquatic Consultants Inc., group of
10 anglers from Albuquerque, New
Mexico visited Anglers Inn in early
June and each caught at least one
bass of 7-pounds or larger. Nine of
the 10 had bass that were 8-pounds
or better.
Bass Pro Shops' Lynn Reeves
Mitch Dilsaver
returned in June to find 5- and 7-inch
Sticko soft stickbaits to be the key to
caught bass up to 10-pounds. BASS
Times editor Matt Vincent also
made another visit and watched son
Jesse, 14, catch the largest bass of his
life. They also enjoyed some
excellent saltwater action while in
Mazatlan that included landing a 60pound striped marling and 90pound sailfish.

Fly-fishing Discovering El Salto
W
e've been telling longrod lovers for years that
Lake El Salto is an
absolute fly fisherman's paradise,
particularly in the fall. And in 2005,
the fly fishing community began
learning that fact for themselves.
The 2005-2006 season was a big
one for fly-casters who heeded out
advice.
George Honroe
We launched a major promotion to
attract fly-rodders to El Salto during
the prime time for their favorite type
of fishing -- October through
December. And it was very
successful. More than 90 fly-rodders
took advantage of our special deal
that allowed two anglers to fish for
the price of 1-1/2. And they went
away ecstatic.
Top fishing writers like Outdoor
Life's Jerry Gibbs and Gray's
Sporting Journal's James Babb
found out first hand what a
wonderful lake it is for fly fishing.
Another notable fly fisherman who
joined us was renowned basketball
coach Bobby Knight. They went
home highly impressed (look for
stories in the magazines soon).
Last fall, our fly fishermen enjoyed
100- to 200-bass days. At times, the
fishing was ridiculously easy. That's
because in the fall the bass flock to
the shallows where they pin shad
and tilapia fry up against the bank
and gorge themselves. This is the
time when you can leave your
sinking lines at home because the
bass will fall victim to poppers and
other surface fly offerings.
Fall is the only time that we
promote our excellent fly-fishing
opportunities because Lake El Salto
largemouth tend to be considerably
deeper during the other months of
the season. The exception is the
month of April, which is another
good topwater month as a variety of
insect hatches bring the bass shallow
again.
How good is the fly-fishing on Lake
Bill Fenn
El Salto? Consider the words of Bill
Fenn of New Mexico: "I've fished
many places around the world with
a fly rod, but this was the first trip
specifically to fly fish for bass. It was
incredible! I landed 183 fish in three
days all on the fly rod. My largest
was 7 pounds, 8-ounces, but I caught
many that topped 5-pounds. I used
9-foot, 20-pound fluorocarbon
leaders and a 9-weight rod. For flies
I used large poppers as well as large
olive or black leech patterns. All you
have to do is cast toward shoreline
structure, strip and hold on!"
In recent years, we've begun to gear
up for fly fishermen. We have certain
guides that have been trained to
accommodate fly-rodders and select
boats that have been made my
practical for long rods. And this
season we'll have some fly tackle
available in our lakeside pro shop,
including flies and lines.
Need more reason to book a fall
trip and bring along your fly gear?
We are again offering a special price
John Honroe
promotion that will cost two fly
fishermen just 1 1/2 the normal price
during the September 15th to
December prime period. In addition,
we are offering a $5,000 prize for the
fly fisherman that breaks the Lake El
Salto fly-rod record bass weighing
12 pounds, 4 ounces, and caught by
the late Gus Hansch.
And if your fly-rod brute tops the
existing lake-all-tackle record - 18
1/2 pounds - you stand to collect an
additional $5,000.

taking our customers to
a tremendous Mexican lake that
harbors some of the most
overlooked bass in the world. In fact,
we're withholding the name of this
mystery lake for the time being just
for the fun of it.
But here are a few hints that are
sure to get your blood boiling! This
55,000-acre lake situated deep in the
Sierra Madres near Culiacan was red
hot during the late 1980s and early
'90s, but fishing ceased in 1994 when
it was nearly drained by drought and
agricultural use. Fortunately,
hurricanes have replenished the big
lake in recent years. But it has largely
been forgotten since going nearly
dry. This older lake that has come

some of those Florida strain largemouth top10-pounds.
Anglers who have fished El Salto
will find major differences when they
get to this lake. For starters, you won’t
find the partially submerged trees
that El Salto has in such abundance.
What you will find is a lot of brush
and trees along the shoreline edges.
The open areas between these brush
clumps provide wondrous fishing
opportunities for anglers using
everything from top water baits to
plastic worms. This lake is unlike the
majority of Mexican lakes. There is
no snag filled murkiness to its waters.
Here you’ll be fishing a big and
beautiful lake that is deep and clear.
It has an abundance of large
boulders and rock formations. More
than 40 islands push up through its
surface.
We’ve had anglers tell us that this
lake is the best they’ve ever found
for fishing spinnerbaits. Others say
they’ve had super action fishing
crankbaits off the big lake’s many
ridges and points. Still others insist
they’ve never seen better topwater
action.
As we’ve already mentioned, if

The new Anglers Inn Lodge will be
constructed on the Humaya River.
The lodge will be only 5 minutes
away from the launch site near the
dam. Our riverside location provides
an opportunity for us to offer float
trips to guests who want to take
advantage of it. Those anglers who
do will have a half-day to fish for bass
as they drift down river through the
Sierra Madres. We’ll pick these
anglers up at the end of their float
trip and return them to the lodge.
Even the most dedicated bass
angler welcomes the opportunity to
take a break now and then. Our
guests will find that easy. They will

special facility on one of the many
islands you’ll find in this large lake.
Anglers who don’t want to run back
to the main lodge for lunch and a

lake and is easily accessible for those
who do their fishing farther away

Cast & Blast Returns!
Y
es, we're bringing it back
this season - our popular
Cast and Blast package!
That's exciting news for our
shooting customers who have
enjoyed our fabulous duck and dove
hunting in the past. This season, we'll
have access to some new, game-rich
hunting grounds thanks to our
relationship with a top-notch
shooting outfitter in Mazatlan.
Anglers Inn thoroughly endorses this
outfitter partner.
Groups of up to 12 shooters at a
time will stay at the beautifully
renovated, beachfront Holiday Inn in
the city and then be transported to
the hunting grounds located about
45 miles south of Mazatlan.
Everything will be first-class from
every aspect of the service to the
shotguns we provide (all new
Berettas and Benellis).
Holiday Inn SunSpree Resort
Check our website for information
on fishing/shooting packages, limits,
regulations, etc.
The hunting will take place from
October 15th to February 28th. The
limit is 20 birds (there is no points
system like in the U.S.). And you'll be
able to hunt nearly every species of
waterfowl.
You can tailor your own package.
Hunt in the morning and shoot dove
in the afternoon.
You decide!
