From the Principal Level Awards A Level 2 Morning Tea was held recently with a Level 1 supper held this week, on Tuesday, 9th April. These are wonderful occasions that allow us to acknowledge and celebrate students’ broad range of achievements that are required to receive these awards. Parents and friends enjoy this opportunity as much as we do and are always impressed by the Year Adviser’s citations. Jo Taylor, as the new Head Teacher Welfare has done a great deal of work to ensure these events run smoothly. I would like to congratulate all the recipients and thank Kellie Sedunary and Carissa Furze for their work as well as Deanna Fletcher, Kathryn Kane and the Hospitality students for providing the magnificent catering. Year 9 Laptops Year 9 received the latest version of the Lenovo laptops recently and they are the best yet with a large memory and improved speed. The DER program has been a ground breaking Federal government funded program which has changed the way we teach and students learn. Schools like ours would never have been able to afford the infrastructure and hardware that went with this innovative program and we are very thankful for the millions of dollars poured into it over the last 5 years. The saddest part about this is that the current Year 9’s will be the last cohort to receive a laptop as the program will no longer be funded by the Federal government. This seems both very short sighted and another example of inequality to me as the next generation of students will be at a distinct educational disadvantage and thus, there will be far reaching consequences. I would hope that either the federal or state government sees the worth of this program and decides to continue funding it. I would especially like to acknowledge the outstanding work of Guilan Thurling Head Teacher in charge of DER and Andrew McMillan Regional Technology Support Officer, who have ensured that our students and staff were seen as trailblazers in their utilisation of new technologies. I hope that everyone enjoys the upcoming holidays and comes back on Wednesday May 1 ready for another busy and interesting term. As always, please contact me if you have any concerns or issues. Please note the following important dates regarding holidays: Friday 12 April – last day of Term 1 Holidays 13 – 30 April. Students are invited to march in the Anzac Day Parade held during the holidays on Thursday 25 April. They must wear full uniform including Kia jackets. Term 2 begins for all students on Wednesday 1 May. Thursday 2 May – JFHS Athletics Carnival Thursday 9 May – Cross Country Anne-Marie Gill A MESSAGE TO FAMILIES - Deputy Principal Curriculum At the close of this term, it is timely to reflect on a number of events. I would like to reflect on some of the highlights of this term: The Shave for A Cure, which raised over $6500 and was truly a credit to our whole school. Our Vampire Shield Success, which has been recognised state and nationwide. The outstanding work of our leadership team at the Northern Spirit Leaders’ Breakfast. The JFHS Swimming Carnival, which was capably led by our colourful seniors. Our inductions – Prefect and SRC – which recognised the responsibilities of our leaders. Our Level 1 and 2 functions (absolutely one of the perks of my job). I also wish to acknowledge the relatively smooth transition of Year 7 students to our school. This time is one of stress and turbulence for some, and when there have been issues; students have been proactive and asked for help. The Year 7 teachers met this term, and reported back that there are some wonderful classes and some really positive learning going on. I hope that our Year 7 students are feeling the same way, and it is vital that we at the school get the opportunity to help with settling in to the high school environment. I also wish to highlight some innovations for this term: Our Parent Teacher night will be going online. The Schools Online Booking system will be used for making appointments. The first Parent Teacher night is on May 7th, and with the online system, parents can book their times in the holidays, at home, on their iPads, on their phones…I hope that this assists families in taking up the opportunity of teacher interviews. The SOBS site is easy to find – just google it, and you can load your email details in from there. Simple! The Small Schools Visit: The students from Mullengandra and Table Top Public Schools visited our high school, to get a taste of what high school life would be like. The kindergarten students dancing with our Rock Eisteddfod team was an absolute pleasure to watch and they gained a great deal from this visit. Our Prefect team are meeting regularly and working on a focus plan for their group. This is ably led by their Year Adviser, Kellie Sedunary, and they are doing a superb job in organising a legacy for the school. Our Personalised Learning Plans for Aboriginal students have been improved, and a better structure has been arrived at for ensuring that those meetings for our students occur. Jenny Brown and Anni Gifford have been pivotal in this process. A transition team has been formed, which comprises of teachers who have skills and strengths in supporting our students in their exit plans from school. This group currently supports over 120 students with specific needs in helping them reach their post school goals. There is always an attitude of improvement in our school. This is my sixth year at James Fallon, and I still feel like I did when I first arrived. I thought it was the honeymoon phase, enjoying my job so much, but this was not the case. It is just how this school is – it is a very positive environment for me and for many others. Jenny Parrett DEPUTY PRINCIPAL CURRICULUM A message from the Deputy Principal Administration A huge thank you to everyone; staff, students and families, for such a fantastic start to the year. As usual the big issues from the Deputy’s desk are uniform and attendance. So a reminder that next term we get into our winter uniforms and we need to make sure that over the holidays we do a ‘try on’ to ensure everything still fits. Uniform is a very important part of our school in that it gives us a sense of identity and belonging. We encourage our students to wear it with pride. Winter uniform is navy long pants or skirt, white shirts and maroon jumpers or Kea jackets for the juniors and navy pants, senior girls skirt, blue shirt and navy jumper or Kea jacket for the seniors. Please note that hoodies, no matter what the colour, are not acceptable school uniform. Attendance at school is crucial to a successful education for all our students. Being on time and having a regular attendance pattern reflect good organisation and a positive attitude to school. We recognise that there are times when a student will be late or unable to attend. For that reason we have a system in place to allow for this. If your child is late to school we ask that a note accompany them to explain this lateness. The same is requested if your child needs to miss any whole or part days of school. I would like to wish everyone a great holiday and I am looking forward to seeing happy and refreshed faces back next term. Jenny Brown (Relieving Deputy) Change of details - where are you @? Dear Families, If you change your contact details, would you please contact the school so you can continue to receive your school newsletter and other important school information regarding your child? Thank you. Please contact James Fallon High School on 60251688 or [email protected] **** P&C News **** Uniform Shop At present the Uniform the winter Shop is badly in need of girls dresses (all sizes) in good condition. In addition, uniform options are now in demand as the cooler weather is moving in. If anyone is able to help out with donations of any good quality, clean uniforms, please drop them into the canteen to Judi Gadd (our Uniform Shop guru) or Merelda. Enquiries can be made by phone on 6025 2077. Canteen A reminder that the 2013 Volunteer Roster is on the WEB, so if you are interested in volunteering at the Canteen on any days that are free, please contact Merelda on 6025 2077. The new Canteen Menu for Term 2 is finalised so look out for it on the WEB. The suggestion box in the Canteen is an important tool for Merelda to gauge your response to existing menu items and also to suggest new options to be considered. Please also keep in mind that the Canteen has guidelines to follow in respect to the type of food it provides, and cannot always take on board all suggestions received. P&C Meetings The P&C meet once a month during the term, with the dates appearing in the P&C section on the school website. Our meetings are short and friendly, so come and be involved in some of the issues relating to our school. Our next meeting is on Wednesday, attend! June 12 in the Staff Common Room at 7:30pm. All are welcome to ***** Please note that we will not be holding a meeting in May due to the close proximity of the holidays ***** HAVE A GREAT HOLIDAY BREAK!!! End of Term 1 and early Term 2 Calendar Year 12 mid-course reports distributed Friday 12th April Last day of Term 1 Friday 12th April Students return for first day of Term 2 Wednesday 1st May School Athletics Carnival Thursday 2nd May Student photographs taken Monday 6th May Year 11 & 12 Parent-Teacher evening Tuesday 7th May School Cross-Country Carnival Thursday 9th May Naplan Tests for Yr 7 and Yr 9 students Tuesday 14th May – Thursday 16th May Year 11 mid-course reports to parents Friday 31st May Cars - Dropping off and picking up your child at JFHS A very important reminder to all parents who drive their children to James Fallon High or pick them up after school. We have established separate entrances for all pedestrians, and this especially applies to students to ensure their safety arriving and leaving school each day. Unfortunately some parents are putting their own children at risk by dropping them off in car movement areas. The main carpark and driveways are used each morning and afternoon by delivery and service vehicles, special taxis transporting our special needs students, school visitors, disabled students, cyclists and staff vehicles. Stopping a car and picking up or dropping a child off in the school driveway or carpark areas is very dangerous for the child during school opening and closing times, and may also cause a car accident for which your car insurance may not cover you. We have requested many times that children are not dropped off or picked up in the car park or on driveways at the start or end of school. Once again we request, for the safety of our students and your own children, all parents to use the parking and crossing areas in Fallon and Glenly Streets and not to enter the school carpark/driveways to drop off or pick up students unless there are special health circumstances requiring this. Thank you for supporting student safety in our school. Please direct any special requests to our Principal. Anzac Day ceremony On Thursday morning, 11th April the school conducted its Anzac service in the hall. The centrepiece of the service this year was a video created by three students, Tuyet Phan, Tahlia Paterson and Ayesha Harris-Westman, all now in Year 10. Working with the guidance of Mr Skillington over several weeks in 2012, the three girls produced a video. It is the girls’ conception and representation of the significance of Anzac Day. Dear Carrie, Love Rupert involved historical research into music, clothing, names and conversational English of the time. It is set in 1915 and shows Carrie seated at home in Australia, silently reading a letter by lamplight from her sweetheart Rupert who is at Gallipoli fighting with the Australian Imperial Force. Carrie is played by Ayesha who sits in a darkened classroom in period dress. The letter was researched and written by Tuyet, Tahlia and Ayesha. Tahlia and Tuyet also researched archival footage, sound effects and stills to enhance the narrative. Rupert’s letter, originally voiced by Robert Anderson but due to technical issues, re-voiced by Mr Skillington, is read as the five different camera angles that have been stripped together in the editing process, move us around the seated Ayesha. The video is 8 and half minutes long and took around 14 hours to make, from conception to the final cut. Dear Carrie, Love Rupert was a very worthy and powerful centre around which the school’s 2013 Anzac service revolved. Dear Carrie, Love Rupert plays to students in the hall on Thursday, 11th April Anzac service Anzac service Zone Swimming Carnival 2013 On Wednesday February 20th Mr Finn and I were lucky enough to attend the Zone Swimming Carnival at the North Albury Swim Centre. Our team of nearly 50 swimmers proudly represented James Fallon High School with many students swimming in virtually every event they were able to. Those that attended behaved beautifully and swam their hearts out all day. As a result of their efforts we managed to finish third out of the 5 schools at the carnival with only a small margin separating us and second place getters Murray High School. This is a fantastic result. On top of this there were some remarkable individual performances with one of the highlights being Jai Smith named Age Champion for the 14 years boys. All swimmers who finished either first or second in their event will now progress to the Riverina Carnival in Leeton on March 11th. Into the light: Aidan McMillan and Jack Tanner Youth Ambassador Training Day – the Blood Service On Thursday, the 21st of March, Montana Dacey, Tori Stevenson, Jess Madew, Mrs Elder and I attended the 2013 Youth Ambassador Training Day held at the Commercial Club in Albury. Albury High, Murray High, Tallangatta Secondary College, Rutherglen High, Myrtleford High, Bright High School and James Fallon made up the seven schools present. The idea of the day was to become more aware about the Blood Service, how it operates, what it does and how the products are used, stored and distributed. Through the day we had two guest speakers, Glen Jarvis and Imogen Wallace. Glen spoke about a motorbike accident he sustained at the age of 17 when he was on a trip from his home in Wodonga to Northern Queensland. During this he lost 3 litres of blood, which is a lot considering the human body only holds around 5 litres. Glen now has a prosthetic leg, and as he progresses, is finding that he can do a lot of things that he didn’t think he could. Since the accident Glen has learnt a lot about the blood donation process, as well as the products from it, and has been Australia's fastest one legged cyclist for 11 years. Next was Imogen Wallace, a 17 year old girl from Tallangatta Secondary College. She spoke about her own cancer experience, and the role of blood throughout all it. At the age of 13 she was diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer in her leg, and received treatment in Melbourne. Imogen spoke about her treatment and recovery, as well as how important blood transfusions were to her; in total she received around 36 transfusions. Both speakers spoke about the importance of making the best of your life and how their individual health problems have made them so grateful and appreciate their lives so much more. The later part of the day consisted of group discussion and a brainstorming activity where we had to split up into groups made of kids from different schools, and answer several questions related to blood donating and then present it to the whole group. As a whole the day was great, and it’s great to be part of such a great organisation. Mason Bishop Year 11 Youth Ambassadors Training Day students Montana Dacey, Mason Bishop, Jess Madew and Tori Stevenson at the Training Day There will be blood…Vampire Shield Update With first term over we are a quarter of the way into the 2013 blood donation competition that will finish in November. As pictured below, Cathy Chapman recently attended our assembly and presented two of our Youth Ambassadors with the two trophies won by the wonderful James Fallon Donors last year. We again won the award for the highest number of donors and also convincingly won the award for the highest percentage of donors based on the total school population. Cathy commented on the fact that at a State level our school ranks one of the highest in this category, a fact of which we should be very proud. As the 2013 blood donation year lengthens, so too do a new bank of donors make their mark. We have already seen the first donations from our Year 10 cohort so thank you to Bree Poke and Ben Walther. As new Youth Ambassadors are about to be selected I would like to thank Genna Miles, Tiarna Spiteri, Georgia Hallows and Georgie Pearson for their great work over the last twelve months. Amanda Elder Blood Donor Coordinator A bloody triumph: Georgie Pearson, Cathy Chapman from the Blood Bank and Georgia Hallows Hammering the Nail On Friday, 5th April our Year 9 cohort ‘nailed Nail Can Hill’!!!!!! We started about 10 a.m. with everyone ready and raring to go, then the hike began. Hill number one was a killer with everyone challenged and puffing – the good news is everyone made it! The remaining 9 kilometre walk was easier as the track got flatter but about 7 kilometres into the hike, the downhill section greeted us and we had people tripping and stumbling as they laughed along the track. After another kilometre, we had two hills until the monument and we all smashed that out without a worry. At the monument we had lunch, a relaxing sit-together and a lovely group photo with Dean Street way down below us. After our break we started on the last leg down to the Albury pool. It was a calm and easy downhill stroll to the pool where we revived ourselves with a cool swim and a slippery rush down the water slide. What a fun way to finish our ‘Outdoor Recreation’ unit as part of the PDHPE curriculum. On behalf of year 9 I would like to thank Mr Stead, Mr Eckley, Mr Grace-Wenzel and Laura Skow for supervising and encouraging us to ‘Nail the Hill’. P.S.- year 8 – you should start training for it now Georgia Pontt Year 9 Cresting the first ridge Now, 6 k’s to the Monument… On track… Nailed it! Table tennis 2013 On Tuesday, April 9th the James Fallon High School table tennis team competed in an eastern Riverina knockout competition. Schools came from the local area as well as Batlow and Wagga. Our team was comprised of the more experienced dynamic duo, Hayden Scott (Yr 11) and D’lana Benton (Yr 7), the capable Lachlan Dacey (Yr 9) and newcomer Rhian Sklenar (Yr 11). Our team played three matches, one against each of the Murray High School teams. Our players worked hard all day and played with grit and determination but were unable to match the greater experience of their opposition. Our final match against Murray 3 was a nail biter coming down to the final match where unfortunately they just snuck past us. The grand final was played between Albury and Murray High Schools with the eventual winner being Murray High School. They now progress to the CHS championships to be held in Sydney in June. I would like to commend our players for their good sportsmanship, their behaviour and the clear commitment they made to the team. Mrs Amanda Elder Team Manager Anyone for…? – James Fallon’s team: Lachlan Dacey, Rhian Sklenar, D’lana Benton and Hayden Scott JIMMY’S BREAKFAST CLUB • Jimmy’s Breakfast Club opens between 8.15 and 8.45 each morning from the kitchen in Room 25. Students help with the preparation of breakfast and help with the cleanup at the end. • So come along and enjoy the company at JBC!!!! News from the PDHPE Department PDHPE to P&C: Thank you! The James Fallon PDHPE Department would like to thank the kind generosity of the P&C committee for their donation of $1000.00 towards resources for the benefit of all students that study PDHPE. With such a large monetary donation we have decided to use it to purchase CPR mannikins as they can be used across all stages of learning, providing a lifelong skill that all students should possess. Students Step Up We have so many generous students at James Fallon High School who are always willing to assist without hesitation. These students volunteer their time and skills to ensure feeder school carnivals run smoothly. These carnivals vary from school, to zone and Riverina levels and at each level our students represent our school with professionalism and pride. The PDHPE Department, along with the entire James Fallon High School staff, would like to thank and congratulate the following students for their tireless efforts: Thurgoona PS Athletics Helpers - Ben Spannari, Karlie Thomas-Bottrell, Jai Smith, Sara Lansdown, Areej Khan, Tessa Lucas, Caitlyn Mosinski, Abby Wegner, Abe Daly and Jacob Miller. Mrs Carissa Furze Head Teacher PDHPE NRL Thunder Cup 2013 Four weeks, twelve games, 480 minutes of game time and 58 players… These are a few of the stats that represent the level of commitment that our fantastic and skilful rugby league and league tag players dedicated to the sport they love in order to be a part of our local interschool Thunder Cup competition. The boys’ junior team were trained by Mr Mark Daly, the senior boys by Mr Geoff Wilson, the junior girls by Mrs Carissa Furze and the senior girls by Miss Billie Ciappara - training before school, at lunchtimes and after school. Well after the 3.30pm bell had rung and when most students were at home eating dinner and relaxing, these students were on the field – running, darting, hitting up the opposition and backing up their team mates – challenging their personal best efforts and putting their bodies on the line to represent themselves and their school…James Fallon High School. All students should be proud of their efforts as in each and every game we were competitive, our teamwork was exceptional and we had the drive to win…and in my eyes we were winners on all levels and I am proud of every student listed below. It is a huge organisational effort to ensure all students are able to participate in this competition each year, week in and week out, but after watching every game and seeing the enjoyment upon our kids’ faces, seeing them challenge their skills and achieve feats previously unable to be reached, it makes it all worthwhile. This year when the finals swung around we were once again named in the top two teams in the Junior girls league tag and Senior boys rugby league side…both teams coming up against Albury High. The girl’s game was a fast paced contest with an even level of competition in the first half – lots of diving tags, sliding defence and breaks through the line. The second half resulted in some extremely evasive attack by Albury High, allowing them to dart around our defence and cross the line a number of times, putting us of the back foot with five minutes to go. Our girls kept their fighting spirit alive and continued to challenge the opposition’s line, using some deceptive ball work to draw their player to create gaps, however the siren beat us to our destination and the final score for the game was Albury High 28 - James Fallon 8 (our tries scored by Rachael Burton and Molly Daly). The anticipation of the senior boys game – James Fallon Vs. Albury – lived up to the hype. What a fantastic game it was!!! All players stepped up to join together and throw their last efforts into the competition, for some the last opportunity they will get to play schoolboys rugby. This was the most enthralling game in this year’s competition rounds. Our boys took it to Albury High…with fast footwork, cover up tackles, hard hitting defence and a well drilled attack. With ten minutes of the game remaining the score was 0-0, five minutes remaining saw Albury High cross the line with conversion 6-0, within the last minute Dylan Hartin crossed the line but unfortunately we were unable to convert to force the game into extra-time. All boys, although disappointed on the siren, should feel extremely proud of their team and individual efforts over the course of the competition as they displayed honourable traits of fairness, honesty and respect for the game and their opposition. Congratulations to all players from all grades that represented James Fallon this year and a big thank you to our support crew consisting of many James Fallon students and staff (Miss Ciappara, Mr Stead, Mr Eckley, Mr Donnelly, Mrs Lockley, Mrs Elder, Mrs Sedunary, Miss Williams, Mrs Alvey, Mr Duffy, Mr H Taylor, Mr Kirkwood and Mrs Thurling) as well as our parents Mr Mark Daly and Mr Geoff Wilson who donate their time to coach our boys sides. Without you all we would not have such a smooth running competition…and without the awesome students listed below, there would be no teams to compete – well done! Gearing up to get them? It’s a fairly well known fact that young people are seriously over-represented in road safety statistics. But a much lesser known fact is that Learner drivers are actually the safest drivers on the road. It’s only when a novice driver ‘goes solo’ that their crash-risk sky rockets ... so much so that they are 2030 times more likely to be involved in a fatal or serious crash in the first 6 months on their Ps. To tackle this issue, keys2drive, the single largest national Learner driver safety program ever undertaken in Australia has commenced. keys2drive will see 200,000 lessons provided by specially trained, keys2drive accredited driving instructors for FREE. Developed by Australia’s motoring clubs and funded by the Federal Government, a keys2drive lesson brings together a professional driving instructor with the Learner and their supervising driver – most often mum or dad. In doing so, everyone benefits from a better understanding of how to work towards making sure the Learner driver becomes a safer P plate driver. If you already have your Ls or are planning to get them in the next 12 months, or if you are or will be supervising a Learner driver, you can find out more information and register for a FREE keys2drive lesson at www.keys2drive.com.au Albury Wodonga Sustainability Fair The JFHS Eco Club took to the streets for the Albury Wodonga Sustainability Fair in QEII square on Saturday the 16th March 2013. Courtney McKenna, Paris Rawaqa, Ellen Paterson, Alana Cameron, Lindsay Walther and Tahlia Paterson all gave up their time to spread the recycling message! The students, along with Ben Walther and Czarlene Villanueva, prepared for the event by sewing draft stoppers, collecting plastic bottles and spending a lunch time with ecologist Jill Dawson from “Our Native Garden” nursery. Their aim was to show how plastic drink bottles could be recycled; using them to replant seedlings and by making Easter egg baskets for children. The baskets were particularly popular with the younger children on the day! These students should be proud of the way they gave up their time to support a community initiative and to help create positive change.
