Mosaic Taster Day
Textile Block Printing Masterclass
During this workshop you will design, make and
apply a finished piece of mosaic using the direct
method of application. You will have a variety
of mosaic materials to use during the session
including glass, cut tile, mirror, pebbles, ceramic,
shell, found and recycled materials, and other
pieces of mixed media. Resources are included
in the workshop cost, but this might also be an
opportunity for you to bring along ‘treasured’
materials you’ve been saving for a special occasion?
Ursula is an artist who specialises in lino/block printing,
producing her own unique homeware and textile
ranges under the Little Axe label. This masterclass will
introduce you to the ancient, Indian technique of block
printing on to fabric to produce items such as a table
runner, cushion cover, bag or scarf.
Mosaic is a very ‘hands-on’ process, and creativity is
extended, together with a sense of achievement as
the process is ‘demystified’ and made accessible.

Painting Masterclass
with Adrian Wiszniewski
Alexander Moffat OBE RSA was Head of Painting and
Printmaking at Glasgow School of Art from 1992 until his
retirement in 2005.
As part of our regular programme of
exhibitions, artist Adrian Wiszniewski will be
resident at House for an Art Lover in our Studio
Pavilion. Inspired by time spent researching
landscape painting in New Zealand and
Scotland, Wiszniewski will create new work
in the studio inviting the public to enter into
discussions surrounding his practice.
In his masterclass students will be asked to explore various
approaches to the figure/portrait. The weekend course
should prove an exciting and stimulating experience with
special attention paid to each student’s work, providing a
platform for further creative development.
Sandy Moffat OBE, former Head of Painting and
Printmaking at GSA, is highly credited with encouraging the
revival of figurative painting at the school. He is a painter,
author, teacher and master of drawing and painting. A
Royal Scottish Academician and holder of an OBE, Sandy’s
works can be viewed in numerous galleries and public
space including The National Galleries of Scotland.
This painting masterclass, taught by
Wiszniewski, provides the opportunity to
produce your own work while creatively
explore the themes, style and techniques
employed by one of Scotland’s much loved artists. The masterclass also provides the
rare chance to view and discuss the artist’s work in progress. Join us for one weekend
masterclass, or both!
Sculpture with Doug Cocker
During July and August, artist Doug Cocker will be
exhibiting new sculptural work in our Studio Pavilion.
In support of this exhibition, Doug will deliver a
masterclass exploring themes and techniques present
in his work.
The masterclass will investigate how different
materials demand different languages. Participants
will make two individual sculptures derived from one
image. One sculpture will be linear and spatial, and the other emphasising texture and
surface. Each participant will create two separate translations of one source.
Doug Cocker is a contemporary sculptor based in Scotland whose work is often strongly
inspired by the natural and built landscape. His artworks explore craftsmanship and the
roles of sculpture in our modern society.
Cocker has lectured at Gray’s School of Art, Edinburgh University, Glasgow College and
Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art. He has built up an international reputation with his
work exhibited in both public and private collections in Britain and North America.
