If you want to discover the dazzling beauty of the Alps, you’ll
soon realise that the trip to Gornergrat is a “mustsee” excursion.
Its sunny viewing platform, accessible all year, makes the Gornergrat ridge a top destination, and not just because of its altitude. Surrounded by 29 peaks rising to above 4000 m and by
Switzerland’s greatest mountain and second biggest glacier in
the Alps, it offers a spectacular mountain panorama second to
none. And the “Matterhorn Railway” renders it so close you can
almost touch it. For more than 115 years the Gornergrat Bahn
has been making the ascent to the panoramic mountain a truly
unique and wonderful experience.

From Zermatt, the popular holiday resort in the Valais, Europe’s
highest open-air cogwheel railway departs daily every 24 minutes,
climbing to the Gornergrat 9339 km away. The train crosses impressive bridges, galleries and tunnels. In the midst of idyllic
forests and alpine meadows, past rocky gorges and tarns.
Accompanied by the majestic mountains, first and foremost by
the Matterhorn.

nine mountains higher than 4000 m surround you, glowing in
the light of the moon. Enjoy cheese fondue in the 3100 Kulmhotel Gornergrat and then ski down or take the train to Zermatt.
Your hosts at 3100 Kulmhotel Gornergrat will serve you an
exquisite dinner buffet including Fondue Chinoise. Perhaps you
will be lucky and the weather will allow you to have a spectacular view of the starry sky (with guide Peter Salzmann).

Gornergrat Gourmetticket
The Gourmetticket is a true experience for any nature lover
and culinary connoisseur. The Gornergrat railway rises to the
3100 Kulmhotel Gornergrat, where an Apéro riche, an aperitif
teamed with local Valaisan delicacies, awaits you. The train then
continues on to Rotenboden Station, where you’ll have an
opportunity to try out Switzerland’s highest toboggan run or
follow the snow shoe trail or hiking route back to Riffelberg.
Those who prefer a little less exertion can also return on the
Gornergrat railway. A 3-course gourmet lunch is being served
in the Hotel Riffelberg later. The Gornergrat railway takes you
on to the restaurant Alphitta (Chez Freddy) at Riffelalp for dessert and a special coffee made especially to your taste. Finally
the Gornergrat railway returns you to Zermatt.

Hiking
The Gornergrat Bahn provides access to a fantastic hiking area
around the Gornergrat. The natural paradise offers hikes to suit
everybody.
Hiking suggestions for groups
1. Riffelseeweg: Rotenboden – Riffelsee – Riffelberg

Audio climate trail to the Monte Rosa hut
The Gornergrat Bahn and myclimate present the Audio Climate
Trail. The audio tour leads from Zermatt to Rotenboden
(2815 m.a.s.l.) and to the Monte Rosa hut (2883 m.a.s.l.). During
the approx. three-hour hike, nine five-minute talks on climate
history take you into another time, another climate, another geography. We recommend the accompaniment of a mountain
guide for hikes on the Gorner glacier. The audio guides (G, E, F)
can be hired at Zermatt Tourism, the Alpin Center Zermatt or the
Gornergrat Bahn. Deposit required. More info at www.klimahoerpfad.ch. The audio guide is also recommended for a Gornergrat
excur­sion. You can listen to the contents during the trip, on the
sightseeing platform or at a quiet spot along the route.
Biking
In the midst of 29 four-thousand-metre peaks there are four
marked bike routes at your disposal. Enjoy travelling on board
the highest outdoor cogwheel railway in Europe up the
Gornergrat (3089 m). Riders can load their bikes on the train and
travel with them.
