Why Baluns?
When network equipment and teminals are equipped with different type of cable and connectors. It makes the direct
connection a problem. For example, using cable like coaxial, twinaxial, STP or UTP is not possible to terminate to different
connectors like BNC, Twinaxial, or RJ45. Balun (Balanced-unbalanced) is created to match different cableimpedance and
connectors. A good Balun should be able to match the cabling system's impedance and attenuation, and minimize signal
distortion.
Types of Baluns:
1. Balun: To connect balanced transmisson lines (such as UTP cable) with unbalanced transmission lines (such as coaxial
cable). Inside the Balun is a transformer which can be used to step up or down both the AC voltage and the AC current,
and it provides a means of isolating electrical circuit. For example a Balun can match IBM STP cable (150 ohm balanced)
with a coaxial cable of IBM3270 terminals (93 ohm unbalanced).
2. Impedance Matching Device (IMD) Both lines are balanced, but different impedance . For example, IBM Cabling System (150
ohm balanced) needs to attach to a 10Base-T terminal (100 ohm balanced).
3. Adapter: Adapters do not contain transformers. They provide mechanical adaption and electrical contact between two types
of connects UTP with RJ45 modular connector (100 ohm balanced).

coax cabling. Especially useful in telecommunication
application for patching the distribution frame. Units meet
CCITT Recommendation G703 and are great for America

G703 baluns in T1/E1 Communication
systems
The T1 line is the most widely used switched digital
communication circuit used in America today. T1 are
used for connecting phone and computer networks
to public switched network infrastructures. Each T1 is
equivalent to 24 64Kbps communication channels. Each
Channel utilizes two 100Ω shielded twisted pairs; one
for transmit (TX) and one for receive (RX). Some T1
equipment uses two 75Ω coax connections for the TX
and RX channels. Baluns are used to bridge the gap
between 75Ω coax and 100Ω Twisted pair. An E1 Circuit
is the European equivalent of the American T1. The
Infrastructure use 120Ω shielded twisted pairs so 75/120
baluns would be used in European application.

G703 is the connection standard for E1 services
in Europe. This balun is similar to T1 or DDS
standards in the USA. This interface standard is
used throughout the world to specify the physical
and electrical characteristics, which enable the
interconnection of digital network components.
This balun converts 75Ω G703 transmit signals
to 120Ω signals for transmission over network, or
reception by a CPE. It also converts 120Ω G703
transmit signals to 75Ω signals.
