Drama! Comedy! Adventure! Our 14th season at J★Company, San Diego’s awards winning youth theatre, literally has something for everyone. I am thrilled to open my first J★Company season with one of my favorite musicals, OLIVER! Long before VCRs, DVRs and TIVO, I remember waiting with baited breath for the film of this delightful musical to come on TV once annually. For this young impressionable boy it was one of the highlights of the year. And now I wait with the same anticipation for the gorgeous overture to open this exciting season. We move from the streets of fictional London to the harsh reality of a small, cramped attic in Amsterdam where our next touching presentation takes place. Yours, Anne is a challenging, haunting musical piece taken straight from the emotionally driven true pages of The Diary of Anne Frank, generously sponsored by Sempra Energy. To round up our season join us in the wondrous fairy tale land of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast and the original musical The Story of Hansel and Gretel. This pair of extravaganzas is sure to please from overture to curtain call and all stops in between. In addition to all this we have put together an exciting array of interesting and original classes taught by a long list of some of the best teaching artists in Southern California. To learn more about us visit www.lfjcc.org/jcompany. With extravagant musicals, powerful dramas, exciting classes and some of the best young artists in California gracing the stage there will always be something new and surprising awaiting you at The J★Company. We’d love to keep you company all season long. So find your way to The “J.” Artfully yours, Joey Landwehr, Artistic Director Oliver! Music, Lyrics and Book by Lionel Hart October 19–29, 2006 Originally Produced for the Broadway stage by David Merrick and Donald Albery Directed by Joey Landwehr Find your way up… This is Charles Dickens’ touching and exciting tale of a young orphan boy who runs away from an orphanage and makes his way on the dark streets of London. He learns that You’ve Got to Pick a Pocket or Two and much more from his new found “friends.” All he asks is Where is Love? as he searches for a family and to find a way up out of the underbelly of London to a better life. This fantastic score with memorable tunes will send you out of the theatre with a smile on your face and a song in your heart. Yours, Anne Yours, Anne December 1–10, 2006 Yours, Anne Libretto by Enid Futterman Music by Michael Cohen Based on “Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl” and the play by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett December 1–10, 2006 Find your way… Directed by Joey Landwehr This renowned chronicle of two Jewish families secreted away in a cramped attic in Amsterdam during the Nazi occupation is now a haunting and powerful story set to music. While remaining faithful to its acclaimed source, with all of its suspense and humanity, the timeless story is enhanced by a most moving and lyrical score. Propelled by the undying faith of a young girl on tip-toe before life, Anne Frank’s heartbreaking and ultimately uplifting diary stirs our deepest emotion in the endurability of the human spirit to find its way out of impossible situations. Sponsored by Music by Alan Menken March 9–25, 2007 Lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice Book by Linda Woolverton Originally Directed by Robert Jess Roth Originally Produced by Disney Theatrical Productions Directed by Joey Landwehr Find your way through… A prince, a beast, a beautiful girl, an enchanted castle, a handsome egotistical bully and a crazy inventor father—and that is just act 1. This extravaganza of a retelling of a classic fairy tale is pure delight as you watch our heroin, Belle find her way through the gruff exterior of the magical beast to the true love that is inside both their hearts. This is most definitely a beautiful Tale as Old as Time. The Story of Hansel and Gretel Book by Vera Morris May 11–20, 2007 Music and Lyrics by Bill Francoeur Directed by Joey Landwehr Find your way home… Sent into the woods, Hansel and Gretel meet up with a number of familiar and peculiar characters: a fiery troll, an articulate owl, a forest sprite and two hobgoblins who are in the service of an evil (but very funny) witch. She locks poor Hansel in a cage and feeds him nothing but cake to fatten him up for dinner…her dinner! Everyone will cheer Gretel as she outwits the crone and sets free all the children who have been captured, and the two siblings find their way home. This original musical is dramatically brought to life from the frightening night spent in the woods to the well-known discovery of the candy cottage.
