NEWS FLASH

GARDENS LOOK BAD?
Doug Says...
Spring 2007 started out with early warm weather, then freezing (18 degrees) cold, lots of wind and now warmer temps. 2007 plant
success will frustrate even the most Advanced Gardener. With all the beauty Spring brings, we must learn to be patient with plants and
realize Spring 2007 may not be one of the prettiest. It will probably be late May to Mid-June before plants like Japanese Maples look
like that specimen in your garden. You can help mostly by accepting the plant burn and trim when new growth begins to fill in the
plant. Fertilizing can be done but don’t over do it. Roses, Boxwoods, other shrubs and trees up to 4 feet tall can be trimmed now!
Nature has done quite the trim job this Spring. Be patient and Nature’s plants will give you all the glory soon...and oxygen.
(Doug Zick, Owner of Zick’s Great Outdoors, is a Missouri University degreed Horticulturalist with 35 years of experience and 26 years in the same location.
He does not recall the Spring weather swings ever being this dramatic.)
SPRING IS BACK! ANNUAL S ARE HERE! THE TIME TO PLANT IS NOW!
Annual Flowers Offer
An Instant Visual Delight
Annual flowers are an important part of any landscape. They offer immediate impact, providing color and foliage in areas that need a visual boost, or they can act as a
transitional "weaver" in areas where perennials or shrubs are between blooming seasons. They can help get us out of the freezing weather doldrums.
Zick's Great Outdoors has an outstanding assortment of sun-loving and shade-tolerant annuals that can brighten up any spot in your landscape or garden. Chose from vivid
splashes of color or softer, calmer hues, check out our impressive selection of plants. You'll see many shades of your old favorites - Marigolds, Geraniums, Petunias and
Impatients - meet some new exciting plants, such as Swan River daisy, Augustifolia Zinnia, Lisianthus, Annual Daisies, Torenia and Cosmos. They are available in 6-packs, 4"
pots or flats. After June 1st, they will be offered in 1-gallon containers.
Also available is an exciting assortment of hanging baskets and tropical flower or foliage plants.
Let Zick's Great Outdoors color your garden with Annuals!

HOSTA: One of the best selections ever. Priced as low as $4.49 to $24.99 for
large mature ones.
HARDY FERNS: The deer will not eat them and they’re a great texture in
Shade Gardens.
ORNAMENTAL GRASSES: Add a great texture to any garden.
SHADE TREES: Best selection of small to large Maples, Oak, Ash and more.
TEXTURE: When determining your plant design, consider texture. Don’t mix
to many into an area without considerable thought.
COLOR: The impact of color can enhance any landscape area. Annuals will
give color all summer. Be sure not to spread your annuals too thin.
Consolidate flowers into several blocks to get more bang for your buck.
PLANNING: When planning a garden area, by a window area or a total home
landscape...REMEMBER: “ A picture paints a 1000 words.” Print pictures
from different outside angles or from inside the house. We can draw right
from your pictures.

LOOK
Before You Leaf
Spring fever can cause you to jump headlong into
landscaping projects without a clear sense of direction.
Pay attention to a few details
before throwing away money on "impulse planting".
EXPOSURE - It is imperative to know how much sun/shade and/or wind
each planting area gets. Take a look.
DRAINAGE - In the St. Louis area, you can count on it being either too
dry or too wet. Find out which you've got. Also check out where your
gutters empty.
SPACE - Measure before you start planning. It will save you time when
shopping and prevent over crowding in your beds.
TIME - Be honest about how much time you're willing to spend keeping
your garden looking great all year.
Investigating these factors
will provide a wealth of information when
we help you plant and develop garden areas
for YOUR HOME
