Good evening
and
... to our 59th
season of great
racing at Coventry
Stadium, which is
amazing when you
think about how
our sport has
survived
recessions,
massive rises in
fuel costs, the
green lobby, the
onslaught of H&S legislation and an ever
widening list of things you, the public, and
drivers can do on a Saturday night.
I mention this as not all in the garden is
gloomy; the long list of so called support
formulas have seen steady and sometimes
massive growth in terms of active drivers,
which is great for the future of oval racing but
it is no real surprise that it has been mirrored
by the slow decline in active drivers in BriSCA
F1. Why has to be the question followed by
what are we going to do to stop it? These
questions sound easy to answer from fans,
drivers and promoters points of view but the
common ground always seems to be to keep
it as close to what we have as possible. To
me this will result in more of the same and
more radical thinking is required to reduce the
build and running costs of the cars, to have a
wider appeal to get more drivers to licence
and to look closely at how we consolidate
what we have to make it stronger before
looking for new venues to race at.
We need new venues to bring new catchment
areas for drivers and fans, but the sport
needs to rebuild itself first otherwise any
gains will be losses somewhere else in the
system. The BriSCA Management Board, a
50:50 split of drivers and promoters, has
done a good job in bringing the drivers and
promoters together, but this needs to be
refocussed onto making the sport cheaper to
compete in, gain more sponsors, get wider
media coverage and get new customers in to
watch a form of racing that is easy to
understand. Each of those areas is really
difficult to tackle as vested interests, tradition
and reluctance to change will always stand in
welcome back ...
the way but, by opening up the debate, I am
sure we can make big steps in our 60th year.
I am upbeat about the future and the growth
in the other forms of racing gives me much to
be cheerful about, as it shows demand for
racing from which we must be able to grow
our current driver base. Much has been made
about my decision to run three formulas this
season rather than the traditional two. That
decision was taken June last year when we
put this year’s fixtures together and was
based upon a rather pessimistic view of the
economy and where I thought we might be in
terms of driver numbers. I think I was a little
too pessimistic as tonight’s car numbers are
on par with last year’s. However I could not
take that risk ten months ago. The Coventry
team will turn the cars round and you should
not see late finishes so nothing lost but plenty
gained.
The gain is in the form of exposing more
support formulas to racing in front of a large
crowd and, in many cases, to give those
drivers exposure to BriSCA F1 which could
help to grow our driver base. We have a
fantastic season of racing ahead with some
real highlights like the Harrison Dynasty
Tribute in May, The British in July, The
Coventry Masters in June and the big three
championships in November with our biggest
firework display ever. We see the return of our
sponsors in the form of Lucas, Teng Tools,
Mobile Cash Mate, The Veterans
Association and Buildbase who are
sponsoring this year’s British. Our Executive
Box numbers are up on last year and new
drivers who will be racing shale like Mick
Sworder will add the unknown to every race
they are in.
If you want to push the sport forwards for the
next 59 years then drop me a email or come
and have a chat as the feedback from paying
customers carries a lot of weight and
sometimes we all forget to ask. Enjoy
tonight’s racing and when you get home send
me your thoughts.

Obituary : Bev Greenhalf
It was with great sadness we heard news
of the death of Bev Greenhalf in January,
a man who had commentated at stock
car events here at Coventry for thirty
years.
Bev started commentating on BriSCA
Stock Car Racing in 1967 but it was not
until 1976 that the then Coventry promoter
Charles Ochiltree secured his services at
Brandon and a sister track in Leicester.
Welcoming Bev to Coventry, Ochiltree
wrote “We’ve had to part with
commentator Len Porter, but happily able
to accept a full season at both Coventry
and Leicester is Birmingham based Bev
Greenhalf. A competent, crystal-clear mike
handler, Bev is also a devout Stox
enthusiast with a great capacity for
chasing any opening for advancement of
the sport’s prestige and publicity ratings.
“We’re glad to have him join us and from
his roof top meeting home we know he will
keep us entertainingly posted with up to
date situations of both the stox scene and
circuit events.”
Bev is seated right above
During Bev’s tenure in the box at Coventry,
he commentated on no less than fourteen
of our BriSCA F1 World Final races, the
first being in 1977 which saw him achieve
an ambition as it was the first ever world
final he had voiced over.
Bev never lost his enthusiasm for the sport
despite many ups and downs and failing
health. It was indeed a privilege to know
him. He will be very much missed.
Another perfect copy from the Squire stable - this time Tony' Neal's (100) World Final Winner.
See these and more Heritage racers in action at our May Harrison Tribute Meeting.

Tonight’s Sponsors
The VSCA and Coventry
Stadium welcomes main
sponsor Ann Squire, her
family and friends to this, the
third running of the Roger Squire
Memorial meeting.
Roger was a very well-known figure around
the Stock Car scene with wife Ann. He was
Chairman of the Supporters Association
and father to a number of sons who took
part in both F1 and F2; and, of course,
grandson Dan 291 still races an F1.
Robert and Dan have produced a splendid
Coverage from
tonight’s meeting
can be viewed on
replica of the Dave Chisholm car which is
on display tonight and both were involved
with the Tony Neal replica, both World
winners here at Brandon.
The holder of the Roger Squire Trophy is
Dan Johnson (4) who has won it twice now
– will he get his hat-trick tonight!
Another sponsor is Mick Whitney of Nick
Whitney Engineering. BriSCA Heritage
driver 773 F2, Mick, together with three
friends is competing in the Banger Rally
from Lille (France) to Barcelona (Spain in a
1994 Jaguar XJ6. All cars must cost less
than £300, and they are hoping to raise
money for the Stoke Manderville Maternity
Ward in Buckinghamshire. Anyone who
would like to sponsor this adventure can
contact Mick on mobile 07843 63352 or
telephone 01844 290791.
Ann Squire met up with old friends, former F1
World Champion Tony Neal (ex 100) and his wife
Doreen during a recent visit to New Zealand. Tony
won the title here at Coventry in 1968

Much like many BriSCA F1 Stockcar drivers
and fans have waited five long months to
return to Coventry Stadium, so too have the
young guns in the ORCi Ministox who
completed a highly successful first season of
racing at the shaleway last November with
the maiden staging of the Coventry Masters
which concluded the 2011 track
championship.
On that chilly, but thankfully dry, November
evening it was 121 Marcus Skeels who
emerged the victory in a highly competitive
Coventry Masters Championship, holding off
pole starter and many people’s pre race
favourite 355 Sid Magewick for the honours
while 212 Ben Bate enjoyed a storming drive
up to third place.
Magewick enjoyed some consolation, picking
up some points in the final few races to
secure the track championship title while the
remaining heat races were shared between
128 Craig Banwell, 229 Katie Cooper and 273
Jack O’Reilly, the latter pair being first time
winners.
However for O’Reilly the victory did not come
in the best of circumstances as the race was
stopped to attend Cooper who had taken a
hefty whack and the race was declared after
just six laps.
After the situation with Cooper looking
somewhat serious at first it was good to hear
she was making quick progress and was
soon back in action, with more than a little
help from the F1 fraternity, and she and
O’Reilly are back again this evening to try and
continue their high form from five months
ago.
Of the other front runners in the 2011 points
at Coventry who are among tonight’s
expected entry double race winner 12
months ago 225 Joe Parsons and Kent
Champion 382 Tom Foster finished in the top
10 and would love nothing more than to work
up the latter this season.
Foster was in fact the final winner at
Mildenhall last weekend which bodes well for
him here while heat and final winner at
Mildenhall on March 10, 344 Ross Fisher is in
his best form to date and should be a strong
contender here along with 198 Brandon
Osbourn who has also been flying on the
Suffolk shaleway in March.

Teng Tools – why do we do it?
When you are asked to write something for
the programme – first of all you feel really
good about being asked but then reality
dawns. What on earth do you write about
that might be interesting to you, the reader.
I am no expert on Formula 1 history and
have no technical knowledge but then that
would be boring anyway. I have been lucky
enough to do a couple of sponsors’ races,
which was a real privilege but hardly
qualifies me to talk about racing tactics.
What I do know about is Teng Tools and
what we do to support Formula 1. So here
goes.
Teng Tools have been involved with
Formula 1 stock cars for some 10 years
now and I am often asked two questions –
where does that logo come from and why
do you do so much motor sport
sponsorship.
Good questions and I will try and answer
them.
Teng was a Japanese god who is
represented in traditional Japanese theatre
as the God of Power and wears a red mask
with a big nose. According to legend he
taught Shogun how to be a Samurai
warrior. The original Teng Tools logo was
the full mask but we were often criticised
for having a logo that was aggressive
looking and a bit too oriental.

When new Labour was launched the
Conservatives launched an advertising
campaign called new Labour, new danger
with Tony Blair’s eyes appearing a in a strip
across the page. This immediately gave us
the idea of doing the same with the Teng
theatre mask and the Teng eyes logo was
born. Today that logo is one of the best
recognised logos in the tool industry right
across the 40 plus countries around the
world where Teng Tools is sold.
We think that our logo is seen as a quality
brand perhaps with a bit of character, the
motor sport sponsorship has played a
huge part in doing that but having that
eyes logo has made it much easier to get
the brand recognised – it is a very
distinctive and eye catching logo that
people seem to like.
So why do we do so much sponsorship?
For many years we advertised in all the
trade and car or bike magazines and had
some success in building a brand name
but it was missing something. It was also
costing a lot of money to do something
that we did not feel was really working well.
Being a tool company we were always
getting letters and phone calls asking for
sponsorship but had always said no or
maybe offered a little bit of discount.
Then, in the late nineties, I decided to
change tack and instead of advertising in
the magazines we put aside a lump of
money to supply tools to motor racing
teams. One of the first to contact us was
Frankie Wainman Junior. Around the same
time we started to sponsor Coventry Bees
speedway team and I mentioned to Martin
Ochiltree that I had often come to Brandon
as a kid to watch the stock cars. One thing
led to another and as well as sponsoring
FWJ we were sponsoring Neil Scothern
and all the F1 meetings at Coventry with
tool vouchers for all the race winners.
Today you should see the silver Teng Tools
sticker on every Formula 1 car, without it
the drivers do not qualify for the vouchers
which they almost all want to win so that
they can build up their tool kits.
Most of the top drivers who we sponsor
have the logo sign written on to the car.
Many other drivers also have the logo sign
written rather than using the stickers - I
appreciate that very much and will try to
repay that support by continuing to
sponsor a sport that I really enjoy
watching.
It is not purely commercial decision at the
end of the day – like you I enjoy watching
the drivers do what they do so well, I am
just lucky in that I can put something back
in to the sport.
