Day of Decency has come and' gone. It has been months since a couple of heads got together on the 3rd floor of gateway commons and decided
what part they would play in a battle for what they thought was right. And nearly a month (perhaps two as you read this) since the dreams and
the plan came together. OUtcome? Well. for one, I'm not really sure.
I'd really like to think that maybe some part of Meye opening" or Mreactionary seDiment" ocurred on account of someone standing up and screaming
MMy rights as a citizen are in danger." Jlut how can something like that be measured? To tell you the truth, I don't know, either. I wish I had
played my part out.
Minde~ency", "profanity", and "obcenity" from public radio stations 24 hours a day is being appealed. we must watch, not
wait, and act. How? You can call 866-6868 and find out. Anyone of the folks on staff has' access to the information. any day of the week, at
any time. Provided, of course, there is someone here (ahem!). We can give you names and addre~ses. fax and phone numb,..rs of organizations
and individuals who need the assistance of people like yourself, or in some cases, would, and do, defy ~our opposition.
AJJ the decision to ban
AJJ someone who values creativity and its limitless bounds, and wonders at the different kinds of reactions it provi-ies. from rage to confusion
to recognition, it Is important for me to posess the ability to think freely. It is no secret that that is what is at stake. Hats off tto the cats at
Rhino for the information at the Real Music Revue. Please make them, and us, proud. Register to Vote. Vloce your opinion. Now. Anything
I haven't Covered, please discover for yourself. KUCI ezist& to educate as well as to entertain. It's been that way for Ii long time, longer than I've

Well here it is. Some of you might not know this,.but It was my first
time as program guide editor. i had sort of a tough act to follow, but
At least I know this has all the neccesary ingredients present. i did
work hard, i don't care what any of you say, right now I am half in the
new u and half here (KUCI). I tried to get all or most of the bands you
all put down, and tried to copy the show ds down accurately, since this
is what it's all about. /iUlyway. Jennifer Vineyard has been very
pleasant and you all must thank her. So has Joachim but i think he
is more used to being up late. i refuse to take resposibility for
anything i am writing now as i am in a delerium and it is 4:30 am. I
hope it works for you.

YOI A note on rap at KUCI.
. .." . , / KUCI programs harcore rap and hip hop. Whack new jack swing and sucka MC rhymes get the finga . While most DJ's mu in with rock and roll, the true hype can be found 7-9 pm Tuesdays &: Thursdays and 6-8 pm Saturdays. With the recent demise of the Pioneering KDAYam, we remain the last voice of hlp hop in Orange County. Cuts you are now hearing on those poser top 40 stations are old news at KUCI. We play the largest shit on wax and we do it first. Dope Jams are in effect and requests are strictly Dan Stuckey! 6,000

Rap/lDp Hop Music Coordinator
The Jazz Department in KUCI focuses on giving our audience the best and most diverse variety ofjazz. We not only air songs from artists
such as Hiroshima or Kronos, but also early jazz greats such as Beaie Smith. Duke Ellington, and Thelonloua Monk. By giving our audience a
diverse exposure to jazz, they are better able to learn about different types of jazz such as Fusion, Contemporary, and Early American Jazz. For
In depth information on jazz, we have MSoundings" , which airs from 10 am to 12 pm on Fridays. "Soundings" is hosted by Bradford J. Stein and
is a two hour interview with various jazz artists and groups on their personal philosophies and views on jazz. When "Soundings" first aired as
an addition to the UUltimate Jazz Experience", on January 12, 1989, it was a mixture of music and interviews with the artists. On September
28, 1989, the show received its own program in the 10 am to 12 pm slot so it could focus exclusively on the artist interviews. "Soundings"
alternates every week from live.in-atudio interviews to prerecorded interviews. The purpose of MSoundingS" is to expose people who are interested
in jazz music but don't know too much about it, so they could learn through the artists and their music. For those Wt,O do know about jazz or
who want to get into the music business, its a chance for them to listen to their favorite artist and get an Idea about what It takes to be a successful
musician.
The Jazz Department has been busy establishing connections with record companies. artists, and helping with promotions for jazz
concerts and festivals. Among the concerts we helped promote is the Fourth Annual John Coltrane Festival, The Pacl11c Jazz Festival, Concord
Jazz Festival, and pas Playboy Jazz Festivals. During our shows we announce concerts that are going on around the Orange County. Los Angeles.
Hollywood areas, including ticket and album. giveaways.
The Jazz Department here at KUCI has changed throughout the years. We have gone from fifteen to over twenty hours ofjazz programming,
which includes NewAge, Blues. and Folk music. We are also switching over from vinyl to CD for better listening quality. Through this improvement,
we not only get a larger audience but more people are getting an idea about what jazz is all about.

Throwini Muses: Throwm, Deep Thouihts?
Well, throwing crazy ones anyway. .Kristin Heish, the lead vocalist and beauty of the throwing muses (and the Breeders), has a UDique ability to
write abstract yet tangible lyrics. These philosophical and quirky words are gracefully drawn over their frenzied raW bUZ% melodies. Sure this
band used to be on 4AD, but with a label switch to sire nothing has been lost, only large, well deserved recognition has been gained. Throwing
Muses are rcacing the peak of their career with their fourth full albums, offering solid music with their distinctive off- beat guitar energy. Do
yourself a favor, find this, listen to it for 'your health. Who can pass up Throwing Muses like UTwo step behind the rest, one f'mgerUp too long.

Jello Biaira Be NoMeansNo: Erect Funk With A Bite
Mr . Biafra seems at home in a lot of different situations. His distinctive wally voice can be heard all by itself, Instructing listeners to uburn your
draft cards, burn the flag and burn the pentagon, too...". He shows up with Alain Jorgensen and his sample happy industrial type crew in Lard,
and, of course, in the surf guitar punk band the Dead Kennedys. His most recent project involves label mates NoMeansNo, a hard upbeat funky
sounding band. True, for the most part, Jello's vocals sound like they might have been taken off of some old DK albums, but they do go well with
throbbing bass as well as the feedbacky guitar screetches. This album came in a time when MeHrs. Hussein And Bush were in a penis battle, and
it offered a little light entertainment. If you were tired of worrying about the war, JB'slyrics give you something else to worry about. UChew"
describes life in the big city and its little problems. If you want to hear Mr. Biaira go off about the gulf war, check ou~ Die for on. Sucker.

Superchunk Superchunk are: Mac (guitar, vocals), Jim (guitar, backing vocals), Laura (bass) and Ch!.lCk (drums). I had a chat
with Mac after their show with Sonic Youth at the Whiskey a-go-go, AprU 4,1991. Thanks to John for helping
me out during the interview.
Lila: Introduce yourself?
Mac: I'm the lead singer we're from Chapel hill, a college town in North Carolina.
Lila: Alright let's get some background, how did you get together with Matador records?
Mac: I knew Gerard from seeing him at shows in N.Y, I went to school there. I'd always give him tapes of stuff
we recorded on Merge records. About 4 years ago I gave him a tape of this old band I used to be in called
the Slush Puppies.
Lila: Did the Slush Puppies ever release anything?
Mac: We had a cassette and a double seven inch, and we're also on a box set with five other local bands like
Wwax. So anyways Gerard decided to put something out on Homestead records. It was supposed to be
a four LP deal with The Bricks, Wwax, us and a Merge record compilation. But then he left Homestead,
so we were in limbo, but Gerar~ played the tape for Chris Lombardi, who was just starting out Matador
records. At that point Chris already had pl~s to put out the Dust Devils and Teenage Fanc1ub. He liked
the tape. Gerard ended up joining Matador as a partner. So that's how it happened, it was just a one
LP deal butwe're definitely putting out another single with them, it's called "Breadman". We put out
the "Fishin'" single with Merge records cuz we have a deal with Matador so that we can put our singles
out on any label, but we do our albums with them. We have'a new record coming cut in a couple of months
we $eady signed a cont·r act. The new 7" has a picture of me in same pose as the Boss Hog album it's
just a joke. I'm not naked, I'm wearing boxers, I hope people get it otherwise It looks lame.
Lila: Is this your first time out in California?
Mac: Yeah, we've never been this far west, the furthest we've been before thi!{was Chicago, that was last
August with Seaweed. We've toured the east coast and northeast coast extensively. We came up from
Texas, where we played with Firehose. That was fun, I never really liked Firehose, but they were really
nice guys.
Lila: Were the other band members in bands before?
Mac: Yeah, Jim was in a band called Humidifier from Connetticut, they're great, they have a 7" and an LP
out on Lubricated records. Laura wasn't in any-band but she did play on the first Merge compilation.
Chuck used to be in Zen Frisbee, they used to playa lot ~ound Chapel hill. They have a 7". coming out.
John: I always thought you guys were from N.Y?
.
Mac: A lot of people think we are since we've played there so many times, kinda overkilled there. We play
there cuz Matador is there and they get us really good ~hows, also it's a lot of fun. It's only ten hours
away and then we usually stop in D.e.
John: How did you end up opening up for Sonic Youth?
Mac: Well, we w:ere actually suppose to play with Seaweed but that fell through. Bob Laughton books our shows
and he also books for Sonic Youth. We were really stressed on getting here on time cuz are van has been
breaking down. They're one of our favorite bands.
Lila: So how do you think the tour is goin'?
Mac: It's been great, I think Texas might have been hell tfwe hadn't opened up for a bigger band. People have
been really nice to us about letting us stay m their houses.
John: What·do you think of the Whiskey? and L.A?
Mac: I think it's pretty gross, the people who work there are rbally stressed, no free beer. I've been here before,
i dont really like it, It's really neat to look at, the bulldings and all. Things are so fuckin' expensive
compared to Texas and Arizona.
.
Lila: No plans to move to another label?
Mac: No we're pretty happy with Matador, Gerard has a good reputation and they're one ofthe best indie labels.
Teenage Fanclub are probably goin' to sign. We played with them at CBGB's, when they came to N.Y.
That was probably our best shows, -we didn't play until 1:30 a.m, it was fun.
Lila: Plan on .going to Europe?
Mac: Maybe in the fall after the new record. Right now there's too many bands over there. West Germans
have a lot of money. we should play over there. I heard you lose money the first time you play in U.K.
Lila: What's it like in Chapel hill?
Mac: It's a real college town University of North Carolina is there. and Duke is about ten minutes away.
Lna: What did you study in New york?
.
Mac: I went to Columbia. I studied history. We're all out of college, I met Jim through mutual friends at
Columbia. Laura and Chuck are from Chapel Hill. Things are goin much better than we expected.
