Rimsky-Korsakov: Scheherazade
Bruckner’s epic Symphony No. 4 evokes ancient castles, hunting
horns, snow-capped mountains and misty forests. It is one of the
great romantic works for orchestra—majestic and transcendent.
The music of Donovan Seidle opens the program, and Bruch’s
famous violin concerto will be played by the fiery and expressive
violinist Elena Urioste, making her KWS debut.
Three Russian masterpieces are combined to create a
program bursting with musical colour, virtuosity and
fantasy. Tchaikovsky’s rarely heard music to The Tempest
opens the program (a favourite of Edwin’s); Alon Goldstein
makes his KWS debut in Prokofiev’s fiendishly challenging
Piano Concerto No. 3; and Scheherazade takes us on a
magical journey of sound, storytelling and imagination.

Jessie Brooks. From unaccompanied hunting
horns to Handel’s call and response concerto
and Telemann’s exciting but rarely heard Alster
Echo for horn quartet, these works showcase
the amazing talents of the KWS horn section.

Friedrich II of Prussia (1712-86) was not only
King, but also a flute player and composer. The
musical establishment of his court, particularly
at his summer home at Sanssouci Palace, featured
prominent composers C.P.E Bach, Quantz and
Benda, and was for a time a centre of German
musical life. This concert, curated by KWS bassist
Bruce McGillivray, brings together works by
composers of this “musical household,” and features
the talents of KWS musicians Thomas Kay, John
Helmers and concertmaster Bénédicte Lauzière.

Join us for an evening of musical exploration into
the genre of classical music as it has transformed
and evolved over time, curated by KWS bassoonist
Michael Macaulay. A genre is a living thing and,
once in a while, a radical development emerges
that both changes the future of music and pays
homage to the work of generations past. Join the
KWS and featured Orchestra soloists to trace the
evolution of the classical symphony; a story told
through the music of the composers who laid its
foundation, as well as those who refined it.

Violet’s Story
“When Don served as President
of the Symphony Association
and I was Chair of the Women’s
Committee, at the same time,
our three teenaged children
complained that dinner
conversations were always
about the Symphony. They
were right!
At that time the Symphony
was celebrating 25 years,
Raffi Armenian was appointed
Music Director in 1971, and the
orchestra went from amateur
to professional status with the
hiring of many gifted musicians,
some of whom are still bringing
audiences pleasure. These
were exciting years.
I’m happy to have been a part
of the development of the
KW Symphony for more than
50 years.
My life and the lives of those
in this community have been
enhanced because of the live
performances that the KWS
brings to us.”
