S o u t h e r n C a l i f o r n i a Ju r i s d i c t i o n June 2009 T HE P RECEPTOR SCJ M A S T E R C O U N C I L O R TABLE OF CONTENTS My Brothers of SCJ, SCJ MC 1 SCJ DMC 1 League Articles 2/3 League Articles Calendar 4 4/5 I have been so glad to see such a high participation at all of the installations and events these past few months. It is a true example of the Brotherhood we share and we all appreciate it. As the holidays approach, and 2009 comes to an end, we still have much to look forward to in December, and also in January! The SCJ Holiday Dance will be on December 4th at the DeMolay Center from 7:30pm to 11:30pm. The cost is $5 and the dress is casual. Now, although the dress is casual, it is still a DeMolay event, so keep it appropriate. Please invite your local Bethels and Assemblies as well! In January, we will be having SCJ Bowling with registration at 11:30pm on January 2nd, and the tournament starting at 12am on January 3rd. It will take place at Brunswick Bowl in Norco and cost is $25 per bowler and $10 per non-bowler. For those of you who wish to show off your ritual skills, we will be having SCJ Ritual Competition on January 30th, so start preparing now! SCJ CS 6 Last thing is Membership. We are SO CLOSE to Positive Growth! We are a mere 14 members away! All chapters have been doing amazing this year bringing in new members and I think we can really show DeMolay International just how much impact Southern California can make by bringing in members. So keep it up and let's finish up 2009 strong! SCJ Sweetheart 6 I look forward to seeing everyone at the upcoming events and I hope everyone enjoys the Holidays with their families! I hope everyone has had a great Thanksgiving vacation. For those of you who were not at SCJ Football, we currently have our new Brotherhood Programs printed out. Looking at the new books you will find some new changes; for example, you can now get points for Installation work. For all of you who are wondering, we will be allowing DeMolays to receive points for events prior to SCJ Football with signature from an advisor; however for every event after football, the rules will be the same as last year. You must get the book signed at the event in order to get credit for the event. I cannot stress how important it is to keep your Brotherhood Programs at hand and remember to bring them to all your events so you can get credit and win prizes. If you do not have a book, you can come see any of the officers and we will get you one. As I have said before, we must show the world which Jurisdiction is the best; it is time to put SCJ back on top. As Max has stressed over and over again, we are very close to achieving positive growth this year. And there is no reason why we cannot surpass that goal. With installation season coming to an end, I encourage all of you to continue to be active in your Leagues and this Jurisdiction. I hope to see you, your members, and prospects around this Jurisdiction in the days to come. Also, I hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday season. If you guys have any questions, concerns, or would simply like to talk, please do not hesitate to come up and talk to me at any time. Sincerely, Tyler Davies SCJ DMC Page 2 June 2009 League Discussion Diamond League What’s up SCJ?! These last couple months have been really cool. I’m seeing a lot of new faces in my travels around the Jurisdiction. Diamond League recently held our miniature golf tournament; top golfers were DL Sweetheart Clara Flores, me and Dads Roten and Caster. I'd like to take the time to come out and support Diamond Mini Golf. We had a great turn out and a lot of fun. Liberal Arts had their installation and also competed in the SCJ football tournament. I’m proud to say Liberal Arts took co-champs in the tournament and should be finishing the championship sometime soon. South Bay Chapter will be holding their installation on January 16, 2010, so save that date on your calendars. One big event I want to push is the Diamond League Snow Trip. It will take place the weekend of January 22~24, 2010. Tickets will available first to members within the League and later will be available to other members of the Jurisdiction, if any are still available. More information will be released in the future. We are still pushing our Toys for Tots drive and hope to receive a little more help before the drive is over. Also, if you heard about Dad Caster and his recent stroke, he is doing just fine. Max is doing a really good job pushing membership and I want to add my two cents. Everyone should realize what DeMolay has done for you and share that by initiating a member so the new member can enjoy the same experience that you have enjoyed. Thank you for taking the time out of your busy day to stay updated with Diamond League. And remember, some relationships come to an end...but Diamonds are Forever. Walter Pijeaux Diamond League President Highland League Highland League is doing very well so far; our membership is growing and we have some good events planned for the near future. Our latest event was a League meeting on November 7th at Scandia amusement park in Victorville. All who attended had a great time playing mini-golf and bumper boats to the, always popular, go-karts. After Scandia, the League met up at a nearby Sonics for some grub. In between events, there has been a good deal of visiting between the Chapters at their meetings. Highland League is also proud to say that one of our chapters, Foothill, participated in Jurisdiction Football and our Chapters are looking forward to competing in Jurisdiction Bowling in January. The month of December is gearing up to be a fun one for Highland League. Two joint events between Highland and Sonora, League ritual competition and a chili cook-off, are soon approaching. Our first fundraiser, the Winter Car Wash, will take place in Upland on December 12th; our League officers are still selling tickets for that event. Furthermore, we have a Highland bowling competition and our next League meeting will be at Foothill Chapter on December 21st. Lastly, Highland League is still selling Highland shirts of all sizes for $10 per shirt. With successful meetings and events under our belt, we push forward to a bright future here in Highland League. Highland President, Garrett Lacroix T he P r e c e p t o r Page 3 As we move closer to the end of the 2009 calendar year, we are also coming closer and closer to our SCJ goal of positive growth. Starting off the 2010 year knowing we reached positive growth in 2009 would be a great start for the year. All we need to reach our goal of positive growth is that little extra push, which I know each member of SCJ has inside of them. Newport Chapter is starting up, with an initiation on December 10, and, even though Newport Chapter won’t be in Paradise League, it is always great to see new Chapters forming and bringing in more members. As for Paradise League, this year is running great. We have had quite a few successful fundraising events already, which is a great way to see the League starting out. We have our ritual competition coming up as well as dodge ball with Titan League on December 12, and a Christmas party with Diamond League on December 18; which will be a blast. It’s great to see leagues working together to put on events as this cooperation shows the brotherhood between us all. I hope to see everyone at the upcoming events, and remember, things are always better in Paradise. Paradise League Chris Hannum Paradise League President Hey SCJ!!! RCL is off to a great start! Already had two very successful installations and some successful events. I would like to congratulate Kimball chapter who won the first ever RCL Football tournament. Also I would like to give praise to Agate chapter who went up to compete in SCJ Football. RCL has some events coming up our ritual competition and our annual bonfire will be on December 4th. ritual competition will be at Spreckles lodge registration will be at 8:30 and the bonfire will be at La Jolla shores following the completion of ritual comp. I encourage everyone to come down and support our ritualists! For more information on these events contact our league advisors or or myself or you can look at our new website www.royalcoast.shutterfly.com. Royal Coast League Fraternally, Stephen Gillard Sonora League Hello Southern California Jurisdiction DeMolay buddies! I hope everyone is having a great and smooth transition thus far in your Leagues! I want to throw a shout out to the Shriners for putting on a wonderful dance and also to everyone who has supported Sonora League. Real quickly, I want to let everyone know about a few upcoming events in Sonora League. First of all, Sunday, December 6th will be the Sonora League/Highland League joint Ritual Competition at the San Bernardino Scottish Rite. Registration will start at 9 am and continue until the competition is finished. Please make sure to register if you have not already done so. On December 8th at 7 pm, Moreno Valley will be holding a Past Master Councilor’s Night where many PMCs from around the Southern California Jurisdiction will be performing opening, closing, Flower Talk, Father Talk, Shield Talk, and many more ceremonies. Please try to make it out because it is going to be a good time. Another upcoming event takes place on December 20th when Sonora League and Highland will be having their joint annual Chili cookoff- at the San Bernardino Scottish Rite and the time is TBA so please stay tuned for that information. Remember the SCJ Holiday Dance will be on December 4th at 7:00 pm the DeMolay Center in Anaheim. This will be an awesome event so I hope to see everyone there! Thank you everyone for the support and let’s continue to try to make SCJ the best Jurisdiction in the nation! Justin Moore, Page 4 June 2009 HOW’S IT GOING SCJ?!?! Titan League I bring greetings and salutations from all of your brethren from Titan League. I know installation season is mostly over now, so I want to congratulate all the Chapters and I hope each Chapter’s new officers have an awesome next six months. I would like to also remind everybody to go to local Job's and Rainbow Installations when those events occur. Those organizations support us by coming to our dances and events and I think we should return the favor. Always remember that the more time, effort, and hard work you put in to DeMolay, the more fun you WILL have in DeMolay. I would also like to say congrats to the finalists of the SCJ football tournament. I know it’s going to be a good game between Centennial and Liberal Arts. On the note of sports, Titan League Bowling is coming up on December 5th at 11:30 pm at Linbrook Lanes in Anaheim. The following Saturday, December 12th, is Titan & Paradise's joint ritual competition, and, after lunch, Paradise and Titan are holding an indoor dodge ball tournament - just for fun. We are going to have dodge ball inside the lodge room but precautions are being taken to make sure nothing is broken. It will be a blast for sure so come on down and have a blast with us. Yorba Linda will host a New Year’s Eve Lock-In on December 31st, starting at 10:00 pm and ending at 6:00 am on January 1st. Titan League is having a fundraiser on the January 2nd; it’s a movie dinner. We will be watching National Treasure. Cost is $5 per advance purchase ticket or $6.50 at the door. I would also like to remind you about Relay 4 Life. I encourage every Chapter to get involved with the project and remember it’s your duty as a DeMolay to help out your communities. So that’s all the information I have for you guys about what’s coming up in Titan League. Last but not least, I hope that everybody had a WONDERFUL Thanksgiving celebration filled with happiness and memories. Sincerely, your brother, friend, and comrade Christopher H. We have made the brotherhood books and are now implementing the brotherhood program. So I suggest you all go travel and help out your brothers so you can rack up some major brotherhood points. Also this month of December we are starting off with a bang. We have on December 4th our annual Holiday dance which is one of the best events the jurisdiction puts on. I recommend that you invite your nearest Bethels and Assemblies if you really want to have a great time at the Dance. Then in January we have our annual Bowling competition from Jan 2nd to the 3rd. This is an all nighter party with a lot of bowling, pizza, and fun. So you guys better start hitting the bowling ally’s if you want to take away the bowling trophy this year. We are doing great on membership with being 3rd place overall in membership nationwide this year. But we are still getting creamed by Missouri and more importantly NOR CAL. I don't know about you but I don't want to lose to our brothers in the North, that just wouldn’t be our style. Last I want to remind you all to make time to visit your brothers and help whenever possible. Sending you the Best, Kenneth Hawkins SCJ Congress Secretary 09-10 SCJ Sweetheart Hey everyone! I hope you all have been having a blast traveling around the Jurisdiction! I know I have and I've loved seeing all of you. I want to thank everyone who participated in the CHOC Walk. We helped raise money for the children's hospital and had a lot of fun. The Sweethearts will be selling t-shirts for $10. They say "I heart SH" as in Sweethearts and are available for anyone who wishes to purchase one. All money goes towards the Sweetheart’s fund, so I hope you all help support us by buying a shirt! I look forward to seeing you all at the events going on around the Jurisdiction. Remember to have fun and to support each other! Sweetheart Love, Elizabeth Marroquin SCJ Sweetheart 09-10 SCJ PRINCESS Hello SCJ, It has been a lot of fun to go to the many installations around the Jurisdiction lately. My greatest pleasure is seeing new young ladies being installed as Sweethearts and Princesses for Chapters that have not had ladies in those positions for a while. While the number of Chapters that have ladies involved in their Chapter is growing, there are still some who do not have a Sweetheart. If you are one of these Chapters and want help to contact a local Bethel or Assembly or just need someone to come and explain the Sweetheart program, please do not be afraid to contact Lizzy or me. We are here to be the connection to the girl's orders, so please let us know how we can help. It’s always exciting to have new faces join our Sweetheart’s program or even just to have more people come and support the Chapters. I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season and that I will see you soon. Rachel Reese SCJ Princess Page 7 June 2009 From The Jurisdiction Dad I hope that everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and a safe one! We had a large representation of Southern California Jurisdiction DeMolays and Young Ladies that went to Northern California Association for their conclave. Everyone that I talked with said that they had a good time and enjoyed themselves. A special thanks to all of the Advisors that drove everyone up and back. I would also like to talk about Membership! We had a great push for Membership last term with Mat Pinzon and Brandon Mann and this term’s officers, Max Shoemaker, Tyler Davies and Ken Hawkins have continued the Membership push. As of the first of December, we are only 8 new members short of being Positive Growth in Membership. So I would like to ask everyone to keep up the hard work for new Members and a BIG Thank You for all of the work you have been doing this year. Oh yes, we are tied for third place in ISC for new members and only one behind Nor Cal! I look forward to seeing everyone at the SCJ Holiday Dance. Ritual Competition is just around the corner, so let’s work on our ritual and plan on participating. If I do not see you before the Holidays, I hope that you and your family have a safe and wonderful Holiday. We all have a lot to be thankful for and we should not forget those that are not so fortunate; let us all try and bring some of the holiday spirit into their lives. Dad Lacroix Page 8 June 2009 FROM THE E.O. Season’s Greetings to My Southern California DeMolay Family We just returned from the Northern California Annual Convention in Sacramento. We were 23 strong. Our SCJ Master Councilor Max Shoemaker made us all very proud as he delivered another great speech in front of our DeMolay Brothers from the North while looking great in his white dinner jacket. A very special thanks goes to Dad Don Peterson, our Assistant Jurisdiction Dad, who volunteered not only to drive, but to drive his own vehicle in order to accommodate all of your youth going; also Dad Mark Pressey (Royal Coast League Dad) and Mom Amie Carr (Director of Sweethearts) for each driving a van of our members. As we prepare to welcome the Holiday Season this month, we need to stop and be grateful for everything we have. Many of us will be spending this very special time of year with family and friends; unfortunately there are many people who do not have anyone. It’s at this time of year when our Masonic teachings really shine, when we give up our time and personal resources to help those who are less fortunate than ourselves. When we as advisors practice charity, it is a wonderful teaching moment, when we prove to our youth that giving to others is truly one of the greatest and most rewarding act that we you can accomplish as a human beings. I want to take this opportunity to thank and acknowledge those chapters and leagues who continue to serve meals and or donate money to the Midnight Mission, collect food and distribute food baskets to the local needy families with small children, while others visit the sick or disabled. Mary Ann and I wish you the best that this Holiday Season has to offer, be safe and enjoy the time with your Family. Fraternally, Just Dad Key .
