East Bladen has rarely been
forced to rebuild, instead
relying on a reloading of
talent that keeps the Eagles
brand of football — centered
around a running game and
stiff defense — rolling along
toward a new playoff run
each November.
The names and numbers
may occasionally change,
but the results hardly do.
“We’ve got a lot of big
shoes to fill,” East Bladen
coach Robby Pries cautioned, pointing to the 16
seniors lost to graduation.
“You never really know how
it will all work out until
the whistle blows.”
Lost from last season’s
10-3 team that went two
games deep into the Class
2-A playoffs includes quarterbacks Alex Coates and
Ty McMillian, running back
Nikita Owens, tight end Zachary Johnson, linemen Chris
Cromartie, Pachaun Cloud
and Jonathan Melvin, and
defensive back Trevor Lloyd.
Still, Priest has plenty to
smile about.

Directing the Eagles’
offense is expected to be
junior Quinton Bedsole, who
gives East Bladen a good
passing option when he’s
not handing off to the trio of
senior running backs.
“Quinton will be the quarterback, but we’ll have some
packages in for Skippy (Sin-
cere Smith) when he steps in
at quarterback,” Priest said.
“The game situation will dictate that.
“I really like our depth at
running back, and the twins
(Ethan and Eian) will be all
over the field,” he added.
“But unlike last year, we really need to stay healthy.”
Overall, Priest is pointing
to one thing as the biggest
upgrade over last season:
speed.
“We’ll be fast everywhere,”
he said. “There are seven
players on defense who give
us a lot of speed.”
Priest is also high on a
transfer from New Hanover
High in Wilmington, A.J.
Winn, who Priest said “can
do a lot for us on both sides
of the ball.”
On the offensive and
defensive lines, where Priest
said graduation really took
a toll, the Eagles will be led
by junior Caleb Strait. On
defense, Tatum and the Hines
twins will give East Bladen
a solid corps of defensive
backs, while senior linebacker
Derrick Burney, junior linebacker James Higgins and
senior linebacker Michael
Walter give the Eagles a solid
second line of defense.
East Bladen will face a
good foursome in non-conference games — South Columbus, Whiteville, St. Pauls and
Wilmington Laney — before
getting into Four County
Conference play, starting
Sept. 23 against Midway.
“Obviously there are two
state finalists in Clinton and
Wallace-Rose Hill to contend
with, and they should be
plenty good again,” Priest
said. “After that, Midway is
always a handful — and both
Union and West Bladen will
be better.
“It’s a good, tough conference with no Friday’s off,” he
added. “We’ll be ready.”

ELIZABETHTOWN — With
the graduation of senior quarterbacks Ty McMillian and
Alex Coates, the Eagles are
searching for a QB1 for the
first time in three years, and
head coach Robby Priest has
two solid candidates.
“It’s a good old-fashioned
friendly competition,” Priest
said. “We’ll let them push each
other and see how it shakes
out.”
The two competitors, rising
juniors Quinton Bedsole and
Sincere Smith, aren’t making
the decision easy early on.
“Both of them are strong
competitors and bring a lot if
good qualities to the position,”
Priest said. “And regardless of
who starts at quarterback, both
will play key roles for us.”
He added that both players
have the advantage of being
infielders on the Eagles’ varsity
baseball team.
“That’s helped in a lot of
ways — especially with becoming good teammates and also,
since they are both middle
infielders, with their arm
strength,” Priest said.
Bedsole is a second baseman
and Smith is a shortstop.
So far, Priest has had plenty
of praise for both players.
“Quinton throws a good ball;
he’s been to summer camps
that helped with that,” Priest
said. “He’s got a quick release
and is athletic enough to
scramble.
“Skippy (Sincere) is very
athletic, a ball of energy who
can spin the ball well,” Priest
added. “He’s a dual threat with
good speed.”
Both Bedsole and Smith are
expected to take reps with the
first team offense through practices and during scrimmages
before a decision is made.
“We want to see who can get
the respect of teammates and
lead this team,” Priest said.

Another new era for West Bladen football opens
Knights hoping
to step up in
conference

DUBLIN — New
coach, new quarterback, new offense, new
defense … it all adds up
to a new era for West
Bladen football.
“Fans and opponents
are going to see a different breed of football
(with the Knights),” said
first-year head coach
Todd Pait. “We’ll still be
run-oriented on offense,
but were going to spread
the field and see what
happens. On defense,
we’ve made some key
changes and put in a different look.
“So far, all the players
are buying into it,” he
added.
West Bladen has quite
a few spots to fill after
the graduation of 17
seniors from last season’s 5-7 team — including quarterback Stefan
McDonald, running
backs Malique McDowell
and Da’quan Lennon,
kicker ray Jones, linebacker Idris Najeeullah,
and linemen David Gittens and Mason Skipper.
But Pait, who takes
the reins from Russell
Dove, who took the
head-coaching position
at South Columbus, said
he is quite pleased with
what he has.
“From what I was told
before I got here and
what I found … I think
we can be pretty good,”

excited about this team.
We have good depth at
most positions.”
Pait pointed to what
he says is a solid backfield filled with senior
quarterback Weston
Pidgeon, senior running
back James Moore and
junior running back B.J.
Drake. He’s also pretty
pumped up about a pair
of receivers — juniors
Davon Swindell and
Shaquille Johnson.
“Shaq, if he stays
healthy, can be a Div.
I receiver,” Pait said.
“And I think Daevone
will give us a good target, too.”
Pait said the offense
will operate out of the
Power Pistol, mostly
“because we have the
right personnel to run
it — but there will be
some twists, too.”
The offensive and
defensive lines will be
anchored by hulking
junior Jonathan Robinson and, at middle linebacker, Pait is high on
senior Hunter Pait.
“He’s a stud defensive
player,” the coach said.
The Knights will have
a familiar lineup of
non-conference games
— South Robeson, West
Columbus, Whiteville
and St. Pauls — which
Pait thinks will give his
team a good measuring
stick before the Four
County Conference
kicks off.
“We have some really
nice rivalry games in
the non-conference
portion,” Pait said.
“And those are always
good tests. Whiteville,
of course, will be the
biggest test, but I’m
looking forward to all of
them.”
The conference season will open on Sept.
23, and Pait said the
conference’s strength
rotates around the usual
three teams.
“Clinton is probably

the team to beat,” Pait
said. “That Skinner kid
is something and I’m
sure we will be watching
him play on Saturdays at
some point.
“But nobody will
count out Wallace-Rose
Hill or look past East
Bladen,” he added. “And
Midway can always be
trouble.”
As for his Knights,
Pait said they’ve been
putting in the work,
the attitude and effort
have been rally good,
and they’ll be ready to
compete.
“We’ve got our work
cut out, for sure, but we
have goals and, if we
can achieve them, we’ll
get to the playoffs and
see what happens,” Pait
said.

new offense being implemented.
“Wes is a pretty good
athlete and a very good
passer,” Pait said. “And
he’ll have some good
receivers to throw the ball
to.”
Where once West Bladen football centered heavily around the run game,
Pait said he’s looking to
be more of a balanced
offense and throw more
often. That makes Pidgeon
pretty happy.
“I love it,” he said. “I
think it’ll be amazing and
a lot of fun running this
offense.
“This is the best we’ve
looked in a long time,”
Pidgeon added, “and I’m
sure we’ll surprise some
people.”
After two seasons as the
Knights’ jayvee quarterback, Pidgeon sat out his
junior year after battling
a number of ankle injuries
and going through a bout
of kidney stones. But taking over the West Bladen
varsity is a dream come
true.
“I’m so glad to be
back and captaining the
offense,” Pidgeon said.
“Really can’t wait for the
season to start.”
While Pidgeon knows
he’ll have experience at
the running back position
around him, he also thinks
he’ll have some solid
weapons to throw the ball
to.
“We have some star
receivers,” he said. “Guys
like Shaq (Johnson) and
Daevon (Swindell). It’s
going to be fun; we’re out
to win the conference.”

Todd Pait takes the helm of Knights football

DUBLIN — A new era
officially began for West
Bladen football recently
when Todd Pait opened
the Knights’ practice as
the new head coach.
Pait is no stranger to
Bladen County.
A 1999 graduate of
the old Bladenboro
High, where
he also played
football, Pait
went on to play
college football
at Appalachian
State University
in Boone and
majored in education. He came
home to teach
at West Bladen and
served as jayvee football
coach.
Pait is also
a retired military officer,
serving with
the Army
infantry before
serving three
tours in Iraq
with the 101st
Airborne.
Most recently, Pait
has been an English
teacher and defensive
coordinator for Sycamore High in Pleasant
View, Tenn., where the
War Eagles finished 6-5
last season.
Pait takes over the
helm of a varsity program that was led for
the past three seasons
by Russell Dove, who
departed after the 2015
season to take the head
coaching job at South
Columbus. The Knights,
who were 16-19 overall
and 9-12 in Four County
Conference action under
Dove, have made the
playoffs two of the past
three years.
Pait, who is also the
brother of West Bladen
basketball coach Travis
Pait, has said he plans
to revamp the Knights
offense — switching
from the Wing-T to
the Pistol. Defensively,
Pait expects to make
no changes to the West
Bladen 4-4 set.

Brandy have three children: Summer, 8; Chase,
5; and Ryder, 1.
