Standing Forest Design Intent: To facilitate a contemplation of the relationship between person and place. First, to undercut the habitual estrangement between person and place, this estrangement is exaggerated, thereby bringing this unnatural dichotomy the the forefront of one’s consciousness. Whilst engaging this stark separation, these desired and unattainable locations draw our attention toward a tangible sense of longing, wonder, or a contemplation of our relationship with the place in which we find ourselves. Both an escape destination and a path, the mixed bed breaks the hard edges of the Earth Science and Engineering building, and creates eddies of space and energy. The native plant palette takes advantage of the contextual sun-richness, blocks the winter western winds and invites the cool summer breezes. The corridor presents itself as a threshold with an intimate space to look and learn more closely about the plant community.
