Notre Dame High School Annual Report 2010-2011 “We believe that God will give us more than the mind can imagine.” — St. Julie Billiart Notre Dame High School is a Catholic, all girls, college preparatory high school in the Diocese of Monterey. The school provides a rigorous academic program in a nurturing community that values the dignity and worth of each individual and the development of the whole person. To this end, the curricular and co-curricular programs offered at Notre Dame High School support the intellectual, spiritual, moral, aesthetic, and social growth of each young woman it serves. Recognizing that each individual is created in the image and likeness of God, the school celebrates and affirms a diverse cultural community and prepares its students to respond to their world with competence, confidence, and compassion. Enriched by the legacy of successful alumnae spanning the past half century, and in the tradition of a Notre Dame de Namur Learning Community, the school embraces the charism of the Sisters of Notre Dame. Notre Dame High School is committed to carrying out the very special mission of Preparing Young Women to Lead Extraordinary Lives. Message from the Principal Notre Dame High School is proud to present its 2010-11 Annual Report. Last year was a monumental year with the long awaited dream of a renovated state-of-the-art theater coming to fruition. In addition, other long awaited facility goals were accomplished: new student computers in the Media Center; a complete rewiring of the infrastructure of the school; installation of new energy efficient windows; painting of the entire school; renovation of two quads (in progress); new SmartBoards, new LCD projectors in the classrooms; new teacher computers (in progress). Nevertheless, our job is far from done, as progress in the school and the classroom is ever-changing and dynamic. Our school is a mirror of its constituent base: faith filled, Christ centered and ever hopeful. The time, talents, and dedication of Saint Julie Billiart and the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur live on and are manifested through the Hallmarks of a Notre Dame de Namur Learning Community. The scholastic notoriety of our graduates is clear with acceptances to numerous top universities and colleges... Our young women, the leaders of tomorrow, continue to demonstrate their academic prowess. Two varsity teams were noted as the top scholastic performers in all of Central Coast Section, and our Marine Biology class was chosen to launch a weather buoy in Monterey Bay though N.O.A.A. The scholastic notoriety of our graduates is clear with acceptances to numerous top universities and colleges in the nation such as UCLA, Stanford, Purdue, Emory College, and Santa Clara, to name a few. Without the generous philanthropy of our donors, the Board, school community and businesses in the area, our vision could not be a reality. As Principal Bedell stated, our nearly 50-year-old campus got its first major facelift. Our newly remodeled theatre is a technological gem that houses all of our expanding performing arts programs. The rest of our campus has been brought to life with new landscape architecture, exterior paint and windows. None of these capital improvements would have been possible without the generosity of our donors. They are the true heroes. The fact that we raised roughly 2 million dollars shows that the greater Notre Dame Family is absolutely dedicated to the growth and education of our young women. Thank you! Moving forward, the Notre Dame High School Board will be keenly focused on executing the 2010-2015 strategic plan. With the Transformation Project complete and freshmen enrollment up 9.5% from last year, we are starting to witness the fruits of our labor. The momentum and energy at today’s Notre Dame High School is palpable. We intend to keep it that way! Message from the Superintendent Please know that I feel truly blessed with the opportunity to be Superintendent for the Diocese of Monterey, and to be living each day in the light of Christ. As the daughter of one of the first lay principals in the Diocese of Oakland, I have always understood that ministering in a Catholic school was a true joy and blessing, one to be cherished and fully lived! I believe that Catholic education is the heart of the Church, and that Catholic schools provide for the development of the whole human person. In doing so, Catholic schools prepare our students for heaven, while providing academic excellence, and giving them the tools they need to be successful in the 21st century. My greatest passion is nurturing God’s children. I couldn’t ask for a more rewarding career and consider it to be a true ministry. I know that I have been blessed with the opportunity to be Superintendent here in the Diocese of Monterey and I look forward to the great work that we will share together here at Notre Dame High School.
