B. ~ Students should not be denied long distance Anyone who has lived in the dorms from 1985 to the present has experienced it The utter frustration associated with waiting in line to use your OWlt phone! With four people on relatively the same schedule, phone time can be the cause of some very heated discussions. Scratch that It's war! Everyone has their own ideas about which phone conversation is the most important. Everyone bas "just got to talk with- their boyfriend, mother, drinking buddy, etc. and soon it turns into a selfish game of "Me First This whole problem could be eradicated by one of two possible solutions. First, the Housing Department could issue each suite one small handgun to be placed on the counter next to the phone jack. The gun would be immediately put to use by the speaker whenever rudely intenupted by a nagging roommate. The one on the phone could simply, shall we say, silenu the disturbance. The second, and obviously more rational solution would be for the Housing Department to merely follow through on a promise made to the donn students five years ago. Get us a real phone system! As if it weren't bad enough to have so few phones for so many people while four other jacks laydonnant in our rooms, still another problem exists. Not only is our time wasted in having to wait our tum to use the phone, but our money is wasted also when it comes to long distance. Perhaps it would be better to say "lack of long distance". It is totally unbelievable that the school expects the resident students to be able to afford a 95 cent service charge on every call made using an AT&T calling card after every other fee we're slapped with during the . course of an average semester. The I\'Crage American diet seems ap- .,. paUingly low in fiber and high in Therefore, I was inlerested to re:adabout lhe New PritiJtin Pro· pam. This is not a new diet fad. TIle Pritikin way of eating was first devised by Nathan Pritikin ill9S8 following his diaguosisof kcan disease. It has recently been brought up to date for the 19iXrs market. Nathan Pritikin's original diet saved his life and Lbe lives of otbers. When bedicd In 1985 at ffJ, his autopsy revealed a "'near or oomplete absence of" unhealthy arteries. So what is the New Pritikin Program? First, It is nOl really a diel as such. Although peopleon the program do lose weighl. ilS main goat is 10 reduce the risk of hean disease. The Program reduces the fat inlake by ban.niog atl butler or margarine, all sugar (even honey). and all oils from your fOOd intake. It also emphasizes, like many others, low calorie vegetables and fruiL So how is tbe Pritikin diel dif· ferenl from others? Firsl, it reduces fal to only 10% of your food intake (the avearge American cats 40%). second, il greatly reduces Ihe intake of protcin. Finally, a comprehensive exercise rouline is suggcSled as pan of Ihc program. Nalhan Prjtiltin's many books have sold millions over Ihe last tenyears, but Ihe medical prores· sion has somelimes been crilical or the drastic measures taken by the diet. The US Government suggeslS reducing fat 10 only 3O'J& percenl of intake. Many doctors feel Lbe diet is QCC:SSM.. " ...although people on Jose weight, (the diet's) main goal is to reduce the riskof hcartdis· case..." the program do However, Pritiltin advocales feel Ihal dr35lic measures are necessary 10 combat chOlesterol. If a diet like this can u-ansform a polentlally fatal hean into a healthy one, it musl be good. A new hOllOt movie! Just when 1 thought I was doomed to reviewing old romance movies! Well, anyway, back to Nighlbrud.. As some of)'Ou may know already. Nighlbrted is a boot by aive Barker. one of the most promising borrot "'liters Mlrking loday. He wrote the saoenplay of this movie, which stars David Cronenberg, the director of 11te Fly. The Nig.btbreed, as these monsters are called, have lh-ed in Midian for oyer foUl hundred years in order to protect themselYes from their WOrsl enemies- mankind.. Turns out that theNightbroed are the laSt temaining Shapeshifters in the world, the others baving been destroyed by man during witch trials and jusl MOVIE REVIEW Nightbreed Rated R: Violence, gore, coarse language Starring: David Cronenberg aboutlIlyothet perpetnlted hor· rer that )'OU can name. Aaron Boone discovers tbe secret of the Nig.blbreed and decides that be wants to join Utem. But before doing so, be makes one fatal mls. take-he tells his psychiatrist (David Cronenberg) the whole story. The good doctor believes him, not because he has In honest face, but because another one of his patients named Narcisse is telling almost the same story. Narcisse asks for Boone's help in getting to Midian, and ends up "dying" in tbe bospiial while Boone escapes to Midian, I remote a;metery which houses the monsters underground.. From here on, tbe movie builds into a complicaled maze of plots, SUbplOts, and twists tbat keep the viewer on edge all the way to the explosive ending. The special effects utilized in this movie add greatly to the plot, and give the audience the foeting that they ue trapped inside a surreal nightmare.. (Jive Barker himsell has done an eu:eUent job of building up I good plot andstory in this IDO\Iie. TbeplOlOfJVqjubrmI uses an actual storyline and relies mostly on the characten themselves, without resorting to the typical tradition of gIatuitous gore. David Cronenberg has outdone himsell here as well His acting debut in this movie was outstanding, and his role as the psychotic dodor was exceUcnL Watching bim makes you wonder what really goes on in his mind..Hmm.
