Hello to everyone.
Hope you all have had a wonderful month, have worked hard (not house work) and will have plenty of
things for show & tell.
Last month we had a wonderful program presented by Christy Puetz from the Bead Museum. She had
lots of things to show us and gave a very informative program on the history of beads. If you missed it, you
missed a good one.
I believe that February’s program will be presented by our last grant recipient Diane Wilson. I think she will
be showing us all about felting. If you would like to apply for the grant please write up your proposal and tell
us how you are going to use it. You can give your paper to me or any other board member.
Start on you Fair entries NOW!!!!! In case you did not know there is a $75.00 Marybell Keller award. I
worked very hard so that I might win it a second time but I guess it was not given out because of the lack of
competition. We need to enter or they may just eliminate the entry. Just think what you can buy at the Fiber
Factory with that amount of money. There may be talk of not holding the fair but I do not think the State
will want to give that land back. The land was donated to the state as long as the State Fair be held there and
should it ever be moved the land reverts back to the donors estate. I think that if they do away with the fair
the same thing goes.
I AM A GREAT GRANDMA!!!!!!!
He was born January the 7th. He weighed 7lbs 14oz and was 20inches long. His name is Chase Charles
Haskins. His Mother Ashley & Father Anthony are both doing fine. My Grandson Brandon (the college brain) informed every one that his Nephew’s name is a complete sentence. Brandon has always been
very smart. He and his brother have given Carmen a run for her money. Anthony has a Charter Fishing
Business Bed & Breakfast run buy his Mother. He calls his boat “The Lunch Box”. I guess that I should say
something about my son-in-law Charles known as Chuck. He is the Minister of the Nazarene Church in
Sitka Alaska.
That will be all for now. See you all in February.
LaVila
PS: From the Critter Gang, Gypsy and Klinger want you to know that the G-Man is missing in action and
presumed dead. They are both very sad and Klinger walks around the house looking and crying. Klinger
misses his buddy and so do I
DO NOT FORGET ABOUT PUTTING IN FOR THE GRANT!!!
Next Meeting: February 6th at 10 AM

MOA DEADLINE

August - May
Serendipitous Spinners to bring the foodies!

The Refreshment Corner
This was just too good to pass up. I was looking for a natural-edible really unique dye
for Feburary. What should I find in my relentless search? A really cool place to visit
and a reason to go. A SYMPOSIUM! In fact the 14th International Fungi & Fibre
Symposium 2010 September 6–12, 2010 in Gysinge, Sweden! Ok Ok it’s a bit far, but
the colors you get from MUSHROOMS are fantastic. Here’s the link - www.ifff2010.
eu/symposietenglish.htm By the way, they have currency converter on their page.
This month belongs to....Let me think....The Serendipitous Spinners! Something really
earthy comes to mind. Have fun spinners finding just that spectacular natural stuff to
get your fingers into. Oh I know, how about Chips and Dips?

ADWSG Workshops Updates
If you paid your $75 deposit, the remainder $75 is due at
this time. Pay at the meeting or by mail.
We have had a wonderful response to our workshops in
February and March. I have deposits and promises, now
it’s time to collect the rest of the payments.
Judith MacKenzie McCuin - Spinning, Dyeing, and
Weaving - March 8, 9, & 10:
If you paid your deposit of $25/day, I need to collect $25
for each day you register.
Unfortunately, I do not have more information about these
workshops.
Bylaws read as follows:
“A minimum number of participants to pay expenses need to
be signed up and 1/2 the estimated cost is collected at that time.
The deposit is refunded only if another member fills the space, or
if there are are more than the minimum number of members
participating. The remainder of the fee is collected one month
before the workshop.”
Thanks for all your cooperation. Contact me if you have
further questions.

Workshop Chair
Daryl Lancaster - Jumpstart Vest - February 21 & 22 :
I have 19 programs in my business Southwest Learning Sources, Inc. One of the programs is Navajo Weaving. I present the Navajo Weaving Program to grades K - 6. Different yarn weights are used for the different age levels. The most popular grade level for
this program to 4th grade since they study Arizona History. It is a 2 hour program. I introduce the program with a short history on
the Navajo and their rug weaving. Then I demonstrate the carding and spinning of wool, using a hip spindle, and show a variety of
rugs from my collection. The students then have a hands-on which is the weaving of a small coaster rug. I am unable to buy Aunt
Lydia’s rug yarn which is what works well.. It is no longer available. Any rug yarn seems hard to find. I would be willing to buy any
heavy weight yarn that anyone has.
Thanks,

Wanted
Do you know of an Arizona-based group focused on using native plants to dye
fibers that also helps educate? I’m writing a piece on “craft gardens” for PHG
and want to include one good resource for more info on each subject, but preferably not a business. The equivalent of a garden club for dye enthusiasts. For example, for growing and using gourds, there’s the Arizona Gourd Society, which
links to gourd crazies around the state. arizonagourdsociety.com.
Arizona Herb Association does a little with teaching about dye plants, but
they’re not focused on that, and less so in recent years.
Thanks for any input! Cathy Cromell - [email protected]

Southwest Fiber Festival 2010
Calling for Instructors
Estes Park is just gorgeous in the summer and this is a
wonderful fiber festival. We offer a fair compensation
for instructors, and either a lodging stipend or mileage
(if considered local). You are allowed to charge a materials fee for materials supplied and you collect those
directly from the students. We feed you a couple of
lunches as well, and there’s a lovely Thursday reception
at a fine gallery sponsored by the local weavers. Please
note that I canNOT promise you any sort of booth as
that is another department altogether and the booths
are juried in, so be aware of that and plan accordingly.
We have many instructors who like to have the time
off after teaching to ENJOY the festival.
Friday, October 29 – Half day or full day classes available. Saturday, October 30 – Morning classes available only. Go to: http://
www.southwestfiberfestival.com/, click on ‘Contact’ and fill in
necessary information.
There will also be animals, vendors, shearing, skein judging and
other events going on all day on Friday.
If you have any questions, please contact Elaine Ross, Festival
Chair , [email protected], 520-825-3668 (home), 520-4297685 (cell)
I am in particular need of weaving workshops of both
one day and two day lengths. We need something to
tempt the expert weavers in the area as well as the beginning weavers who are thinking of getting into the
craft. Keep in mind also that the students are coming
from all over the place and will have to tote equipment, which they are quite prepared to do in most
cases!
Felted Tapestry Workshop
Join Master Felter, Sharon McFeely, and Create a
Beautiful Felted Tapestry
I am back working with my sixth grade class at Mountain Oak
and looking forward to teaching some felting classes this winter
and spring. For me felting is an artistic process involving the four
elements, as we work together this day, you will experience a sense
of transformation as the qualities of the wool metamorphose with
water, warmth, soap and our rhythmic pressure.
Submissions on other fiber and fiber-related crafts are
also welcome. You are not necessarily limited to wool
products, and the envelope may be pushed a bit - I
have a button artist and a natural body care product
workshop planned as well as basketry. Traditional fiber
crafts are of course the best!
For this workshop, all materials will be provided. If you have felting
needles or a multiple needle punch, do bring that. Bring two old
towels, lunch and beverage. The tapestries we make that day will be
approximately 12” X 15” in size. Everyone will be able to complete
their tapestry during the workshop time. Detailed handouts will
be shared with you as well. A picture file will be provided for you
to use. If you have an image you would like to work from, bring it
with you in your mind or on paper! Or just go for color play with
your imagination, felting loves experimenters. All levels of felting
experience are welcome!
PLEASE email me directly (suzanne@fireantranch.
com) if you would like an application packet which
will include the particulars.
