From the president’s desk...
March is here with two deadlines! You have until the end
of the March 5th meeting to submit a proposal for the
$250 Education Grant from the guild. We currently have
one proposal. All we need is your name, contact information and how you would use the money for study, the only
requirement presenting a program the following year to
the guild.
You have until March 11 to submit entries to the Maricopa County Fair. Our guild will be demonstrating at the fair on Wednesday and
Sunday. The fair is running April 13-17th. Admission is free Wednesday through
Friday from 10 AM to 3 PM.
Nominations for the five elected offices, President, Vice President of Programs,
Vice President of Workshops, Secretary and Treasurer will be open till the voting
on April 2. We are looking for the office as well as an assistant who will work with
the officer so they will be trained in the position for future service. These positions
are important but do not take a lot of time, please consider serving. Our Guild is
only as good as we make it. Some people who have served for years would like to
be replaced with younger members with new ideas and energy.
“Fibers through Time” conference is planned for April 19-22, 2012 in Phoenix.
The conference board are accepting proposal for workshops at this time. Information on submitting proposals can be found by contacting [email protected].
In your service,

Th e Re f re s h m e n t C o r n e r
Einstein said we as humans use only a very small portion of our brains. So to the web I went to find tidbits
to fill up corners of unused brain. A little web search here and there and you can find out just about anything. After all, with the billions of searches a day, the collage of ideas and data is continually expanding.
Like everything you wanted to know about string theory. So I started to dig and the more I dug, the more –
yes you know the rest. So I opted for the simple search. STRINGY. And the web said - ‘no results for your
search.’ What no results for the pattern ‘stringy!’ Circle and Square are patterns, but Stringy’s not a pattern?
Who knew. There’s stringy this and stringy that but no pattern stringy.
So EVERYONE’s challenge this month is to find something edible that is
the pattern STRINGY! Oh by the way, cheese is already taken. ~ Eve

Bisbee Fiber Arts Guild
Offers Rag Rug Variation Workshop
Bisbee Fiber Arts Guild announcing: Tom Knisely from Berlin, Pennsylvania will be conducting a Rag Rug Variation Workshop, March
27th and 28th from 9:30 to 4:30 to be held at the Bisbee Fiber Studio.
This workshop is for
the beginning rag rug
weaver as well as experienced weavers. The
class will include rugs
that are warp faced and
weft faced, along with
numerous examples of
twills and twill derivatives. There is a draft
for M’s & O’s that
achieves a checkerboard
effect. Some drafts may
seem familiar because of their history and wide use during the 1930’s and
40’s. This is a round robin class so everyone will get a chance to work on
the 14 different designs. Register before February 24th.
Class fee is $115.00 To register or for more information please go to
www.bisbeefiberarts.com or call Cathey Cordes at 520-508-6678.
Tom Knisely is manager of Mannings Handweaving School and Supply
in PA. He is a frequent contributor to Handwoven Magazine and is an
international instructor with a special interest in historic textiles. Tom’s
most recent Handwoven contribution is in the January/February 2011

quality items that will generate interest in a raffle.
The raffle at the 2010 FTT conference brought in
$2700.
The Arizona Federation of Weavers and Spinners Guilds
announces Fibers Through Time 2012. This conference
will be April 19 – 22, 2012 at 4 Points Sheraton at Metro
Center in Phoenix. Instructor proposals will be available at
guild meetings or by contacting Beki Welsch at bekown@
yahoo.com and due May 30, 2011. Instructors will be notified whether they have been selected or not in June of 2011.
Eight to ten workshops will be offered. All workshops
will be 2 ½ days in length. We are hoping for a variety of
proposals, including expanding into quilting and other crafts
that are not strictly weaving and spinning. Many of our
members are looking for other crafts to try, so if you teach
another craft, please submit a proposal.
There will be a judged (not juried) show at the
conference. This means all items submitted will be
accepted and displayed, but a judge and viewer’s
choice awards will be given. Please think about
submitting your work for the show.
Cost of the conference will be around $225 per person, and
rooms will be no more than $89 a night, including a buffet
breakfast. Each room has a small refrigerator and microwave. Included in the conference fee is a 2 ½ day workshop,
2 lunches and 2 dinners (one dinner is the banquet). Early
registration will begin September 15 and end December 15,
2011. Last day to register will be February 1, 2012. Early
registration will reflect a $50 savings over late registration.
The Arizona Federation of Weavers and Spinners Guilds
is looking for volunteers to serve on conference committees. Committee members will get to help choose which
workshops will be offered based on instructor proposals.
Committees include Hospitality, Publicity, Show, Raffle, etc.
Most committee work will be done through email. Contact
Beki Welsch if you would like to be on a committee.
Raffle baskets are requested to help raise funds to help keep
the cost of the conference down. Please consider donating a
basket filled with goodies (fiber related or not) or items that
can be added to other items for a mixed basket. Each guild
is expected to donate one basket to the cause. Please, only

NEW Felted Flowers Pins, Hair Ties and Crazy
Sticks. OFFERED TWICE!
After years of trying to stay afloat on grants and
donations, The Glendale Bead Museum could be
closing. The Bead Museum moved from Prescott to
Glendale in 1999 and is located at 5754 W. Glenn
Drive, Glendale.
For Adults : Sunday, April 17 , 1-4 PM For Children (ages 7-12) Saturday, April 30, 9 –12 noon.
Each participant will go home with beautiful flower
pins, hair ties and something we call crazy sticks!
Class size 3-6 $35.00. For more information, contact Sharon at [email protected]
The museum could team with another museum or
group that would subsidize the museum’s expenses at
its current location, team with another museum and
move there, or become an “orphan” collection and
split up to go to other museums.
I have seen the museum while it was in Prescott. It
is worth the trip to see it. They have historical beads
from the time before Christ and much more. It is
really interesting and educational. I hope you get a
chance to go before they close.

In Need of a Loom? Here’s one being given away
to a good home.
The loom is both a table
loom, and does have legs
which can be attached, so
can place on the floor. I
have attached a couple of
pictures of the loom.
It has 4 harnesses and the
heddles are sturdy thread
instead of metal. The loom
was made in Sweden and is
over 50 years old, and the
make is Lillstina. The weaving width is 27”. The loom
seems to be in very good
condition. If anyone is
iinterested or has questions,
my phone number is 623444-2851, and my email is
[email protected].
