Airship Hangar
During the First World War, the French Marine Nationale built
this Hangar in order to shelter dirigible airships which were
in charge to fight German submarines. This building was
then used to house some coastal artillery batteries before
the German Occupation. In 1944, the Americans set there
their workshop for the vehicles and weapons, employing
many German prisoners. That is why the graffiti are in two
languages. After the war, the Marine Nationale used the
hangar as a storage and finally sold the site in 1998.
Entirely built in concrete, it is unique in the world and is
classified “Historical Monument”.
The visit has two parts: visit first the museum which
explains the different parts of its history with archives,
videos, model and an exhibition on the Battle of Montebourg in
1944. Then visit the Hangar with a possibility to fly indoor in a 1-person dirigible (only in
July and August).
The association Amis du Hangar à Dirigeables of Ecausseville was created in 2003 in order
to prepare the Hangar restoration and assure its promotion. The members welcome the
visitors. Picnic tables on site.

the “must-see” events of the D-Day Landing.
This visio-guide, equipped with GPS, leads you
to strategical (and sometimes unknown) places
around Sainte-Mère-Eglise and Utah Beach and
helps you to better understand the events of June 1944
with testimonies, archives and videos.
This GPS circular trail is composed of thirteen sites which were
critical points in the battle for the liberation of the Carentan
Sector. Here, American and German paratroopers fought pitched
battles over several days. The main missions of American soldiers
were to protect the troops that had landed on Utah Beach,
and to capture Carentan as quickly as possible. Not before
the 12th June, following a bloody battle, could this mission be
accomplished...

is a portable prefabricated bridge, designed for military use and
allowing a maximum range of 60 m. It does not require special
tools or heavy equipment for its construction, its components
are small enough to be transported by truck and the bridge is
strong enough to allow passage of tanks. It is considered as a
model of military engineering.
The first Bailey bridge on French soil was built on 8th and
9th June 1944, on the Caen canal to the sea, near the castle
of Benouville, next to Pegasus Bridge. Bailey was given a
knighthood for this invention.
Two Bailey Bridges were built in the area of Carentan in June
1944. One of them is still in use today: near the lock called “Brévands” on the Route de
Brévands. The other, called “Tucker Bridge”, linked Carentan and Saint Hilaire-Petitville
over the Taute on Rue du Pont.

Sainte-Mere-Eglise
Quiet village situated in the heart of the marshlands
and bocage landscapes, an event will change its destiny
forever on June, 6th 1944 when American paratroopers
from the 82d Airborne are dropped to liberate the village,
the Cotentin, Normandy, France and then Europe.
The “borne 0” in front of the towhall is the stone mark that starts the Way of Liberty,
road led by General Patton and his troops for France liberation.
This way ends in Bastogne, Belgium were the last of the 1200 stone marks can be found.
The two stain windows in the church of Sainte
Mère Eglise are dedicated to the paratroopers who
came to liberate the village. The stain window
“Holly Mother of Peace” has been offered in 1947
by the inhabitants. The Madonna and Child usually
surrounded by angels, is here by paratroopers.
Saint Mickael stain window has been offered by
Veterans of the 505th Regiment of the 82nd Airborne
on the 25th anniversary of D-Day in 1969.
The dummy hanging on the steeple refers to
what happened to John Steele, 505th Regiment
of the 82nd Airborne paratrooper who hung with
his parachute almost 2 hours. He came back at
the end of the 50’s, he told his story and the
movie “the longest day” that went out in 1962
participate actively to the village fame.
Thanks to the 15 boards of the historical tour in
the village, learn the anecdotes and stories about
Sainte Mère Eglise. Free leaflet at the Tourist Office.
Linked to the story of June 1944, the biscuit maker proposes home-made biscuits in
form of a parachute among a large range of local products.
22
Utah Beach
In each village, several monuments give tribute to our
liberators and each year, ceremonies and events are organized
to thank again all these young people who came from the other
side of the Atlantic ocean. The Memorial of the Paratroopers
with Iron Mike statue situated on the strategic point of
la Fière (Kellam bridge) is part of them, so as the USAAF
Monument of Picauville or the US Navy Monument in Utah
Beach.
Utah Beach, one of the 5 chosen beaches for D-Day in
Operation Overlord on June 6th 1944 on Norman coasts by
the Allied, has seen 23,250 men 17,000 vehicles and 1,695
tons of equipment landed on its ground. Several monuments
and a museum tell its story.
The Leclerc Monument situated on Saint Martin de
Varreville beach, next to Utah Beach gives tribute
to the 2nd Armored Division which landed August, 1st
1944. After several fierce fights in Normandy, Leclerc
Division liberated Paris August, 25th 1944 and then
Strasbourg, November, 23rd 1944 and
ended its victorious ride in Berchtesgaden,
Germany, Hitler’s Eagle nest. The Kufra
oath of Philippe de Hautclocque and his
men after the fight on March 2nd, 1941 said
« we promise that we won’t lay down our
arms before our flag colours, our beautiful
colours, will wave on Strasbourg cathedral »
and it really happened that way.

La Maison
du Parc
In the heart of the triangle « Caen, Mont
Saint Michel, Cherbourg », in between
two counties ((Manche and Calvados), the
Regional Park spreads on 150,000 hectares
and gathers 150 villages.
This rural territory extends between
preserved landscapes of bocage (little
fields surrounded by hedges), floodable
meadows, moor and littorals. It offers
a great diversity of flora and fauna
renowned at an international level. Its
particularity and its identity are given
thanks to its vast humid zone, 30,000 ha
of marshlands which represent a major
stake for its inhabitants and actors.
On 500 m², the Maison du Parc is the ideal starting point to organise your visit of the
Cotentin and Bessin marshlands. You will find all information and leaflets you need.
Differents spaces: information, relaxing area, souvenir shop, exhibitions allow a fun and
sensitive discovery of this preserved area. Until December 2014, exhibition “EXP’eau”
explains the water cycles in the marshlands.
Outside, on a hundred hectares of marshlands, the bird sanctuary opens its territory to
you.
Observatories are accessible along a pond for a discovery of birds in their natural
environment. Take the path with teaching boards to access the bird sanctuary. Take
a moment to look at the “garden of tadpoles” and learn what you can do in your own
garden to welcome the little fauna. All year long, take part of the several animations.

Lighter boat and forge
of TRIBEHOU
This is the story of the earth, water and fire...
With earth ground and water, we build
houses, on swamp water we sail by barge,
with fire and water we forge, with water
we extinguish fire thanks to the fire pump
(1908).
In 1988, during the ditching of channels
along the road to St. Georges de Bohon,
this boat was removed from the mud
and then exposed in 1991 under a
shelter of land and « Rotz » (mixture of reeds and sedge ).
The barges are flat-bottomed boats, allowing easy passage into the sometimes shallow
marsh. They are built mainly of wood in oak or elm, a length of 11-17 m. Two major
projects to Tribehou flourished between 1800 and 1854 giving work to ten carpenters
and 53 boatmen. Since the Middle Ages, the boats brought back the mudy sand of the
Bay of Veys for land fertilizing and returning with goods (lime, bricks ...).

« À HUE ET À DIA! Story of draft horses in
Normandy »
Before the tractor was the main machine, ox,
donkey and mostly horse are used in Norman
farms for agricultural works and daily transportation.
In la Manche, which specialized very early in breeding for milk, a strong link unifies the farmer
to his horse since more than a century. Motorization of agriculture is nowadays a fact but what
about this animal traction which seems to be much more than a simple tool?

1- The Medieval Arcades
An unique example in Normandy of four medieval houses
incorporating 10 pillars. They are said to be the remains of a
former covered market which is also said to have existed in the
14th century on the south side.
2- Hôtel de Dey
The facade of this house dates from the 17th
century. A plaque is visible stating that Honoré
de Balzac stayed in this house in 1836 and wrote
there a novel called « Le Réquisitionnaire ». The
interior of this house had until recently some l7th
century wood panelling.
36
3- Hôtel de Maillé
Napoléon 1st slept in this hotel during his trip to Cherbourg
on May 25th, 1811. In 1861, it became the presbytery.
4- The Church
Notre-Dame de Carentan, a listed building, was built in the
11th century. From the Romanesque period, remain only the
west door, the lower part of the pillars and the four main pillars of the crossing
with the Romanesque arches.
In 1443 the English were occupying the country. The church was in ruins. Reconstruction
started first with the nave and the south aisle. Guillaume de CERISAY, knight, the bailiff of
Cotentin, richly endowed the church. Its surface area was doubled with the construction
of the choir, ambulatories and the north aisle, about 1466.
The dedication took place in 1470. In 1517, the Chapelle du Rosaire
[Chapel of the Rosary] was added at the end of the choir.
From the same period are the screen surrounding the
choir and about fifteen stained glass windows.
In June 1944, American bombers, at the time of D-Day,
caused serious damage to the spire, the west door and
the choir. The organ was badly damaged, stained glass
shattered, the roof holed and the clock damaged.
Fortunately, in 1940 the old stain glass had been taken
out and stored in the countryside. One stain window
from 1955 tells the story of Carentan liberation by
the 101st Airborne. At the top part, we can see the
parachute drops above Carentan marshlands, a family
during exodus, a doctor, soldiers in action and the
101st Airborne insignia.
The paintings
Some have been restored:
A very beautiful “Assumption of the
Virgin” from 1652 in the choir, in the
middle of the magnificent reredos
behind the high altar (1655). The “Giving
of the Rosary” 18th century in the Chapelle
du Rosaire. The picture is surmounted
by an other painting representing “God
Father”. A beautiful “Assumption” 17th
century in the south transept. A “Virgin
of the Apocalypse” in the north transept.
A “Martyrdom of Saint Gorgon” and a
“Crucifixion of Saint Peter” two wooden
panels 16th century.
The Great Organ Notre-Dame
It was rededicated in 1990. Listed for its
case and pipes, it has just been restored
in the Classical style of the end of the 17th
century. It is one of the few instruments
in this style in the Departement de la
Manche.
Its origin is unclear, and one has to
make do with conjecture. Recently
discovered documents allow one to date
this organ precisely. It was built between
1803 and 1805. It is the work of Louis
Lair, organ builder at Le Mans.
37
5- Ship-owner’s house
A beautiful facade of ship-owner’s house with coat of arms dating of the Second Empire:
steamboat. A few meters away, astonishing portal facade of a 19th century house.
6- The Marina
A very long time before the present marina, a harbour was established at Carentan by a
Gaulish family, the Unelles, and was destroyed by the barbarian invasions at the end of
the 4th century.
In the Middle Ages, a port was established near the town walls at the “Quay-au-Vin” in
the river bed of the Gouffres, which ran into the Taute. A trade in merchandise (salted
foods, cereals, poultry, wine, salt, “bundles of reeds” to feed the salt bath furnaces) was
operated by sailing-barges through the marshlands.
Before 1700, boats of 100 to 200 tons sailed up the river as far as the town, but silting and
alluvial deposits put paid to the port.
After 1700, for hygienic, but also strategic and economic reasons, plans were considered
for draining the marshes surrounding the town. Under the influence of Napoleon
Bonaparte, starting in 1805, canals were dug, sluices installed, and a new port planned
using the magnificent Haut Dick Canal, with a double
lock. Work began in 1842 and finished in 1851.
Significant trade developed between Le Havre and
Carentan from then until 1940.
In June 1944 operations relating to the Allied Landings
caused serious damage: the sluices were destroyed
and silting started again. It was not until 1981 that
port activity was restarted, but only for water sports.
In 1983 the Carentan Marina was opened for amateur
sailors. The yachting harbour has got every year for
23 years the « European Blue Flag ».
Water level is maintained thanks to the lock gates.
Access to the see is possible thanks to a marked-up
channel crossing the beautiful and wild Baie des
Veys.
Le Haut Dick: A trail along the banks allows to do a pleasant stroll around the harbour,
crossing the Canal bridge and the lock gates, a fitness circuit has been laid out.
7- Canal Bridge
Built in the 20th century, this work of art is unique in France: it allows the 4 lane
RN13 to pass under the tidal basin between the marina and the sea. The up-grading
of the RN13 between Caen and Cherbourg to a non-toll motorway, inevitably requiring
Carentan to be bypassed, was the trigger for these works. It was inaugurated on 6 June
38
1994 as part of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Allied Landing. At the lowest
point, the carriageway is 10 metres below the normal water level of the canal. One of the
main problems caused by this design is the resistance of the structure to the hydrostatic
pressures resulting from the presence of varying ground water levels. To solve the
problem, this water is permanently drained by removing it from within an apron around
the structure, and the area is under constant surveillance.
From the aesthetic point of view, the architect, Charles LAVIGNE, had the idea of
exploiting the presence of the stays which bear the pressures exercised laterally on the
walls, to give the impression of the inverted hull ribs of a wooden ship. In the meantime,
do not be surprised if, as you pass under the canal bridge, you see a boat sailing past
above your car!
8- Hôtel de Lessey
The Auxais family from Sainte-Marie-du-Mont built it in the 17th century. It later
became the Augustinian Convent. It now houses the Notre-Dame Catholic School. The
entry porch has been walled and in 1927, a second floor was built, modifying the original
proportions.
9- Hôtel de Ponthergé
The house was built in 1554. Interesting sculptured double doorway with buttresses, and
decorated with delicate arabesques in the Renaissance style.
An incidental detail: by the terms of a deed of 28 November 1695, the ownership of this
house conferred the right of burial in the church.
10- Townhall
The building was constructed between 1644 and 1652
by the Sisters of the Order of Our Lady, who opened their
convent there in March 1652.
There was a chapel, at the end of the east wing of the
building giving onto the Rue Holgate, and a cemetery. The
east wing was completed in 1655. The facade of the central
section was rebuilt in 1717, the west wing dating from the
end of the 18th century.
In 1792, the nuns received the order to leave the
convent, the town wishing to use part of the buildings.
The convent served in turn as barracks, military
quarters, police station, secondary school, office for
the police court, library, primary schools and finally the
municipal offices were set up there. Alliance between
past and present, in the square side, we can notice a
classic but very modern laying out: a pretty artificial river with a waterfall.
39
11- Fountain washhouse
It was built in 1784, using the plans drawn
up by Boullée, the Director of the Highways
Department for Carentan, in the ancient area
called “les fontaines” because several springs
ran into it. The washhouse, containing a shallow
sink of wide slabs of bedded stone, is open to
the sky. It is surrounded by a covered gallery of
massive columns of dressed Caen stone. These
square based columns carry an imposing wooden
structure on capitals. Superb gargoyles in
sculptured stone decorate this sink.
Just behind the reservoir, walking the few steps up on the right, a narrow
spring channel goes through tree roots. This spring is the one filling up the washhouse.
At the top, you will find a modern marble sculpture: “Ensemble vers l’eau de la” a play on
words about water and the therafter.
We are at the end of the circuit, we hope you have seen the treasures of our little town,
attached to its past but turned to future.

discover the hidden vestiges of this town.
At each stop, commentaries will tell you
the story of the place, the characters and
some anecdotes.
Birds are essential to the nature balance and for
human being in town. With their daily feeding, they
control the destructive species (caterpillar, aphid...).
They bring a great help to gardeners!
They also participate with their presence and their
songs to a “good way of life” in town.
But, some birds have to face an “accommodation
crisis” due to a lack of natural cavities (hollow shafts,
building openings...). Are concerned: blue and great
tits, sparrows...

Listed Churches
BRÉVANDS: Church Notre-Dame de l’Assomption: a church
with a vaulted crypt decorated with a fresco, a painted
representation of the Virgin with Child from the 13th century.
Seated Virgin with Child in polychrome stone (15th century).
Transept of Romanesque origin. Altar and retable in polychrome
stone and wood (17th and 18th century). Oak stalls from the 17th
century. Recumbent figure of a woman and her child who died
in 1632. Magnificent avenue of yews. View of the Baie des Veys.
The church and crypt St Loup listed since 1954.
APPEVILLE: Church Notre-Dame de l’Assomption: the church, a classified
ancient monument, was formerly dependent on the Abbey of Lessay. It
is noted for the quality of its style, the uniformity of its construction,
built at one time at the beginning of the 13th century, and also for its
excellent state of preservation: almost unaltered, a nearly perfect
expression of Cotentin rural gothic art. At its centre, a square tower
forming the lantern tower and bell tower, topped by a slender spire.
Single nave, choir with shallow chevet, prominent transept, sexpartite
vaults, 15th century porch. Listed since 1950.
AUVERS: Church Saint Etienne: a gothic church in the care of
the C.L.M.H., a government agency for the care of ancient
monuments. Flamboyant porch with buttressed corners
topped by slender pinnacles (15th century). Romanesque
limestone baptismal basin, carved with thirteen
Romanesque arcatures and two tores. Listed since 1994.
PICAUVILLE: Church Saint Candide: Built in the 13th century, the
nave looks like one of the Paris region. It can be explained by the
fact that Picauville used to be owed by Saint Louis and because of an
architect closed to the royal family, it has been built the way you see
it. Listed since 1961.
42
CHEF-DU-PONT: Church Sainte Colombe en Cotentin.
This 12th century church has kept many Romanesque parts and holds a
big part in Norman art. Among the remarkable items, see baptismal
fonts, rood beam, Virgin altar and St Sebastian altar. The pulpit is made
of cameo painted boards, sculpted wood of the 18th century. The village
of Chef du Pont was called « Ste Colombe en Cotentin » until 1350.
SAINT-CÔME-DU-MONT: the Romanesque church
Priory St Come, founded at the end of the 11th century is the unique
dependence of the Cluny Abbey in la Manche. It was used as stage
by monks visiting their owning in Great Britain given after 1066.
The church is composed of a nave with three collateral bays, a
prominent transept, a choir with a sacristy at north side and a
chapel at the south. At the extremity, a semi-circular apse.
The Western facade, the choir’s north wall are remarquable
Romanesque parts.
SAINTE-MARIE-DU-MONT: Church Notre-Dame
This church is one of the most remarkable ones in le Cotentin with its
particular steeple. Its geographical situation gives a global view of “Baie
des Veys” so as from the Bessin coasts until la Hougue. The nave dates from
the 11th century. Composed of 4 bays, it also has capitals (some of them are
recorded). The other parts of the church are from the 14th and 15th centuries.
Listed in 1840.
SAINTE-MÈRE-ÉGLISE: Church Holly Mother of Peace
The ancient part is from the 11th century with the transept and its
massive pillars which hold the steeple. Very interesting in this church:
high altar, eagle lectern...
Two modern stain windows: our Holly Mother of Peace, surrounded
by paratroopers and St Mickael, offered by 505th Régiment of the 82nd
Airborne Veterans. This church became renowned with the movie
“the longest day”. Listed since 1840.
