John Biggs, Mayor of Tower Hamlets
“Four years after the Olympics, we can see that sport in
Tower Hamlets is flourishing. We have a rich sporting
history in Tower Hamlets and have some excellent
facilities for people. Just look at Mile End Stadium, or
the new AstroTurf pitch at John Orwell Sport Centre in
Wapping.
Getting involved in sport and physical activity is really
important. Healthier and happier residents not only
mean less pressure on doctors, hospitals and social
care, but can vastly improve quality of life.
We also see with sport bringing together people from various backgrounds. In a borough
as diverse as Tower Hamlets, that’s an incredible thing, and a valuable thing at that.
Future footballers, Olympians, cricketers, tennis and rugby players could all come from
Tower Hamlets because we have so many pathways into sport. So, with this sport
directory, make sure you take a look at all the activities that are available to you in this
borough, and make the most of it.”

Get involved in sport and physical activity
At Tower Hamlets Council, we want to increase the number of people doing sport and
physical activity. In turn, this will result in an improvement in the health and wellbeing of
our residents. Opportunities to get involved in Tower Hamlets are provided by the many
sports clubs and community organisations here. This directory contains information and
contact details for them. If you are interested in attending any of them, get in touch to
find out when the sessions take place and any costs involved.
Sports and Disability
We strive to support all of the clubs in the
borough, and to help them make sessions
inclusive of disabled people. If you want more
information about disability specific activities
in Tower Hamlets, you can see them on our
website.
Partnerships
We run sport and physical activity projects in
partnership with organisations such as Better,
StreetGames, to provide opportunities for older
people, women & girls, and other disadvantaged
groups. More information on all out activities is
available on our website.
