future, and the struggle for survival against all

Jamie had left her partner Daniel, mourning the
miscarriage of a baby she never wanted. She
needed to get away, so had arranged a posting as a
vet on the planet Soltaire. As she wakes to realise
she has survived a deadly many planets-wide virus,
Jamie’s terrified she might be the only one alive on
this world and that Daniel might not have survived.
So she heads to Soltaire’s port to try and contact
him.
There she meets two others, Lowry and Rena. All
three – for disparate reasons – long to return to
earth, specifically to the Northumbrian coast. They
make contact with Callan Jacobs, the captain of a
trading vessel, and he agrees to take them as far as
the planet Aglaea. But he won’t commit himself to
travelling back to earth. As they pick up other
survivors, tensions rise. Not everyone in the small
band of misfits has the same agenda…
Essentially a novel of love, loss, and second
chances, it’s also an exciting interplanetary roadtrip, as a woman journeys across a plague ravaged
universe to the place she once called home, and the
man she once loved.
Anne Corlett completed her PhD in Creative
Writing tutored by Fay Weldon and Maggie Gee.
She has won awards, and had several short stories
published. This is her first novel.

THE FACE ON THE CUTTING
ROOM FLOOR
Cameron McCabe
With an introduction by Jonathan Coe
.....................................................................................
An extraordinary post-modern detective novel
from an author who remained a mystery for
decades, now relaunched as a Picador Classic
1930s King's Cross, London.
Picador
September 2016
Manuscript available
When aspiring film actress Estella Lamare is found
dead on the cutting-room floor of a London film
studio, Cameron McCabe finds himself at the centre
of a police investigation. There are multiple
suspects, multiple confessors and, as more people
around him die, McCabe begins to perform his own
amateur sleuth-work, followed doggedly by the
mysterious inspector Smith.
But then, abruptly, McCabe's account ends…
Who is Cameron McCabe? Is he victim? Murderer?
Novelist? Joker? And if not McCabe, who is the
author of The Face on the Cutting-Room Floor?
Though The Face on the Cutting-Room Floor was
first published in 1937, the true identity of its
author remained a mystery until 1974 when it was
discovered that the well-known German sexologist,
jazz musician and critic Ernest Borneman was
'Cameron McCabe'. Borneman died in 1995.

Julian Gough
.....................................................................................
A brilliantly and thrillingly smart novel of today
and tomorrow, by one of the most genuinely
original voices in Irish writing
Colt is a teenage boy, the only child of divorced
parents, living in Nevada. For all his brilliance, he is
impossible at school and is being home-schooled
by his mother. Supposedly. His mother is a
biologist, on the verge of a major breakthrough; his
father works for a mysterious government agency
that isn't supposed to exist.
Socially awkward and benignly neglected by his
parents, Colt spends most of his timing living in a
virtual reality gaming world.

Colt is on the spectrum, to say the least. Like most
people who are borderline autistic, Colt tries to
keep his life simple. But when Colt meets a girl
online; when he submits his mother's
breakthrough scientific paper to a conference and
the paper comes to the attention of the
organisation his father works for; when his father
comes to see his own son and ex-wife as threats to
national security, things start to become
complicated. Very complicated indeed...
Julian Gough is author of three previous novels:
Juno & Juliet; Jude in Ireland; and Jude in London. In
2007 he won the largest prize for a single short
story and has twice been shortlisted for the
Everyman Bollinger Wodehouse Prize.

Richard House is an author, film maker, artist and
university lecturer. As well as the Man Bookerlonglisted The Kills, he has written two previous
novels (Bruiser and Uninvited), which were
published by Serpent’s Tail in the 1990s.
Praise for The Kills:
‘Prepare to be dazzled by this monumental novel… a
true achievement.’ - Sunday Times
‘A gigantic experiment, bracing, thrilling and worthy
of a medal for narrative heroism, Richard House’s
four-volume The Kills plays an epic set of variations
on the shadow war for loot and influence behind the
chaos of Iraq.’ - Boyd Tonkin, Independent Books of
the Year
‘A genuine attempt to embrace new possibilities for
the novel form.’ - Metro
‘House writes sharp, poetically exact sentences, and
varies the pace of his writing so moments of stasis
are quickly alleviated by movement. He successfully
manipulates our empathy, making us sicken along
with his characters.’ - The Times Literary
Supplement
‘Let’s call it biz-crime-heist-noir. The Kills is four
interconnected books in one and if you read it on an

THE ALLEGATIONS
Mark Lawson
................................................................................
From the best-selling author of The Deaths, a
hilarious and poignant satire about scandal in
modern Britain
On the morning after he has celebrated his 60th
birthday party at a celebrity-filled party, Ned
Marriott is in bed with his partner, Emma, when
there's a knock on the door. Detectives from the
London police force's 'Operation Millpond' have
come to arrest him over an allegation of sexual
assault.
Picador

By turns shocking and comic, reportorial and
thoughtful, The Allegations startlingly and heartbreakingly captures a contemporary culture in
which allegations are easily made and reputations
casually destroyed. Asking readers to decide who
they believe, it explores a modern nightmare that
could happen, in some way, to anyone whose view
of personal history may differ from someone else's.
Mark Lawson is a novelist and cultural critic. He
has published four novels including Idlewild, Going
Out Live and Enough Is Enough. His work as a
broadcaster includes presenting Radio 4's Front
Row and Foreign Bodies - A History of Crime Fiction
and BBC4's Mark Lawson Talks to… He also writes
for the Guardian and the New Statesman.
Praise for The Deaths:

TRADING FUTURES
Jim Powell

The brilliantly observed and very witty story of
one man's unravelling
This is Matthew Oxenhay at sixty: a stranger to his
wife, an embarrassment to his children, and failed
former contender for the top job at his City firm.
Seizing on his birthday party as an opportunity to
deliver some rather crushing home truths to his
assembled loved ones, it seems as though Matthew
might have hit rock bottom. The truth is, however,
that he has some way to go yet…

The city of Mireea has been destroyed and its
survivors seek shelter, refugees from a great war.
Among them, Zaifyr and his companions arrive at
the gates of Yeflam, seeking asylum. Zaifyr's
immortal status might gain them access - but will
that be enough? And although they are weary
indeed, they also face a bigger threat than lack of
sanctuary. A new child god has entered the world,
and she will do anything to destroy those who
might threaten her power. Zaifyr warns Yeflam of
the danger she poses. But it's too late. Priests of the
new god have entered the city.
Then on the other side of the world, the saboteur
Bueralan returns home. Around his neck he carries
a terrible cargo: the soul of a dead man. He's been
set on a dark path by the child god and he must
face the consequences. For they will change a
whole world.

Many people know how the great texts of the
ancient world had to return to Europe from the
Middle East, where they had been preserved in
collections such as The House of Wisdom. What
they don't know is why they had to leave and then
return in order to spark the European renaissance.
After all, why weren't they held in the great
monastic libraries? And why had so many of the
surviving scrolls (as with a heart-breaking
reference here to a lost work on politics by Cicero)
been overwritten with religious texts?
The Darkening Age is the story of how the forces of
Christianity so comprehensively and deliberately
extinguished the learning and the texts of the
ancient Greeks and Romans that the members of
the Philosophy school in Athens, the inheritors of a
thousand year old tradition, had to flee to Persia,
and of how all over the ancient Roman world books
were burnt, temples were thrown down and pagan
priests were killed or exiled.

The autobiography of Roberto Duran, one of
the greatest boxers of all time
They called him 'Hands of Stone'. In his own words,
and for the first time, Roberto Duran tells his
unbelievable story. From the mean streets of
Panama to the bright lights of Las Vegas, blazing a
trail through the golden decade of boxing, Duran, in
unflinching form, dispels myths and the lays bare
the cost of conquering the world. He also returns to
the debacle that entered sporting folklore during
his rematch with Sugar Ray Leonard, when he

Starting life in abject poverty as the illegitimate son
of a serving US soldier, Duran quickly realized that
his fists could both protect him on the streets and
put food on the table. His reputation in and out of
the ring travelled to the corridors of boxing power
on the day, for a bet, he knocked down a horse with
a single punch.
From his stunning debut in New York to the
glorious defeat of Sugar Ray Leonard, the world
titles and the chaos that ensued after the No Mas
encounter, Duran's explosive life in the ring was
matched only by the volatility outside of it, as he
lurched from kingmaker to bankruptcy, before the
ultimate ending of a bloody comeback and, finally,
redemption.

Walls Come Tumbling Down charts the pivotal
period between 1976 and 1992 that saw politics
and pop music come together for the first time in
Britain's musical history; musicians and their fans
suddenly became instigators of social change, and
'the political persuasion of musicians was as
important as the songs they sang'. Through the
voices of campaigners, musicians, artists and
politicians, Daniel Rachel follows the rise and fall of
three key movements of the time: 'Rock Against
Racism', '2 Tone', and 'Red Wedge', revealing how
they all shaped, and were shaped by, the music of a
generation.
Composed of interviews with over 150 of the key
players at the time, Walls Come Tumbling Down is a
fascinating, polyphonic and authoritative account
of those crucial sixteen years in Britain's history.
Daniel Rachel wrote his first song when he was
sixteen and was the lead-singer in Rachels
Basement, which he formed in his early twenties.
In 2001, he released his debut solo album, A Simple
Twist Of Folk, on Dust Records, followed in 2006 by

Ackroyd takes readers from William of Orange's
accession following the Glorious Revolution to the
Regency, when the flamboyant Prince of Wales
ruled in the stead of his mad father, George III and
England was - again - at war with France, a war
that would end with the defeat of Napoleon at
Waterloo.
The Bank of England was founded, as was the stock
exchange, the Church of England was fully
established as the guardian of the spiritual life of
the nation and Parliament became the sovereign
body of the nation with responsibilities and duties
far beyond those of the monarch. It was a
revolutionary era in English letters, too, a time at
which newspapers first flourished and the English
novel was born. But it was also a time of
extraordinary and unprecedented technological
innovation, which saw England utterly and
irrevocably transformed from a country of blue
skies and farmland to one of soot and steel and
coal.
Peter Ackroyd is an award-winning novelist, as
well as a broadcaster, biographer, poet and
historian. He is the author of more than 40 books.
He holds a CBE for services to literature.

In the 1920s, eugenicists in the UK and America,
quite as much as in Nazi Germany, used IQ tests as
an argument for sterilisation or worse, despite the
fact that IQ tests essentially test whether someone
is good at IQ tests, and no more.
Until very recently, a man's IQ was a red line on
Death Row: you might either be 'too stupid' to be
put to death, or lucky enough to be clever enough...
to be killed. And then there are those extraordinary
savants who, often through sustaining an

GREAT BRITAIN IN COLOUR
Paul Farrell
....................................................................................
A beautifully illustrated journey through the
British Isles by one of the country's top
illustrators
Boxtree
September 2016
Material: May 2016
How do you define Great Britain using shapes and
colours? Paul Farrell wanted to map an illustrated
journey through Britain that took in the ancient
and new, manmade and natural, and brought
together all the elements that made these isles
quintessentially British. The result is Great Britain
in Colour, a tour of the nation through all the small
details and the hidden gems.
In Great Britain in Colour, Farrell tours the country
through the provinces, cities, isles and coastal
edges, and has coloured this land of diverse
extremities. Great Britain is such an eclectic mix of
building styles and advanced engineering that it
lends itself perfect for a diverse palate of colours.
Old traditions die hard with folklore and arts and
craft decorating our everyday life, and much of our
green and pleasant land is unspoilt - a patchwork
of natural features and epic views, all exposed to
our ever-changing weather - a perfect canvas for an
illustrator to work with.
Paul Farrell is a designer and printmaker based in
Bristol. His bold, colourful graphic style is inspired
by nature and an interest in graphic art. Paul is
represented at major art galleries and shops
throughout the UK, including Heal's in London and
Paul Smith in New York.

THE CHRISTMAS DONKEY
Tracy Garton
.................................................................................................
A heart-warming and amusing read about one
lady’s battle to save donkeys, and of Alan the
donkey who because the village’s Christmas
star
Macmillan
Autumn 2016
Manuscript: Summer 2016
Tracy had run for the Radcliffe Donkey Sanctuary
for twenty years and it was a real labour of love.
But after a devastatingly difficult winter with sky
high vet bills and extreme weather, Tracy was
really counting the cost. It was the first week of
January, and she really didn’t know how they’d get
through the year ahead.
Then, the phone rang. A donkey had been
abandoned donkey 130 miles away. Tracy grabbed
the keys to her rickety old horsebox and raced
down to Birmingham where she found Alan forlorn, balding and shivering - tethered up tightly
in a supermarket car park. Riddled with lice and
barely able to walk on his painfully overgrown
hooves, he had been left to die. Suddenly her debts
didn’t seem matter anymore, and the long hours
and aching limbs from running the sanctuary faded
from her mind. Tracy ran her hands gently over
Alan’s protruding ribs, and whispered in his ear:
‘Don’t worry boy, I won’t give up on you.’
As Christmas rolled around, Alan barely resembled
the skinny, shy donkey he was a year before. So,
when Tracy received a desperate call from a
church in the next village begging for a donkey to
complete their nativity play, she knew there was
only one animal for the job - it was Alan’s time to
shine. Tracy’s lovable rogue became the star of the
show, and of the sanctuary. She had given her
donkey the gift of life, and now Alan had given her
the best Christmas present ever… the gift of love
and laughter.

She is touched by the epic two-day journey of a

Meanwhile Clive is almost arrested on a midnight
stakeout to catch a sheep-rustling dog and
becomes the object of affection for a randy young

the Yorkshire Shepherdess is a must for anyone
interested in the countryside and those who farm

The fascinating story of the lives of the
working-class women who looked after the
students of Cambridge University
'As she stood outside the enormous carved wooden

knew the people inside here had all the rights and
the likes of her had none. Some of the students had
taken advantage of girls from the town and got
away with it because their parents were rich or
influential. And now she was about to make their
beds, clean their rooms and lug coal up flights of
stairs to make their fires…'

In the 1950s women like Joyce, Nance and Shirley
lived in some of the poorest streets in Cambridge
and suffered great hardships but every day their
work as servants in the colleges took them into an
extraordinarily privileged world. Known as
'bedders' (short for 'bedmakers'), they often
became close to their charges, mothering them,
covering up for them, sometimes falling in love
with 'their boys', some of whom would go on to
become household names. Revealing their stories
for the first time, this is a vivid, poignant account of
these remarkable women's lives.
Catherine Seymour was born in Barnwell,
Cambridge, and comes from generations of
bedders. Encouraged by her nana, Nance, she
became the first female in her family to attend
university. After a career in television as a
documentary maker, she now teaches drama in
Cambridgeshire.
