U16 Girls Hockey - Midleton College
Next we faced St. Aloysius, Carrigtwohill, twice within 3
weeks. The girls played really well against them and won
the first match 3-0, with Lisa Kenneally, Janet Rumley
and and Sophie O’Keeffe scoring and then the second
match we won 4-0, with Kate Fleming, Angel Axson, Lisa
Kenneally and Janet Rumley scoring in that fixture.
Our league campaign began against Mount Mercy away
on the 24th of January. The girls played very well and ran
out 1-0 winners, with Janet Rumley scoring the only goal.
Our next league match pitted us against Ursuline College,
Blackrock. The girls played well, but were unfortunate to
lose 2-0 on the day.
St. Aloysius provided the opposition on the 20th of
March in the league. Having beaten them twice already
this season, the girls were very confident going into this
one and won comfortably for the third time, this time the
score was 5-0. The goals came from Janet Rumley (2),
Lisa Kenneally, Angel Axson and Kate Fleming.
Our final league match was against Regina Mundi on the
18th of April at home. The girls fought really hard and
played to their best, best they couldn’t overturn a very
good Regina side, as they won out 3-0 against us.
Thus our season came to an end. I would like to thank
all the girls for their commitment to the team and for
all the fun, enjoyment and good times we had together
throughout the year.

U16 Girls Hockey
It was a slow start to the season for the U16 girls team.
Two nil all draws were played out against Kilkenny
College, both home and away. The third match was a very
tough game against Sacred Heart School, Clonakilty. We
lost 5-2, but managed to find a couple of goals and played
better hockey throughout the match.
The league was where our best hockey was where we came
into our own, the goals started rolling in and we started
winning the games we deserved to. Colaiste Mhuire, Cobh
were our first opponents in the league, with a four nil win
being the end result. Loreto Fermoy were next up in the
league and after a hard battle we were very unfortunate to
come out on the wrong end of a 1-0 scoreline.
Our next match was a tough encounter with Crosshaven.
For this match we were missing four of our regular players
so had to draft in second years to have a full team (Thanks
to Amy Chambers, Maeve Kingston and Keziah Ottman for
stepping in and helping out!). It was an end to end game
and we managed to get the breakthrough through a goal
from Richenda Thomas, and that was how the match
ended. St Aloysius were the next opposition and we
scored twice through Anna Hevers and Vivienne O’Hara,
keeping a clean sheet and ending the match 2-0 victors.
Next was our first cup game, where we were unfortunate
to be drawn against Loreto Fermoy again. We went into
the game nervous but determined to get our revenge for
the loss in the league. We fought hard until a few minutes
from the end where we conceded a heartbreaking goal,
continued to press for the equalizer, but unfortunately
ran out of time and lost 1-0. We had to pick ourselves
up for the final league game of the season against Ard
Scoil na Deise, Dungarvan. We started well, with Alex
Aldous scoring twice, Vivienne O’Hara, Clara Roch-Perks,
Richenda Thomas and Bryony Archer getting a goal each
resulting in a 6-0 win, to end our season on a high. We
finished the year out as South Munster league Champions,
hoping to play the North Munster winners, but running out
of time with Junior Certificate commitments.
The team was capably led by Ella Compton throughout
the season, with Reidin O’Sullivan, twins Bryony and Katie
Archer, Clara Roch-Perks and Richenda Thomas playing
very well throughout the season. I thoroughly enjoyed
the season, they were a very entertaining group to train
and work with and I wish them all the very best for their
continued hockey careers.

As it was my first year coaching the girls, the first few
weeks were about getting to know them and finding out
where they liked to play. I quickly realised that this group
were particularly close and this helped them hugely
throughout the season on the pitch. Amy Chambers was
named as captain and Julie Ryall as vice captain for the
upcoming season and they were fantastic role models
and leaders for the squad all year, putting in a series of
excellent performances.
The season began with the girls in very high spirits
our traditional first fixture against Kilkenny away on
September 5th. We ran out comfortable 4-0 winners,
with Julie Ryall (2), Amy Chambers and Maeve Kingston
scoring. Two weeks later, we played Kilkenny again on the
19th of September, this time at home. They clearly brought
down a stronger side to the one we played previously, but
we still managed to win 2-0, with goals from Julie Ryall
and Laura O’Riordan.
Our next match wasn’t until the 17th of October, when we
played our first league match against Bandon. Including
a Julie Ryall hat trick, the girls emerged victorious on the
day with a fine 4-0 win, Charlotte Hall with the other goal.
Our attention next turned to Mount Mercy in the league,
on a cold evening in Cork City on the 7th of November.
Another superb performance by the girls was to follow
with a 6-2 win, including another Julie Ryall hat trick!
Maeve Kingston, Amy Chambers and Charlotte Hall
completing the scoring.
So it appeared that girls were really gathering steam
with 4 wins on the bounce. This concluded our matches
before Christmas. However, after Christmas, the girls
continued on great form. Our good run was to continue
into our next match on the 16th of January, which was our
first cup match against Bandon away. Another brilliant
performance and result was shown by the team and they
ran out convincing 3-0 winners, Julie Ryall, Charlotte Hall
and Laura O’Riordan the goal scorers on the day.
So the u15 juggernaut kept on rolling. Our next fixture was
in the cup again just a week later against Regina Mundi
at home on the 23rd of January. A thoroughly professional
performance from the girls gave us victory on a score line
of 2-0. Who else but the goal machine Julie Ryall with
both goals! A week later, it was a case of the same time,
same place, same opposition, but in the league this time.
The girls used their knowledge of their opposition from
the previous week to record a 4-0 win this time, Julie Ryall
again scoring twice, with Maeve Kingston and Charlotte
Hall adding to their tallies also.
Our next match was on the 20th of February at home to
Coláiste Cholm in the league. This was not the girls’ best
performance of the season, as they played far below their
capabilities on the day. However, they did show good
resolve to salvage a 2-2 draw and therefore win their
section of the league, which was fantastic!
Our season wasn’t finished there as we still had to finish
out the cup. Clonakilty provided the opposition in the semifinal. Another classy performance ensured that the girls
won 3-0, with the goals coming from Maeve Kingston,
Julie Ryall and Charlotte Hall.
Our last fixture of the season came against Rockwell in
the cup final in Rockwell. Home advantage clearly gave
Rockwell a significantly improved chance of winning.
Which combined with illness and injuries meant a
depleted squad played that day and we lost, which was a
crying shame, given how well we played all year, scoring
freely and beating almost every team we encountered.
However, it was still a hugely successful season, winning
our section in the league and being runners up in the cup,
is no mean feat. I would like to take this opportunity to
thank each and every one of the girls for their commitment
to training rain, hail or shine (despite moaning about it!),
congratulate them on playing some terrific hockey and of
course doing so well in both league and cup.

The 2012/2013 U14 girls hockey team were a very
enthusiastic group of players. Throughout the hockey
season they played with great positivity and commitment.
The side was captained by Patricia Axson and she led by
example in each game.
Niamh Power took on the role of goalkeeper and showed
great ability and bravery as she guarded the net in each
game. In defence Katie Mariga, Victoria Hosford, Mary
Smiddy, Charley Moore and Róisín Maloney worked very
hard each day with their excellent tackling and strong
work ethic. Mary in particular brought great relief to our
defence with her lengthy clearances.
Our midfield line of Bryna Heffernan, Rebekah
Oppermann, Rachel Martin and Patricia Axson worked
tirelessly throughout each game and always put huge
pressure on the opposition. Our forwards, Daisy Cardosa
Murphy, Diane Pope, Ella Roch Perks, Susan Moran and
Alice Tierney all played vital roles in our games during the
year. Daisy and Patricia were our main goal scorers and
finished well in front of goal on a number of occasions.
We had a tough league campaign and had some very
close encounters during the year. We met Mount Mercy
in the first round of the cup and the girls played very well
on this occasion. We were unlucky not to score and the
game went to a replay thanks to some great tackling by
our solid defence line. We travelled to Mount Mercy for
the replay and again the game ended in a 1-1 draw which
led to extra time. Here unfortunately we lost 3-1. Some of
the girls were complete beginners and made significant
progress during the year. Thanks to all the girls for your
commitment to training throughout the year and best
wishes for the season ahead.

The U14 B team of 2012/2013 worked very well together as
a team. They always worked hard at training, while having
fun at the same time - rain, hail, shine...and even snow.
The team was captained by Gabrielle Humphreys who
always had an encouraging word for her team members.
Our brave goalie was Ómaí Ransome who had a natural
talent and made some great saves. With her in defence
was Alice O’Donnell, Laura Byron, Katherine Hartnett
Cronin, Andrea Perea, and Amy Anthony, who all made
strong clearances during the matches.
In midfield, were Madeleine Tanner, Benedicta Alapini,
Gabrielle Humphreys, Laura O’Keeffe, Caoimhe Madden,
Katen Duffy work worked well with the front line, Gwen
O’Donovan, Lara Summers, Sophie Doherty, Cassie Finn,
Hannah Duffy, Katelyn Manning, and Niamh Power, who
had some of their runs hitting the mark cumulating in a goal.
The girls all progressed in their abilities throughout the
year. We had many friendly matches against Bandon
Grammar, Kilkenny College and even Dulwich, a touring
side from England which was a good experience for
the whole team. We were unlucky to be beaten 2-1 by
Regina Mundi in the cup match. We came back and
drew against them in a league match soon after. We beat
Carrigtwohill 1-0, which showed how far the girls came
as a team throughout the year. Both goals we scored by
Hannah Duffy, who was our top goal scorer of the year.
Good luck to all of the team in their future hockey careers!

The beginning of this season saw a changing of the guard
and changes in our ranks and fortunes.
Taking over as coach of the Senior Boys Hockey Team
from Ivan Leopold, who reigned for 31 years, was always
going to be a hard act to follow but a challenge I was
happy to accept.
The season started with a friendly against Kilkenny with only
6 of last year’s panel still in the school we fielded a relatively
new team. We had a good result, winning 3 – 2. the goals
coming from Declan Murphy, Alan Sheehy (new to the team
from U14’s the previous year) and Andrew McGregor. Our
next match was against Bandon in a friendly, which was also
preparation for the Irish Schools Qualifiers. Unfortunately
we lost 4 – 0 and had a couple of injuries.
Wednesday 26th September was Irish School Qualifiers.
We played our first match against Bandon Grammar
loosing 2 – 1 and followed on with a 0 – 0 against Villiers,
leaving us playing Ashton in our last match, with Villiers
playing Bandon, both matches taking place at the same
time. Although we played our best game drawing 0 – 0,
we did not qualify for the Inter-schools Tournament. I
wish to thank Danny Mulligan and Ms Catriona Hassey
for all their work on that day as unfortunately I could not
be there due to family commitments, which hopefully he
will repay in 15 years time!
Our next match was against Ashton in the league, we
played some excellent hockey drawing 1 – 1 until a late
goal by Ashton saw them take all the points. We then
played a UCC selection in a friendly, winning 3 – 1 with
goals from Declan Murphy 2 and Alan Sheehy 1. Our
last match before Christmas resulted in a 6 – 0 win with
Declan Murphy 2, Alan Sheehy 1, Andrew McGregor 1, A
Burns 1 on the score sheet.
After Christmas we travelled to Villiers in the league,
resulting in a 2 – 2 draw which was good preparation for
our Cup quarter final against Ashton school.
We played some excellent hockey throughout the first half
and hit the post from a short corner right on half time. We
were well in the game until an Ashton goal ten minutes
into the second half forced us to push for a goal which
left us exposed and we were caught out a couple of times
eventually loosing 6 – 0 which was not a just score-line.

Our last match of the season was against a touring side
from Newpark School Dublin with a strong performance
by us, drawing 1 – 1.
I wish to thank John McEvoy for his work on the field as
captain and for his 6 years of Midleton College hockey
and also to Max Von Der Heidt for his effort during
the year and congratulations to both on their leaving
certificate results.
At representative level I wish to congratulate Dan Moore
who played Munster U18 in goals and received an Irish
trial and also played Munster U21 that year.
Also to Owen Chambers, Andrew McGregor, Rob
Johnston and Alex Burns who played Munster U18.
Jack Ryan, Declan Murphy and Alex Deane on Munster
U16 and Jack Ryan and Alex Deane training with the
Irish U16 squad for most of the season but unfortunately
didn’t make the final cut.
On a promising note I wish to congratulate Alex Burns
who was selected for the Irish U18’s Hockey Team in his
1st year out of Irish U16’s. Well done. Alex’s work rate
and maturity on the pitch earned him the Senior Hockey
Cup. Well done to all of the senior boys who played at
both A and B level during the year.
May I thank Catriona Hassey, Liz Clifford, Danny Mulligan,
Paudie Hartnett and Paula Stead for their assistance
throughout the year.

2012/2013 was a mixed season for our Senior B team
which saw the team improve greatly as the campaign
went on. The season began with a disappointing 2-0
defeat to Ashton. A week later we recorded a 2-2 draw
with Kilkenny College with goals from Bryan Moore and
Stephen Dallas and also saw a marked improvement in
form from the entire team. This was excellent preparation
for our first league match, another visit to Ashton. Ashton
were shocked by an early goal from Paul Kingston that put
them on the back foot. The game continued with periods
of sustained pressure on the Ashton goal, however
they managed to sneak in an equaliser late in the game
setting up a nervy ending to what had been an otherwise
comfortable match, leading to a 1-1 draw.
Our next game was yet another trip to Ashton to play in
the semi-final of the Cup. An excellent performance by
the entire team saw us go into half time with a 3-0 lead.
Bryan Moore, departing from his usual business on the
rugby field finished two goals superbly and Alan Sheehy
added the third. The second half saw us lapse and lose
concentration allowing Ashton to hit back with two goals
within ten minutes of the restart. Having received our
wakeup call and with minds refocused our Captain, Billy
McCarthy led an outstanding defensive performance
which saw Ashton’s forays into our 25 consistently
frustrated. The game finished in a hard fought 3-2 win,
setting up the season’s final fixture, the Cup Final, against
a strong Villiers team.
The day of the final brought a long trip to Villiers in Limerick
and a visibly tired team stepped off the bus. This showed in
the first half as Villiers scored one and scrambled another
across the line, sending us into half time with a two goal
deficit. During the break, an inspirational team talk sent
us back out with a newfound energy and it showed as the
game was turned around and we threatened the Villiers
goal time and time again, seeing several shots go narrowly
wide and one skimming the post. Cormac O’Sullivan was a
rock at the back, dictating the pace of play and providing
a level head in times of pressure. As the half wore on
however, it seemed it was going to be one of those days
where nothing was going to go our way despite all our
efforts. This seemed to be confirmed when Daniel Moore,
ably playing at left back was halted in his run of the pitch
by a tackle which saw the ball deflect straight upwards,
splitting his chin, requiring a substitution and later, five
stitches. Remarkably, our only injury of the season. The
game ended in a disappointing loss however it was
good to see such fight from all members of the squad, a
characteristic of many Midleton teams.
It was with great enthusiasm that I watched our Midleton
team grow and develop as individuals and a unit over the
year. The many hard fought matches will stand them in good
stead and I look forward to the coming season with great
optimism as no doubt they will return stronger than before.

Our U16A Boys team were made up of players from Senior
A and B as they were quite young. Because of this they
only ended up playing two matches with the first match
resulting in a 4 – 0 win against Kilkenny College, with
goals from F Roche 1, D Murphy 2 and A Burns 1.
We played our cup match after Christmas with quarterfinal game due to be played in Midleton. Due to extreme
weather conditions the match didn’t go ahead and we
had to travel to Bandon. After a close encounter with it
being all level at 1 – 1 with a goal from Declan Murphy, the
game went into extra time which also resulted in a stale-
mate. It then went down to a penalty stroke competition
which unfortunately we lost 4 – 3 and Bandon Grammar
advanced to the semi-final.
U16 Player of the Year was Alex Deane who played for
Munster U16’s and trained with an Irish Training Panel.

Last season proved to be somewhat hectic as 34 different
players took to the field at various stages to represent
Midleton College. We managed to field 2 teams and played
a total of 14 games, the A team competed in both League
and Cup and where possible B games were played to tie
in with these fixtures.
It was a slow start to the season, as a combined Second
Year team played Kilkenny College and lost 3-0. Several
First Year players were introduced to the A squad and
the team took their time to gel together, losing 3-1 in a
friendly to Ashton. Things started to look up after a
narrow defeat to Bandon in the League (1-0), followed by
a draw against Ashton (3-3) and a win against Villiers (40). A fruitful visit was made to Kilkenny, where we came
away victorious (7-1); this was to serve as a warm-up for
the Cup competition.
The long trip was made to Limerick for the cup game
against Villiers and much narrower victory (2-1) was
obtained than on our previous visit. We got a home draw
for the semi-final of the cup and played Ashton in a tense
game. We found it difficult at times to deal with a more
physical style of play and although the team fought hard
they were narrowly defeated (2-1).

1st year hockey had a good 22 boys training each session
for the first few weeks of the season. We brought two
teams of mixed ability to Newtown School Waterford
with Team 1 winning 1 – 0 the goal from Conor Walsh and
Team 2 winning 3 – 1 with goals from Nathan lynch, Jack
Northridge and Harry Compton.
On September 27th we brought three, 6 a-side teams to
Bandon playing 15 matches winning 12, drawing 2 and
loosing 1, a good return for the day. On October 10th we
played Bandon in two 11 a-side games. Team A won 1 – 0
with the goal from the captain, Jack Northridge. Team B
also won 1 -0 with a goal from Harry Cremin- Mehmet. On
24th October we travelled to Kilkenny and after a close
encounter we lost 1 – 0, we were without 8 of our players
who were now in U14A squad.
On Wednesday 28th November we played two 8 a-side
half pitch matches in a tournament run by Irish Hockey in
Garryduff Sports Centre. With 8 matches in total we won
6, drew 1 and lost 1. Thanks to Phil Oakley the Munster
Regional Development Officer who ran the event for the
first time with Schools Hockey and we looked forward to
a cup and plate competition after Christmas.
After the Christmas break we travelled to Villiers School
Limerick and played without our U14 players. Some good
hockey was played by both teams and we eventually lost
2 – 1, our goal scored by Conor Walsh.
Moloney 1. 30th January we played Villiers again loosing
3 – 0 at B level. 5th March was our next 11 a-side game
at home to Ashton, after a good performance we won 3 –
1, scorers were Jack Northridge 1, Andrew Ryan 1, and
Conor Walsh 1.
We thought that this was the end of the season until we
were informed that Munster Hockey were to run an A
Cup 8 a-side Tournament and a Plate Competition in May.
The venues were Garryduff Sports Centre and Harlequins
Hockey Club. We entered a team in both competitions.
The A team won the cup without losing a match. Well
done Conor Walsh (8 a-side capt) to you and the panel.
Not long after that victory we got a phone call to tell us
that our B team had won the Plate final, winning 4 matches
and drawing 1. Well done to that panel of players also.
Finally may I thank all those involved in coaching 1st Year
Boys Hockey, Mr Mulligan and Ms Clifford. I hope we will
continue to enjoy such great success.

This year we are participating in the Cork School Girls
Junior Soccer League. Results so far this autumn have
seen us draw 1-1 with Colaiste Mhurie Crosshaven whilst
also recording victories against St. Brogans Bandon 6-0
and St. Mary’s Mallow 4-3. This particular junior team
consists of Form I and II girls only and is captained by
Charlie Moore with Katie Mariga as vice captain. This very
enthusiastic bunch of players has so far seen some fine
goal scoring performances from Shirley Bailey and bryna
Heffernan in particular. We have five more games to go in
our league campaign and are very optimistic of achieving
positive results. Our senior league will commence after
Christmas and will consist of six games.
Allied to our league competition we also participate in the
FAI youth development blitz’s which are staged each term
for both Junior and Senior age groups, the purpose being
to develop the skills of the players involved. This autumn
has also seen the introduction of Mr. Jason Brown to our
coaching staff and the expansion of our training session
to include both Tuesday and Friday afternoons. Mr. Brown
brings a wealth of experience in this area, with beneficial
results already being seen in terms of numbers of girls
participating in training and solid performances being
produced on the field of play.
Onwards and upwards we go!

We started the year off with two sessions at Hydes’
Equestrian Centre in Glanmire in preparation for the first
competition of the season. This event was held at the
Ballinamona Equestrian Centre Co. Waterford. A team of
4 riders: Robert Stafford, Mary Smiddy, Alanna O’Sullivan
and Max White competed. Rob knocked one pole in the
1st round but had a lovely clear in round 2. Mary was
next to jump and had a fantastic double clear. Alanna had
a few poles down, going out third, and Max finished off
with one fence down in both rounds.
After Christmas we regrouped and were put through
our paces with Corrine at Hydes in Glanmire. Our next
competition was the Inter-schools show-jumping at
Ballyrafter Lismore Co. Waterford, in January. We had
two teams: Team 1 with Naimh McCormack, Padraig
Fives and George Hennessy coming very close qualifying
for the jump off achieving some fantastic clear rounds.
Our second team of Niamh Moore, Rob Stafford and Max
White also did well with Rob having a lovely double clear.
In March Clara Roch-Perks and Fionn Summers competed
in the All Ireland Inter-schools Hunter Trials in Co Wexford
at Senior Level and Ella Roch-Perks at Junior Level.
All three riders did very well in what was an extremely
challenging course.
Outside of school competitions students were busy with
their own pursuits and special mention and congratulations
to Padraig Fives who represented Ireland in Wales in the
Tetrathlon event, Team Ireland were placed 3rd. And to
Rob Stafford who competed in Tattersalls with the United
Pony Club.
Many thanks to parents and guardians for their help and
support throughout the year.

Tennis 2012-2013
This summer competition was a very busy time in the world
of tennis for our internal competitions. The competition was
played at three different age groups for boys and two age
groups for girls. Most of the competition matches were held
on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons with some
interesting surprises and assumed certainties. Results of the
competitions are as follows;

Orienteering
The 2012-2013 orienteering year was quieter than normal
this year due to some clashes with other sporting fixtures
and cancellations due to weather conditions. However
as always our enthusiastic athletes headed out in all
types of weather to many areas across cork.
Early
in the season we headed to Tramore Amenity Park
followed in November by the Cork School’s Orienteering
Championships held in Fota. Our athletes once again
did us proud with Kieran Simpson, Sinead James, Zac
O’Sullivan-Hourihan, Bryony Archer and Charley Moore
85
MidletonColMag2013.indd 85
07/12/2013 19:23
all securing 1st place in their individual categories. On
the day our 1st Year Boys, 1st Year Girls, 2nd/3rd Year
Boys, 2nd/3rd Year Girls and Senior Boys all secured first
team placings. A fixture in Doneraile had to be cancelled
due very high and dangerous winds.
To round off the year and make up for missing out on
some fixtures the College held its own Orienteering Cup
Challenge in May. Midleton College students descended
on Curragh Woods to compete for the Junior and Senior
Cups. The course was planned and controlled by
Mr. Liam O’Brien of Cork Orienteering Club and Paul
O’Sullivan-Hourihan (Bishopstown Orienteering Club). A
well planned tricky course put our runners through their
paces and on the day Sinead James and Anthony O’Shea
were victorious at senior level while Bryony Archer and
Zac O’Sullivan-Hourihan took the cups at junior level.
Outside of school Zac O’Sullivan Hourihan (Form 3)
represented Ireland for the first time at U18 in the Junior
Home International Orienteering Competition held in
Wales in September. October saw him win the Munster
Orienteering Championships followed in November by a trip
to the Lake District to train with the U16 Team GB athletes.
As always Midleton College is proud of our past
pupils achievements.
This summer two former
pupils represented Ireland at the World Orienteering
Championships in Vuokatti, Finland near the Arctic
Circle. To put this in context the Irish mens team was
made up of 6 athletes from the 32 counties! For Josh
O’Sullivan-Hourihan (Class of 2011) it was his first senior
World Championship competing in the Sprint discipline
and he finished a respectable 24th in his semi final. Nick
Simonin (Class of 2008) who is based in Sweden has
previous World Championship experience and this year
finished 13th in his heat and 33rd in the Long Distance
Final. He just missed out by seconds in qualifying for the
Middle Distance Final.
Finally, Ms. Liz Clifford who, for so many years has
organised and escorted many groups of College
students to and from events, has taken on a different
role in the College and doesn’t have the flexibility to
actively participate anymore. We are all grateful for
her willingness to stand in cold, wet, muddy forests on
freezing winter days to organise our orienteerers! From
all of us Thank You.
- ROS-H
On a personal note as I step away from involvement
in orienteering, I would like to give one last big thanks
to Rosemarie and Paul, for all their help and support
over the years. Without both their efforts the sport
of orienteering wouldn’t have achieved the level of
success it has done in Midleton College. I say goodbye
to orienteering knowing it is in safe hands!

07/12/2013 19:23
It was another busy summer term of athletics, with
athletes competing in the Interschools, South Munster
competition and our own internal schools athletics
championships . For the Interschools competition, held
in CIT once again this year, unfortunately although our
younger age groups were competitive in each event, we
were unable to call on some of our better senior athletes
due to exam pressures. We had a major success on the
day with Andrew Ryan equalling the record for the junior
200m, our first record in the books since returning to the
Interschools athletics competition a number of years ago.
A very enjoyable day was had by all at ther event.
Our own internal schools championships brought nine
new records, three of those going to Andrew Ryan in first
year in the 100m, 200m and long jump. The U13 boys high
jump record was beaten by Padraig Fives. Records were
also broken in the senior girls competition by Fi Power
in the 100m and 200m, and by Sinead James in the long
jump. The U13 girls competition brought new records
for Charley Moore in the 100m and Susan Moran in the
high jump. Well done to all the athletes who took part in
competitions, but especially those who broke records,
hopefully this bodes well for our level of success in future
Interschools competitions.
Thanks to all the members of staff who helped out with
coaching the various track and field events throughout
the summer term, supervised at the Interschools athletics
and helped out with the organisation and running of our
own athletics championships.

Chess
L-R: Mr. Hickey, O. Parsons, K. Carew, A. Cowhig, J. Cowhig, J. Swanton, P. O’Shea, Mr. Thompson.
The season began slowly this year as we had lost some
experienced players and had to ascertain what kind of
teams we could field. We held weekly practice sessions
throughout the first term and in January decided to enter
three teams into competition.
We entered a Novices team and a Champions team
into the ChessZ Secondary Schools League and one
senior team into the Secondary Checkmate League. We
began by playing Colaiste an Spioraid Naoimh’s C team
in Midleton in February. Our Novices team consisting of
Paddy O’Shea, Oisin Parsons, Adam Nuzum and Gareth
Hosford emerged from the match with a 2-2 draw.
Later in the month our Champions team hosted Clonakilty
CBS and we recorded a 3-1 victory , our team was Jack
Cowhig, Jeffrey Swanton, Kevin Carew and Adrian
Cowhig. Then in mid-April both of our teams were away
to play matches against Rochestown College. The
Champions team drew 2-2 with Jack and Kevin winning
on boards 1 and 3 and the Novices also drew 2-2 with
Paddy and Gareth winning on boards 1 and 4. This lead
to the elimination of our Novices but our Champions team
were through to a place in the League finals.
The ChessZ finals took place in Limerick at the end of April
and our team of Jack, Jeffrey, Kevin and Adrian set off with
high hopes. However our optimism was wildly misplaced
as we came up against schools from all over Ireland that
played chess of the highest caliber. We played 6 games
over the course of the day but gained few points overall.
Adrian Cowhig was our highest scorer with 2.5 points
for two wins and a stalemate. In the final placings we
came 16th out of 21 teams! This was a salutary lesson as
to what happens to the big fish when he leaves his small
pool and goes up against an entire sea of opponents.
87
MidletonColMag2013.indd 87
07/12/2013 19:23
Our senior team in the Secondary Checkmate League was
the familiar line up of Jack, Jeffrey, Kevin and Adrian.
They played a match away against Charleville CBS B
team in March. It resulted in a 3-1 win for Charleville. Our
next match should have been against Bandon Grammar
but with timing issues and commitments elsewhere, plus
exams looming in May we never played it. Statistically we
could not have gone through to the finals so it was best to
cut our losses.
Finally in May we held our internal school competition.
In the senior category Jack Cowhig won by the simple
expedient of being unopposed (nobody entered against
him!). In the junior section there was more lively
competition and even some of the favourites were
knocked out before the final. Adrian Cowhig won it with
Adam Nuzum as the runner-up.
My thanks to all who participated in chess this season
and we look forward to next year with interest!

Mr. Thompson. Front Row L-R: L. Deane, J. McAvoy, O. Ind, A. McGregor.
The cricket season is a short one, just 4 weeks long.
However, the pupils and I began training before the Easter
holidays in an effort to extend the season. There was a
massive turnout from each of the three junior years,
especially first year, which is very encouraging for the
years to come. Due to the large numbers, training had to
be split into juniors and seniors twice a week.
The standard of bowling, batting and all round play was
superb from all concerned, as they all trained very hard.
We were unfortunately not able to organize any junior
matches against other schools, but we did manage an
inter class match for the juniors, with Harry Deane, Jack
Northridge, Dion Cuthbert Zac O’Sullivan-Hourihan and
Harry Cremin-Mehmet playing particularly well.
The senior team did manage 3 matches. Oliver Ind
was named the first XI captain for the year and he led
by example and tactical nouse right throughout our 3
matches, ably assisted by John McEvoy and Luke Deane.
Our first match was against Bandon at home. They batted
first and made 99 all out. A target we were confident of
chasing down. Alas, the Bandon bowling attack proved
too strong for us and we ended up an agonizing 7 runs
short on 92 all out. John McEvoy and Oliver Ind were the
pick of the bowlers and Andrew McGregor the pick of the
batsmen that day.
Our second match was against De la Salle, Waterford a
week later. They made 74 all out and we chased down
their target with 6 overs to spare with a very convincing
performance this time around. John McEvoy, Harry
Deane and Andrew McGregor doing the damage with ball
in hand this time around and Luke Deane, Oliver Ind and
Zac O’Sullivan-Hourihan doing the damage with the bat.
Our final match was against Bandon, again, at home the
following week. The boys were clearly out for revenge
from the defeat two weeks previous and played extremely
well, limiting Bandon to just 82 this time around. In a very
well constructed innings, we got there with just 3 balls to
spare in a very tightly and keenly contested match. Again,
John McEvoy, Harry Deane, Ciarán McGregor, Oliver Ind
and Andrew McGregor were the stand out bowlers and
the latter, Alex Deane and Brandon McEvoy grabbing the
lions share of the runs with the bat.

REPRESENTATIVE HONOURS
I would like to thank each and every one of the pupils for
their dedication, commitment and keenness to play and
train so hard this year. The numbers we had out this year
were simply fantastic and it truly does bode well for the
sport in Midleton College in the future. I would also like
to thank Mr. Kurt Livingston for all of his help coaching,
umpiring and scoring this year also.

Senior Golf
Numerous golf outings took place
during the last school year. The school
summer golf competition took place in
May at East Cork Golf Club. A busload
of students left the school after lunch
and spent the afternoon competing
against each other on the course. Ms.
Guest, Ms. Power, and Ms. Dennehy
also played a round, heading out with
a few different groups of students.
Ed Hayes emerged the winner of this
year’s competition while David Poynton
received the award of the Leonard
O’Mahony trophy which acknowledged
his contribution to school golf during
his six years of study.

MIDLETON COLLEGE GOLF SOCIETY
This year we were down to five events. The July date was
dropped as it fell right in the middle of everyones holidays.
The average attendance in the events was nineteen.
We are told at each course that this is a good average
and that numbers are down in many societies. Here’s to
maintaining this figure or even improving on it in 2014.

This season was when one of our young bloods made
a great break through. Greg Chambers won two of the
events and was positioned at the head of the field coming
into the final event of the year in Fota. Unfortunately this
date clashed with a hockey fixture that Greg was due to
play in with UCC. The much anticipated head to head with
Rory O’Neill never materialised. The course was in great
condition and it was a beautiful hot autumn day. This led
to impressive scoring with Gordon winning with 39 points.
Eyes on the prize!
The day was not without its controversy however. There
was some confusion over Rory’s and Keith’s ball on
the sixteenth. A life long friendship could have been in
jeopardy had the two dropped points suffered by Rory cost
him the Player of the Year competition! As it happened
Rory had a couple of points to spare and emerged as
winner once again.
It turned out to be a father son combination for the remaining
two prizes in the order of merit. Greg secured the runner up
spot in the Player of the Year while his dad Keith won the
Junior category. Well done to the Chambers family.
We will be back for the new season in April in Water
Rock. If you are interested in participation please contact
the College and ask to talk to Ray Power.

Midleton College Parent Teacher Association Notes
Midleton College PTA enjoyed a full Calendar of events in
2013.
January began by a study skills seminar.
Midleton College continue to have strong links with
COMPASS (a statutory body representing Parents
association in Protestant and Minoritory Religious schools
at secondary school level). Parents Nora Irwin and Brownen
Lynch are executive members of COMPASS. Two members
of the Midleton PTA , Grainne Keating and Mandy Devlin
attended the Compass AGM in Kilkenny. They had the
opportunity to meet COMPASS members from round the
country.
Spring Fest was held in March. The PTA hosted a Spring
Festival in the school dining hall. It was an opportunity for
students to demonstrate extra talents. There was a baking
competition ‘Bake Off’, a photographic competition and a
literary competition and keen talent was shown by all who
entered. There was enthusiastic participation and parents
helped with generous donations of cakes and produce to
sell. Winners of the photographic competition were awarded
a one day photographic workshop with Gordon Kinsella
held in the college. It was an enjoyable day. Many thanks
to Mary Linehan without whose help the competition could
not have been run.
Sam Rothman a world renowned pianist generously gave
his time and performance in April in Midleton College in
aid of Midleton Sports Complex and those in attendance
were enthralled by his performance.
Another excellent Careers day was organised by Guidance
Counsellor, Mariel Twomey . The PTA assisted on the day.
Mariel invited a range of professionals to speak with the
4th and 5th form students. It was an intensive day which
focused on 10 minute briefs from each professional exposing
students to many careers in one day. The students also had
input into the selection of the professionals to be invited.
The PTA Social evening was a culinary delight for all those
in attendance. Chef Stuart Bowes, Barnabrow House treated
us to a feast of food sourced in Barnabrow and East Cork.
He created unique courses from ingredients of Barnabrow
House starting with a food -to -share starter, followed by
a choice of beef or O’Connells seabass, finished off by a
mouth watering lemon tart served by Barnabrow staff.
Thanks also to Rory Graham and his team for their help
with the night.
Transition Year award night parent prizes were awarded to
students who made an outstanding contribution in transition
year.
Sports Day was a magnificent sunny day as usual! It marks
the end of the school year and heralds the start of the Summer.
There was a great participation by parents, students and
teachers on the day. Including the PTA 34 parents/guardians
volunteered on the day prepping strawberries, manning the
strawberry stall, produce stall and uniform sale. The sports
events were fun and the highlight continues to be the hog
roast and lunch organised by Rory Graham.
The AGM was held on the 24th September followed by
a talk given by Dr Fergus Heffernan a renowned clinical
psychologist and psychotherapist. He is also a leading
educator in the area of stress management. Dr Fergus
Heffernan gave an outstanding talk on the well being of
teenagers to 5th and 6th form in the afternoon and to parents
in the evening. He delivered an inspired talk and a large
cohort of parents were actively encouraged to attend by their
children who had heard him earlier. His talk also facilitated
open family discussions following the event.
The AGM committee was thanked by Mr Thompson. He
especially thanked the outgoing officers Grainne Keating,
Mandy Devlin and Liz Deane who are stepping down from
their Officer positions. They have served for a number of
years on the PTA and have ensured that the PTA remains
an integral part of the college. Grainne will remain on the
committee as an ex officio.
The PTA also helped out providing refreshments during the
Hockey Blitz in October, a very successful fundraiser for
the Sports complex.
As the year draws to a close we look forward to the Carol
Service and carol service reception marking the beginning
of the festive season.
On behalf of the PTA I would like to thank the teaching
staff, the house keeping staff, the office staff, Rory Graham
and his team and not least Mr Thompson for their continued
support in the work of the PTA. . Each parent is a member of
the PTA and we appreciate your ongoing support and your
help with events and look forward to your continued support
in 2014.
Catherine O’Riordan
Chairperson Midleton College PTA
The PTA committee for 2013- 2014 are as follows;
Catherine O’Riordan - Chairperson, Nicola Bessell Honorary Secretary, Deirdre Cremin - Honorary Treasurer,
Andy Compton - Parent, Anne Fuller Hales - Parent, Aoife
Parsons - Parent, Bairbre Keating - Parent, Grainne Keating
- Parent, Simon Thompson - Principal, Brigid O’ Riordan Teacher, Mariel Twomey - Teacher, Niamh Lawlor - Teacher.
The Governors reception is a very joyous affair. The
6th form students transformed from school uniforms into
glamorous young adults on the night. The PTA hosted and
sponsored a reception for parents and guardians on the
night. Rory Graham’s finger food was both delicious and
memorable.

Midleton College Association President’s Report 2013
Greetings past pupils and interested readers to another
report on the Midleton College Association. It is Sunday
the 17th of November and this article was due in last Friday.
Apologies to Brian Hickey and the staff at the magazine
and I promise it will not happen again.
in itself. We will all look forward to that evening in October.
Well done to John Waterman, Ollie Daly, Caroline Buttimer
and Andrew Levis for helping to organise their respective
year groups. Thank you to the Reverend Wayne Massey for
keeping with tradition and saying grace on the night.
I was encouraged recently by a number of calls from old
Midletonians who forwarded an interest in getting involved
with the committee. This is heartening in light of the fact
that existing members are doing all in their powers to put
themselves out of commission. Niamh Kenny’s family
has its obvious demands and the arrival of Joe on the 23rd
of January last added to her workload. We all appreciate
Niamh’s overseeing of the database but next year we
will have to include a new member in that role. Thanks
again, Niamh, for all you have done considering your busy
workload with your own business and family.
The Midelton College Association continues to work with
the fundraising committee for the new sports hall. Following
the successful scrap metal project, we look forward to two
events this Winter. A night at Cork’s greyhound track on
the 22nd of November will hopefully see a very large
turnout on what should be a fun night. The Association is
delighted to be able to sponsor a race which will add €500
to the kitty. A thank you is also due to the large number of
Midleton businesses who contributed to the race card for
the night.
Mrs. Kay Cairns, as most of you know, spent most of the
Summer in hospital and recuperating following a nasty fall
in July. It was only at the end of September that Kay finally
got back to her own residence as a result of her injuries. If
however she had not been visited by the King Family, who
found her lying on her kitchen floor, God knows what the
outcome may have been. We wish her well and thank her for
her compiling of the past pupil jottings for this magazine.
Kay, in the company of Ann Prendergast, did however show
up at this year’s reunion for the thirty, twenty, and ten-year
school leavers. Thanks also to Mr. And Mrs. Levis, Mr.
Bud Morrissey and Mr. Ray Power for taking the time to
greet the returning past pupils. Allie Power (MacKillop),
yet again, did the honours organising waiters and helped
decorate the dining hall with flowers for the occasion. This
was very much appreciated by all those involved. Rory, our
chef, turned out a fantastic meal and without him this event
could not go ahead. Mr. Simon Thompson, our Headmaster,
always enters into the spirit of the occasion and next year
will see the first of his pupils returning. This is a milestone
stmas carols at the
Members of Form IV who sang Chri
Christmas fair last year.
On the 6th of December, during the Christmas fair at the
College, we will have our own special event. Ten turkeys
will be auctioned off comedian Pat Shortt on behalf of the
M.C.A., with all proceeds going to the development fund.
We will do all in our power to create a ‘bidding war’ with a
bit of craic thrown in too. A thank you is due to Mr. Robert
Fitzsimmons who lovingly produced the said turkeys which
will be the centrepiece of some families’ Christmas dinner.
Just recently, the M.C.A presented Mr. Simon Thompson
4000 to help buy sports equipment for the school. I am
sure this will be spent wisely on our behalf. Before I sign
off, I would like to remind readers that our A.G.M. is on the
last Monday (27th) of January 2014. Myself, Douglas Hall,
Niamh Kenny, Robert Chambers, Chloe Farnham, and Mr
Simon Thompson would be glad to hear from any of our
past pupils interested in helping with the M.C.A. Enjoy
your Christmas and good wishes for a more prosperous
year ahead.

Anthony Summers
The 50th anniversary of the assassination of President John
F. Kennedy brought the focus of world media to this event
which continues to fascinate anyone with an interest in
American history and culture. The College was honoured
that world renowed scholar, journalist and author Anthony
Summers came to speak on the subject.
Mr. Summers has recently re-issued his definitive work
on the events surrounding the assassination, ‘Not in Your
Lifetime’. He spoke authoritatively and with new details
about not only the events of the 22nd November 1963 but
also the period of the 1960’s more broadly. An enthusiastic
and informed audience engaged in questions and answers
following the completion of Mr. Summers talk. There
was a good attendance from senior cycle history students
in addition to parents and friends of the College. Sincere
thanks are expressed to Anthony and his his co-author
Ms. Robynn Swan for their generosity in making the time
within a busy schedule to speak at the College.

REUNION DINNER 2013
On the evening of the 19th October past pupils from the
years 2003, 1993 and 1983 returned to the College for
their reunion dinner. They gathered firstly in the Colton
Building for drinks and chat before dinner. The evening
was so fine that many stood outside to enjoy meeting and
chatting to old friends again.
At 8.00 p.m. we made our way into the Dining Hall where
Rory and his staff served yet another excellent meal.
It was so good to meet past pupils again from far and
near. Eleven were back from the class of 1983. DEREK
O’GALLIGAN who is married with two children, MIKE
BROOKS, TOM WALSH, RODERICK MOLONEY and
SIMON KELLY. ALAN BOYLE was up from Tralee, he
is married with 3 kids and said it was a great night and
thanked all who had organised it.

Michelin star chef Ross Lewis’ cookery book: ‘Chapter One,
An Irish Food Story’. Others from the class of 1993 were
CAITRIONA DAUNT and SHANE O’DONNELL. It was
so good to see ROMAN DE PONTAC over from France
for the occasion. He was looking as dashing as ever! He
is married with 4 children and works as an auctioneer.
He quoted this – ‘It’s nice to be important, but its more
important to be nice!’ What wise words. RORY BELL

He was invited to say Grace before and after the dinner.
His after dinner grace held us all spellbound and made us
think:- ‘well done Wayne’.
There were eighteen back from the class of 2003, a very
special group for me as they were our last sixth form
when we retired in 2003. They were all looking very well
indeed and hardly changed in the ten years since leaving
the College.
DANIEL McCARTHY works for Kentz,
Clonmel in management. He loved his time in Midleton
College. He is married to AILEEN DROMGOOLE, they

little girls. EVE BOLSTER is a Barrister.
SARAH O’DWYER is also a Barrister. ROB FULLER is a
farmer and CHRIS McGRATH (Rocky) works for Apple

his year. CAROLYN BUTTIMER (nee SMITH), who was
Head Girl in her final year, was there with her husband

are expecting their first baby in March. She visited me
twice when I was convalescing after my accident and always
managed to cheer me up when I was feeling down. Dr.
HEATHER DEANE was so sorry to miss the reunion but
she is working in Australia and gaining loads of experience
in paediatrics, the branch of medicine she has always
wanted to specialise in. She also visited me when she was
home in August and announced her engagement to Jony
shortly after her return to Australia.
After dinner there were the usual short speeches. ROBERT
CHAMBERS spoke first, deputising for President JOHN

SMYTH. I said my usual few words and reminded the class
of 2003 that they had indeed fulfilled my husband’s desire to
go out ‘trailing clouds of glory’ as two of that class LAURA
CUDDY and GORDON HOPKINS had both achieved the
maximum 600 points in their Leaving Certificate, a feat
never before or since achieved. ADAM O’Keeffe spoke for
the class of 2003 and I was so ‘chuffed’ when he welcomed
me and included me in the toast to ‘Boss’. They were a
very special group to both of us and it was so sad that ‘Boss’
wasn’t there to enjoy the evening with them. My other
regret was that I didn’t get a group photograph of them
all. As I was, and still am, recovering from my accident in
July, I was not quite at my ‘sparkling best’ when it came to
the photographs – and that doesn’t often happen!! With so
many of the class of 2003 back I was really quite distressed
that I hadn’t got the all important photo. If anyone took one
please, please let me know!!
I hope I haven’t missed mentioning anyone, though there
were a couple of names I couldn’t decipher when reading
your comments!!
We look forward to next year’s reunion dinner and urge
the classes of 1984, 1994 and 2004 to get texting etc. so that
many of you will be able to return for a great evening of
reminiscence.
