U16 B GIRLS HOCKEY
the supporters (and coach!) with an outstanding display, outclassing the opposition 4-0. Leading from the front, captain Maeve Kingston scored a brace, with one a piece from Charlotte Hall and Charley Moore. This was to prove the catalyst for a good cup run this year. Next up was a tricky test on a grit pitch away in the sunny south east and Dungarvan in the league. The surface was bobbly, uneven and littered with puddles, but this didn’t dampen the girls spirits as they created a plethora of chances against fairly weak opposition. A 2-0 score line hardly reflects how dominant they were. Daisy CardosoMurphy and Sarah O’Donnell finding the back of the net on the day. Our first fixture of the new year saw us pitted against our previous league opponents Fermoy, this time at home and this time in the cup. In a very one sided affair, the girls ran out 10-0 winners on a day where everything went right for us and everything went wrong for our opposition. There were two hat tricks scored on the day, by Charlotte Hall and Sarah O’Donnell, both of whom were beginning to rack up the goals, 2 from Daisy Cardoso-Murphy, herself finding the back of the net frequently also, and one a piece from Maeve Kingston and Ella Roch-Perks. An outstanding display, is all that can be said as the result speaks for itself! The next round of the cup saw us make the trip to Cork City for a quarter final with Mount Mercy in early March. Another 5 star performance ensued from all, but especially Daisy Cardoso-Murphy who literally gave a 5 star performance with her 5 goals on the day in a 5-1 mauling! Having been 1-0 down for almost the entire first half, this was a most pleasing turn around. Our final league match of the season was away on the island of Cobh on a desperately wet day! Puddles were forming all over the pitch, it was wetter than an otter’s pocket! Nonetheless, the girls showered us with goals again, romping to a 4-0 drubbing of the opposition, with goal machine Daisy Cardoso-Murphy at it again with a hat trick (that’s 11 goals in 4 consecutive games!) and Sarah O’Donnell adding another one to her tally for the season. This win secured the league for us and was thoroughly deserved from a team who had performed so consistently well in every match! However, the season wasn’t at its conclusion yet. For we had a cup semi final to look forward to. We had been drawn away to Ursulines, Thurles, a daunting prospect. The day started badly with the news that captain Maeve Kingston was too ill to play, so Charlotte captained the team on the day in her absence. That meant a reshuffle to the team, which didn’t help our cause. It was a searingly hot day in mid March, and we hit the ground running taking the lead early doors through a beautiful counter attack finished expertly by Charlotte Hall. Belief began to grow. However, between the heat and some dodgy umpiring calls by the home umpire, Ursulines equalised and then took the lead at the end of the first half, with two quick fire goals. This took the wind out of our sails a bit and significantly changed the coaches half time team talk! But as was indicative of this team this year, they never gave up and fought back bravely. We equalised midway through the second half, with an expertly taken goal by Charlotte Hall, who was having an outstanding game and really leading from the front in Maeve’s absence. The heat really began to zap the energy levels of both teams in this pulsating encounter of end to end hockey, with both teams emptying the subs bench regularly. In the closing stages, disaster struck. A tiring defence caused a momentary lapse and Ursulines scored a third: heartbreak. With mere minutes left, the girls threw everything but the kitchen sink at them, but alas could not find a way through and it ended 3-2. But what a game of hockey! The girls can feel very proud of being involved in such a spectacle. So it was a bad way to end the season, but at least there was some joy in winning the league. It was an excellent season and the girls performed admirably throughout! U16 squad 2014-15: Maeve Kingston (c), Charlotte Hall (vc), Niamh Power, Mary Smiddy, Victoria Hosford, Katie Mariga, Charley Moore, Patricia Calzado, Daisy CardosoMurphy, Rebekah Opperman, Sarah O’Donnell, Bryna Heffernan, Eimear Marley, Lara Summers, Ella RochPerks, Cara Fletcher, Alice Tierney, Gabrielle Humphreys, Diane Pope, Alice O’Donnell, Benedicta Alapini, Rachel Martin, Keziah Ottman. - A.L. U16 B Girls Hockey There were few enough matches this year for the ‘B’ team, between matches being cancelled due to opposition school commitments and a flooded pitch one day. We ended the season with 3 losses and 2 wins, but took a lot of positives away despite the challenging season. The first match was a friendly against Kilkenny College which resulted in a 2-0 victory, Lara Summers and Hannah Duffy scoring the goals. The next match saw us start our league campaign against Christ the King, which was always going to be a challenge considering we were without five of our starting team on the day. Despite having to make so many changes, we played some excellent hockey throughout, but ultimately it proved too much a challenge and we lost 3-0. 76 Ashton was our next opposition, again in league. Once again, on the day, we were a number of players down and ended up with the bare 11, including two Spanish players, Itzi and Ana who played their first match. Goalkeeper Sarah Murphy made a few crucial saves, while Celia, another Spanish player who had only recently started playing, put in a massive performance. This was another positive performance under difficult conditions, but it proved too much for us not having any subs to bring in and we ended up losing 2-0. Regina Mundi were up next, in the league. This was a very tight encounter, probably our most competitive match of the season, but unfortunately we finished up on the wrong end of a 1-0 scoreline. Doherty, A. Tierney, L. Summers, K. Duffy, C. Acedo, R. Martin. Our final match of the season was against Ursulines, Blackrock. We took all those positives from the previous difficult matches, played some brilliant hockey and finished the season on a deserved high. Alice Tierney scored twice, with Niamh Power and Celia Perez both scoring their first goals resulting in a 4-1 victory, exactly what the team deserved after their efforts throughout the season. They were a great group to work with, we had plenty of giggles along the way, while also playing some excellent hockey. I wish them all the best and hope they continue to enjoy their hockey! Fleming. 77 2nd Year Girls Hockey The 2nd year girls had a very successful season with nine wins, two draws and two losses. The squad was made up of 22 players, including 3 beginners Violetta Sanchez, Deborah Sode and Hannah Beckingham, who showed great progress through the year. The team was captained by Elena O’Galligan and Shirley Bailey who were very capable and encouraging in their role. Our season started with three friendlies, a 1-0 win against Kilkenny College, with a goal from Shirley Bailey, a 3-0 win against Rockwell, with goals from Caoimhe O’Sullivan, Onome Akilhomen and Laura Casey, and a nil all draw against Mount Mercy. With no goals conceded in these matches, our confidence and team spirit was high going into league matches. Our first league match was at home against a strong Crosshaven side, with Elena scoring and the game ending in a one all draw. Following this the team settled into a good pattern with a 5-0 win against Cobh with goals from Caoimhe O’Sullivan, Jessie McCarthy and a hat trick from Shirley, and a 1-0 win against Fermoy with Elena scoring the important winning goal. The new year started with a friendly against Kilkenny College which unfortunately ended in a loss, and our final league match against St. Als also didn’t go our way with Elena scoring our only goal in a 4-1 result. The goals scored through the season were backed up with great supporting play by other midfield and forward players including Elaine O’Brien, Doireann McCauley, Sarah Jane Lynch, Treasa Jiang, Sarah Collins and Caoimhe Parsons. A solid defence was made up of Aisling Kiy, Rachel Fleming, Clara Keane, Kate O’Riordan, Ceire Graham and Shirley Bailey, with Laurileigh Baker as goalkeeper. They worked strongly together throughout all matches to hold off the opposition. The girls did incredibly well in the cup. Our first round was against St. Angela’s where goals from Onome and Caoimhe O’Sullivan lead us to a 2-0 victory. We then played Fermoy where a hat trick from Emily O’Hara and a goal from Shirley meant a comfortable win to get to the quarter finals. Our quarter final was against Mt. Mercy and was a challenging match. With 10 minutes to go Elena made a break and got past multiple members of the opposition to end with a one on one against the keeper, where coming in from the right hand side she scored a beautiful goal. This 1-0 win got us through to the semi final where we played Crescent at home. Unfortunately a 3-0 loss ended our dream of the cup but it was a fantastic effort from all involved. The team’s commitment to training was fantastic with almost a full squad attending all sessions, even through the winter months. Between that and their positive attitude to improving their hockey skills, the girls worked well together throughout the year. I had two very memorable and tasty cakes presented to me during the year and I think both the students and I learnt a few life lessons along the way! They were enthusiastic and interested and I enjoyed coaching them, and wish them well in hockey in the future. 1st Year Girls A Hockey Back Row L-R: Ms. Cotter, L. Whyte, W. Allen, E. Connon, C. They were a very enthusiastic and determined bunch and they excelled from the start of the year through to the end of the season. Throughout the year they played with great commitment and tenacity. The side was captained by Aoife Gill and she was a great leader in all games. Laurna Mc Hugh took on the role of goalkeeper and showed great ability, bravery and skill as she improved with every game. She trained extremely hard and made a number of great saves in every game. In defence Emily Connon, Leila Whyte, Charlotte Walsh, Tessa Haughton Lynch, Laura Kenneally Smiddy, Rhianna Boullier, Sarah Hall, Róisín Mc Carthy and Willow Allen all worked tirelessly each day with their strong tackling and skilful passing out of defence. Our midfield players of Zara Bowles, Aoife Gill, Hanna Roch Perks, Caoimhe O’ Sullivan, Emma Musgrave, Anais Whyte, Doireann Conway and Katie Poynton showed huge energy and hunger in each game and put significant pressure on our opposition. In attack Ruth Deane, Lucy Byrne, Saoirse Burns, Hollie Whelan, Sofia Tinne, Emily Tanner, Laura Cosgrave, Jaimee Lee Fitzgerald all played vital roles in our games throughout the hockey season. Aoife, Lucy, Saoirse and Ruth were our main goal scorers with Leila, Charlotte, Holly, also getting on the scoresheet. We had an exciting league campaign and came out victorious in all encounters which led to our success in our section of the League. We overcame St Al’s of Carrigtwohill, Loreto Fermoy, Crosshaven and Christ the King. We met Regina Mundi in the first round of the cup and a win here saw us advance to the second round where we met Coláiste Choilm of Ballincollig. Goals from Lucy and Saoirse led to our success in this round and thus we progressed to the quarter final where we met a strong Presentation Bandon side. The game ended in a nil all draw after extra time which led to an exciting end with penalty strokes. Zara Bowles was the hero of the day slotting her penalty into the left hand corner. Our year ended in a tough battle against Crescent College of Limerick. Here we met a very strong side who went on to win the final of the cup. Our girls gave an excellent display of hockey and showed just how much they progressed throughout the year. Some girls were complete beginners and made significant progress throughout the hockey season. Well done to all involved and best wishes for the year ahead. Senior A Boys Hockey The season started quickly with a home match on September 3rd against Kilkenny College; after a hard fought game, we ended up on the right side of a 4-3 result. After a few weeks we played Bandon Grammar at home in the league resulting in a 3-3 draw. It was now time for the Irish schools qualifiers, held in Garryduff Sports Centre, in which the top three schools qualify with the extra pressure of Midleton College hosting the schools for the first time. We started with a win against Newtown School Waterford and on the wrong side with defeats by Bandon Grammar and Ashton School. Our last match was against Villiers School Limerick and with a must win situation for us to qualify and a draw would see Villiers through. After the sides being level at 1-1 we entered the last few minutes if the game winning a penalty corner which we took and it was saved, with the opposition runner breaking the line we were awarded another corner. With high emotions and the final whistle just gone it was a push out by Alex Burns, stop by Alex Deane and a low drag flick which hit the back board by Declan Murphy. It was Midleton College that qualified for the Irish Schools Tournament, a little close for comfort! October 15th we played Bandon Grammar in a match finally losing 3-1 on the run up to the Irish School Tournaments. The tournaments saw us in a group with Banbridge Academy, Wesley College, and RBAI. With our first match against Banbridge, which we lost 3-0 on Wednesday October 20th after which we played Wesley College our first match of Thursday with whole school support at the match, we resulted in a 2-2 draw. We then drew 1-1 with RBAI and lost 4-1 to Sullivan Upper Lisburn in a friendly on the Friday morning. Overall, the tournament was a great success for all 16 teams involved and well done to St Andrews College on winning the final. 80 On that note, I wish to thank all of the sponsors Kukri sports for the medals, Walsh Sports, Hockey World, and Spar in Rathcormac, Owenacurra Pharmacy, Merck Millipore, and Midleton Medical Centre. Ashton School, Bandon Grammar, Church of Ireland HC, and UCC in assistance to Midleton College for use of their facilities during the tournament. Also thanks to all the staff of Midleton College Bud Morrissey, Ray Power acting principal and vice principal, for their support and help. Mary Lenihan for her IT work, Mary Power for tournament Coordinator with me and all the hockey and sports departments in Midleton College and Munster Umpires Associations for their umpiring schedules. It is at least nine years since we have had to co-ordinate an event of that size! Back to the hockey pitch after a well earned rest, we played Villiers at home drawing 2-2 in the league. After Christmas with a couple gone from our squad with rugby commitments we played Kilkenny College away in a friendly short a couple of key players due to injury and sickness we came out winning on a 7 goal to 5 margin. We were now to play Villiers School in the Munster School Senior A cup semi-final at home on January 21st, which was a very close game with a lot of end-to-end hockey. Unfortunately, we ended up on the losing side with Villiers going through to the Munster Cup final vs Ashton School Cork. We finished the season with a loss to Ashton School in the league. On a high note our performance in the Irish Schools was excellent, Alex Deane played Munster U18,along with being on an Irish U18 training panel which was matched by Alex Burns (Captain) on U21’s who matched his elder brother Nicholas playing for 5 years on a senior A hockey team. Rob Johnston was player of the year who did not miss one match and played well in every match. Also well done to Nathan Lynch, Harry Compton, Julian Drennan, Harry Deane, Andrew Ryan, and Dara Thompson. Representative Honours Well done also to the senior B boys who won the cup, U16 A and Minor/U14 A getting to the cup finals, 2nd year B and 1st year A who both won their cups and minor A’s who finished fourth in the John Waring Trophy in the all Irelands in Lisnagarvey Hockey Club in April. Lastly, I wish to thank Catriona Hassey, Liz Clifford, Cormac Nugent, Chris Blaney, Eric Calendar, and Dane Hawkings for their coaching and umpiring during the season. Senior Panel: E. Senior B Boys Hockey The season was a literal game of two halves, the first half being the opening stages of a season when the team hadn’t gelled nor found its identity. They played a number of friendlies against Kilkenny and Ashton, which they played valiantly but did not win. Partially due to the fact most of the team had only played hockey very sparingly throughout school, or had just picked up the sport. The second half of the season though following the end of the Senior A season saw the panel strengthened significantly. They played a cup semi final against Ashton away which they won convincingly, setting up a cup final against the Senior A team from Newtown. The final was played up in Midleton in the most dire of conditions, rain pouring from the skies, but this couldn’t dampen the spirits of the team. Captained by Pa O’Riordan on his final senior hockey appearance for the school, they played very well. The standard of hockey was sublime, and the game was played a ferocious pace. The score finished at 4-3 and was an exciting prospect all round. They fully deserved to win the title. U16 Boys Hockey The under 16 boys season started with an away trip to Kilkenny College. The promising talent of the squad showed through early doors and they won 7-1, including two braces for Dara Thompson and Nathan Lynch. Following on from this we had 2 league games back to back, against Ashton and Bandon respectively, we lost both to tight scorelines. We played a friendly against Ashton which we won convincingly thanks to the lightning speed and impact of Jack Northridge. The “B” team played their first game of the year away to Newtown, which they lost. The “A” team had their cup semi-final drawn away to Bandon Grammar, which was a daunting fixture given that we had already lost on the road up there early in the season, however the lads showed great character to travel up there and teach Bandon a lesson in hockey, setting up a final against Ashton. In the buildup we played another friendly against our future cup opponents, this time travelling to them, and we played out a highly tense draw. The “B” team played on the same day, winning their game which was a massive shock as most of the team had only picked up hockey for the first time this year. The final was to be played at home in Midleton, playing in front of supporters is always a daunting prospect, but our lads did not shy away from the occasion, fighting every step of the way against a strong Ashton side. Unfortunately we fell 2-1 in the end but the lad acquitted themselves with the highest of honour. U14 Boys Hockey The A team panel this year consisted of 19 different students from both first and second year. They played a total of 12 games over the season, 6 friendly matches, 4 League games and 2 Cup Matches. The team scored 28 goals against their opponents, while Mark Donnelly performed well in goals, keeping a clean sheet on four occasions and only letting in 12 goals over the whole season. The team were undefeated in their League: Bandon (3 – 0), Ashton (2 – 1), Villiers (4 – 1), Newtown (2 – 2). Unfortunately the boys did not win the League outright but were forced to share the spoils with Newtown as they allowed them to come back from being 2 goals down to draw the match. As the League only consists of five teams, a number of friendly matches are played throughout the year. This season we played Kilkenny College four times, winning two games (5 – 1) and (3 – 1), drawing one game (2 – 2) and losing one (1 – 2). Friendly matches were also played against Ashton (1 – 0) and Bandon (3 – 0). The Cup Competition was greatly anticipated as the carrot on the end of the stick was a potential visit to the North at the end of the year for the Finalists. Our first game was the semi-final against Villiers, which was played in Limerick. It was a tense affair which ending up going to extra time after a scoreless game. Daniel McGauran put the team a goal up within a minute into extra time however according to the rules of Munster schoolboys’ hockey the extra time still had to be completed. Despite Villiers replacing their goalkeeper with an outfield player in an effort to score we ran out eventual winners with Hugh Jeffrey adding another goal to seal a (2 – 0) victory to guarantee our progress into the final and entry into the John Waring All Ireland Schoolboys Competition. The final was against Ashton and played in their home grounds, it was a disappointing game as the team failed to rise to the occasion and lost (0 – 1). Key players that impressed at this level were Hugh Jeffrey who captained the team and was tireless in his efforts. Hugh was usually partnered in mid-field by Art Moore and Ross Bailey, both of whom show potential for the future. The competition for top goal scorer this year was close, Daniel McGauran scored 7 goals followed by Liam Hennigan on 6 goals. I would like to thank all the players for their participation throughout the year and wish them luck in their future hockey playing careers. Most importantly I would like to thank Mr. Seale who helped keep me sane when the players were acting like 14 year old boys! A Panel: M. Donnelly (GK), J. Bowles, I. Farrell, R. Bailey, J. Daly, A. JOHN WARING TOURNAMENT The John Waring All Ireland Schoolboys Championship is an annual day-long event for the finalists of each minor provincial cup. The teams competing this year were Midleton and Ashton from Munster, Dublin High School and St Andrew’s College from Leinster and Methodist College Belfast and Sullivan Upper School from Ulster. The tournament was held in Lisnagarvey Hockey Club near Lisburn, Co. Down on Wednesday 15th April and as our first match started at 10am, an overnight stay was required. It was an intense hockey-filled day for all the teams concerned and we had a difficult start as we played 83 U14 BBoys Hockey Back Row R-L: Mr. Seale, S. Walsh, J. Deane, S. Ziad, J. Cardoso-Murphy, M. Donnelly, A. O’Shea, M. Olu-Ikpen, A. Moore, Dr. Gash. Middle Row L-R: I Farrell, R. Corrido Mendez, T. Murphy, C. Bane (Capt), D. Folarin, S. Feighan-Kingston, J. Mahony. Front Row L-R: C. O’Riordan, C. Rose. against our local rivals Ashton. Although the team played with great spirit it proved to be difficult to score within the 20 minutes allocated for matches and the result as a (0 – 0) draw. Our next game was against Sullivan and the team failed to produce the goods: they played poorly, losing (0 – 4) with several players looking like they had been awake all night. Our best game was against the favourites St Andrew’s who had won the tournament the previous year, the team fought much harder, were resolute in defence and we nearly scored against the run of play, unfortunately St Andrew’s managed to score in the last minute of play for a (0 – 1) victory. The break for lunch should have given the team a chance to rest up and regain composure for the final two games however the team did not perform to the best of their ability and lost both matches, High School (0 – 2) and MCB (1 – 3). Congratulations must go to the team who qualified for a National competition against teams their own age, this is an impressive achievement in any context and one that should be appreciated by all concerned. Final Standings: 1st Methodist College Belfast, 2nd St. Andrew’s College, 3rd Sullivan Upper, 4th Dublin High School, Equal 5th Midleton College, Equal 5th Ashton School. Team: M. Donnelly, J. U14B/Minor B Boys Hockey The season started well with large numbers at A and B level with some players playing down on the B team. Our first match was against Kilkenny College away which gave us a great start with 2-1 win. After which Kilkenny College travelled to us resulting in a 3-0 win with goals from David Folarin, Toby Oshikoya, and Jack Cardoza Murphy. Our next outing was Ashton School at home in the league ending in a 1-1 draw with a goal from David Folarin. Mid-October we played Bandon Grammar and after some excellent play in the second half we had a 3-2 win with goals from Saif Zaid, Johnaton O’Mahony, and Adam O’Shea after which we recorded a 0-0 home draw against Ashton School. After Christmas, we played Villiers School Limerick in the cup semi-final resulting in a 1-0 win. 84 The time had come for the cup final with a panel of 19 players to play Ashton at home on March 24th leading to a very tense game, going as we all thought into extra time. We were awarded a penalty in the dying seconds. Up stepped Cathal Bane who converted it with ease. May I say well done to this minor panel on winning the cup following on their 1st year B cup winning team which with more silverware looking bright for the future for these players. Also to Catriona Hassey, Chris Blaney, Eric Callender, and Dane Hawkins for umpiring during the season. Panel: T. Murphy, J. Deane, S. Marley, A Moore, J. Cardosa-Murphy (capt), C. Bane, T. It did not take long for the season to kick into gear with a blitz in Bandon Grammer. They were split into 3 mixed ability teams. Team 1 won 1 game and lost 2. Team 2 won 1 and lost 2. Team 3 won 3 and lost 1. It gave us coaches the chance to see what shining stars we would have on the team. A short two weeks later we held our own blitz here in Midleton. The team was this time split into 2 teams. Team 1 won 1 game and lost 3. Team 2 won all of their 4 games. At this stage the boys were beginning to really gel together and learning all the skills and rules they needed to progress towards full pitch games. Some names like Conor McCormack, Ross Bailey and Rory Bawden were beginning to pop up more often in conversations due to the natural skills they were showing and standing out in matches. Next step was to head to Villiers School in Limerick. Once again we travelled with large numbers and split into 3 teams. At this blitz the boys had progressed at such a fast rate that out of 9 games they played they only lost 1 game. More and more names were popping up as very talented players. Liam Curley, Max Ahern and James Butler stood out. 1st Year B Boys Hockey Back Row L-R: Mr. Blaney, D. Oujalape, C. O’ Galligan, B. Ingamells, L. Obersby, S. Spillane, L. McGovern, G. They played the match at home in Midleton and came out winners by a single goal to put them into the final. Next step they played Bandon in the cup final. It went right into extra time before Ross Bailey won the game for Midleton with a well stuck short corner. For the B team they sadly lost in the semi final to Newtown away. For their first year playing hockey it was great to see some silverware at the end and a truly great start to their school years playing hockey. This time the boys came out with 1 win and 1 loss against an opponent they had never played before. Overall it was a fantastic start to most of the boys hockey careers and they certainly will go on to win many more matches together. Girls senior Soccer This year sees our continued participation in both the girls junior and Senior Cork Schoolgirls league competitions. Our junior side continues on with their impressive form of last year when only a late equaliser from Colaiste Choilm preventing us from progressing to the junior league final. Having scored earlier on through Shirley Bailey, the game which was played in near Artic conditions was a test of both determination and character which should stand us in good stead this season . To date this term we have recorded victories in the ‘derby‘ at home to St. Colmans along with enjoying a high scoring encounter with Terence McSweeney Community College Cork. A feature of our matches so far has been the free flowing attacking football on view with 23 goals scored in our opening 5 games . Our senior side, which is comprised mainly of our junior players, have also started on a positive note having 86 played out a 4-4 thriller with St Brogans from Bandon at home before being beaten 4-1 by St Mary’s of Mallow, having initially taken the lead. On the development front, our first years have again qualified for the final of the FAI futsal competition in County Cork having come through their section with 3 wins out of 3 and no goals conceded, which was a unique achievement in its own right . Under the guidance of Mr. Jason Browne, our squad continues to progress both in terms of numbers and quality with competition for places at an all time high. Looking further afield our leagues continue to expand with 10 schools now competing in both the junior and senior sections. - K.O’N. Girls Junior Soccer Back Row L-R: Mr. O’Neill, D. Conway, K. Equestrian Equestrian For whatever reason this year we were only able to take part in one competition. This despite the fact that a good number of students appeared interested in joining the equestrian team at the start of the year. Perhaps it was just bad luck with horses being injured etc. and hopefully this coming year will see us get back to old ways. In January a team of three riders, Gavin Smiddy, Marwin O’Sullivan and Mary Smiddy saddled up and took off for our annual visit to Ballyrafter. The interschools competition saw ten teams from Munster compete. Our three riders all competed to the highest level and were placed third overall and only one fault separated them from second place. Hannah Roch Perks also competed as an individual and gave a good account of herself. Well done to the team and my particular thanks to Gavin Smiddy and Niamh McCormack for their commitment and participation over the six years. Both were stalwarts of the equestrian scene and I wish them well for the future. Thank you to Ms Anne Dawson who accompanied us on the day and I wish her well as the new Equestrian Coordinator. Tennis 2014-2015 The summer’s competition was a very busy time in the world of tennis for our internal competitions. The competition was played at three different age groups for both boys and girls. Most of the matches were played on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday afternoons. As always, there were some interesting surprises and assumed certainties. Junior Boys Winner: Runner Up: Jack Northridge Dara Thompson Senior Boys Winner: Runner Up: Chris Hall Rob Johnston U16 Girls Winner: Runner Up: Charlotte Hall Julie Ryall Results were as follows: U14 Girls winner: Runner Up: Jessie McCarthy Emily O’Hara U14 Boys Winner: Runner Up: Luke Obersby Robert Hickey - C.S. 87 Orienteering Orienteering Orienteering is the original adventure race. Using only a map and compass (sometimes!) runners must find a list of controls in the right order in forests, mountains and sand dunes. The fastest to do this wins! Not as simple as it sounds as many of our students will testify! place finish - well done to Alex Moore, Luca Howard, Cameron Rose and Tiernan Murphy. Not to be out done our Transition Year Boys Team made up of Zac O’SullivanHourihan, Ciaran McGregor, Sean Emerson & Callum Lynch came home in 2nd Place in the Senior category. The year commenced with training session in Rostellan Woods to work on technique. Unfortunately our first competitive event had to be cancelled due to weather. To make up for it we held a fun Christmas Orienteering Sprint Race at the College. Prizes for everyone who finished (chocolate Santa’s!) and most runners went out twice on the different courses! Thank you to Josh & Paul Over the summer Nick Simonin (Class of 2008) once more represented Ireland at the World Orienteering Championships which were held in Scotland. Nick was selected to run in both Spring and Long events. Nick is based full time in Sweden and is recognised as the number one Irish Orienteerer. O’Sullivan-Hourihan for planning, mapping and running the event on the day. February saw our athletes head to Fota Arboretum for the Cork Schools Championships – the running was fast and the course technical. Congratulations to Ben Killeen in Form I who finished 2nd in his category. Ben along with Ceadan Hoban, Graham Stuart and Luke McGovern were worthy 3rd team placed finishers. Our Senior Boys who had the longest and most technical course also came home with a 3rd team placing! Well done to Zac O’Sullivan-Hourihan, Ciaran McGregor, Callum Lynch and Sean Emerson. Thank you to all the students who participate in Orienteering throughout the year in all types of weather. Also thank you to Mr. Callender and to our Gap Students (Ms. Janie Lonergan and Ms. Rebecca Yeo) who accompanied them. - R. O’S.H. Irish Representative Honours Due to Mock Exams and TY Activities in March only Ben Killeen (Form I) headed off to Doneraile Forest Park for the Munster Schools Orienteering Championships. On the day Ben had almost a minute to spare on the next finisher to secure a very solid first place. Finally just before the Easter Holidays we sent 3 teams to compete at the All Ireland Schools Orienteering Championships. Once again Ben Killeen came home in 1st place closely followed by Ceadan Hogan in 2nd. Ben & Ceadan along with Briain Baily & James Butler also secured a 1st Place team finish in the 1st Year Boys category. Our 2nd/3rd Year Boys secured a 2nd Team 88 Zac O’Sullivan-Hourihan Athletics Our first athletics meet of the year took place in CIT in January. This was the South Munster schools cross country event and we had a number of athletes competing for the first time. Two first year girls, Aoife Mitchell and Hanna Roch-Perks, defied the horrible weather and course conditions and qualified for the Munster finals – well done to the girls and everyone involved on the day. The summer term brought more suitable conditions and with it greater success for our athletes. A number of students competed in the South Munster, Munster and All Ireland track and field events. Gareth Hosford won silver in South Munster and bronze in Munster throwing the shot putt and Andrew Ryan took bronze in the South Munster Long Jump. Over the past few years we were aware of Ben Donovan’s remarkable talent in the High Jump and this year was no different as he went from strength to strength. He set new records for the South Munster and Munster high jumps at junior level, recording 1.77m and 1.85m respectively. He finished off a great year with a gold medal at the All Irelands in Tullamore, narrowly missing out on a record. He also led the Midleton team at the Inter Schools which Ashton hosted in CIT. Ben set a high jump record and won the open triple jump event against older students from other schools. He was well supported by the talented first year, Jesse Maddix, who won the minor 100m and 200m events and led the minor boys 4 x 100m relay team to victory. Internally, the athletics championship was hotly contested with Rory Walsh, Ben Donovan and Jesse Maddix running out winners in the boy’s categories and Amy Chambers, Charley Moore and Hanna Roch Perks winning the girl’s categories. Hopefully the coming year will see an increase in participation and success going forward. Training will commence in the summer term. - O.C. Athletics Cricket The season started with much optimism in the camp as there was a strong squad of players this year. The team was captained by Alex Deane with Brandon McEvoy as his deputy. Each match took the form of t20s. Our first match was against Douglas at Harlequins cricket ground in the inaugural Munster Senior Schools t20 cup on a wild and cold day. We won the toss and elected to bat first, putting up a score of 147-8 with Alex Deane knocking a quick fire 54no and Ciarán McGregor with the next top score of 17. We restricted Douglas to 110-8 in their innings, a win by 37 runs and thereby qualifying for the final of the competition. Top bowlers on the day were Alex Deane 2-31, Brandon McEvoy 1-15 and Harry Deane 1-23. We then moved on to the final in very high spirits, with our opposition a very strong Presentation Brothers College (PBC) team at the Mardyke on a beautiful summers day, perfect for cricket! Alex won the toss again and we elected to bat. PBC bowled very well, restricting us to just 84-9 with the top scorers being Alex Deane 28 and Ciarán McGregor 19. We had to defend a small target, but the boys were well up for the task, bowling and fielding superbly well during PBC’s innings. Alas, we came up short. But it took them until the 18th over to get across the line. The pick of the bowlers were George Hennessy 1-5, Ciarán McGregor 1-7 and Alex Deane 1-12. The boys can be very proud of their performance in the face of adversity and runners up in the first year of a new competition is a very creditable accolade. We finished the season with a friendly against Bandon Grammar in Midleton. With a view to the future, a very fresh faced and young side took to the field for this match, with 7 debutants on display. They were captained 89 Cricket Back Row L-R: Mr. Blaney, Mr. Levis, S. Hayes, E. Hayes, H. Cremin-Mehmet, S. Mitchell, A. Burns, J. Northridge, J. Cremin-Mehmet, Dr. Gash. Middle Row L-R: H. We lost the toss and Bandon elected to bat on a beautifully warm and sunny day. Some very fine bowling from the beginners namely Niall Flynn, Rory Bawden, Liam Curley and Séan Hayes saw Bandon amass a mere 112 all out in their innings. The more experienced bowlers did the most damage to their batsmen, with Ciarán McGregor putting in another fine display with the ball attaining figures of 2-0. He was ably backed up by Harry Deane 2-8 and Max White 2-14. We managed to reach our target of 113 with the loss of just 3 wickets in the 17th over. Top batsmen were Ciarán McGregor 35 and Zac O’Sullivan-Hourihan 13, the latter kept wicket very well throughout all of the match and batted with great discipline also. The first term was devoted to training and practice on Monday evenings. In the second term we entered three teams into the ChessZ: Secondary Schools League. We had quite a number of keen young players so we fielded two teams in the Novices League and one in the Champions League. Timing was a crucial factor this year since we didn’t actually receive the fixtures list until March! Frantic calls and emails between the coaches resulted in an agreement to play the matches as a one day blitz. First to play were our Champions team which consisted of Kevin Carew, Fionn English, Oisin Parsons and Lucas Oriel. On April 30th we travelled to Douglas Community School which was hosting the competition. We had to play three matches in our group. The first was against St. Francis College, Rochestown B team. It was a good start for us with a win of 2.5 to 1.5. The second match was a tougher proposition as we faced Colaiste Spioraid Naoimh’s A team. They are a seriously strong chess school and they beat us 3.5 to 0.5, with Fionn English’ s stalemate on board two slightly sparing our blushes! Lastly we played Spioraid Naoimh’s C team and recorded a better result of 3-1 in our favour, with Kevin, Fionn and Oisin winning their games and Lucas a bit unlucky to lose on board four. When match points were totted up Spioraid Naoimh A were clear winners with 7.5 and they went on to play Rochestown A in the final. The Novices blitz didn›t take place until May 11th and was hosted by Rochestown. Our A team were Adam O’Shea, Cameron Rose, Alex Moore and David Folarin while our B team were Daniel Oujalape, Luke Thompson, Rob Hickey and Jack Butler. Both teams played well but sadly came up against some very crafty opponents. Our A team played Colaiste Chriost Ri’s B team first and we lost 3.5 to 0.5 with David managing a stalemate on board four. Next we played Rochestown B team and came out the wrong side of a 3 to 1 defeat, with Adam winning his game on board one. Our B team also played two matches. Against Rochestown A we lost 3 to 1, with Rob winning for us on board three. The last match was against Colaiste Chriost Ri A team which was a resounding 4 to 0 victory for them. This effectively ended our inter-school matches. Chess Back Row L-R: Mr. Hickey, D. Oujalape, O. Parsons, A. O’Shea, Dr. Gash. Front Row L-R: A. Moore, D. Folarin, C. Rose. thanks to all those that represented the school in chess this year and if any new players wish to join they can find us in Room 7 on Mondays from 6.30-7.30. - B.H. CORK Representative Honours Our last event of the year was the internal school competition at junior and senior level. The early fixtures were quickly played off and we soon came to the finals. In the junior category Daniel Oujalape played Rob Hickey. Rob emerged as the winner, with Daniel a worthy runner up. The senior final saw Kevin Carew take on Oisin Parsons, Kevin won through and Oisin got the runner up award. Thus ended another year of Midleton College chess. So far this term chess is in the doldrums, some senior players have graduated and others have been seduced by Cookery Club on Monday nights since they are well fed at the end of each session! There are some enthusiastic juniors but at the moment it is probable that we will only enter one team in this year’s Leagues. As always my Well done to Luke Finnerty who represented Midleton College in The Lord Mayor’s Cup. He played football/ hurling on a combined schools team. 91 The Midleton College School Golf Championship took place at East Cork Golf Club on a Thursday afternoon in May 2015. Approximately fifteen senior students took part in the competition. Peter Matthews emerged as the outright winner with Ciaran McGregor finishing a close second and Joe Hennigan following in third place. Due to various other sporting commitments, it was not possible to field a team for the Munster Senior and Junior Golf Championship Qualifiers during the past school year. However, plans for Spring and Summer school competitions are already in motion! Senior Golf - H.D. Back Row L-R: Ms. Dennehy J. Hennigan, J. Beamish, Dr. Gash. Front Row L-R: E. Hayes, M. O’Brien, C. Midleton College Golf Society season 2015 2015 saw a change in the guard for the golf society with Ray Power passing on the reins of the society to a new committee of Ivan Beamish, John Tait, Michael Daley and Gordon Jermyn. The members of the society thank Ray for his tireless work in organising the outings over the past number of years and for keeping the members informed of the times and venues . score of 41 points. At the 2014 overnight outing it was agreed that a return visit to Tullamore should be included for 2015. On a windy day at the start of June, Peter Kelly’s 31 points was a winning score on this beautiful parkland course. Peter also wins the Gardner Cup which he last won in 2007. A venue that was included in this year’s itinerary was a return visit to Bandon Golf club which the society had not played for a number of years. Rory O’Neill’s, (’ Mr Golf’) score of 37 points was the best score of the day. As has been the tradition for many years, the first outing of the season was at Water Rock in mid April. Stephen Jermyn had the best score of the day with 38 points and Craig Whyte won the Basil Baker memorial trophy which has traditionally been presented at the first outing of the new season. The final outing of the year at Castlemartyr and the winner on the day was Ed Hayes who returned the amazing score of 46 points. Ivan Beamish was second with his best score of the season with 38 points and guaranteed that he would win his steak dinner from Trevor. The second outing was a return visit in early May to Muskerry golf club where Ed Hayes playing with the society for the first time returned a very impressive 1st 2nd 3rd Water Rock Stephen Jermyn Craig Whyte Josh Beamish Muskerry Ed Hayes Stephen Jermyn Trevor beamish Tullamore Peter Kelly Keith Chambers Ivan Beamish Bandon Rory O’Neill Josh Beamish Andrew McCarthy Castlemartyr Ed Hayes Ivan beamish Gordon Jermyn The player of the year was also decided at the Castlemartyr outing and there were a number of members in contention however, one of the members, Keith decided that he would show off his golf expertise in Portugal instead! The member with the best four scores from the five outings was Josh Beamish with a total of 131 points from the four outings he attended. Josh was a deserving winner as he returned identical points at three of the outings. Josh‘s name goes on the trophy for the first time in his first season as a full member of the society. 92 Provisionally, the opening outing of the 2016 season will be on April 9th at Water Rock and the full schedule of outings will be arranged in the New Year. Past pupils are always welcome to join us on any of the outings, just contact any of the committee for details of dates and venues. - G.J. Midleton College Parent Teacher Association Notes The Midleton College Parent Teacher Association (MCPTA) provides the structure through which parents/ guardians/ teachers attending Midleton College can work together for the best possible education for every student in the College. We do this by supporting each other and our children as they journey through their school years. We work in partnership to encourage social and other activities among members and to promote the involvement of parents and teachers in all aspects of the school community life. All Parents, guardians and teachers are members of the MCPTA while they have a child attending the College or are teaching in the College. We are very fortunate to have a group of dynamic and enthusiastic members on the MCPTA and we are all driven by the same goal – to provide a strong support for parents, guardians, teachers and indeed students, working in conjunction with the College’s Board of Management. MCPTA is affiliated to COMPASS (Cooperation of Minority Religious and Protestant Parent Associations) and NPCPP (National Parents Council Post Primary). Should you want to know more about how we work with these organisations, please get in touch. Many of the MCPTA events are now fixtures in the College calendar including the following: Study skills and information talks, hosting the hospitality tent at the Hockey Blitz, College Carol Service, Bottle Stall at the Christmas Fayre, Harvest Fest including ‘Bake Off ’, ‘Literary Competition’, ‘Photographic Competition’, Parent Social Evening, Careers Day, Transition Year Prizes, Governors Parent Reception, 2nd hand Uniform sale and Sports Day and more.. Look out for MCPTA Updates in the weekly Newsletters as well as the end of term ‘Yellow Newsletters’. 2015/2016 PTA Members: Parents/Guardians: Colm Long – Chairperson [email protected] Monica Corfield-Ottman – Secretary monica.ottman@ me.com Gabriela O’Mahony – Treasurer gabriela.omahony@ aperiofinance.ie Mandy Devlin Bronwen Braun-Lynch Cindy Tindall Una Byron Teachers: Dr Edward Gash Shane Fleming Brigid O Riordan Rachel Reeves We look forward to meeting all parents, guardians and friends of Midleton College at our events this school year. Colm Long Midleton College Association Report 2014-15 Due to time constrains and lack of events you may be pleased that this Report is not going to be the longest. First of all it was with regret that our committee at the Association called off this year’s reunion. With the quarter finals of the World Cup clashing with our traditional date, and the possibility of Ireland playing at 8.00pm on the same evening, we were informed that a number of past pupils were unsure about committing. Unfortunately with the purchase of so much food and wine, allied to the hiring of staff and our chef (Rory) it was a risk the M.C.A. could not contemplate, so hence the decision to postpone the event was taken. With the kind permission of Dr. Gash however we will make it up to all interested next year towards the end of October (22 October 2016). Well done it must be said to the Twenty Year Group who went ahead and had nearly thirty old friends stick with the date and travelled to Midleton regardless. Having spoken recently to Mr. John Moore it has been decided to get the class of 1966 together on this occasion. In 1966 the first group of pupils who went through the school under the then Headmaster, Mr. Jim Smyth, left Midleton College. This group included such luminaries as Brian Levis, Stuart Ruttle, Ian Mulligan, Duncan Moffett, John Packham and David Bloomer. I will be adding to the list over the coming weeks with a bit of research but if you are interested and know of the whereabouts any past pupils from this period you can contact John Moore at 086-8192342 or myself at 086-8206869. I would like at this stage both personally and on behalf of the Association to wish Bud Morrissey well on his recent retirement. I know that when Bud was ‘up the walls’ with more important tasks he still found time to help us out with M.C.A. events. Bud has always been asked for by legions of past pupils and entertained those who attended our last reunion in 2014. As Acting Headmaster at the time Bud’s speech amused the audience when parents referred to Midleton College as his school with Bud being completely responsible for all the comings and goings of both staff and pupils. With memories of teaching Geography, playing table tennis, attending nearly every match played by pupils, class tours and Staff Room issues Bud was an example of interest and dedication. May he have a long and fruitful retirement and Midleton College’s loss may be West Ham’s gain! I was glad to speak to Mrs. Kay Cairns just recently and was pleased to hear she was out and about after another setback. As I’ve said before Kay is the keeper of information on many generations of school leavers and her jottings are appreciated by all. 93 Finally it was with heart felt disappointment we heard recently of the fire damage done to Ardawilling House in Cloyne. This is the family home of Captain Desmond Furney, a M.C. past pupil who has for years hosted post ‘Carols by Candlelight’ get-togethers. Let’s hope 2016 will bring some better news to all and lets be glad that no one was injured or worse in the drama of such an awful accident. With Christmas looming I would like to wish all involved with Midleton College a pleasant break and may 2016 bring success and contentment to all. John Smyth, President Midleton College Association. John Smyth, President of Midleton College Association JOTTINGS 2015 The Past Pupils news is shorter this year as the Annual Reunion Dinner was cancelled due to the Rugby World Cup. Too many past pupils, who were due to attend, didn’t want to miss the Quarter Final Match and it wouldn’t have been viable to hold it with the small numbers able to attend. Hopefully next year we may be able to have ‘double years’ and include this years 10, 20 and 30 year groups as well so that they don’t miss out on what is always a great night. N.B. John Moore is organizing a 50 year reunion for the class of 1966. We would encourage as many past pupils as possible to take part. For details on how to contact him see the Midleton College Association article _ Ed. Here are the Jottings for 2015 and I hope you enjoy reading them. K. One of our older ‘old boys’ BISHOP EDWARD DARLING was pictured recently in St. Patrick’s Cathedral Dublin at the launch of ‘Thanks and Praise’ the new supplement to the 94 Church Hymnal. Bishop Darling was a former President of the Hymn Society of Great Britain and Ireland. He is also a writer of hymns, some of which appeared in the Church Hymnal and we often sang them during morning service in St. John’s Midleton. He was also a delegate at the recent Conference of Hymn Societies in Cambridge. When my husband and I lived in Belfast, before coming to Midleton in 1981, Edward was our rector in St. John’s Malone. We were shocked to learn of the death of NOEL DEANE in New York. Coming so soon after the sudden death of his brother BEN last December it was a dreadful blow to all the family. We send our love and heartfelt sympathy to Bertie, Charlie, William, Tom, Sadie and Frances their brothers and sisters and to their nephew and nieces HEATHER, JOE and BARBARA, all recent past pupils. I was delighted to meet up with Ceili at a dinner and music function earlier in the year. We congratulate PETER and JESSICA FLEMING on the birth of their daughter Dorothy Claire on 13th May, a first grandchild for Ian and Heather Fleming. SHANE FLEMING is teaching Chemistry in the College. We sympathise with all the Fleming family, especially his father Ian, on the death of Ian’s sister Anne in September. I had the pleasure of attending the marriage of JUNE FORD to Leslie Hall on a lovely sunny afternoon on the 12th September. It was a lovely wedding. Lorraine was Head Girl in her final year and Deirdre was Senior Day Girl. Another classmate LESLEY ORR couldn’t join them as she has just become mother to twin girls. Lesley and Carol both went to Trinity College on leaving school. We sympathise with JOHN HALES on the death of his mother in June. We were sad to learn of the death of KEN HASTIE on 27th March. To his wife Evelyn and children IAIN, PHILIP, SARAH and CHARLOTTE, all past pupils, we send our heartfelt sympathy. Ken and Evelyn had moved to live in Co. Wicklow in recent years to be closer to the family. He was a Diocesan Lay Reader and had served as one of the Diocesan Treasurers.
