DOMITE LAMINITE®
VITAL STATISTICS
Cast martensitic white iron castings, widely used in the mining industry for many years, have very
high resistance to abrasive wear but have poor mechanical properties which limit their usefulness
in applications involving impact stresses e.g. coarse ore handling. By vacuum brazing cast white
iron to a steel backing plate the most useful properties of each of these quite ordinary materials are
combined in the form of a composite with much improved mechanical properties

WEAR PLATE HISTORY
The significant engineering feature of this development is the strategic positioning of the steel
backing plate. This partnership contributes a significant degree of effective toughness to the
otherwise brittle cast white iron component of the composite, while providing the useful option of
being able to weld the wear part into position. The success of this product depends on the high alloy
mix of the white iron and the reliability of the vacuum brazing process. Done correctly, it achieves
a good brazed joint along with full hardening of the long wearing white iron in the rapid nitrogen
quench. A great range of plates and bars can be made, and in fact over the last forty years more than
3000 different sizes have been produced and distributed world-wide.

ABOUT THE INNOVATOR
The original concept of this laminated plate and early development work was carried out by Philip
Kempe, a mechanical engineer working with Canada Iron Foundries in the 1960’s and won an ASM
award at one of their annual Materials Awards Competitions. This was followed by a few successful
field trials in Canada, but eventually led to major market penetration in Australia into new hard
rock mining operations. Marketing and product development, firstly, at the old firm of Mason &
Cox Foundries in South Australia, then continued under CQMS Razer’s ownership, and led to the
establishment of the product globally. Today laminated plate is a major product line distributed
world-wide.

PIRATERS
Globally many companies today offer white iron products. What sets Domite®/Laminite® apart is CRs
commitment to consistent quality. In the harshest operating environments mines sites risk significant
downtime when an inferior white iron product fails through de-lamination and porosity in the
castings. Quality assurance from start to finish means CR’s Domite®/Laminite® has the right foundry,
heat treatment processes and a reliable proven wear life that outperforms industry standards by 15%.
