There, Valentina is waiting for her daughter to return from Germany, where she has gone because she was apparently offered a university stipend – but Valentina has not heard anything from her for months, and many other students with the same story have also disappeared. To counter the frozen winter and brutal waiting, and to keep hope, Valentina begins to write down the story of her life. Meanwhile, in Germany, Martin Lessmann is hiding a young Eastern European woman from her pursuers. When, shortly thereafter, she slits her wrists, he saves her life again – and makes a terrible discovery. The author Mechthild Bormann, born 1960, spent her childhood and youth on the Lower Rhine. Before she turned to writing, she worked in the food service industry, and as a dance and theatre pedagogue. Her crime novel Wer das Schweigen bricht became a bestseller and was awarded the German Crime Writing Prize 2012. Mechthild Borrmann lives in Bielefeld, where she works as a free-lance author. Primarily because she has become very solitary since her husband‘s death. Her contact with others is limited to her friend Egon, a baroque painter, and Columbo, her dog. Her only passion is playing chess – so who could have predicted that missent emails and the rude behaviour of her „neighbour“ the American consul, could completely turn her life upside down? Certainly not Sophie. But all is not fun and games: Sophie wants to teach her neighbour a lesson and suddenly finds herself faced with construction fraud, conspiracy theories, and all kinds of lies and deceit – and with the last man she had expected to find. The author: John Friedmann, born 1971 in Frankfurt, is a comedian and actor who gained fame as part of the comedy duo Erkan & Stefan. For several years now, he has been performing on stage as well as various television programs. He lives in Munich. FICTION Michael Hasenpusch Damenprogramm First Ladies Knaur TB, September 2014, 288 pages How could this happen? Not so long ago I was sitting in German conference rooms in my suit and tie, giving speeches. Now I’m in Africa in a permanently sweaty polo shirt, trying to explain to the housekeeper how to organise her work. I used to be a successful at my job – now I’m the first lady to my successful wife … Michael Hasenpusch was a local reporter and head of the Wirtschaftswoche online before he moved to Africa with his wife in 2008. In Germany, he left behind much more than just his collection of Scottish single malts. Since 2009 he has been sharing his experiences on a popular blog (www.firstladiesblog.de). The author: Michael Hasenpusch was born in a small Swabian city and grew up in a somewhat larger one. He studied sociology and history in Germany and the US before working as a local reporter, head of Wirtschaftswoche online, and consultant. His debut novel First Ladies is based on his own experiences. FICTION Kerstin Hohlfeld/Leif Lasse Andersson Ich heirate einen Arsch I‘m Marrying an Ass Knaur TB, November 2014, 352 pages Luisa is young and ambitious, and she has an amazing ass, thinks Björn. Björn is chief editor, Luisa’s boss, and an enormous ass, thinks Luisa. Two people like them could never get together – but they do, and plenty of chaos ensues, particularly because Luisa isn’t at all the meek kind of woman Björn normally dates. And Björn, the practised womaniser, suddenly realises that he loves Luisa for more than just her a– … The author Kerstin Hohlfeld has published numerous women’s novels. Leif Lasse Andersson has been working as an editor for 20 years, ten of them as chief editor for a major German newspaper – and is no fool about the newspaper business. FICTION Robert Kisch Möbelhaus Furniture Droemer TB, February 2015, 320 pages A renowned journalist loses his job because of the financial crisis. He has a son whom he needs to support. So he becomes a furniture salesperson in a provincial superstore. He meets former construction workers, musicians, hotel managers, architecture students – and those are only his colleagues. Robert Kisch’s sharp pen punctures illusions and gives an absurd, worrying, and honest account of his new life. The author: Robert Kisch is the pseudonym of an award-winning German journalist working in Berlin: decorated with Germany’s most significant journalistic prizes, medals, and other honors; an editor in Germany’s capital city; interviewer of the world’s most famous superstars. Until the financial crisis cost him his job. Here, he tells of his experiences. FICTION Eva Lindbergh Guten Feinden gibt man ein Küsschen Kisses For Enemies Knaur TB, March 2015, 320 pages Julia wants to make enough money, and her friend Edith, a Marxist idealist, wants to do good in the world. To combine these two goals, Julia and Edith have founded an advertising agency which will cater exclusively to ecologically sound, regional, and fair companies. Doing good: check. But what about the money? Not so good – apparently their new agency isn‘t the revolutionary new concept the advertising world was looking for. They are just about to go bankrupt when fate throws a chance their way: they participate in a pitch, and are soon swimming in the shark pond of large-scale advertising. And it‘s not going so swimmingly, particularly in determining who is a harmless little goldfish and who is a ravenous shark. So when the most attractive fish turns out to be the biggest competitor as well, chaos is bound to follow … The author: Eva Lindbergh is a creative director producing glamour advertising. She may not have a Porsche with leather seats or a neurotic Yorkshire terrier, but give her time. She drinks too many caramel macchiatos, turns up the volume when ads come on TV, and listens to Wagner when she’s working late on the pitch for the next project. She lives near Berlin. FICTION Lilly Lindner Winterwassertief Run deep Droemer TB, January 2015, 387 pages Raped repeatedly at age six, anorexic by age thirteen, seeking refuge in a brothel at 21 – Lilly Lindner’s monumental autobiography Splitterfasernackt stirred and stunned readers. In Run Deep she tells the story of what happened after: of standing naked in public with her story, of the ambivalence of her own feelings, and of the touching encounters she has had with readers who have been through similar pain, who opened up to her and took comfort from her words. Publishing her story tested Lilly Lindner as nothing had before. But in doing so, she grew, and gained the strength to be there for others, to listen and to encourage. The author: Lilly Lindner was born in Berlin in 1985. She started writing autobiographical texts and novels at age fifteen. She currently spends much of her time working with children. Rights sold: Rights to „Splitterfasernackt“ sold to: France: L‘Archipel; Netherlands: Meulenhoff FICTION Susanne Schädlich Herr Hübner und die sibirische Nachtigall Herr Hübner and the Siberian Nightingale Droemer HC, September 2014, 240 pages Stirring and harrowing, and grippingly narrated: two extraordinary lives, two people who refuse to lose their courage and passion despite years of internment in the prisons of the Cold War. Dresden in 1948: in a prison of the Soviet military government, a man and a woman communicate in code by knocking on their cell walls. Dietrich Hübner, 21, is a member of the Liberal Democratic Party since the end of the war; Mara Jakisch, 43, an operetta singer and film actress. He has sworn himself to the cause of democracy – a dangerous thing to do, since the SED and the Soviet occupiers have already colluded to persecute their political opponents. Mara Jakisch longs to get back on the stage. Singing and acting are her life. Then the accusations: espionage, sympathising with Western occupying powers. Both are condemned to 25 years of forced labour. Dietrich Hübner is sent to Bautzen, then to BrandenburgGörden, Mara Jakisch to a Siberian gulag. The fight for their dignity begins, strengthened by the hope for change. The author: Susanne Schädlich, born in Jena in 1965, works as a free-lance author, journalist and translator from American English and Spanish to German. She lived in the US for eleven years, returning in 1999 to Berlin, where she now lives with her family. Both quickly realise that they are connected by bonds deeper than friendship – but Sarah is happily engaged to the father of her daughter. As Ben and Sarah go through the various stages of the series, new doors open up for both of them, and the events around them seem to happen too fast to follow. Is this the kind of life they wished for? The author: Susanna Ernst was born in Bonn in 1980 and has been writing stories since elementary school. Since age sixteen, she also leads a musical troupe, directs their productions, and gives acting classes. She also paints portraits and designs and paints scenery for theatre productions. Although she studied banking and is a mother of two, her favourite way to spend the few hours she has to herself is writing, letting her thoughts and ideas roam free. When Paul’s wife dies, Milli can tell that he does not want her to be around him. From afar, she looks for a way to support him, to help him through his grief and desperation. LOVE/PASSION Diana Schwartz Adventures of Love Adventures of Love Knaur TB, January 2015, 304 pages Diana Schwartz‘ new erotic novel Adventures of love centers on the erotic adventures of the guests in the mountain retreat “Alpine fire”. Ulli runs a mountain retreat that caters to tired hikers, offering them a place to recuperate – if they are attractive enough, even in Ulli’s own bed. It’s almost the end of the tourist season when the latest guests arrive: Max, Julian, Giannis, Isa, and the gorgeous Bennet. Ulli realises immediately that she is attracted to Bennet, a successful businessman; but the other male guests spark steamy fantasies as well. And then there is Isa, who likewise does not seem to mind a little excitement with her companions. The retreat becomes the backdrop for a titillating series of sexual escapades. But the question remains: will it be Ulli or Isa who wins Bennet’s heart in the end? The author Diana Schwartz, who admits to being in her early forties, lost her heart to the city of Hamburg early in life. This does not, however, keep her from living in the suburbs with her family. Her work, she says, consists of blending her erotic phantasies into entertaining stories. While writing, she looks out at a larch tree, whose leaves cover up a great deal of excitement, and not just in the spring time. Then she finds an airplane ticket to Germany and a love letter among her grandfather‘s possessions – dated 1993, and signed by someone named Lily. Erin is stunned: she had always known her grandfather as a cold, unapproachable person. And he of all people had a secret beloved? She has since returned to her homeland, where she now lives on a farm in Northern Germany that she shares with her husband and many animals. In writing I wait for you every day she drew on her experience as a book seller and cat owner, as well as on her grandmothers‘ stories to tackle Germany‘s past. The author: Katja Maybach was always a reading addict – even as a child. That led to writing almost automatically, but she has always had a second passion as well: fashion. But these finds are no accident: Emilia, the recently deceased grandmother, used her last days to carefully lay them out, as clues. She hoped to lead the family back from the brink of dissolution – but will the magic of memory be strong enough? The author: Nancy Salchow, born 1981, has been working on novels since childhood. Hoffmann “Greif nach den Sternen, Schwester!” “Reach for the stars, sister!” Knaur HC, September 2014, 304 pages My fight against the Taliban An extraordinary Afghanistan memoir, offering unsuspected insights into a country torn apart by war. This book has the makings of a bestseller: the dramatic story of two sisters, buffeted by world politics, and an incredible triumph against all odds; emancipation in a field dominated by men; fight against the Taliban, escape, and espionage. Sisters Latifa and Lailuma succeed in doing what so many men fail to do: they become helicopter pilots for Afghanistan’s military, breaking the sound barrier of traditional gender roles. As young pilots, they witness the departure of Soviet troops, and fight the mujahideen from their helicopters. But then, a tragic incident separates them for ever. When her sister dies, Latifa has to pick up the pieces – and figure out how to be a mother, wife, and fighter pilot all at the same time. Her answer is as simple as it is courageous: Latifa takes her daughter with her in her helicopter. On her many mission’s for the UN’s ISAF, Latifa takes first a toddler and then a young girl with her and shows her the land she loves and the people for whose freedom Latifa is willing to fight. When Robert Pleyer was first accepted into their ranks more than twenty years ago, he felt liberated. But soon he realised the dependency he had entered into: in the Twelve Tribes, the word of the Elders is law, and they base their power on almost all-encompassing control. Three years ago, Robert Pleyer decided to leave the movement and take his children with him. For the first time, he reveals details of his life in the Twelve Tribes: the god-like position of the Elders, the subjugation of women, violence done to children. His report shows the inhumane side of this sect which forbids its members personal property, compensation for their work, and even visiting doctors except in extreme emergencies. The author: Robert Pleyer was in his early twenties when he joined the Twelve Tribes movement. He broke off his studies, worked in the gardens and in the bakery before being called as a teacher for the sect’s children. He married a daughter of an Elder, and the two had four children. Barth HC, October 2014, 320 pages Practicing yoga can, in the truest sense of the word, shape one’s mind. This sensational insight is documented for the first time in this book. Well-known yoga teacher Anna Trökes and scientist Bettina Knothe examine current neuroscience and consciousness research and find astonishing parallels between the ancient science of India and Western research’s most recent discoveries: yoga not only strengthens the body but also sends healing signals which “write themselves” onto the brain’s deepest structures. The author: Anna Trökes is a pioneer of the German yoga movement. She has been a fixture in the world of yoga teacher training for 30 years and teaches yoga philosophy, pranayama, meditation and advanced hatha-yoga praxis all across Europe. She is also a well-known author of over 20 books. Dr. Bettina Knothe is a biologist with a doctorate in environmental science. BODY-MIND-SPIRIT Gabriele Rossbach Umarme Dich selbst Embrace Yourself Knaur MensSana TB, March 2015, 200 pages Healing coachings after break-ups After break-ups, women often develop characteristic inner conflicts, in which a loss of self-worth and a desire to be loved are only two possible themes that might lead to vulnerability and emotional instability. Relaxation therapist and coach Gabriele Rossbach has had years of experience coaching women through these traps of self-denial, and shows how to resolve their inner patterns of pain. The strength of her coaching are the effective self-reflections and meditations. The author: Gabriele Rossbach trained as a teacher and relaxation therapist. Since 1966 she has been offering workshops and coachings on relaxation, mental health, and meditation. Her work focusses on “centering practice”, a technique she developed, fusing Buddhist and Western approaches to selfdiscovery. BODY-MIND-SPIRIT Antje Maly-Samiralow Das Prinzip Placebo The Placebo Principle Knaur MensSana HC, October 2014, 256 pages Placebos are those pills that don’t work? A deception by doctors? Medical journalist Antje Maly-Samiralow clears up this profound misconception. With The placebo principle, she offers the first popular non-fiction work showing the astounding connections between our psyche and our body’s healing powers. Because science has shown: those who take placebos do get better if their brain is conditioned to success. The healing power is, among other things, confidence, which can cause powerful placebo effects. Negative suggestion, on the other hand, can lead to socalled nocebo effects, which can be detrimental to the patient’s health. Using the newest research, Maly-Samiralow shows how anyone can positively affect their own health and prevent unnecessary nocebo effects. The author Antje Maly-Samiralow, born 1967, is from Thuringia and studied business in Munich. She has been working as an independent author and moderator for ten years, primarily for the Bavarian Radio in Munich, focussing largely on medicine and science. BODY-MIND-SPIRIT Dr. Anne Katherina Zschocke Darmbakterien als Schlüssel zur Gesundheit Intestinal Bacteria as the Key to Health Knaur MensSana HC, November 2014, 304 pages Bacteria’s influence on our health, our immune system, and our mood is profound. More and more illnesses are being shown to have connections with the composition of our intestinal bacteria. Antibiotics have a disastrous effect on intestinal health, as do poor or incorrect hygienic practices and nutrition. If the intestinal ecosystem is balanced, problems such as allergies, diabetes, irritable colon, obesity, and even mental illnesses such as depression and ADHD may completely disappear. Using cutting-edge research, Dr. Zschocke shows us how far-reaching the connections between the intestinal microbiome and a healthy constitution are. She also includes suggestions for keeping one’s intestine in optimal microbial health. NON-BOOKS Peter Grünlich Was hat sich die Evolution bloß dabei gedacht? What was Evolution Thinking?
