The fairboard has been maintaining the grounds this spring and we are confident it will be in great shape come August 3. We just finished a Holstein show that used all but two buildings on the grounds. This turned out to be a great shake-down for the fair. We pride ourselves as having one of, if not the largest animal shows of any county in the state. Our numbers have held or gained for many years. Once again, we expect normal gain for 2011. This year, we have brought back some proven acts anchoring the entertainment building free stage each night. Blurred Vision starts off Thursday night, followed by Hillbilly Mafia on Friday night. Deep Fried Tweeters will pack them in Saturday, and Lost Cause will close out Sunday. If you are leaning toward more excitement, try our grandstand presentations we have put together for you. Wednesday night, free ATV pulls make their first appearance. On Thursday, Night of Destruction makes its annual appearance, wrecking everything in sight. Friday night, Red Sibley County Contacts Sibley County Extension Office 111 8th Street, P.O. Saturday night, Arlington Raceway races again put on a fantastic show. Sunday afternoon the annual Demolition Derby will pull together the best demo drivers around. Many families are pressed for funds again this year so we are trying to provide both free and reduced price events for the whole family. On Thursday, the Bake-andTaste event takes place with prizes of $25 for first, through $10 for fourth. There will be adult and youth divisions. This year’s category is muffins. The rules are in the newly designed Exhibitor Handbook, along with information about the many contests open from experts to klutzes, like me. Other free offerings include Miss Sibley County Queen Coronation on Wednesday, Karaoke night Thursday, Sheephead tournament Friday, Polka church service Sun- day morning, Sr. Citizen day Friday, century farm presentation Sunday, and last but not least judging, judging, judging: 4-H, open class, adult, children, and probably klutz class for people like me. I forget each year to highlight our horse presentation, a program that grows every year. Off and on throughout the fair we will present draft horse demonstrations and tours of the draft horse barn in building 18. The group of volunteers has graciously donated time and equipment for your enjoyment. Please let them know how pleased you are when you visit them. On Saturday, at 8 a.m. the Sheriff’s Posse presents their annual payback game show in the horse arena, east of the race track. On Sunday, the WSCA Open Horse Show starts at 8 a.m. at the horse arena. For Kids’ Saturday, starting at 11 a.m., we present our Kids’ Day program with an animal petting zoo, video racing, pedal pull and drawings for fabulous prizes. Our arm band days, where kids can ride all the carnival rides during a time span for one arm band price will be available again this year. Watch for more information coming soon. I hope this snapshot starts you thinking about the great Sibley County get together. It’s right around the corner and coming on at a lightning speed. I’ll see you there. In fact, undetected vision problems are often mistaken for learning disabilities. You can protect your child with routine professional eye examinations. Children should have an eye exam before entering school and periodically thereafter to detect the presence of existing or developing vision problems. The Thies family lives on dad, Kevin’s home farm of 400 acres which they operate along with Kathleen’s Gardens where strawberries are the main commodity. Kevin, a former member of the Good Cheer 4-H club in Sibley County and in addition to the farm, works part-time at the Winthrop Post Office. Mom, Kathleen also a former 4-Her from Pipestone County, keeps busy with the strawberries and other garden crops. She served as a Sibley County Extension Agent from 1984-88. Kathleen’s Gardens has been in operation for 19 years. Kevin and Kathleen have three sons, Eric, Andrew and Sam. Eric the oldest, a 2007 graduate is a former 4-Her. He attended the University of Nebraska, Lincoln and received his Master’s degree in accounting from the University of Minnesota, and is now employed by AgStar and will be working in Mankato. Andrew is a 2011 Sibley East graduate, where he was a member of the FFA, student council, and participated in track, cross country, and basketball. He has been in 4-H for 13 years, a member of the High Island Clovers and is currently the Presi- dent of the Sibley County 4-H Federation. He also participated in the 4-H Food Show, Job Interview Contest, Share the Fun, Arts In, softball, and livestock demonstrations, at the county and state levels. Andrew served as camp counselor at 4-H camp for 4 years. Summer of 2010, he had the opportunity to serve as a volunteer worker at the Minnesota State Fair FFA Miracle of Birth Center. He worked primarily with poultry and rabbits. It proved to be a very rewarding experience, educating the visitors, and also answering some very funny questions. Like many, Andrew said his favorite part of 4-H is the fair. His livestock projects this year include: poultry, rabbits, pigs, and goats. He will be showing chickens, ducks, geese, and guinea hens for his poultry project. He has shown pigs since he started in 4-H, and rabbits for 6 years, goats for the past 2 years. He will also enter fruits, vegetable gardening, potatoes, and in the wildlife project. This fall, Andrew plans to go to South Dakota State University to study pharmacy. Brother Sam, has been in 4-H for 9 years and will be in ninth grade this fall. He is in track, cross county, basketball, and FFA. He has participated in Demonstration Day, Food Show, Job Interview Contest, The “First Place” to come for animal supplies Share the Fun, and is currently the club Treasurer. Sam’s livestock projects this year include poultry, rabbits, pigs, and goats. He’s also in vegetable gardening, and potato projects. Sam says his favorite project is the Boer goats he shows. He is also taking crop sciences. Both Andrew and Sam also enter their projects in the open class division at the fair. Sam, left, and Andrew, right, are pictured with a few of their 4-H livestock projects. Photo by Joy Cohrs. LIBERTY STATION Affordable Used Cars CHECK OUR FAIR PRICED SPECIALS! The simple joy of seeing old friends and enjoying treasured foods is without compare. However, some fairgoers find an even greater joy – the chance to show off their best and see the efforts of others across the county. For youth in the 4-H program, yearlong projects and experiences culminate in their best work being shown and judged for all to see. 4-H youth take pride in their work and gain a desire for quality in all they do. These same lessons are learned whether participating in citizenship, consumer education, gardening, photography, crafts, fine arts, livestock, nutrition, leadership, or one of the numerous other project areas in 4-H. Preparing fair entries gives youth the satisfaction of seeing a project from start to finish. While these fair entries are an important part of the 4-H experience, opportunities for youth to grow and learn new things continue after the county fair ends. Pro- grams and activities abound, including community pride, demonstration day, the ambassador program, exchange trips, shooting sports, leadership conferences, judging teams, and more. Unique programs such as these offer the chance to gain lifelong skills such as leadership, selfdiscipline, self-confidence, teamwork, public speaking, critical thinking, and time management. This makes 4-H a program with benefits that have lasting impact on children’s lives. The wonderful effects of 4-H would not be possible without the continuous efforts of parents and other volunteers. Whether they are helping with events at the fair, organizing club meetings and activities, or just simply encouraging their children, these dedicated individuals ensure that 4-H runs smoothly. Thanks to all of the parents, volunteers, and organizations who support 4-H. To find out more information about becoming a member of 4-H, and adult leader, or a volunteer, please contact the Sibley County Extension office at (507) 237-4100 or visit the Extension website at http://extension.umn.edu. www.sibleycountyfair.com ARLINGTON DUGOUT BAR 310 W.
