SIBLEY COUNTY FAIR July 30 – August 3, 2014
Page 5
Come visit the ‘Best Little Fair’ in Minnesota
By Dennis Van Moorlehem
Sibley County Fair Board Member
Welcome to the new improved
145th SIBLEY COUNTY FAIR in Arlington.
Every year I dwell on our entertainment and will somewhat again, but
first the news. The board took on a
huge project starting last Aug. 5.
First, thanks in part from sponsorships, we put a brand new metal roof
and ends on the draft horse barn No.
18.
We then, thanks to a Legacy Grant
and sponsorships, lifted the octagon
refreshment stand, put in new footings, block wall up four feet, cooler
inside, concrete walking area around
outside, new drains and water supply.
It now has been stabilized and good
for another 100 years. We are finishing the project as I write this article.
We started our new Heritage Center, heavily leaning on Legacy Grant
and sponsorships, an 80x110-foot
multiple use, new improved commercial building with a stage, dressing
rooms and a rest area to get out of
the weather and just visit in comfort
or visit the booths. We are planning
family entertainment for most of the
day during the fair.
The county FFA organizations,
thanks to a successful financial drive,
are building a new red barn on the
area where the old hoop barn stood.
It will be a multiple-use building housing the petting zoo and activities area
for all ages.
We now are installing drainage and
stable surfaces around the entertainment building and hope to keep our
visitors’ shoes dry.
Let our board know what you think
of our new fair grounds. They have
put in thousands of hours this year.
Our Sibley County Commissioners
stepped up to support our improvements. They have been silent partners
of our fair for 145 years and have not
been recognized, as they should have.
We hope to offer more free days leading to a free fair in the near future.
Now what is happening at the Best
Little Fair in Minnesota? Three animal
judging rings, cattle ring, sheep and
goat ring and hog ring. New barns for
sheep and goats, the draft horse barn
will sport a mini museum, and an ad-
ditional cattle barn. Additional space
in the 4-H building will add much
needed space for them.
Entertainment starts Wednesday
night, Chopper returns after a long absence. The new revamped Sibley
County Queen contest takes place in
the Heritage Center and the first annual Classic Car/Bike Roll In.
Thursday, Lost Highway plays in
the Entertainment Building, and the
Bake and Taste will be in the Heritage
Center.
Friday, stop by for the Free Sweet
Corn Feed and Ron E. Cash, in the Entertainment Center, followed by Night
of Destruction in the Grandstand.
Later, Eagle River closes out the day.
Saturday, the band IV Play will be
in the Entertainment Building, Auto
Racing in the Grandstand, topped off
by Children’s Day.
Sunday, visit our FREE Ranch
Rodeo.
The Heritage Center will have stage
presentations each day. Some of our
presentations are TM Wellness
classes, Zoo Mobile, Pioneer presentations with some great early Minnesota presentations, Pioneer Show
featuring The Civil War story. On Children’s Day, we will have Homeward
Bound kids show, Lilienthal Zoo
show, kids pedal pull, and the Big Bug
show to complete the kids’ day. Sunday we will have the Senior Citizen
show and presentation with the Century Farm recipients. A polka service
and show will enhance the Heritage
Center Sunday offering.
Lastly, our carnival will be ready to
provide top notch rides and wristbands will be available in each town
in the county.
I ran out of room, but you can see
we have been busy setting up the
2014 fair. Come and see, visit and
meet other visitors to the BEST LITTLE FAIR IN MINNESOTA.

SIBLEY COUNTY FAIR July 30 – August 3, 2014
Love found in 4-H at the County Fair.....
By Joy Cohrs
Sibley County Fair Board Member
Back in 1992, Julie Schuch and
Deric Sievert met at the Sibley County
Fair. Julie was a member of the
Weeping Willows 4-H Club and Deric
belonged to the Moltke Happy Hustlers. In the next few years they
started dating and were married in
2002. They now live in Moltke Township north of Gibbon. Deric farms and
Julie is the Sibley County Ag Exten-
sion Educator.
The Sieverts have around 60 Dorset
and Suffolk ewes from which they
raise lambs and sell. Ewes are sheared
early in the year before lambing,
which produces 8-10 pounds of wool
each, which is packed in large bags
holding about 120 pounds. The wool
is taken and sold to a buyer.
Deric has been on the Sibley County
Fair Board since 1999. They have two
children, Cody, 10, and Nicole, 8,
who are members of the Blazin’ West
Stars 4-H Club.
Cody, like most 4-Hers,
says his favorite event is
the fair. This year he will
be showing eight or so
sheep, his Gold Star
chicken, and is rebuilding a
hay rack for his shop project. He is also doing photography, wildlife, bringing
barley for crops and also
vegetable, indoor and
flower gardening.
Cody also enters projects
in Open Class. This year he
plans on showing his
sheep, making a scarecrow
and bringing flowers and
vegetables.
Nicole is a Cloverbud and
will show sheep and chickens. She also will enter
photography, vegetables
and her special “Hymnal

Nicole both participated in their club’s
‘Share the Fun’ skit this year. They
have also helped with Adopt-A-Highway and project ‘Living Snow Fence.’
They enjoyed the educational tour and
also fun activities like snow tubing
and swimming.
Fair time is a very busy time around
the Sievert farm. They are already
busy getting all their projects ready.

Projects finished with ‘Project Dollars’
By Dennis Van Moorlehem
Sibley County Fair Board Member
Last year I wrote about the grants
we received from the Legislature to
build and remodel two buildings on
our fairgrounds. The oldest and in
most needing repair is our refreshment stand.
The octagon building with large outward and inward opening doors
served as a band shell in the Arlington
Hospital Park for many years, probably in the 1800s. As far as we can determine, the band sat in the upper
story and played out all the doors to
the citizens sitting on the grass. The
bottom probably served, then as now,
as a refreshment stand.
Sometime later, it was picked up
and moved through the then main
gate on the east side of the grounds
to its present spot and took on a new
life. It then served as the judge’s
stand for the small horse race track
that ran around it approximately
where the road running past the grand
stand around machinery hill and to the
east of the carnival area. In the early
1940s, the old grandstand was torn
down and the present one facing the
other direction replaced it.
The refreshment stand stood all
alone for many years, an orphan on
the grounds. Later the refreshment
building was constructed next to it
but trouble was on the horizon. The
stand was placed on a slab of concrete when it was moved many years
before. Over time, as gravel was
added to the roads, it was below
grade and water ran in and froze
every winter until the bottom timbers
were rotten.
Flash forward to 2012 when the
legacy grant became available, we applied and received most of the money
needed to rehabilitate it.
Now it is on a foundation with block
bottom, drains, water, updated electricity, a cooler inside, and connected
to the refreshment as before. The
project is a work in progress, so we
will continue to upgrade for the next
few years.
The next project also made possible
by a crying need and a legacy grant.
For years our commercial building
was not set up to be used as such. It
was an animal barn first and foremost.
We listened to booth renters and
visitors and drew up a plan to build a
first rate commercial building. It had
to have a stage, dressing rooms, storage, good lighting, and large doors to
accommodate winter vehicle storage.
Location needed to be adjacent to
food, carnival, and show rings.
We planned to have family entertainment on stage and dressing rooms
used by anyone needing them. Commercial booths would fill the sides and
rear of the building. The area in front
of the stage would be for seating both
at tables and on chairs so visitors
could enjoy entertainment and partake the excellent fair food at the
same time.
The Heritage Building is
nearly done and will accommo-

date all of our projected needs. We
hope to eventually have entertainment and educational stage shows
seven hours a day, Wednesday
through Sunday. All shows will be
family rated and will spotlight past
shows held in the entertainment building for many years. Check our posters
and advertising to see what’s going
on.
Finally, you will see a sign with the
following by each of these buildings
stating:
Project dollars for the refreshment
stand/Heritage building are provided
in part by the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund from the Clean Water Land
and Legacy Amendment through partnership with the Minnesota Department of Agriculture.
This is where the grants we received came from, and we are truly
thankful for the help we received
completing these two projects.

SIBLEY COUNTY FAIR July 30 – August 3, 2014

Time again for the Sibley County Fair
By Paige Lemke
2014 Sibley County 4-H Program
Summer Intern
It is just about time again for the
Sibley County Fair! As the fair nears,
preparations are being made in the
Sibley County 4-H Extension Office
for this exciting time of year!
As the 2014 Sibley County 4-H
program summer intern, my duties include assisting the delightful staff in
the extension office with fair planning
and programs! In preparation for the
fair, I have taken on planning Clothing
Achievement Day, the Round Robin
Premier Showmanship Contest and
Daycare Tours! In addition, all summer long I have been hosting day
camps and a library program for kids
ages Kindergarten through Fifthgrade.
Many of my days in the office include correspondence with families in
the form of letters, posters and
brochures, but those tasks will
quickly be changing when the fair is
here!
To many 4-H members, the Sibley
County Fair becomes a highlight of
their year as they proudly display accomplishments through completing
general projects and showing livestock.
Minnesota 4-H offers over 66 project areas for members to learn, grow
and share life skills and knowledge
they have acquired. Photography,
crafts and fine arts, food and nutrition, shop (wood and metal), clothing
and textiles, self-determined, flower
gardening, Cloverbuds (K-2) and vegetable gardening are among the top
favorites of 4-H members! There is a
project area for every child to explore
their interests and learn in the
process.
Showing livestock is another exciting project area many 4-H members
experience. Poultry, rabbit, dairy,
beef, goat, sheep, swine and llama
are all permitted to be shown at the
Sibley County Fair. If you do not own
livestock, that is alright! The 4-H program can arrange a leasing agreement
with the livestock owners and the 4Hers! Your child can still have the experience of feeding, bedding,
grooming and showing their livestock
regardless if you live on the farm or
in town.
Looking at the big picture, Minnesota 4-H is an astounding and recognized youth program across the
state. In 2013 there were over
65,000 youth in the program alone!
That number does not include the numerous club leaders, parents and over
11,000 volunteers who help to make
our organization impactful! Minnesota
4-H offers many additional opportunities to youth which include statewide
camps,
an
ambassador
program, scholarships and the opportunity to exhibit their projects at the
Minnesota State Fair.
4-H is committed to supporting personal development in youth and community involvement. If you are
interested in learning more about 4-H
or joining Sibley County 4-H as a
member or volunteer to achieve this
mission, please contact the Sibley
County Extension Office at (507)
237-4100 or check out Sibley County
4-H at our website, http://www3.
extension.umn.edu/county/sibley/.
I am looking forward to the fair and
do not be afraid to stop by and say
hello to the Sibley County 4-H Extension staff!

“Since its beginning in 2010,
Carver Creek Bluegrass has delighted audiences with their pleasant mix of Old-time, Bluegrass,
Irish, and Gospel music. Sherry (age
22) plays guitar and mandolin and
also does most of the lead vocals
with her clear sweet voice. Tom
(age 20) plays banjo, guitar, pennywhistle, and musical saw and sings
male lead and harmony. Julie (age
19) plays bass and lends her cheery
voice to the mix. Mary (age 12)
does fiddle and vocals and Jim (age
7) tells jokes and sings. When the
five siblings get together to play
music, there’s never a dull moment.”
