NATURE The Riviera Nayarit is in a privileged location, with several protected areas to its name including the Islas Marietas, a Protected Area categorized as a National Park since 2005 and declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2008. These islands are located in the Banderas Bay (Pacific Ocean) about 5 miles southwest of Punta de Mita, Nayarit. In 1980, Isla Isabel, located north of San Blas, was also declared a National Park and Protected Natural Area, in response to its serving as home to an astounding population of birds. Whales, sea turtles, dolphins, giant mantas and all types of tropical fish live and/or visit the waters of the Pacific, depending on the season. On dry land, the region serves as habitat to a unique variety of endemic and migratory birds, including seagulls, pelicans, frigate birds, eagles and falcons, as well as crocodiles, turtles, jaguars, wild boars, white-tailed deer and raccoons, just to mention a few of the many animals that live in the area.
