The Search Committee has been working on this important project for the past several months. In response to our advertisements, the Club received over 160 resumes for the position. Howard Feldman, Search Committee Chair, and I, invited the top 30 candidates to the Club for hour-long personal interviews. After carefully reviewing our options, 12 candidates Joseph Fulco, CCM, CCE were presented to the Search General Manager Committee for consideration. After several weeks, and another round of interviews, four candidates were selected as finalists. The remaining candidates were pre-screened to ensure that we could close the hire should we decide to. One candidate withdrew his resume due to a counteroffer from his current employer. The three finalists were tasked with preparing two projects for their final interviews: a plan for a Ryder Cup Event that would appeal to the entire Membership, and an operating plan for the new Instructional Facility to include all necessary components of successfully opening and operating it. Additionally, after their final presentations to the Search Committee, each of the three candidates joined Search Committee Members and their spouses, for dinner in the Club’s Restaurant. This social interaction was an outstanding way to get to know the candidates on a more personal level. I am happy to report that I have hired Jason Marciniec to be our next Head Golf Professional. Jason is currently the First Assistant Golf Professional at Oakmont February 2012 Country Club in Pittsburgh. Jason is a Penn State graduate and he has been mentored by Bob Ford for eight years. Bob Ford is a legend in the golf business and his ability to turn out top-rated Golf Professionals is well documented. Jason will join the Cattail Creek Management team in mid-February. Please join me in welcoming Jason to the Cattail family! I would also like to recognize the Members of the Search Committee who volunteered many hours and worked very hard throughout the entire selection process: Jason Marciniec, PGA Head Golf Professional Andy Wilson, President Tom Cole, Vice President Terry Jubb Lisa Anderson Seth Lee Scott Segrist, Gentlemen’s Invitational Chair, Junior Golf Committee Chair Jeff Taylor Rich Abruscato Jim Stewart Howard Feldman, Golf Committee Chair Chris Harriman, Golf Course Superintendent Joe Fulco, CCM, CCE, General Manager If you would like to send Jason a note to welcome him, his email address is [email protected] Sincerely, Joe Joseph C. At this meeting, the new Members typically mention how excited they are to get started, what events they look forward to attending, and which sports they anticipate getting involved Lynn Slupski, Membership Marketing Director with. There is another statement they make at these meetings though, that I wish was not as predictably common as the aforementioned. It goes something like this… ”We were looking around the website with the temporary login we were provided, and we couldn’t believe how many Members we already know. We thought the So-in-so’s were the only ones we knew. Now we’re even more excited!” So many people come in for a tour of the Club, and when asked which Members they know, they will mention one or two families - some even say that they don’t know any current Members! After joining, virtually ALL of them report back to me that once they scrolled through the online Member directory, they found that they actually do know a number of current Members. I call this recurring scenario as the “I didn’t know they were Members” dilemma. During the busyness of day -to-day life, Cattail Creek probably isn’t realistically a topic that always comes up in conversation. February 2012 So I have a challenge and favor to ask of you… Please talk about Cattail! Don’t assume that everyone knows about us. The parent you are talking to at your child’s soccer game, the client you just had lunch with, the neighbors who moved in last year, or the friend you’ve played bunko with for the last 5 years, could all very well be our next new Member at the Club. Despite the numerous amenities and activities we offer to appeal to a variety of interests, many people who may have heard of Cattail, but who aren’t familiar with us, still think of the Club as just being a place to golf. Next time you have the chance, please make it a point to bring up the Club to a non-Member acquaintance or friend. Ask if it would be ok for someone from the Club to email them a little bit of information, and then pass it along to me. If each current Member refers one new Member, this will be a great year indeed! Welcome January New Members! I am honored to become the newest addition to the Cattail Creek family. I have been on location at Cattail Creek since February 4th and assure you that in the Professional Shop we are working very hard to provide you, your family, and your friends a proper golf experience. Joe Fulco and his staff have done a wonderful job welcoming me into the family and I look forward to working with all of them. I would like to take advantage of the off season by inviting all of you to the Club for either a cup of coffee or lunch, or to just sit down so I may get to know you and your family. For those of you who are away, I look forward to your return in the spring and the chance to introduce myself. I am very excited about this year and I hope your visits to the Club are frequent and memorable. If there is anything I can do to enhance your experience for the 2012 season, please feel free to contact me at 410.489.4653 ext. 222 or email me at [email protected]. I was fortunate enough to attend the show this year and as always, there was a lot to see and do! Rather than building up the hype, let me get right to some of the highlights of the 2012 PGA Show. EQUIPMENT TaylorMade introduces the new RocketBallz family to their product line. The RocketBallz driver allows the ability to adjust both the loft and face angle using TaylorMade's FCT (Flight Control Technology), a mainstay through their product line. The RocketBallz fairway wood boasts that you will gain up to 17 yards on your shots! The fairway wood and rescues, feature a Speed Pocket (a channel on the sole of the club) which is to increase clubhead speed for exceptional distance. I hit the three-wood at the show and it definitely comes hot off the face! I love to tinker with different putters and I think that I may have found my next new toy! Callaway and Odyssey golf introduced their new Flip Face putter. Much like the name says, golfers have the ability to flip the face of putter between two surface materials based on the course conditions with just the twist of a screw. The one face of the putter is Callaway's White Ice insert, while the other side showcases their latest creation, Metal-X. The Metal-X insert is a lightweight aluminum cover laid over top of a soft Urethane layer, providing a smooth feel from the putter face. You have to check this putter out! CLOTHING Although tech fabrics, prints, and patterns are still very much at the forefront of golf apparel, there is definitely a resurgence of the classic look to golf clothing. One such company that is true to this ideal is iliac. The products are all handmade and unique, giving the golfer a special tailored look and feel. The fabrics are all lightweight and are designed to function with every aspect of the golf swing. My wife Jane and I were lucky enough to meet Bert LaMar, CEO, Founder, and Designer of iliac; it was great to talk to the man and to see his creations. One of the new exhibitors to the PGA Show was Clazic. The company prides itself on being a contemporary casual belt company, providing a quality belt at an affordable price. The belts are 100% silicone and easily wipe clean of dirt and marks. The straps are available in both solid and perforated and come in six different colors for men and three for women. The true beauty of this belt: it can be cut to the desired size you need! Sizes are printed on the underside of the belt. Simply size, cut, and connect the buckle in a matter of seconds. Look for the Clazic belt in the Golf Shop soon! OTHER ITEMS Golf footwear continues to push towards comfort and a relaxed look. Almost all of the golf shoe companies are offering a shoe that provides maximum comfort with the casual appeal. Ecco, Footj oy, Callaway, Adidas, Ashworth and many others are providing this type of shoe in their spring lines. Be sure to check out these types of golf shoes; your feet will thank you later! Making its way around the country this year will be the Odyssey Putter Fitting truck & trailer. This monster truck will be pulling a trailer loaded with all of the goods to create that custom putter. The trailer features two areas: where the custom putters are created, including coloring, letter stamps, grips, weights, shafts, lengths and more; and a room for relaxing while your custom Odyssey putter is created. I always enjoy attending the PGA Show! Each year there is something new and exciting. To learn more about these items or to inquire about other new golf products for 2012, feel free to drop me a line! www.cattailcreekcc.com 9 at Tales Golf February 2012 Ricky Serrano, PGA Head Teaching Professional it to the gym because I will always find something else that I need to do at that moment instead. Do you have a game plan for your golf game this upcoming season? With the colder weather here, now is a great time to check the grips on your golf clubs. If they are worn out and too slick, have the Golf Shop do the re-grip for you now while we are in the off-season. A new set of grips can run from $8-15 each, depending on the brand. If we don’t have your preferred grip in-stock, we can order them in no time! Your re-gripped clubs can be ready for you in just a couple days time, and when the spring weather comes calling, you’ll be glad that you took care of the maintenance during the winter! Please contact any member of the Golf Professional Staff to arrange for this service; we can also assess your clubs to help determine whether they need to be re-gripped yet. Cattail Creek Golf Shop 410.489.4653 ext. 221 www.cattailcreekcc.com 10 at Tales Golf GREEN UPDATE Chris Harriman Golf Course Superintendent February is here already and winter is still taking its sweet time to come out and play. While this is great news for getting work completed on the Golf Course in the current time, it may mean for a very slow start to the spring. Only time will tell. The new satellite control system is completely installed now on the front nine, and work continues on the back nine. These new control boxes replace three different types of boxes that used to be installed on the Course. The old satThe new box on #5 hosts over 30 ellite boxes required different wires for individual sprinkler constant attention heads, and power & communication controls. The new the soil. system is virtually maintenance free, and both reliability and efficiency will increase exponentially. The entire irrigation system will now be able to be controlled from our cell phones as long as we have service. The newer technology will also allow us to better utilize the recently refreshed pump system. Using the pumps to their potential will increase efficiency in water use and reduce water run times at night saving electricity and wear on the piping system. All-in-all, this is an outstanding, and much appreciated addition to the Golf Course. February 2012 In addition to the satellite control boxes, we are also replacing 200 more sprinkler heads in select areas around the Course. Last season we saw serious improvements after replacing about 50 heads in hot spots around the fairways, tees and greens. During a normal golf round it is hard to understand why all of these heads need to be replaced. However, when the sprinklers are up and running; water is wasted because of a very poor distribution pattern as well as leaks from the heads themselves. The newer heads slip right into the current casing in the soil and provide excellent distribution and water use efficiency. We hope to have all the heads installed with new yardages on the caps by Men’s Club Opening Day. We have still experienced some weather that has forced us to stay inside this winter. This is a good thing since all of the ball washers, benches, tee markers, cups, flagsticks, bunker rakes, hole signs, water coolers, hazard stakes, machinery and maintenance facility itself have to be cleaned, washed, striped, sanded, scraped, pressure washed, painted, waxed, polished, clear coated and put back together. Phew!! You may have noticed that trash cans were omitted from that list and that is because we have purchased recycled black plastic trash cans that will not need any maintenance for a number of years. All of this tedious work that keeps up indoors, is balanced by the bonus of staying out of the miserable weather outside. I hope you can take advantage of the nicer days this winter, but I also hope that we can get some good skiing in sooner rather than later so that spring doesn’t wait until May to show up! www.cattailcreekcc.com 11 at Tales Tennis/Pool February 2012 Coach Karen will be selecting 4 Junior Coaches for the 2012 Crocs Swim Team Season.
