ST. TERESA HIGH SCHOOL BULLDOG BIZ STUDENTS PARENTS ALUMNI FRIENDS ISSUE 29 | April 2014 St. Teresa Honors Joe Venturi IN THIS ISSUE: St. Teresa honored the successful coaching and Letter from the Principal teaching career of the late Mr. Joe Venturi in January Student Achievement with a dedication ceremony and renaming of the Service school gym. The naming of “Joe Venturi Gymnasium” School Events was conducted prior to the Boys’ varsity basketball Alumni game. Because of the benevolence of Jack and Barbara Donor Recognition McCoy, the dedication and related naming rights were made possible. Joe Venturi was head basketball coach and athletic director at St. Teresa from 19491960. Mr. Venturi was instrumental in the funding and building of St. Teresa’s gym in 1957. Teams coached under Mr. Venturi were successful and won regional championships in 1953 and 1956. Rick Venturi, Joe’s eldest son spoke at the dedication on behalf of the Venturi family. ST. TERESA HIGH SCHOOL 2710 North Water Street | Decatur, IL 62526 P 217-875-2431 | F 217-875-2436 | ST-TERESAHS.ORG A LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Friends & Families, It has been another outstanding and successful academic year at St. Teresa. Within this edition of the Bulldog Biz, you will read about seventeen (17) St. Teresa seniors who were named Illinois State Scholars. Throughout my 41 years as an educator/administrator, I don’t believe I’ve ever had such a large percentage of senior students (21%) who have earned this prestigious award. Also, there will be twenty-seven (27) seniors graduating from St. Teresa with twelve (12) or more college credit hours that can be transferred to a college of their choice. The Richland Community College Dual Credit program taught on the St. Teresa Campus continues to thrive. There are 65 students (duplicated count) enrolled in four (4) AP Classes this year – AP Chemistry, AP English, AP History and AP Calculus. St. Teresa remains “on top” of the academic options for college preparatory students in the Central Illinois area. The high expectations of teachers and parents help to allow our students to succeed. Out of a total of 265 students, 202 students at St. Teresa made the honor roll during the first semester of the 2013-14 school year. Students and faculty should be congratulated!! I have no doubt that St. Teresa will continue to prosper in the future. Your support is necessary to move our facility and instructional needs forward and provide the very best opportunities for the students of St. Teresa. If you have been following the IHSA “Success Factor” debate recently, please be assured that St. Teresa WILL NOT be penalizing our students for their successes in the classroom!! Those of us here at St. Teresa are truly ....... Called to Serve Kenneth C. Hendriksen, Ph.D Principal/CEO Capital Campaign Developments An ambitious campaign was launched three years ago to repair, renovate and expand the school’s capital infrastructure. This campaign was titled “Believe-Build-Become” and has surpassed approximately $6,500,000 in pledges and donations. These funds fully satisfy the costs associated with three phases of work conducted during the summers of 2011, 2012 and 2013, highlighted by the centerpiece of the campaign, the construction of a new physical education annex presently being built north of the gym. It is scheduled to be completed in May 2014. The visible results of the campaign are that the school is much improved and in its best condition in over 50 years. But the real testament of the campaign lies with the generosity of many people, corporations, trusts, organizations, bequests and foundations that have made this effort a real success. The staff, faculty and students salute all those who have donated time, talent and treasure, and those who prayed for the success of this campaign and the remarkable achievements reached to date. Notable activity related to the campaign: • $191,000 donation by Don and Ron Bretz • Donations by the St. Teresa Educational Foundation to both the operating fund and capital campaign of $800,00 • $108,000 additional Burney Trust funds Recent emphasis has rightly focused on the school’s operating budget as well as construction of the new PE annex. Yet, as a reminder, the STHS Board of Directors has authorized the Principal/ CEO to commence planning for the $2.5 million artificial turf and partial track installation. This planning can proceed when all costs associated with the campaign and PE annex 2 Winter Sports 2013-14 Re-cap Boys Basketball Final Record - 25-4 Okaw Valley Conference Champions UNDEFEATED - 11-0 St. Teresa Team Soy Christmas Tournament Champions Macon County Tournament 3rd Place Okaw Valley Conference Tournament 3rd Place Christian Williams IBCA 1st Team All State AP 1st Team All State 1st Team All-Okaw Valley Conference (unanimous) 1st Team All-County - Herald & Review Passed 1,000 career points this season Madison Velchek Selected to play in the Heart of Illinois All-Star Game Jordan Laukaitis 2nd Team All-Okaw Conference Honorable Mention All-County - Herald & Review George Duncan Honorable Mention All Okaw Conference Honorable Mention All-County - Herald & Review Selected to play in the Heart of Illinois All-Star Game John Radley Honorable Mention All-County - Herald & Review Christian Williams Voted First-Team All-State St. Teresa junior Christian Williams was voted first-team in Class 2A on the Associated Press All-State basketball team. Artists include Marie Less, Kaylie Ruderman, Bethanie Couri, Ian McKeown, Alexa Tucker and Rosie Waite. 6 SCHOOL EVENTS “Jesus Christ Superstar “Presented by Drama Department St. Teresa’s spring musical, Jesus Christ Superstar was held March 7th and 8th. Starring underclass veterans Sophia Schwalbach as Mary Magdalene, Cole Burdick as Judas Iscariot, and David A. Monk, a senior, as Jesus Christ, was directed by Mary Midiri-Davis and choreographed by Cami Kerns. Cole Burdick with Vanessa Cundiff, Mallory Though facing a formidable score, musical directors Baker and Keyari Paige Rick Strine and Rae Ann DeSutter were undaunted in preparing the cast for what was one of the most difficult musical selections ever performed on St. Teresa’s stage. The show’s orchestral pit featured a rock combo conducted by John Gorecki. Veteran crew members Ryan Finley and Sam Tatham coordinated lights and sound. Seniors Caroline Forster and Erin Kurecki served as Student Director and Stage Manager, respectively. Seniors Annie Kefalas, Nathan DeSutter, Kevin Nutakor, D.J. Baker, Claire Glosser, Vanessa Cundiff, Luke Plossel and Melanie Anselmo were also featured in their last major high school production in roles such as Annas, Peter, Simon the Zealot, Caiphas the High Priest, and King Herod. David Monk as Jesus Christ Catholic Schools Week Catholic schools are noted for their faith-based education, academic excellence, and commitment to service. This year’s National Catholic Schools Week theme was Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service. National Catholic Schools Week is the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. St. Teresa observes National Catholic Schools Week with a Mass and other activities for students and faculty. Through these events, St. Teresa focuses on the value Catholic education provides to young people and its contributions to our church, our communities and our nation. 7 SCHOOL EVENTS St. Teresa Student Retreats Students at St. Teresa have opportunities for retreats each school year. Freshmen partake in a one-day retreat, sophomores have a 24-hr Quest retreat, and juniors are encouraged to participate in TEC within the diocese. For seniors however, Kairos is a 3 night-4 day retreat designed to give students a solid foundation before they leave for college. “It’s an opportunity to give the senior class a way to bond themselves together outside the classroom,” Said Dan Boynton, Director of Retreats since 2007. “Faithbuilding is the focus and everything about this retreat supports that. We want them grounded in their faith and into their parishes and churches before they graduate.” Student leaders agree. Chiara Evelti, Bethanie Couri, Madison Velchek and Adam Peters were four of the eleven senior leaders for this year’s girls and boys retreats. “Kairos is a way to get away from school and concentrate only on these spiritual activities,” said Madison. “The growth from the first day when people arrive to the last day is incredible. To see them involved and emotional is humbling, especially to know we had a part of that growth.” “It brings you back to center, “ said Bethanie. “You block out all the noise. It’s very centering.” Having a retreat away from the school allows students to get away from the day to day activities that can distract them. “Students’ phones are their bus tickets – we collect them so they aren’t distracted and can focus on spiritual growth,” said Dan. “It helps to leave the world behind. “ Leaders were most enthusiastic about the quality time they were able to spend with each other, especially before they graduate. “Being around the same group of guys four straight days really brought us together,“ said Adam. “We learned things about each other we didn’t know, even after going to school for four years.” “I got to be close to my classmates and developed great friendships,” said Chiara. “We concentrate on religious aspects and I got to experience that with the whole class. Serving as a leader enabled me to actually affect others in a positive way. “ SPOTLIGHT ON Spot-Light on Alum Michael Copeland, Class of ‘59 8 I was enrolled into first grade at St. Patrick’s Grade School sometime between 1945-46. I completed the eighth grade in 1955 and I graduated from St. Teresa in 1959. Everything in my path had to do with the education I received at St. Teresa. The teachers and the coaching staff embedded in us the formula of success and I’ve always carried that mentally throughout my careers. What made me join the Marine Corps was hearing Coach Venturi always talking about how members from the military would leave the military and get contracts to play pro football. So, in August 1962 I enlisted into the US Marine Corps. Upon completing boot camp I saw that my Series Commander 1stLt Dixon was the star running back for the Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) team. I went to him and asked if I could try out with the depot team. He took me to where the team was practicing and I got a chance to try out. Although I had to leave that day and complete my further training at a different base, I was informed that I would be brought back for the spring training in 1963- I made the team. At that time, I was stationed at MCRD, San Diego playing football and basketball. I got transferred to Subic Bay, Republic of the Philippines around July 1964 and I was there for one month and received orders to report to the Hawaiian Marines Basketball team. This was when the 1964 Olympic Basketball Team was in route to Tokyo, Japan to attend the Games so I got a chance to play against them. In August 1968 I received orders to report to South Vietnam for duty. I served 14 months in Vietnam and was awarded the Purple Heart for the wounds I received; however, I only served one tour. Some of the other duties I’ve held include becoming a Marine Corps Drill Instructor training enlisted at Parris Island, SC and Officers at Quantico, VA. From there, I went on to complete a thirty year career and a retired a Master Gunnery Sergeant (MGySgt). Upon completing my Marine Corps career I got a chance to teach Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) in Naples, Italy. I taught there for fourteen years (1994 to 2008). And now I’m retired and living on the eastern shore of North Carolina. In closing, I would like to express that all of what I have accomplished in my life, I owe it to my education at St. Patrick’s Elementary School and St. Teresa High School. But most of all, I owe a big gratitude to Coach Joe Venturi. Faculty and Staff Wish List There are many items that St. T faculty and staff would love to have that don’t fit in the yearly operational budget. Teachers end up spending their own money for some of the items, while bigger ticket items they do without. The library is requesting an LCD projector, but the “wish” would be for every classroom to have one. “Projectors are used for a variety of purposes. Teachers used them to project power points, student projects, use the internet, and to show online demonstrations and films. We have teachers that check them out every day, but it is getting harder to coordinate and schedule them because demand is so high,” explains Librarian Laura Brosamer-Singer. Donating items on the wish list is a way to directly help students immediately. The faculty and staff is appreciative of the items parents and St. Teresa supporters provide, whether it’s Band Aids and tissues or much needed equipment like projectors and dvd players. Last year, the Class of 1953 donated two color printers and a TV to the school. Here is a list of current Department wishes. If you have these items at home and don’t need them, we’ll take them as long as they are in good condition. Or, the school can purchase them if money is donated. Call the school at 217/8752431 for more information. • • • • • • • Art – gauges of wire, adhesives, glues and paint brushes (all sizes) Drama-body microphones ($350 each) English- TV, DVD , VCR and Blue-ray players Library -LCD projector ($400-$600) Math – Calculators (scientific $15-$20 each, graphing $130-150 each) Music- Sound mixer (approx.. $400-$700) Science- rock and/or mineral kits, hot wheels and hot wheel tracks for Physics • • • Remember Them? The Bretz brothers were the youngest of five and graduated from St. James grade school. “We were just a good, close-knit family that wanted to give back for all these years,” said older sister Frances. “I am sure they are smiling down knowing this donation will help the school.” Don, who died in 2009 worked in silk screening shops and painted houses most of his life. Ron, who died in 2012 retired from Firestone after working for 34 years. The brothers also ran a convenience store, Kenbrook, which was located on former Broadway St. “The two were very tight brothers,” said nephew John. ST.
