February Meeting Minutes
February’s meeting saw a great surge in attendance. Over 300 people crowded into the American Legion Hall for the second montly meeting of
2008 (just kidding).
New President, Barbara Jackson, brought the
meeting to order. Since we had quite a few new
members and guests, Barbara asked for introductions and some background from these new
visitors.
The upcoming annual Pond Tour was discussed,
including our need for Ponds to show and volunteer Docents and Ticket Takers.
We discussed prepartations for the San Mateo
Home and Garden Show, and our participation
with an informational booth and a display, this
year, of Koi in a show tank.
A sign-up sheet was passed around for the 2008
Cherry Blossom Festival in April. We still need
more volunteers to work the tables and hand out
flyers on the Pond Tour. Barbara reminded everyone that participation in Club Events made them
eligible for a complimentary Christmas Dinner.,
The first annual Koi Club Calendar was discussed. Because of the cost for printing, the
calendar will be available as a download on the
web site (without the photos) and on a CD from
Carole Bruch.
Mike Perret went over the Koi Growout contest
again. Although checks were to be in for the
February meeting, because of a delay in receiving
the Koi from Japan, payments can be made at the
March meeting. After a year of growing, the Koi
will be judged and the 10 best will be featured in
an issue of the Splash newsletter.
Pizza’s and cookies were served during the refreshment break - YUM!
Bob Long’s name was drawn for the Attendance
Incentive, but he was not at the meeting.
Larry Templeton and Ken Snarr delivered a presentation on upgrading a Kit pond.

Well, we just can’t seem to give money away.
Hard as we try, we have not been able to select
any member’s names of that small group willing
to attend meetings regularly. So much the better
for that lucky member attending one of the next
meetings when his or her name is called. Be there
or be square!

2008 Club Calendar Available
For the past few months, Carole Bruch has
been working on a 2008 Club Calendar to
distribute to all of our members. A PDF of
this calendar is now available on the club
web site, unfortunately without the photos because of the large file size. Anyone
wishing a copy of the full calendar should
contact Carole Bruch at the next meeting.

Koi Growout Contest Update
Hi All
I am updating the koi growout contest information. After speaking with Russell Peters of PSKoi, I find that the next shipment
will be coming in around mid April. So we
will have the fish available to us in the early
part of May. This is good as it gives the fish
a chance to continue to grow in Japan for a
couple more months!
Also, due to the high response rate (now 37
fish ordered), I will extend the deadline for
entry until March 21st. That is the date of
the next meeting.
If you already signed up, please send me
your entry form and check ASAP. If anyone
has any questions regarding the contest, feel
free to contact me at
(408) 226-7802.
Regards
Mike Perret
Editor’s Note:

Let’s Get Serious!
By Terry Denevan
The mission of the Santa Clara
Valley Koi and Water Garden Club
is to educate the public about Koi
and water gardens. We are organized to accomplish that goal. We
have the structure, the expertise, the
time, and the relative funding at our
disposal.
We are a non profit organization.
Our Executive Board and our Board
of Directors are drawn from our
membership. Each officer is a volunteer. While we have
many volunteers for
meetings and activities
during the year…..We
could always use a few
more. The Club needs
YOU.
We participate in the
San Mateo and the
Santa Clara Home and
Garden Shows. Each
year we have an information booth
at the Cherry Blossom Festival in
Cupertino.
Our moneymaker each year is our
Annual Pond Tour.
Our club maintains a library and a
warehouse of equipment.
This year we made scholarships to:
SLV High Aqua Culture Dept. and
two deserving Aqua Culture students.
Six times each year we have garden
and pond social events at selected
members’ homes.
Each December we have a special
Santa Clara Valley Koi and Water Garden Club
dinner. It is open to all members.
Those having volunteered their time
during the year are given free tickets
to this enjoyable event.
Our club holds monthly meetings.
We have a speaker at each of these
gatherings. A portion of each meeting is allocated to answer members’
questions regarding pond problems.
Light portions of food or dessert are
usually served.
always free to members.
Each year some of our members
travel, on their own, to Japan for koi
selection.
With a tranquil garden, filled with
the sounds of water and the colorful
animation of selected fish, a serenity at day’s end can await those who
wish to participate. Our club can
help make these things possible,
Of concern is that many
new members join our
club, use our resources,
and build a pond…only
to stop attending our
meetings. Too often
they drop out of our
club. They are missed.
Our Leadership Meetings are held
each month at 528 Minnesota
Avenue in San Jose. Members are
encouraged to attend. Warm chocolate chip cookies or freshly made
brownies await those attending.
(408) 279-4567.
The greater the membership and the
greater our monthly turn out, the
greater our pool of volunteers.
Most of our members have ponds or
water gardens. We have members
who design, build, and/or maintain
koi ponds. Some of our members
have a high level of sophisticated
knowledge regarding koi. Over
one hundred years of accumulated
know-how is always available, and
It is my hope that we
are able to not only attract people to our club
and help them with our free and
sophisticated resources…but that
we might create a social atmosphere
that encourages people to become
friends, volunteers, as well as active
participants in the governing of our
club.
As noted above: The organization,
expertise, longevity, and funding of
our club is on solid ground…very
solid ground.
Without attendance, we have no
club. Without volunteers, we have
no club. Without officers, we have
no club.
