LETTER FROM
THE MD
“Judging by the conversations I had with industry leaders at the
Global Manufacturing Festival in Sheffield earlier this year, demand
for UK manufactured goods has increased and there is a renewed
sense of purpose and optimism.
During the festival Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg talked about
manufacturing success stories in the UK and emphasised the
importance of manufacturing and engineering to the economy as we
come out of the recession.
The opening of our Sheffield office has certainly been a success
story for Waldeck and we have recently moved to bigger premises
and recruited more staff (see p10) to meet the growing demand,
particularly from the manufacturing and heavy industry sectors.
Since the first Inspire newsletter was published, in addition to our
Sheffield operation we’ve also opened a new office in Grimsby to
extend our reach across the Humber region from Hull down into
North-East Lincolnshire.
Although our work is B2B and B2C Waldeck is first and foremost
a P2P or people-to-people organisation, and client satisfaction has
been and always will be the cornerstone of our business.
10
This is the reason why we’re committed
to hiring people who are experts in
their field and have a proven track
record of success. Our latest recruit
Peter Webber is an experienced
Chartered Building Services Engineer
and a CIBSE-registered low carbon
consultant and will be heading up
our new M&E and Renewable services
Department (see p4).
By expanding our range of services we can now
offer all things engineering under one roof and
provide a more comprehensive and cost-effective
solution to our clients’ construction needs.
07
I hope you enjoy reading the second edition of
our newsletter and if you have any comments or
queries please don’t hesitate to email me at
[email protected].”

Developer
Innovative design pays dividends
for developers
Using their creativity and in-depth knowledge gained from years
of experience, Waldeck’s team of engineers can save developers
thousands of pounds by eliminating unexpected development costs
and providing innovative and sustainable design solutions.
Whether it’s a residential, retail or industrial development or a business
or science park Waldeck can provide a one-stop civil, structural and
sustainable engineering design service.
In recent months Waldeck has completed a number of successful
projects in the housing sector, including one for David Wilson Homes’
South Midlands office which was granted planning permission in March
2011 to build 176 houses on land off Banbury Lane in Northampton.
As well as the design and detailing of the civil engineering works,
Waldeck undertook the transportation assessment and plan and the
flood risk assessment on the 7.15 ha site.
The majority of people who initially objected to the scheme were
concerned about additional flood waters entering a nearby brook. The
application was granted, however, only after Waldeck managed to prove
to the Environment Agency and the planning committee that these
concerns were unfounded.
Waldeck’s Head of Developer Services Tony Chapman explained:
“We incorporated SUDS which replicate the greenfield runoff on the
current undeveloped site, and because we’re maintaining the natural
flow regimes there won’t be any additional water flowing into the
adjacent water course.”
Waldeck’s specialist engineers also used their innovative approach
on a project in Malpas, Cheshire to develop a magnificent £5 million
mansion. (see above image)
NRI Contractors Ltd appointed Waldeck to produce a sustainable
drainage solution which wouldn’t intrude on the aesthetics of the
proposed Chidlow Hall development. Waldeck also used the storm
water outfalls to form complementary design features.
“We help local and national developers of housing schemes and
commercial projects to overcome planning issues using our creative
expertise and previous experience,” concluded Tony.
“Our success in both of these cases was mainly down to our
innovative and flexible design work and close liaison with partner
organisations and stakeholders, including the architects, and the
Environment Agency.”

Waldeck’s team of sector-specific technical experts is
constantly considering how the latest advances in technology,

improving competitiveness in the European construction industry.
As well as keeping up to date with changes in the law, Waldeck
is keen to embrace new technology and has installed Tekla® BIM
(Building Information Modelling) software.
To strengthen its commitment to maintaining the highest possible
standards Waldeck has promoted Associate Director Paul Byrne as
Head of Technical Services to keep abreast of progress within the
industry as well as changes in legislation.
This enables its engineers to create and manage accurately detailed
and logically constructed 3D structural models of the projects they’re
working on.
Last year a suite of new British Standards for structural design,
based on European standards often called Structural Eurocodes,
replaced conflicting national structural design standards which have
been withdrawn by the British Standards Institution (BSI).
“Thanks to this new efficient way of working we can now focus
on the things we do best: winning bids and planning, managing
and delivering first-class projects, enabling us to deliver the best
possible services for our customers.” comments Paul Byrne.
Structural Eurocodes are a set of European design standards which
have introduced a common technical language and a common
technical culture in structural design and are aimed at widening and
3D models can be used throughout the entire building process
from conceptual design to fabrication, erection and construction
management. 3D draughting allied to BIM allows more aesthetically
pleasing, structurally challenging yet economically viable
designs.
Using interactive drawing formats and video erection
sequences our team of experienced and innovative engineers
can produce designs tailored to contractors’ construction
programmes.
Automatic referencing and clash-checking ensure an efficient,
economic and effective project and accurate, model-based
communication enables better constructability through
finding, reacting to and correcting
possible design errors
early before on-site
construction.

“Although we’ve been working hard on a number of major retail
projects including a new Ocado customer fulfilment centre in North
Warwickshire and an £11 million extension at Queensgate Shopping
Centre in Peterborough, we’ve also been busy improving our own
shop window.
“Over the past 12 months we’ve opened four new offices and expanded
our offering to include mechanical and electrical engineering and
renewable technology services so we decided it was time to bring the
Waldeck website and brochures up to date to reflect these changes.
“Although we continue to grow our ethos remains the same whether
we are working on Mr and Mrs Kyme’s new garden room in Quarrington
(p9) or a £7 million project for the University of Nottingham (p10).
“Waldeck’s core beliefs are creativity, passion and commercial
acumen and our talented and experienced engineers are some of the
most innovative and forward-thinking in the industry today.
“We hope the new Waldeck website reflects the company culture of
creativity and the high level of customer service we provide. The site has
been constructed using the blogging platform WordPress which allows
visitors to comment on news stories and case studies and share the
pages using social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter.
“Post tagging allows visitors to instantly access

Every project is
important
Project: Construct a new garden room
Client: Mr and Mrs Kyme
As well as working on major national projects Waldeck
undertake Civil and Structural engineering works for smaller
clients who are just as important including Mr and Mrs Kyme
in Quarrington near Sleaford, Lincolnshire.
The project involved replacing the couple’s existing conservatory
with a large garden room comprising brick cavity walls, a tiled roof
with Velux windows and large areas of glazing to preserve the light.
Waldeck carried out a measured survey of the conservatory and
provided detailed drawings and structural calculations for the new
garden room .
The clients wanted a vaulted ceiling to create the illusion of more
space so Waldeck designed a steel ridge with associated cranked
steel beams to create a clean ceiling line.
The design also included an extension to the existing foundations
to support the new masonry walls and timber roof.
Waldeck also liaised with the local authority and submitted the
planning and building regulation forms on behalf of the clients to
obtain the necessary approvals.
“I employed Waldeck about 8 years ago when I made the
biggest investment decision of my life and that was to buy
my first home. The mortgage survey had picked up a couple
of potential issues requiring the input of a suitable expert
which I’m pleased to say Waldeck investigated and resolved
the concerns. They dealt with it all quickly and efficiently and
helped take a lot of the stress out of the situation because
they explained it all so well and what would happen next.
“I am able to give this reference easily because I’ve just had
them back to sort my extension and loft conversion job out
now we have a bigger family and I’ve got to say, the service
is still top notch and I would not hesitate in recommending
them to anyone.” Lisa Kyme – private house owner
Fire damage to Broad
Acres, Leasingham,
Lincolnshire.
In January 2011 a fire ripped through the roof space of a large
detached house in Leasingham, Lincolnshire. Luckily the
owner had left the property just minutes before the fire was
said to have started.
Waldeck was appointed by the insurers to assess the property in
terms of its structural integrity following the fire. The first priority
was to ensure the structural stability of the dwelling which had
lost most of the roof and upper floor; this led to the design of a
complex temporary scaffold structure.
Upon further investigation none of the original attic trusses were
able to be salvaged and an entire new trussed roof system was
designed. Internally all existing floors and walls were tested for
levels of damp as the building had been left open to the elements
for some time prior to the protective scaffold being erected in
addition to the significant amount of water that was used in putting
out the blaze.
Works are continuing and the owner is hoping to be back in his
property later this year. Waldeck is working closely with a local
architect and with careful planning is looking to complete the
project ahead of time and under budget

Waldeck has been appointed to work on a £3 million project to
create an Elite Athletes’ Performance Centre and a four-storey
student accommodation block at Loughborough College.
Waldeck is working alongside international architecture firm
Benoy on a circa £7 million project to construct a permanent
home for the Institute of Mental Health (IMH).
The college’s existing Gables hall of residence site will be
transformed into the state-of-the-art facility which will provide
purpose-built accommodation as well as access to top-quality
sports coaching and pastoral care for elite sportsmen and women
aged between 16 and 18.
The four-storey building on the University of Nottingham’s Jubilee
Campus will incorporate a mixture of office and teaching space.
Waldeck is responsible for the design and detailing of the structural
and civil engineering element of the scheme which includes the steel
framework, foundations, drainage and rainwater attenuation systems.
Waldeck is also undertaking the civil and structural engineering
work for a brand new hall of residence in place of an existing
accommodation block on Forest Road.
Waldeck Associate Director Dan Wright explained: “This will certainly
be a visually striking building. The team at Benoy has incorporated
glazed terracotta panels into the design to provide continuity with the
surrounding architecture.
The new-build timber-framed building will consist of 70 onebedroom apartments and has been designed with future flexibility
in mind. The college will have the option of removing the internal
walls should it be subject to change of use.
“The state-of-the-art facility will incorporate the TermoDeck® flooring
system, which uses the thermal storage capacity of the building’s
structural mass to regulate the internal temperatures, and will be
BREEAM (BRE Environmental Assessment Method) Excellent rated.”
Waldeck’s Associate Director Dan Wright said: “The new Elite
Athletes’ Performance Centre will strengthen the town’s already
impressive sporting credentials and will play an important role in
the London 2012 Olympics.
Richard Wigginton, Capital Projects Officer at the University of
Nottingham, added: “We are pleased to be working with Waldeck
and Benoy on this very exciting project.
“Waldeck has been involved with a number of projects within
the education and sports and leisure sectors recently, ranging
from small refurbishments to major new-build facilities, and
we are keen to gain more work in this field.”
“The commitment to the construction of the bespoke new
accommodation signals the strength of partnership between the
University of Nottingham, and Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS
Trust as the co-founders of the Institute of Mental Health.”

AWARDS
Waldeck supports
National Youth
Awards
The contributions young people make to
their communities used to go unnoticed,
but not any more thanks to a former
national newspaper journalist.
In 2006 Tony Gearing decided to set up YOPEY (Young People of the
Year) to give the younger generation a fairer image and to encourage
more young people to give to the community.
The pair received a share of the £1,000 prize money, some of which also
went to their chosen charities.
“All the finalists at last year’s event were winners; not just
winners for the night but winners going forward into the future
as, like all successful people, they had a positive and can-do
attitude,” said Paul.
“We’re delighted to sponsor two awards this year and I look forward
to meeting more young people who’ve made a real difference to the
communities in which they live and seeing them gain the recognition
they deserve.”

This year Waldeck is supporting the YOPEY awards in Northamptonshire
for the second year running and for the first time in Cambridgeshire.
Last year Managing Director Paul Waldeck was one of a 20-strong panel
which had the difficult job of judging the Northamptonshire awards.
Joe Dilley (21), who turned his life around after getting in trouble with
the police for anti-social behaviour, and Stephen Shippey (19), who
went from sleeping rough to being a fledgling youth worker, were jointly
named Northamptonshire Police Young People of the Year.

Creativity is what drives Waldeck. It’s in the
way we design and in how we add value to our
clients’ projects while still reducing the budget.
We’re always encouraging our staff, whatever
part of the business they work in, to think
outside the box and to reward them for their
great ideas we’ve introduced a bi-monthly

external Awards
As mentioned on page four Waldeck
triumphed in the Sustainable Housing
Awards 2010 for the £1.1m Unity Gardens
development of six single-storey two and
three-bedroom homes in Long
Sutton near Spalding, Lincolnshire.
In addition to this accolade
Waldeck is also delighted to
have been awarded a Gold
Certificate for Customer
Satisfaction based on
the results of a recent
BenchmarQ Customer Satisfaction survey
as well as the ISO 9001 and 14001
accreditations.
Waldeck Director Andrew Dent
explained how important customer
satisfaction is to the company: “We
have a constant dialogue with our clients
and are always looking for new ways
to improve and develop our service
level.
“We take nothing for granted and we’re
therefore delighted we have achieved the
Gold award in 2011. We will continue to
strive to exceed our clients’ expectations
wherever possible.”
Community
Commitment
Pro-fessional help for local communities
Waldeck is committed to supporting the
local communities it works in and helping
voluntary and not-for profit organisations
by providing its services free of charge.
Last year Waldeck signed up to ProHelp, a
national network of over 1,000 professional
firms committed to making a difference in
their local community by giving free advice
and professional support.
Thez first job in February for
Northamptonshire ProHelp involved a
structural condition survey of the Kings
Heath Community Centre for the Need
to Know Centre which provides help and
advice to people in the Kings Heath area,
particularly with regard to housing, debt and
employment.
The organisation has broadened its activities
over the past 10 years and the committee
approached Northampton Borough Council
about leasing Kings Heath Community
Centre to provide some extra space.
As well as the Northamptonshire group
Waldeck has joined the Nottinghamshire,
South Yorkshire, North-East Lincolnshire
and Lincolnshire ProHelp groups and
recently carried out a structural survey
of Scamblesby Village Hall near Louth in
Lincolnshire.
“The professional firms undertake one-off
projects which can include feasibility studies,
structural surveys, marketing and business
plans, legal and accountancy advice and
property valuations.
“Without firms such as Waldeck, who
provide pro bono services to not-for-profit
groups, ProHelp would not exist and many
community organisations would not be able
to afford the professional services they
desperately need.”
ProHelp Co-ordinator Lezli Hall explained:
“There are 33 ProHelp groups in city, urban
and rural locations across the country.
“Each ProHelp group is a local network
of professional firms, each supported
by a manager who acts as a broker and
matches the needs of the community
organisation with the professional firm such
as Waldeck which has offered its support.
Waldeck director faces
next challenge
Waldeck Director Martin Osborne from Peterborough conquered the
highest mountain in Africa last year and is now attempting to trek
40km from Cusco to Machu Picchu in Peru.
Last year Martin climbed Mount Kilimanjaro to raise money for charity
in memory of his sister Bridget Osborne, who was knocked down by
an ambulance which lost control on ice while walking her dog near her
home in Langtoft near Bourne, Lincolnshire on 17th December 2009.
“She loved animals and used to bring a lot of the rescue dogs home
with her. In fact my parents still look after one of the dogs she
adopted at their home in Peterborough.”
The 10-day remote mountain trek to the legendary Lost City of the
Incas in Machu Picchu is via the Lares Trek which is a challenging
path climbing up to 4,600m.
Martin is hoping to beat his last fund-raising total of just over
£5,000 and is organising a number of events between now and 2nd
November, when he’s due to fly out to Peru for the start of the trek.
He raised over £5,000 for the Wood Green Animal Shelter in
Godmanchester where Bridget used to volunteer.
“I was overwhelmed by people’s generosity when I climbed Mount
Kilimanjaro and would like to thank all those who sponsored me.
“Bridget was a very caring person and spent a lot of her time helping
out at animal rescue centres both in the UK and abroad,” explained
Martin.
“Fingers crossed I will get a similar response this time round and
raise lots more money for the Wood Green Animal Shelter, which has
been rescuing and re-homing animals since 1924.”

Waldeck expansion creates
new opportunities
Waldeck has gone from strength to strength this year with an
expansion in Sheffield and a brand new office opening in Grimsby.
The firm has relocated to bigger premises on Furnival Road in Sheffield
following a recent recruitment drive.
Waldeck has recruited Simon Payne as Business Unit Leader for the
Sheffield office and Senior Technician Jeff Newham and expects the
move to Quayside House will help to create more jobs over the next 12
months. Managing Director Paul Waldeck explained: “Moving into larger
premises and recruiting new members to the team will enable us to
increase our capacity so that we can continue to grow and support the
local economy by creating more jobs for the people of Sheffield.
Sheffield City Councillor Tony Damms (pictured above) officially
opened Waldeck’s new office and said “I was delighted to be invited
to celebrate the official opening of Waldeck’s new office – I’m always
happy when a business locates in the city and I’m particularly pleased
when it’s a business with a track record like Waldeck’s.
14
inspire
“I think the company’s expansion is proof of the fact that
Sheffield’s local economy is growing and that the city is worth
investing in. It’s reassuring that companies like Waldeck want to
come to our city and see Sheffield as part of their future.”
The new office in Grimsby at the Europarc Innovation Centre was
opened by Kate Walker, Economic Development Officer for Greater
Grimsby, who said:
“I’m pleased Waldeck has chosen to launch its new operation in
North-East Lincolnshire at the Europarc Innovation Centre as that’s
exactly what we have developed it for,” she explained.
“I’m sure this will be the first step on the road to success in this area
and a profitable expansion for Waldeck.”
Waldeck is one of the fastest growing consulting engineering firms
in the UK and this latest addition brings the total number of office
locations to nine.
