the state of Sri Lanka has consented to plead
guilty for the charge, the counsel of the accused
announced today before the court.
Counsel Saliya Peiris informed Colombo High
Court today that his client would plead guilty of
the charges against conspiring to assassinate
former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, former
Secretary of the Ministry of Defense Gotabaya
Rajapaksa and former Army Commander Sarath
Fonseka.
He is accused of conspiring to kill the three
persons at Deyata Kirula development exhibition
held in BMICH, Colombo in 2008 in connivance
with the LTTE rebels.
The former officer has allegedly assisted a LTTE
suicide cadre to gain entry into the grounds of
BMICH where the Deyata Kirula exhibition was
held. However the suicide mission failed and the
LTTE suspect was arrested. The army officer
was arrested shortly afterwards.
He was indicted in 2011 for harboring the suicide
cadre in a secure location within the BMICH
grounds.
The Army officer was the former commander of
the Transit Army Camp at Ratmalana. Four
suspects are indicted for the charge. One of
them has been released on bail. The Lieutenant

were arrested.

Sri Lankan woman falls to death in Bahrain
(ceylontoday.lk) A 23-year-old Sri Lankan woman
died early Saturday morning in Bahrain after falling
from the balcony of a ninth-floor residence
belonging to a U.S. Marine.
The woman, Kudaliyanage Dona Nimesha Udari
Gunasekera, was attending a party at Class Plaza
Two in Juffair at the time of the incident, according
to the Naval Criminal Investigative Service Middle
East field office.
According to NCIS, witnesses claim Gunasekera
was "visibly intoxicated and stumbling." A Marine
attempted to grab her but was unable to reach her
in time.
Drinking alcohol in public is banned throughout the
holy month of Ramadan, but U.S. personnel are
authorized to drink in their private residences.
Marines at the residence have cooperated with
Bahraini authorities leading the investigation, said
Capt. Robert Martins, Marine Corps Forces Central
Command Forward public affairs officer. The
Marines gave voluntary statements and were
released.
The investigation is ongoing, but no foul play is
suspected and no arrests have been made.
It's the second death involving U.S. military
personnel in recent months in Bahrain. In May, a
sailor assigned to the USS Farragut died after
falling from a hotel balcony in Juffair.
Navy officials said the circumstances surrounding

India mulling rail bridge between Rameswaram
and Talaimannar
(adaderana.lk) Indian Union minister of state for
road transport, highways and shipping, Pon
Radhakrishnan revealed that the Centre is
considering a proposal to establish a rail bridge
linking Rameswaram (a coastal pilgrim centre in
TN) and Thalaimannar in Sri Lanka, the Deccan
Chronicle news agency reported. If the project
materialises, the two countries would be linked.
A short boat ride used to connect the railway lines
that ended at Talaimannar in Sri Lanka
(Talaimannar) and Dhanushkodi in India, which
was in operation till 1966. During his visit to the
city on Sunday, the Union Minister told reporters
during an informal chat that the Prime Minister
Narendra Modi-led BJP government is
considering a proposal to establish a bridge to
connect the two countries.
Asked about the fate of the Sethusamudram
Ship Canal Project, Mr Radhakrishnan said
the project was not shelved. “The matter is
sub judice… a decision on the project would
be taken based on the outcome of the court
ruling,” he said.

In a hotly contested case over the rights of the
well known musician, the late Clarence
Wijewardena, the Western Province, Commercial
High Court Judge, this week dismissed a case
filed by his widow and daughter seeking a
declaration that they are entitled to the economic
and moral rights in respect of the lyrics, music
composition and melodies of 39 songs
composed by him.
High Court Judge Mahinda Samayawardhena
held that Clarence Wijewardena himself had sold

The Additional Solicitor
General Yassantha Kodagoda

Director of the CID, gave an undertaking to

Alles has said that the CID says he is

Chief of Defence Staff, Lt.
Gen. Jagath Jayasuriya,
has reportedly not been
granted a visa to visit the
United States although his
wife had been granted one in May this year.
The visa applications had been sent to the US
Embassy in May and the duo was scheduled to
leave the country on a private visit on June 30, the
Daily Mirror learns. However, the passport of the
former CDS was still at the embassy and had not
been returned as yet.
Lt. Gen Jagath Jayasuriya took over as
Commander of the Army after the end of the civil
conflict and was thereafter appointed Chief of
Defense Staff. He retired from the position a few
weeks ago.
Meanwhile, when contacted by Daily Mirror on the
matter, a spokesman for the US Embassy in
Colombo said that as a matter of policy, they
cannot comment on individual cases. “That’s all we
have to say at this moment,” he said.
LTTE Black Tigers commemorated
in Jaffna university
(colombogazette.com) The LTTE Black Tigers were
commemorated in the Jaffna university today, the
Jaffna media reported.
Commemorating the LTTE is banned in Sri Lanka
since the LTTE is listed as a terrorist group.
However Jaffna university students had
commemorated the LTTE Black Tigers by lighting
candles.
The first Black Tiger was Vallipuram Vasanthan,
who drove a small truck laden with explosives
into a Sri Lanka Army (SLA) camp in Nelliady,
Jaffna peninsula, on 5 July 1987, killing himself
and between 39–100 Sri Lankan soldiers.
Black Tigers were specially selected and trained
LTTE cadres whose missions included mounting
suicide attacks against military and civilian
targets.
Civilian targets included places of worship, ports,
airports and assassinations of high-profile Indian
and Sri Lankan dignitaries, among them Sri Lankan
President Ranasinghe Premadasa.
From their formation in 1987 until the defeat of the
LTTE in 2009, more than 330 Black Tigers made
suicide attacks on land and sea, mostly in Sri
Lanka. (Colombo Gazette)

Ranil urged to increase Muslim candidates
(colombogazette.com) United National Party (UNP)
leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has been urged to
increase the number of Muslim candidates
contesting the upcoming Parliament election from
the United National Party (UNP).
In a letter to the UNP leader, the Muslim Council of
Sri Lanka noted that the Muslim communities have
been loyal supporters and have been voting the
United National Party overwhelmingly for decades.
“There is much concern amongst the community
that their representation within the UNP has been
reduced. This is mainly because the UNP is
supposed to have made a decision to field only two
Muslim candidates in predominantly Muslim
dominated areas. Sir, you are well aware, the
Muslim representation has been higher in the
districts of
Kandy, Colombo in previous governments. We are
concerned that independent groups may come
forward from the Muslim community and the Muslim
vote could get further fragmented, thereby reducing
the chances of even two members being elected
from these districts,” the Muslim Council added.

Rajapaksa denies Rs 9.4 million
‘family breakfast’
(adaderana.lk) Former President Mahinda
Rajapaksa has rejected as “exaggerated
allegations” made by the United National Party
(UNP) regarding the spending of a sum
exceeding Rs 9.4 million for a “Rajapaksa family
breakfast.”
Former UNP parliamentarian Nalin Bandara had
said, at a press conference on Monday (6), that
the Rajapaksa family had ordered breakfast for
over Rs 9.4 million from The Hilton Hotel and not
paid the bill.
He had produced a document from the Hilton
Hotel to prove the allegation and inquired as to
why public funds had been spent on a family
breakfast.
However, Rajapaksa’s Media Coordinating
Secretary Rohan Welivita says that the document
produced by the ex-MP was a pro-forma invoice
dated 11 November 2013 to provide breakfast for
1400 guests at the rate of Rs 5,200 per head
during the Commonwealth Heads of Government
Meeting (CHOGM) opening ceremony at the

TNA not to allow ex-LTTE members to contest polls
(adaderana.lk) Sri Lanka’s main Tamil party has
barred former LTTE members from contesting
parliamentary elections next month.
The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) said
rehabilitated former LTTE members will be
considered for selection at future elections.
Several ex-LTTE members had applied to be
candidates from the former battle zone districts in
the north and eastern provinces for the August 17
polls. The party has even rejected a bid to contest
by Ananthi Saseetharan, one of TNA’s elected
members in the northern provincial council.
Saseetharan was in the forefront of an
international campaign highlighting the abuse of
human rights by government troops in the threedecade civil war against the LTTE.
Her husband, Elilan was a senior LTTE member
from the eastern province in Trincomalee.
Saseetharan alleged he went missing the day he
surrendered to the military.
Senior TNA leader M A Sumanthiran said the party
was hopeful of winning a maximum of 20 seats in
the 225-member parliament. The party had won 13
in the last election in 2010.
The TNA is a coalition of five Tamil groups and
they were widely criticised for being proxies of the
LTTE at the height of the LTTE’s military
campaign. They won a massive 80 per cent of the
vote in the first ever election to the northern
provincial council held in 2013.
The TNA backed current President Maithripala
Sirisena when he defeated Mahinda Rajapaksa as
the opposition unity candidate in the presidential
election in January. (PTI)

Constitutional Council holds first meeting
(ft.lk) The Constitutional Council,
established by the historic 19th
Amendment to the Constitution
enacted in April, held its first sitting in
Parliament yesterday with former
Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa
assuming the chair.
The meeting was held at 10.00 a.m.
at the Speaker’s official gallery.
Speaker Rajapaksa, Prime Minister
Ranil Wickremesinghe and Opposition Leader Nimal Siripala De Silva
attended as the Council’s ex-officio
members, while the MPs Wijeyadasa
Rajapakshe, John Seneviratne and R.
Sampanthan participated as the nominees of the
UNP, SLFP and minor parties respectively.
The Prime Minister emphasised the importance of
studying the conduct of the previous Constitutional
Council established under the 17th Amendment in
order to make the new council more efficient.
Wickremesinghe also stated that in order to
ensure the speedy establishment of the
independent commissions, the Constitutional
Council should study the process to call for
applications for members of the commissions and
what those applications should contain.
The council decided to appoint Secretary General
of Parliament, Dhammika Dassanayake, as the
temporary general secretary to the council, the
Speaker’s office said in a media release.
The council also decided to seek the advice of the
attorney general concerning the appointment of
three civil society representatives to the
Constitutional Council.
Since the constitutional requirement is for the
Constitutional Council to meet twice every month,
the next meeting will be held on 9 July at 10.00
a.m. in the Speaker’s official gallery, the media
release said.
Former LTTE militants to contest polls
as ‘Crusaders For Democracy’
(sundaytimes.lk) Former militants of the Liberation
Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and their supporters
have decided to form a political party named
“Crusaders for Democracy” and seek tickets from
the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) to contest the
August 17 Sri Lankan parliamentary elections.
Militants and their supporters from the Northern
and Eastern districts of Jaffna,
Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Mannar,
Vavuniya and Batticaloa gathered
outside the famous Nallur
Kandswamy temple in Jaffna on
Friday and took an oath to fight for
the rights of the Tamil-speaking
people by democratic means such
as participation in elections through
a political party to be known as
“Crusaders for Democracy.”
CFD’s Coordinator Nadesapillai
Vithyatharan said that a request will
be made to the TNA to give nomination to at least
two former militants in each of the districts of the
Northern and Eastern provinces where the TNA
holds sway.
Among the aims of the CFD are: the establishment
of a new political culture and a new kind of Tamil
leadership which will be marked by honesty and
courage; speedy implementation of rehabilitation
and livelihood programs; securing the release of
Tamil political prisoners; and building bridges with
fair and accommodative political elements and
leaders in South Sri Lanka with a view to securing
an amicable political settlement of the Tamil
question.
However, despite its commitment to
pursue the democratic path, the
CFD is not regretful about its past
involvement with the LTTE. The
press release on its formation noted
that Friday’s gathering was held at
the place near the Nallur temple
where “Thyagi” Thileepan of the
LTTE fasted unto death to secure
the rights of the Tamils when the
Indian Peace Keeping Force held
sway in Jaffna in 1987.
Athmalingam Ravindra alias Rupan, who had held
high political and administrative positions in the
LTTE both in Trincomalee district and in the Wanni
from the early 1990s to May 2009, has already put
in an application for a TNA ticket in Trincomalee
district. (The New Indian Express)

Peramuna (MEP) today
announced that it would
contest the forthcoming
general elections along
with the United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA)

In a statement its General Secretary Thissa Yapa
Jayawardana said the decision had been taken
during the Central Committee meeting held
yesterday with the participation of its Leader
Dinesh Gunawardena.
It further said that they would represent their
candidate covering the most of districts at the
election.
MEP Central Committee also expressed its
appreciation for the President Maithripala Sirisena
for giving nomination to former President Mahinda
Rajapaksa to contest at the election on the UPFA
ticket.
Azath Salley to contest Parliament polls
(colombogazette.com) Muslim Tamil National
Alliance (MTNA) leader Azath Salley says he will
be contesting the Parliament elections from the
Kandy District. Speaking to reporters in Kandy
today after meeting the Chief Prelates of the
Asgiriya and Malwattu chapters, Salley said that
he will contest the election either with the UNP or
as an independent candidate.
Salley said that the people of Kandy have
requested him to contest the election from Kandy
and represent the people of Kandy in Parliament.
He also said that at talks held with UNP Leader
Ranil Wickremesinghe he was told that the UNP
had proposed that only two Muslims contest in
Kandy on behalf of the UNP.
Salley said that the UNP had in the past fielded
more Muslim candidates
from Kandy but now that
number is being reduced.
He also accused the UNP
of attempting to reduce
the overall number of
Muslim candidates
contesting future
elections from the party.
“This is taking a racial twist. We must stop this,”
Salley asserted.
Salley said that if the UNP fails to give him
nominations to contest the August 17 election, he
will contest as an independent candidate in order
to keep his promise to the people of Kandy.

news that he is about to

General Election is a hoax.
“This has nothing to do with
my citizenship issue,” he said, adding that
however he has already taken measures to cancel
his dual citizenship. “I’ve already handed over the
relevant documents to the US embassy, in this
regard” he said.
He told Ada Derana that he has no intention to
contest at the election and enter the parliament.
“There is no need to get elected as a
parliamentarian to serve the country,” he added.
Earlier, the former Defence Secretary also
dismissed media reports that he would enter
parliament through the National List and be a
minister in the Rajapaksa government.
It was also reported that former Speaker Chamal
Rajapaksa likely will not contest at the election as
well. A source close to the UPFA says that former
Minister Basil Rajapaksa has also not yet decided
whether to contest or not at the polls.

those who had exercised their franchise for Maithripala
Sirisena expected of the party. Instead of taking swift and far
reaching decisions required to re-direct the country towards a
new path, the UNP bungled. "The alleged Central Bank bond
scam is a case in point"; Warnasinghe said, blaming the UNP
for sabotaging the 20 Amendment to the Constitution. The 20
Amendment was meant to bring in far reaching electoral
reforms soon after the passage of the 19 Amendment to the
Constitution, he said. Unfortunately, the two major political
parties pursued strategies inimical to the overall well being of
the country at the expense of crucial constitutional and
electoral reforms, the JHU spokesperson said.
Responding to a query, Warnasinghe alleged that the 10member Constitutional Council as envisaged in the 19
Amendment couldn’t be established due to intransigence of
the UNP and the SLFP.
Asked whether JHU General Secretary and Power and
Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka would quit his
ministerial portfolio in Prime Minister Wickremesinghe’s
caretaker government, Warnasinghe said that hadn’t been
discussed ye but our position would be made public soon.
The JHU alleged that some of those who had thrown their
weight behind Maithripala Sirisena at the January 8 election
weren’t capable of taking tangible measures. "Their actions
are restricted to rhetoric," Warnasinghe said. Asked whether
he was referring to the JVP, Warnasinghe said: "You can
reach a conclusion on the basis of post-January 8 poll conduct
of political parties."
The JHU said that the government had bungled anticorruption investigations much to the anger and
disappointment of those who had risked their lives to bring
down the powerful Rajapaksa government.

Sri Lankan political parties urged to give women
more slots in nominations for election
(ft.lk) At the UNP’s Sirik-otha Headquarters
yesterday, the Prime Minister allowed
reporters to observe a briefing he had
requested from party members who also sat
on COPE – MPs Sujeewa Senasinghe, Eran
Wickramaratne and Rosy Senanayake.
The MPs told the Premier at the briefing that
the ‘report’ being circulated by Gunesekera
was a document summarising nearly 400
pages of evidence gathered during the COPE
probe of the Central Bank bond scandal.
Three drafts of the same document had been
circulated among COPE members on
Thursday 25 June, one day before Parliament
was dissolved, Senasinghe told the Prime
Minister.
UNP members in the Committee had
challenged some sections of the document,
but Gunesekera had been unyielding insisting
that the report be tabled in Parliament, even
though there was no agreement, Senasinghe
claimed.
He added that COPE sub committees could
not report to Parliament but only to the main
committee, which was empowered to put facts
before the Members of the House.
Senasinghe said he was planning to take
legal action against the former COPE
Chairman about his violation of proceedings
and partisan conduct.
Former MP Wickramaratne told the Prime
Minister that several members of COPE had
been absent at Friday’s meetings and never
even saw the three drafts the Chairman had
put forward.
“In an investigation like this, there cannot be
an interim report, because this is one issue
we are going into and you can only issue an
interim report based on completed facts,” the
former banker told the Premier.

(colombopage.com) July 07, Colombo: Sri Lanka's
Ministry of Women's affairs has urged the political
parties to give women more opportunities when
they prepare nomination lists for the upcoming
general elections.
The Ministry has urged all the political parties to
ensure that at least 30 percent of candidates they
nominate for the forthcoming general election are
women.
Secretary of the Women's Affairs Ministry in a
press release has requested the political parties to
even allocate one third of seats for women in the
National List.
The release further stated that the percentage of
women in the last parliament was 5.8 percent and
that all political parties or groups should as per the
Cabinet decision of the new government ensure
that more than 30 percent of the total candidates
included in nomination papers should consist of
women candidates.
The release also pointed out that 5.8 percentages
is a lowest rate among South Asian Countries and
Sri Lanka ranks 140 out of 153 countries in female
representation in Parliament.
Accordingly, not only in the parliament but also in
provincial and local councils, 30 percent
participation must be given for women, the
Ministry said.
Slow progress in political empowerment has also
damaged the country s attempts to bridge the
gender gap. Sri Lanka's gender gap increased
over the last year and gender equality ranking
declined from a 55 in 2013 to a 79 in 2014 out of
142 countries according to World Economic Forum
Global Gender Gap Report 2014.

presidential election,” he added.
He claimed that some quarters are attempting to
win the upcoming parliamentary election through

TNA rejects nominations for Anandi
(colombogazette.com) The Tamil National Alliance
(TNA) has rejected nominations for TNA Provincial
Council member Anandi Saseetharan to contest
the August 17 Parliament elections.
Saseetharan had requested nominations to
contest and enter Parliament but the TNA had
today rejected that request.
The TNA had noted that Saseetharan has already
been given several privileges by the party and so
a policy decision was taken not to give her
nominations.
Meanwhile, TNA Parliamentarian M.A.
Sumanthiran said that
the TNA hopes to
secure at least 20 seats
in Parliament through
the August election.
At a meeting held in
Vavuniya today, the TNA
decided to handover
nomination papers for its candidates contesting
the election from the North and East on Friday.

idea of incorporating such a system is to
ensure that the residents do not have to be
involved in the management of the garden.
“We are looking at Clearpoint Residences
from a sustainable point of view,” explained
Arosha Perera, Project Architect.
“Before starting the project we looked at
different options in terms of what we can do
to make an apartment more sustainable. We
have included several aspects that are simple
such as the elongated balconies with plants.
It may look like an aesthetic decision to make
the building look cooler, but in fact it is a
pragmatic one to limit the amount of sunlight
streaming in. The idea is that the plants can

"IRA SEWAYA" - A TRIBUTE TO REBECCA
The latest film by London based Engineer cum
award winning actor WIMAL ALAHAKOON
is now released in Sri Lanka and being captured
a large audience.
This is the last film of our beloved actress
REBECCA NIRMALI before her untimely death
due to a sudden illness. She is widely known as
“WEDA HAMINE”, due to her memorable
performance in the teledrama ' Weda Hamine'. In
this film too, she plays
another memorable

“ This film is the ultimate

film is somewhat like attending a pilgrimage with

The story carries a noble message that THOSE
WHO FOLLOW THE PATH OF DHAMMA (

Another attraction for the Sri
Lankan audience is that a part of
the film was shot in London.
The popular veteran actress
MORIN CHARUNI is also
playing a leading role in this film,
which was directed by the
prominent journalist RODNEY
WIDANAPATHIRANA.
Wimal informs that “Ira Sewaya”
will be released in London
towards the end of the year.

Your Next Holiday at Kottukal Beach House
(dailynews.lk) The world renowned scientist Arthur
C. Clarke noted that a 'lifetime' would not be
enough to explore the 'people, history, nature and
art' of Sri Lanka.
However one has to start somewhere and what
could be a better starting point than Jetwing's
Kottukal Beach House which is located on the
unspoiled beaches of Sri Lanka's East coast. A
beautiful boutique villa, Kottukal Beach House by
Jetwing is situated in Arugam Bay, promises a
stylish stay at one of the most picturesque places
in the island - an experience made sweeter by the
spectacular 20 percent discount available to all, on
any basis booked.
This is a villa which encapsulates discrete service
and personal luxury with its intimate four
bedrooms, swaying palm trees and wide expanse
of sand and surf. There are two bedrooms in the
main house as well as two separate chalets. The
bedrooms are well furnished in earthy tones and
crisp white linen which is easy on the eye. Trellis
work decorates the fanlights and four poster beds,
blue and bamboo coloured slats all contribute to
ensuring that guests feel both cosy and luxurious
at the same time. Air conditioning beats the heat
while a high ceiling adds to a feeling of spacious
comfort. Wide mirrors on cut cement in the
bathrooms and private balconies or terraces for
each room encapsulate luxury and rustic living in
one dynamic package.
Dine al-fresco on the beach with the waves rolling
up onto the sand as you enjoy a delicious seafood
fiesta. The breeze, the surf and the food combine
to create a moment you will want to repeat during
you stay at the villa. The flexible meal times and
your own personal chef make it all the more
desirable as you enjoy a BBQ on the beach or an
intimate dinner for two.
While Kottukal Beach House by Jetwing has an
amazing view and a private pool which is a hop
step and a jump away from an East Coast beach
to die for, the facilities do not stop there. It also
provides daily housekeeping and laundry services
that are made all the more useful if you want the
staff to organize a

The day has dawned, long awaited annual
opportunity to meet with fellow countrymen to
enjoy our favourite sport CRICKET , in no small
measure too - a feast of talent is in store to be
unleashed by 31 teams of 7 players per side doing
their best to collect maximum runs in limited overs.
Presiding over the largest organising committee to
date, it is my privilege and pleasure to welcome
you all today, to the 27th Annual Festival of Cricket.
A committee of sixty eight members under twelve
different chairs have put in a tremendous amount
of work over the last nine months Introducing new
meeting venues and concept of teamwork with 12
sub-committees, to make this a most enjoyable
and memorable day of sport and friendship.
This year for the first time England and Wales

securing the new venue - The Hainault Recreation
Ground. Our grateful thanks, therefore, go to the
ECB and the Essex Cricket, who very kindly
introduced us to the Hainault Recreation grounds
at Fairlop, Ilford in Essex, which has 10 full size
cricket pitches. Fairlop Station is served by the
popular Central Line Tube that travels through
Central London to the western suburbs; it has
easily accessible connections to all the other
underground and over ground services. The
grounds are also accessible from the North (A406)

Message from His Excellency the President of Sri Lanka
I am pleased to send this message of felicitation
on the occasion of the 27th anniversary of the
Festival of Cricket 2015 organised by 31 Sri
Lankan schools' OBAs' in the United Kingdom.
Cricket is a sport immensely enjoyed by our
people without any communal or religious bias
and indeed Cricket is a unifier of Sri Lankans
across geographical boundaries. Hence, I am
Maithripala Sirisena
glad to note that cricket-loving Sri Lankans,
H.E. President
irrespective of their race, religion or political
of Sri Lanka
affiliations join the Festival of Cricket, UK,
displaying solidarity and the spirit of
togetherness.
This occasion provides an opportunity for the Sri
Lankan community and others to enjoy the game
of cricket that is immensely popular in both
countries. This is also an occasion to showcase
Sri Lankan cuisine, music and traditional
dancing, giving an interesting cultural fervour to
the entertainment.
Furthermore, I appreciate the decision taken by
the organisers to donate proceeds from the
Festival to schools in Sri Lanka and
selected charitable activities.
I congratulate the organizers of the
Festival of Cricket for their contribution
to promote Sri Lanka in the United
Kingdom through sports and culture
and wish the festivities every success.
Maithripala Sirisena
H.E. President of Sri Lanka
Message from the Acting High Commissioner of Sri Lanka in the UK
Dr. Chanaka
Talpahewa
I am pleased to forward this message for the
souvenir commemorating the 27th Anniversary of
the Festival of Cricket.
Cricket has become almost a lifestyle of the Sri
Lankan people, one and a half centuries after the
British introduced the sport to us. Today, it has
undoubtedly become the most influential game in
the country and the de-facto national sport. Further
it has become a unifying force in the country,
transcending all boundaries.
I understand that part of the excess proceedings of
this event will be utilised to develop 31 schools of
the teams who are taking part today. This will
auger well for the future of the sport in Sri Lanka. I
also understand that a part of the excess
proceedings will be utilized for charity donations to
cancer institutions, which is very commendable.
I take this opportunity to congratulate the
organizing committee for
their commitment and
dedication to organise
this event in such a
grand scale, making it
the largest Sri Lankan
event in the UK.

Message from Charity Chairman FoC 2015
Shaukat Mamujee
Chairman Charity
The Charity Raffle is an integral part of the Festival
of Cricket, and participation in it is as important as
the Cricket and Hospitality events taking place on
the day. It delivers a “humane thought” of helping
people less fortunate than ourselves amongst all
the frivolities that are going on. It is therefore with
much gratitude that I thank the support of all the 31
OBAs of the FOC in trying to sell as many tickets
as possible. As reiterated in the past, the funds we
raise do not depend on the profits we make from
the Festival, but only from the sale of our raffle
tickets. This year all the funds raised from the raffle
in total will go towards institutions dealing in
Cancer Research in UK and Sri Lanka extending a
special contribution to the Anthony Nolan Fund.
Also, I, categorically state that no expenses have
been incurred in the running of the raffle and in this
aspect I must thank Mass Global Shipping for
sponsoring the cost of printing tickets and
Srilankan Airlines for their magnanimous support in
offering the main prizes of Return Air tickets to Sri
Lanka. I also thank those who have offered the
Prizes which are as important in making
this Raffle a success. Above all my
sincere thanks to all of you who have
purchased tickets and those who will
purchase more on the day. Finally thanks
to my Assistants at the FOC whose help
was imperative. GOOD LUCK
Dr. Shaukat. A. Mamujee

The change of venue from last year,
is due to the chosen venue is a large
play ground boasting 10 Cricket
Pitches and offers much greater
potential more spaces for stalls for
traders and entertainment. This year's
tournament will be the biggest
challenge and opportunity for
the FoC in its 26-yr history of
the Cricket tournament and
the accompanying variety of
entertaining activities too.
The FoC is delighted and
grateful for the support
extended by the English &
Wales Cricket Board (ECB) in
securing this large play
ground which hosts the annual ECB
league matches.
FoC is mindful that the inconvenience
that might be experienced by loyal
Participants/Spectators who have
attended regularly and who might be
inconvenienced to travel to the new
venue this year in East London.
However, it became imperative to
transfer to a bigger play ground due
to the increasing number of
participating OBU Cricket Teams in
recent years. The good news is that
the Ground is a stone's throw from
London Underground FAIRLOP
(Central Line) and is relatively easily
accessed from the A406 North
Circular Road.
In preparation for this year's
Festival of Cricket on Sunday
12th July, the FoC Committee
and sub-committees have had
two planning meetings - on the
22nd Feb and, on the 22nd
March 2015.
A key decision made at the
meetings was to purchase, as
opposed to hiring , physical
assets that are re-usable for
future tournaments such assets
include marquees, furniture etc.
Several other important decisions too
were made:
Modifications to OBU Cricket
Teams - Rules & Regulations,
Security / Stewarding
Health & Safety
Ground Services
Hospitality
Trade, Fund-Raising, Charity &
FoC Souvenir Advertisements.

It is to be appreciated that the FoC is
run by an Executive Committee as a
team who take pride in their voluntary
work, striving to promote and foster
unity among the Sri Lankan
community in the UK. In the main, the

Renowned Meditation Teacher visits London Buddhist Vihara.
Renowned Meditation Teacher from USA Ven.
Henepola Gunaratana Thera delivered a Dhamma
Talk on meditation at the London Buddhsit Vihara.
This Dhamma talk was a part of the day retreat
and with this talk once again the LBV has started
a series of Dhamma talks on every first Saturday
of the month.
Ven. Ven. Henepola Gunaratana Thera was born
December 7, 1927 in the small Sri Lankan village
of Henepola. He was ordained as a monk at the
age of 12, and received his education at
Vidyasekhara Pirivena, a monk's school at
Gampaha. He received upasampada when he
was 20, in Kandy. He received his higher
education in Sri Lanka at Vidyalankara College in
Kelaniya and the Buddhist Missionary College (an
affiliate of the Maha Bodhi Society) in
Colombo. After his education, he was sent to India
for missionary work as a representative of the
Maha Bodhi Society. He primarily served the
Untouchables in Sanchi, Delhi, and Bombay.
He also served as a religious advisor to the
Malaysian Sasana Abhivurdhiwardhana Society,
Buddhist Missionary Society, and Buddhist Youth
Federation. Following this he served as an
educator for Kishon Dial School and Temple Road
Girl's School. He was also the principal of the
Buddhist Institute of Kuala Lumpur.Bhante
Gunaratana came to the United States at the

conducted meditation retreats and taught courses
in Buddhist Studies.

the University of Maryland, College Park. He also
lectures at universities throughout the United
States, Europe, and Australia. He is the author of
the book Mindfulness in Plain English.
Ven. Gunaratana is currently the abbot of the
Bhavana Society, a monastery and meditation

Virginia.
Ven. Galagama Attadassi Mahanayake Thera Conferred Title of Chief Prelate of Asgiriya Chapter
New epoch for Asgiriya Chapter
Col. Sudath Madugalle
(dailynews.lk) The Most Venerable Galagama
Dhammasiddhi Sri Dhammananda Attadassi Thera
will be conferred the Chief Prelateship of the
Asgiriya Chapter of the Shyamopali Maha
Viharawanshika Maha Nikaye, today. On the 13th
of December1999, he was appointed as the
Anunayake Thera of the Asgiriya Chapter, a
position he held till his ascent to the Chief
Prelateship of the same Chapter recently. A direct
successor from the line of disciples of the first
Chief Prelate of the Asgiriya Chapter – the Most
Ven. Urulewatte Sri Priyadarshi Dhammasiddhi
Mahanayake Thera, the Most Ven. Attadassi Thera
is also the 10th ascendant to the Chief
Incumbency of the historic group of Viharas
consisting of the Urulewatte Purana Vihara,
Humbuluwa Raja Maha Vihara, Asgiriya Vihara
and the Urulewatte Temple.
Born on 11th January 1922 in Asgiri Pallesiya
Paththuwa in the Matale District, the Most
Venerable Thera was called by the layman’s name
of Kulatunga Mudiyanselage Kiribandara in his
childhood. Son of parents, Tennakoon
Mudiyanselage Pinchi Amma Kumarihami and
Kulatunge Mudiyanselage Dingiri Banda Nilame,
he was ordained as a novice monk in the year
1936 under the tutelage of Ven. Udurawana Sri
Dhammananda Thera. He received his higher
ordination (Upasampada) in 1942 under the
guidance of Ven. Udurawana Sri Dhammananda
Thera and Most Venerable Mullegama Sri
Gunaratane Mahanayake Thera. Ven. Urulewatte
Gunaratane Thera and Ven. Gammulle
Chandrajothi Thera acted as the Karmacharyas in
his Upasampada ordination.
The Most Venerable Galagama Attadassi Thera
excelled at his studies at the Matale Sri
Dharmaraja Pirivena where he was enrolled in
1937. After 10 years of primary Piriven
education at this Pirivena, he passed the
subjects of Sinhala, Pali, Sanskrit and Tamil with
Distinction Passes in 1947. He continued to
perform excellently in his higher studies.
Completing the Prachina, Prarambha,
Madhyama and Final years, the Most Venerable
Thera gained the Panditha Degree and was
later awarded the Saddharmacharya Degree by
the Vidyodaya Pirivena. In 1950, he continued
his winning streak in education; he succeeded in
gaining the Abhidamacharya and
Thripitakacharya and also, the coveted
Magdhima Bhanaka Degree in the same year.
In the year 1950, the Most Venerable Thera
assumed the position of Karmacharya of the
Asgiriya Maha Vihara, one among the many
positions he would ascend to in later years. In
1982, he became a Member of the Karaka Sangha
Sabha and, he was selected to the Senior
Membership of the same council, in 1994. The
Most Venerable Thera was awarded the venerated
title of Mahopadya in 1994 and was conferred
the honorary title of ‘Sthavira Vanshalankara
Shasana Sobhana’ by the Vidyalankara
Pirivena in the year 2002.
His effective and efficient discharge of duties
entrusted to him won him many an admirer and
honour. He was entrusted with the prestigious task
of the Thewawa of the Sacred Tooth Relic– a
responsibility and honour exclusive to the Asgiriya
and Malwatte Chapters of the Syamopali Maha
Viharawanshike Maha Nikaya – in 1981. In the
years 1999 and 2000, the Most Venerable
Galagama Attadassi Thera was placed in charge of
the aforementioned Thewawa.
His yeoman service and utmost contribution to the
Buddha Sasana and the society at large warrants
worthy mention. Foremost among them is the
service rendered during the Chief Incumbency of
the historically important Mahiyangana Maha
Vihara, which he assumed on the 25th of March
2000. He spearheaded construction projects that
saw a face-lift of several structures at the aforesaid
Vihara and fresh construction of several more. He
advised and supervised the renovation of library,
administration and sanitation facilities for devotees.
He also instituted a Montessori by the name of Siri
Sangabo and a Nenasala for the benefit of the
children and youth in the surrounding areas.
In around 74 years of monkhood, he has
preached and led religious worship around the
island. His conduct has been becoming of a great
Buddhist monk and has been respectful of all
principles and duties required of a prelate of the
highest order. The Most Venerable Thera has also
led Buddhist missionary activity overseas; notable
among them are his visits to Bharat (India) in
1991, Singapore in 2000, Laos in 2003 and,
Thailand in 2003 and 2005. Truly mindful of what
is required of a Nayake Thera, he has also
groomed several disciples including the Senior
Member of the Karaka Sangha Sabha – Ven.
Urulewatte Dhammarakkhitha Thera and the Chief
Trustee Prelate of the Humbuluwa Rajamaha
Vihara – Ven. Urulewatte Dhammkitthi Thera.
The ascension of the Most Venerable Galagama
Dhammasiddhi Sri Dhammananda Attadassi Thera
as the Chief Prelate of the Asgiriya Chapter is most
worthy and of great merit. May the Most Venerable
Thera receive the Blessings of the Noble Triple
Gem and the commendation and respect of the
laymen and Sangha alike, in the years to come!
(The writer is Vice President – All Ceylon Buddhist
Congress and Assistant Secretary-General – World
Fellowship of Buddhists.)
Asgiriya Raja Maha Vihara
(dailynews.lk) North from the lake is situated the
Asgiri Maha Viharaya, the other monastic centre
of the Siyam Nikaya. This temple is believed to
be considerably older ‘than the Malwatu Viharaya
and the “Asgiriya Talpata” voices this claim.
Asgiri Maha Viharaya was founded by
Commander Siriwardhana at the inquest of
Parakramabahu IV of Kurunegala (1305-1335
A.D.). The original buildings were set up in the
Trinity College premises. The bhikkhus to take up
residence here was sent from Valasgala
hermitage in Yapahuva. The name Valasgala is
translated into Pali as “Acchagiri” and the present
Sinhalese name Asgiri is derived from it.
According to another legend Asgiri was named
after the mother queen of Vikramabahu who was
cremated in the present cremation ground or
Adahana Maluva at Asgiriya.
It is said that she built a temple called
“Talagahamulla Viharaya” which later became the
“Asgiri Viharaya”. At present the Asgiri Temple
Complex is called “Heyagiri Wijesundararama”.
Heyagiri is a erroneously translation in to
Sinhalese the pali word Acchagiri. During the last
king of Kandy, His Commander-in-Chief

Urulewatte Wijesundara Rajakaruna Seneviratne
built a new temple near the old one and the
whole temple complex became to known as
“Heyagiri Wijesundararama”.
The King also made land grants to the temple
and an inscription by him to this effect is still seen
nearby. But the popular name Asgiriya continued
to be used. During the reign of Rajadhi Rajasinha
(1779-1797 A.D.) the streets of Kandy were
straightened and as a result the old
buildings of the Viharaya had to be
demolished and a new temple was
built at “Udamadapota”. This is now
known as” Pahala Pansala “or lower
temple. The demolition for the
second time took place during the
reign of Vimaladharmasuriya II
(1687 – 1707) when he was building
a wall round the city.
It is seen from the history of the
Asgiri Viharaya that almost all the
rulers of the Kandyan Kingdom have
contributed much towards its
development. On the other hand, it
was mainly the monks of this
Chapter who have safeguarded the Tooth Relic
on behalf of the ruling monarch during
troublesome times.
Again, it was Wariyapola Sumangala Anunayake
Thero of the Vihara who re-hoisted the Sinhalese
flag in protest when the British hoisted their flag
at the time of the signing of the Kandyan
Convention in 1815.

distinctive feature is the ability to opt for
a private pool if you are selecting a
presidential suite or a penthouse

are located at. The pool will protrude out
of the apartment, creating a stunning
view.
“The partnership between our firm and

possess both in architecture and
construction is the main reason we have
confidently undertaken the responsibility
of trying to accommodate a certain
degree of customisation. And we have
also been socially responsible and have
gone the extra mile to specially design
for differently-able people beyond
mandatory requirements, including
specialised sanitary fittings and access.”

“Adahana Maluwa Gedige Viharaya”.
Historically, Adahana Maluva Gedige is the
second oldest monument in the city and
architecturally it belongs to the same school
that influenced the monuments at Natha
Devale and Gadaladeniya Vihara in Uda
Nuwara. It is believed that the plan of the Natha
Devala Gedige has been made use of here.
Adahanamaluve Gedige Viharaya plays a
significant role in the Kandy Esala Peraharain that
in final night the Relic Casket of the Dalada
Maligava is deposited there until the
commencement of the last day Perahara which
begins from this site. This is done in order to fulfil
a wish of King Kirti Sri Rajasinhe (1747 – 1781),
who, having re-started the Dalada Perahara,
ordered that the Casket be deposited at
Adahana Maluva as a mark of respect to his
queen mother cremated there.
Adahana Maluva was the place where the
dead bodies of the kings of Kandy were
burned and their remains were buried.
Valentyn says that the body of
Vimaladharmasuriya I (1592 – 1604), who
died in 1604 was “cremated according to the
custom of his country in a princely arbour”.
Maha Astana, the son of Vimaladharmasuriya
I, and Dona Catherina who died in 1612 was
also cremated there with “very great state and
royalty, while great mourning lamentation were
taking place at the sepulcher”. He also speaks
of Dona Catherina who died in July 20, 1613.
“She was cremated on the 21st with great
splendour on the same spot where the funeral
of her son had been celebrated”.
In 1878-80 the railway line to Matale was
constructed under the Adahana Maluva in a
tunnel and the last of the tombs which was
almost the only remains of the Royal burial
ground was destroyed.
Among the historical monuments in the city of
Kandy are three other important temples
belonging to the late Kandyan period. They are
Gangaramaya, Huduhumpola and Nittawela.
These stood outside the boundaries of the old
city but today they are within the municipal limits
because of their close proximity to the ancient
city.

Switching over to the CPL now. Is your form a bit
similar to the environment in Sri Lanka. Cricket is
of concern? You have made just 13 runs from
an occasion in both the places and players love it

competitive. Talent is brilliant and everyone is
enjoying it. I am looking forward to the next
couple of weeks.
What is your take on the CPL? What sort of an
impact do tournaments like these have on
youngsters as well as seniors? It’s great. It’s
something for us to challenge ourselves in a
different way. I think Indian cricket has come a
long way in international cricket because of the
IPL where young players share dressing rooms
with seniors from all over the world. All
countries are benefiting from that exchange.
West Indies is trying to do the same thing and
they are doing a great job with that. It’s very
competitive and there’s a lot of quality. Young
talent in West Indies is going to learn a lot from
this. It’s good for us (seniors) too. It’s nice to
get away from international cricket. It’s
competitive but it’s very entertaining as well so
we are very relaxed and it’s brilliant. It’s fun to
be here and I am really enjoying my cricket
here.
Do you see a similarity in the way the game is
approached in the West Indies and in Sri
Lanka, not just by the players but also the
fans?
No. Of course, there are a lot of similarities in

... but when it mattered most, the final four
sessions of the Test, they let it slip, prompting
many to wonder if the result would have been
different had the two been around.
In this lengthy chat with Wisden India,
Jayawardene speaks about his dear friend, the
future of Sri Lankan cricket, the Caribbean Premier
League and more. Excerpts:
Now that Kumar Sangakkara has also announced
his retirement, how do you think Sri Lankan cricket
will cope with your twin absences?
We have had quite a few discussions (regarding
Sangakkara’s retirement). We have spoken about
this for the past one year, from around the time I
retired, but Sri Lankan Cricket convinced him to
play a bit longer so he changed his stand. He is
fantastic. If you ask Kumar, he would say I am the
best but if you look at his numbers, it’s quite clear
who was. Kumar’s numbers are phenomenal and
he has stamped his legacy. He is someone every
youngster should learn from. He has handled
himself very well on and off the field. He is
someone who has given a lot to Sri Lankan cricket
and I am very proud to have played with him. It’s
going to be a tremendous loss for Sri Lankan
cricket, but like all teams, Sri Lanka will also go
through a transition period. I hope the young side
can learn from some of the things that we have
taught them and take Sri Lankan cricket in the right
direction. That’s our only hope.
Do you think once Sangakkara leaves, the legacy
that you and he built over the years will begin to
wane? You’ll have to wait and see. We tried to
change the culture in the team over the last ten
years and we have managed well. It also depends
on the next generation and if they want to stay the
path or follow a new direction. But I think once he
leaves, our signature in the side will cease to exist
and I don’t think many will take our approach
forward. Younger guys have a very different view
and different ways of going about things and they
should be allowed to pursue their own path. It will
be interesting to see how things pan out. We had a
great run for over 15 years and no one can stay
forever but we are proud that we have given
everything we had for the country.
Experience is something the Sri Lankan side lacks
right now, and it was evident in their loss to
Pakistan. Will that become more and more of a
problem during this transition?
I don’t know. I didn’t watch too much of the match
but I know that Pakistan have much more
experience. Obviously, Younis Khan’s knock in the
fourth innings showed that. I know the boys will
learn from this experience and you will see a much
better performance the next time. I’m sure they will
have a chat about it and see what positives they
can take away from it. I thought everyone fought
very well, especially the bowlers did a great job for
Sri Lanka. We just need to fine tune a bit… so I
just think Sri Lankan cricket needs to be supported
during this period.

Mahinda’s pace barrage
too much for Thomians
Under-17 Division I Cricket
by Reemus Fernando
(island.lk) Mahinda College, Galle cruised to 37
runs victory over S. Thomas’ College as left-arm
paceman Visitha Sammana spearheaded their
bowling attack with a three wicket haul in the
Singer Cup Inter School Under-17 Division I cricket
tournament match played at Mount Lavinia on
Tuesday.
Chasing 188 runs to win the Thomians lost wickets
at reguler intervals. They were four wickets down for
34 runs at one stage before skipper Romesh
Nallaperuma (57) and Rusith Karunaratne put on a
fifth wicket stand of 76 runs.
But that was not enough for the home team to pose
any threat as others failed to resist the pace
barrage of Mahinda.
While left-arm paceman Sammana picked up three
wickets, right armers Prashan Kavinda and Kavindu
Maheesha and off-spinner Ashen Kandambi picked
up two wickets each.
Earlier, Ravindu Hansika top scored with 78 runs for
Mahinda. He scored nine fours and a six in his 116ball knock.
Scores:
Mahinda 187 all out in 49 overs (Ravindu Hansika

India yet to confirm Lanka schedule
(colombogazette.com) The Indian cricket team will
play the first of the three-Test series against Sri
Lanka in Galle from August 12 to 16 according to a
media release issued by the hosts broadcasters
Sony Six.
Although BCCI is yet to confirm the itinerary, the
media release issued by Sony Six states that the
second Test match will be played at the Colombo
Oval from August 20 to 24 while the final Test
match of the series will be played in Pallekele from
August 28 to September 1. Meanwhile, the BCCI
is planning to advance the tour.
“At present the tour is due to start around August
11 but we want it to be advanced by a week as the
team would have returned from Zimbabwe by July
20. We are working out the modalities and the
programme will be out in 2-3 days. We are keen
that the team return from Lanka by September 2
or so, so that they have a complete break of one
month before the home series against South Africa
in October-November,” a BCCI source said.
September, however, could see the alternative
tournament to the T20 Champions League, as
planned by BCCI, taking place but no details have
emerged thus far on this front.
The Test series would be India’s first in Sri Lanka
after five years. India drew 1-1 in the previous
rubber between the two teams held in the Emerald
Isle in August, 2010.
After returning home from Lanka, India await
South Africa for a full series of Tests, ODIs and
T20Is.
South Africa will play four Test matches
(Ahmedabad, Delhi, Nagpur and Bengaluru), five
one-day internationals (Chennai, Kanpur, MP,
Rajkot and Mumbai) and three T20s (Kolkata,
Mohali, Dharamshala).

Bavalan Pathmanathan, a Sri

British Tamil League Division 3 match in Surrey,
UK, on Sunday.
The 24-year-old was playing for the Manipay
Parish Sports Club when a ball hit him in the
chest. An air ambulance was flown into the Litton
Dong recreational ground. But Pathmanathan
died of a heart failure later, the British Tamil
League official website said.
Pathmanathan was originally from Jaffna, Sri

negative and getting bogged down. I think it’s
about having the right balance. Test cricket will
benefit not only because of T20 but also
because of the mindset of these players.
Nowadays, batsmen are much more confident
playing their shots. They can use what they
learn in T20s in Tests but they should find a
balance and be able to execute it regularly.
Your Ashes prediction?
It’s going to be tough to predict, but I think
Australia have a better overall package.
England is going in as the underdog even
though they are playing at home because they
are an inexperienced Ashes outfit. Australia
have all bases covered. Having said that, this is
a funny game… If England have a great start,
then they might just be able to pull something
off. Should Australia do what they have done in
Test cricket for a while now, I think they are
going to win this. Also, I think the Ashes has
been a great advertisement for Test cricket for
the past decade or so. It is the focal point in Test
cricket. This time it has built up as well, so I am
looking forward to it.

Chameera most exciting bowler since Malinga
(colombogazette.com) Sri Lanka’s fast-bowling
coach Champaka Ramanayake has said that 23year-old Dushmantha Chameera is the most
exciting fast-bowling find he had come across
since Lasith Malinga.
Ramanayake, a former Sri Lanka seamer with 18
Test caps, was responsible for the emergence of
Malinga, and he
believes Chameera has
the same raw material
in him.
“Chameera is the
equivalent of Malinga at
the start of his career,
pace wise, but not skill
wise which he has to
develop,” Ramanayake
said. “Malinga bowled
with a lot of confidence
and had raw pace and
he had an unusual
bowling action.
“Chameera has got pace which was lacking in our
bowling line-up. It is good to have a bowler who
can hit speeds of nearly 150 kmph consistently in
your team. He has to work on his skill levels and
he needs strengthening for sustainability.”
Chameera went off the field for treatment in his
second over during Pakistan’s second innings in
Colombo, but returned afterwards to bowl with a
lot of pace and picked up three wickets. He
unsettled the Pakistani batsmen and broke the
wrist of Wahab Riaz, who was subsequently ruled
out of the Test series.
“I am very proud of his attitude that even with a
side strain he continued to bowl. Pain is
something every fast bowler has to carry with
them throughout their careers,” Ramanayake
said.
Ramanayake said that he got to know Chameera
better when he was working with the Sri Lanka A
team during the home series against Pakistan A.
“Working with the A team, there is a lot of time to
condition the bowlers better. Chameera along
with the other fast bowlers underwent similar
training as the seniors. It was enjoyable working
with the youngsters.”
Ramanayake said the arrival of Michael Main, the
new trainer from England, was helping the
bowlers get fitter and stronger. “Conditioning is
very important. We are doing a special program
on fitness and strengthening for all our fast
bowlers, it’s a six-month course,” Ramanayake
said. “With the climate and weather we have here
it’s tough on the fast bowlers, you can’t bowl them
in long spells. Sri Lanka must be the toughest
place in the world for fast bowlers. Unlike in
countries like England, New Zealand and Australia
where the conditions and pitches are suitable for
fast bowling, it’s a challenge in Asian countries.”
Dhammika Prasad, who was named Man of the
Match for his seven wickets in Sri Lanka’s win
against Pakistan in the
second Test, has
overcome fitness and
injury problems which
had held back his
progress in the past.
Ramanayake said that
Prasad’s role in the
senior team was to give
confidence to the
bowlers and work on
their mental side.
“Dhammika had a
bowling fitness issue
and when he was in the Sri Lanka ‘A’ team last
year we treated him as a special case. We
conditioned him and he was asked to bowl spells
for a day as in a match situation. It’s a mental thing
as well. Bowlers can have a bad spell or a bad day
but unlike batsmen they can always come back.”

Peterites dethrone Royal heydays in smashing show
(nation.lk) St. Peter’s College produced a
sensationally smashing show in the annals of the
schools sporting history as their tennis players
bagged the under-19 all-island title last week at the
Sri Lanka Tennis Association Tennis court in
Colombo following the success of the under-15
and under-17 teams which also won the titles.
The success of the school’s tennis was just the
tonic that the Peterites would have wanted at a
time their rugby team produced a disappointing
show in the concluded League season and gave
their fans very little to cheer.
The Peterites in the process completed the typical
Grand Slam in tennis by winning all three age
groups as well as the All Island Overall Schools
tennis Championship for the third consecutive year
and the ninth time over the past 11 years.
It was also the first time that any school had won
all three competitive age groups since it was
introduced by the Ministry of Education. The
Peterite show had even outshone the days since
the early 1990s when Royal College were kings in
tennis and dominated the arena.
But unlike Royal, the Peterite dominance came at
a time more schools contest the title by investing
heavily. By creating unparalled history the Peterites
have raised the bar and taken schools tennis to a
higher level which makes them the team to beat in
the future.
The Peterites signaled their entry when their
number one player Chehan Fernando defeated
Ananda’s top exponent Akila Vimukthi to take a 2312 win over the Anandians.
When the two heavyweights Royal and St. Peter’s
locked horns, Chehan Fernando blasted out
opponent B Suren who beat him at a recent Otters
tournament as the Peterites won 23-12.
The Trinitians and the Benedictines merely fell by
the wayside.
In the semi finals the Peterites took on the strong
Colombo International School (CIS) team and with
skipper Davishka Ranasinghe defying medical
prescription over an illness they triumphed their
way into the final.
Shanitha Perera and U Dilshanth pulled off a
remarkable win in the deciding doubles 6/3, 6/0.
In the other semi final Royal beat S. Thomas’ 3-2
to book a date with the Peterites.
Overcoming illness to Ranasinghe, Nabeel Sabri
and Shanitha Perera along with a back injury on
Chehan Fernando, the Peterites were determined
to go the distance.
Chehan Fernando beat Royal captain Vikum
Jayasuriya 6-3, 6/3 while Davishka Ranasinghe
with Nabeel Sabri won the first doubles 6-7, 6-1, 61 as the Peterites went two up.

Vijaya and Nalanda joint champions
S M Jeffrey Abdeen - Kandy Sports
Correspondent
(dailynews.lk) Vijaya College, Matale and Nalanda
College, Colombo emerged joint champions at the
all island schools boys under 17 hockey
championship organised by the Sri Lanka School
Hockey Association and the Matale School
Hockey Association when the find, ended in an
exciting scoreless draw at Edward Park Matale.
Both team appeared to the tired when the finals
began as this was their third match for the day.
They played the quarter finals in the morning and
later the semi finals, followed by the finals.
Thirty two teams participated in this tournament
and the main problem of the organiser was a lack
of another venue which resulted in matches being
not worked off to schedule.
The Bernard Aluvihare Stadium with barren
patches at certain places was not the best of
venues at this hockey tours. It is quite large and
was divided into two courts and two matches were
played simultaneously. This was not an issue the
other venue was Edward Park.
The best of all venues Nandimithra Ekanayake
International Hockey Stadium with its excellent
infrastructure and facilities cannot be used as the
astro tarf wheel is over 12 years old needs
replacement. Some of the matches were also
played at a ground owned by Sirimavo
Bandaranaike Vidyalaya close to the hockey
stadium.
The finals produced good hockey though the
players were a little slow on the field. They did well
to defend their territory especially in the shooting
range to thwart their opponents from scoring.
Before the commencement of the match the two
team, were introduced to the chief guest and
former National Hockey coach A J M Farook and
the Present President of the Sri Lanka School
Hockey Association Mrs Chandrakanthi
Karunanayake and others.
Roshan Hemantha and S N Jayasinghe umpired
Joseph Vaz College, Wennappuwa scored
stunning 4-1 on penalty strokes over St Thomas
College, Matale to win the consolation finals, at
the Bernard Aluwihare Stadium.
It was quite on plucky performance by the
Wennappuwa whose hockey is on the rise as they
last became joint champions with Christ Church
College at the all island schools under 19
tournament at Matale.
The ability for the Joseph Vazians to give a good
flight to Matale schools in Matale is a good sign of
progress.
In the semi final Vijaya College got the better of St
Thomas College Matale 1-0 and Nalanda College
beat Joseph Vaz College 3-2 on penalty strokes
after the match ended in a scoreless draw.

New playing conditions come into effect, says ICC
(island.lk) The new playing conditions for Tests,
One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and Twenty20
Internationals (T20Is) have come into effect with
the series between Bangladesh and South Africa,
which started in Mirpur earlier yesterday (Sunday,
5 July).
It is important to note that the playing conditions
are applicable to international cricket and must be
read together with the Laws of Cricket. Whilst a
playing condition may affect the Laws of Cricket as
they may apply to international cricket, these
changes are not amendments to the Laws of
Cricket themselves.
In addition to the amendments to the playing
conditions (outlined below), a revised ICC Code of
Conduct will come into effect on Wednesday, 8
July.
The main amendments to the playing conditions
are:
ODI - Fielding Restrictions
No more compulsory catchers required in Overs 110.
No more batting Powerplay.
5 fielders allowed outside the circle in overs 41-50.
ODI - Interval
If Team 2 is batting and a match is close to
conclusion at the time the scheduled interval is
reached, either captain can make a request to the
umpires to extend play by an extra 15 minutes /
minimum 4 overs to obtain a result.
Once the interval is taken, the referee has also
been given discretion to reduce the interval time if
he feels a result is imminent.
ODI & T20I - Free Hit from All No Ball
A Free Hit is to be awarded after all modes of No
ball.
If the No ball was called for having too many
fielders outside the circle, the field can be changed
for the Free Hit even if there is no change in
striker, but only to the extent of correcting the
breach.
Test, ODI & T20I - Significant movement by a
Fielder or Wicketkeeper
The Law relating to defining significant movement
of a fielder or a wicket keeper has been amended
to allow movement before the batsman has played

Test & ODI - DRS – Requesting a Player Review
Change to Clause 3.2 of the DRS Playing
Conditions
a) Teams must request a Player Review within 15
seconds of the ball becoming dead, but one
exception has now been added.
i. If the umpires use an Umpire Review to answer
an appeal for a Caught decision, for either a fair
catch or a bump ball, the request for a Player
Review of that Caught decision may be made by
either team within 15
seconds of the result of the Umpire Review being
communicated.
Test, ODI & T20I - Third Umpire – Contact with
SpiderCam
New Clause 3.11 in DRS Playing Conditions,
Clause 8 in the Third Umpire Playing Conditions.
The on-field umpire can now use the TV umpire to
assist in detecting whether the ball has been in
contact with any part of SpiderCam - the camera,
its apparatus or its cables above the playing area.
There have been no changes to the Women’s Test,
ODI or T20I playing conditions at this time.
