Email [email protected] Ph 3026643 Fax 3026871 From the Principal … Welcome to the last Longbeach School Newsletter for the 2014. As per usual things are very busy around here as we prepare the final assessments, end of year reports and prize giving. The teachers have been slaving over the end of year reports which is a new and improved version of the old report. The old report, which we have been using for 5 years now, has come to the end of its life. The old style of grades against generic statements no longer fits with contemporary education practice. Contemporary thinking is that reports are to be a ‘narrative’ style. This is a written report describing specifically what the students can do and the progress they have made. Enclosed with the report, due home on the 15th December 2014, is a detailed explanation about the report and tables showing where the students’ achievements fits with expectations. Also included with the report will be each student’s class, stationery list and teacher for 2015. Sorting classes out is a complex operation. It involves lots of discussion with teachers as we work to fit 8 year levels into 6 classrooms whilst making sure we balance the numbers and place students in the optimal classroom. We talk to some parents when the classroom placement is outside of the ‘norm’ or expected. Classroom placement is an enormous task which we take very seriously as we juggle the students’ ability, personality, maturity, social and emotional well-being, match to the teacher and the class dynamics as a whole. Dividing 8 year levels in to six classes means that there are going to be year levels combined. Also because some year levels are larger than others, there will be the same year level in 2 classrooms. Logically this means that some students will be with a year level less than theirs and others will be with a year level above theirs. It is just the nature of the beast we are dealing with! About this time each year we hear the discussion about the concerns about students being kept back. This thinking comes about because a year level is split and some of that year level is with a year level less than theirs. Please let me reiterate, todays education curriculum is ‘seamless’ and students are not kept back. This means there is not a Year 3 programme or any other year level with a specific programme/textbook which we work from at Longbeach School. We have teaching resources which are levelled as a guide but teachers assess each students learning needs then tailor a programme to meet their needs. This means that when a teacher is working with a group of students, the group is often multiyear level. These groups change all the time over the course of the year as students learn at different rates. Also the students have different levels of knowledge and skills in different areas of learning. Whatever the yard stick, we do not stick to a prescriptive programme as each students needs are targeted. Our mission is, from our charter, to have students achieving to the best of their ability. This is realised by providing teaching and learning programmes to meet the needs of the students. Prize Giving - This year our prize giving will be held at the Ashburton Events Centre on the 17th of December. Feel free to arrive from 6.00pm and enjoy a lemonade. The doors to the auditorium will open at 6.30pm ready to start at 7pm. Longbeach Challenge – Wow what an awesome day last Sunday. Around 965 competitors traipsing across the lands down at Longbeach. Please remember all our sponsors whose generosity ensures the event is a financial success as well as a great community day out. Thanks to all the volunteers who helped out with race packs, marshalling, in the food tents, on site etc and a special thanks to the Longbeach Coastal Challenge committee members from Longbeach School and Hinds and District Lions. Job well done to our man on the mike Bernie Davidson, loved the enthusiasm!!! Final numbers were up slightly from last year at 961, not quite the 1,000 we were hoping for but great that we continue to edge closer. Once again the 35km classic challenge proved our most popular event and we were very lucky to have Anton Cooper along to inspire other young riders. Some stars of our own shone through also, young and not so young, which is great to see. Sophie Mulder won this rocking new bike kindly donated by Paul Wylie Cyclerama. WESTSIDE HIRE A big thank you to Dave Jones at Westside Hire for kindly donating the use of their 3 inch pump to us to pump out the water from our school swimming pool for the past 3 seasons.
