“Mitten Pattern” for Children
Quick & Easy Instructions
One yard of 60” wide polar fleece (36”L x 60”W) can easily be sewn into approximately 9
pairs of children’s mittens with included pattern.
Supplies to Sew 9 Pair
 1 yard polar fleece
 3 yards, ¼” elastic
 Thread, matching or contrasting
 Pins
 Scissors
 Tape Measure or Sewing Gauge
 Paper & Pencil
 Wooden Spoon or Wooden Point Turner (opt.)
Layout/Cutting (See Diagram #1)
 Trace 2 mitten patterns onto paper, and cut out pattern pieces (see Pattern)
 To sew multiple pairs of mittens, fold fabric in half
 Lay pattern pieces as shown
 Cut first pair of mittens and repeat layout on remaining fabric
 Cut 4 lengths of elastic, 2 ¾” long for each pair
Sewing Sequence (See Pattern)
 Place cut mittens on table top with one thumb facing right and the other thumb facing
left.
 Fold the cuff 1/2” back and sew using a zig-zag stitch creating a hem.
 Place elastic 1 ½” from the bottom of the hem edge, stretching elastic across to fit width
of mitten and sew it down using a zig-zag stitch. This is the mitten wrist. Do this with
both mitten pieces.
 Place mittens right sides together (elastic facing out), using a ¼” seam allowance, begin
sewing with a backstitch, change to straight stitch and sew around entire outer edge of
mitten ending with a backstitch. NOTE: When sewing around the thumb, stop sewing at
the 1st pivot point, lift the presser foot, pivot the mitten, lower presser foot, sew a few
stitches to the 2nd pivot point, lift presser foot, pivot the mitten, lower the presser foot,
and continue sewing
 Clip inside the curve seam where the top of the thumb curves to avoid a pucker.
 Turn mitten right side out. If necessary, use the eraser end of a pencil or a wooden point
turner to poke the thumb of the mitten right side out.
