Barkcloth is one of the worlds oldest
non-woven material from Uganda.
This 2-hour workshop will introduce
you to just a few of the creative
approaches with this versatile
material using traditional Ugandan
techniques and materials. Students

of carrying out ideas in hand
stitch, based on African designs
and influences. Work produced
can be taken home and developed

Tatting is a form of lace made using
a shuttle. Many lace items can be
made using this technique also
the finished results will enhance all
your needlework pieces and give

Broomstick Lace Crochet Scarf

Learn to make Broomstick Lace
with a crochet hook and a very
large knitting needle! Broomstick
lace is made by making large loops
over a 10-20mm needle, then taking
them off in groups of 3-5 with
double crochet stitches. During this
session we will cover the basics,
following a pattern, how to start
and finish, making loops of different
sizes and taking them off in
different groupings. You will start a
Broomstick scarf, with enough yarn

Transfer printing or dyeing is a way
of first creating a design on paper

use these dyes to print onto cotton

Hardanger for Beginners

This Norwegian needlework
technique is based around satin
stitch and cutwork. Yes, you will be
cutting holes in your stitching – but
don’t worry, it’s not nearly so scary
as it sounds! Using perle cottons, we
will start with the basic satin stitches
called Kloster blocks, then add some
colourful backstitch decoration
before cutting part of the fabric. The
cut parts will be embellished with
filling stitches, giving a lacy finish.
The finished stitching will then be
used to decorate a bookmark. This
workshop is suitable for people who
have never done any Hardanger
before, but some previous stitching
experience in other techniques
(for example cross stitch) is
recommended. Children from the

The heat press is a large, hot iron
which heats to 200 degrees. During
this workshop you will be using

papers and transferring this onto

create a mix media collage. Nicole

Scandinavian style. Learn how to
change colours effectively within a
double crochet fabric, also working
in a spiral. We also learn how to
read (and make our own) tapestry
crochet chart, start with a magic
ring, and make a lovely Christmas

and enough yarn for at least 3

pleating fabric– combined with
the magical blues of a natural
fermentation natural Indigo vat are
endless and the resulting fabrics
are to ‘dye for’, making your work
totally unique! This workshop,
suitable for all levels of student, who
will be taught in a structured way.
Students will prepare and dye 2
sample fabrics (one cotton and one
silk) with SHIBORI (the inventive art
of Japanese shaped resist dyeing)
and Vivien will share her knowledge
of preparation and maintenance
of a natural fermentation Indigo
vat, offering the student a sound
knowledge and provide a solid
foundation upon which future
developments could be made.

Thread Catcher and Pin Cushion
Celia Banks
In this workshop you will make a
fabric pin cushion, tool-holder and
thread catcher bin. The finished
article can be used at the side of
your machine to store small tools
and pins or across the arm of a sofa
and is extremely useful to take to
sewing classes. Using co-ordinating
quilting cottons, the project will
be completed up to the point of
filling the pin cushion. This can be
completed at home using a filling
of choice such as wadding with dry
rice, lentils or silver sand. Suitable

A selection of unusual things to
do with your used tea bags! Print,
rub, fill, bond, laminate, gild and
stitch. Add paper, lace, gilding flakes,
sequins, fibres and leaves; use a
gel medium lamination technique
to create a mixed media surface
ready to stitch and embellish. You
will create a small panel which could
be mounted or used as a book
cover or for cards. Suitable for any

Tissue Fitting for Busy People

This is a one-hour practical
demonstration and explanation of
the principles and techniques of
tissue-fitting commercial sewing
patterns for the best results, using
the Palmer Pletsch system. You
will be shown how to measure
effectively so that the correct size of
pattern is chosen and then be given
an overview of the process, using
a specific fitting pattern, gingham
bodices and fashion patterns. There
will be demonstrations of the most
common alterations and examples
of many useful tools. The session

here by Archaeologists. During this
workshop we will show and teach
the most popular Latvian mittens’
knitting techniques. Each student
will be given a kit when contains
woollen yarn for a pair of mittens,
step by step instructions and a
coloured pattern. Students will start
knitting in the class and will be

Crochet the Tunisian way. Tunisian
Crochet is worked on a special
long hook with a stopper on the
end, so that the stitches stay on
the hook. Once started you work
with a forward and backward pass,
keeping the right side of the work
facing at all times. Moving on from
Tunisian simple stitch, this class
focuses on Tunisian knit stitch, purl
stitch, and combinations to create
interesting stitch textures including
basket weave and honeycomb
stitch. This is aimed at people who
have crocheted before and may
have tried Tunisian Simple Stitch.

In this interactive demonstration
Angela will show you how to use
a sketchbook app on your iPad.
You will be shown how to use all
the tools to make creative and
individual designs. These can
provide inspiration for stitch or
make a background to stitch onto.
You will pick up lots of tips about
how to print onto fabric from the
sketch books created within the
app. This is suitable for all levels For
this demonstration is it advisable to
bring your own fully charged iPad
with the app Paper53 plus tools
downloaded onto it. At present this
app is not able to be downloaded

Vibrant Felt and Bead Necklace

colourful felt beads using wool tops
and strands of silk. You will combine
these with wooden beads that she
will provide and string onto beading
wire to make a stunningly vibrant
necklace long enough to put over
your head so no need for clumsy
clasps. You can choose colours to
suit your colouring and clothing so
that your necklace will be unique to

Learn the fundamental technique in
using a Lucet starting with historic
hand techniques and leading to
more modern hand techniques
using a 21st century Lucet, designed
to move much faster and provide
the groundwork for a new craft of
Advanced Lucetting. Students will
have hand-on one-to-one tuition in
lucetting and will have projects to
complete at a later date. Suitable
for beginners, children are also

Vintage Linen Cushion Cover with
Kantha Stitching

In this 90 minute hand stitching
workshop you will stitch onto a
variety of vintage tray clothes,
hankies and table linens. You will
learn the techniques of Japanese
Boro and Indian kantha stitching.
Kantha stitching uses a running
stitch and you will be taught how
to use different thickness of thread
and variations of running stitch to
complete your cushion cover front.
In the workshop you will start to
stitch the front of your cushion and
full instructions will be provided of
how to complete the back at home.

given one wood block and basic
materials such as carving tools,

aimed at all levels including children
