8 Wing firefighters are just a year away from stepping
completely into the 21st Century and moving into a
modern facility which will let them perform their duties with up-to-date equipment capable of meeting
today’s enhanced firefighting requirements.
The Honourable Chris Alexander, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of National Defence, officially turned the
sod on a new 3,176 square metre
fire hall which will include 14 bays,
a control room, offices, training rooms, equipment maintenance areas, firefighter sleeping
area, a physical training room and recreation
rooms.
The new fire hall is long overdue for many reasons
– larger bays are required to accommodate 12,000-litre
fire trucks in accordance with growing needs of the base;
the new location will allow firefighters to meet minimum
emergency response timelines; and the new facility is
design standard for energy efficient and sustainable construction.
“This government is delivering on its commitment
to modernize defence infrastructure and equipment to
meet the challenges of the 21st century,” Mr. Alexander
told those at the official sod turning ceremony Tuesday
morning. “The construction of this impressive, new fire
hall is one among several initiatives which will give 8
Wing Trenton the means to support our new Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) fleets and it contributes to the
economy of local communities.”
The current fire hall was built in 1962 and had a gross
area of 566 square metres with a single storey building
and eight vehicle bays. It will be reassigned for use by the
Military Police once the new fire hall becomes home to
the 64 firefighters at 8 Wing.
The new fire hall is a $12.1 million construction contract awarded to M.J. Dixon Construction Ltd. of Mississauga. It is expected to generate approximately 66 jobs
and be completed in June of 2013.
Wing Commander Col Sean Friday said the new fire
hall was near and dear to his heart because the updated
facility would ensure 8 Wing has the required fire rescue
capabilities. The fact that construction was a little beyond
the groundbreaking stage was a good thing, because it
meant the new facility would be in service faster.
8 Wing received the first of two 12,000-litre crash
trucks in the summer of 2011 and 2011 with a final two
scheduled to be delivered late summer 2012. The fire hall
also has one 5,000 litre air-deployable crash truck and is
expecting to receive two structural fire trucks in the summer of 2014 and 2015.
Mr. Alexander said the new fire hall became increasingly necessary with the investment of nearly a billion
dollars in infrastructure since 2007 at 8 Wing, including

Mexico Visit to 8 Wing Trenton

Senior officials from the National Defence College of
Mexico visited 8 Wing Trenton last Friday, which is part
of their recent official visit to Canada.
The purpose of their visit was to learn about Canada’s
strategic vision regarding national security and international operations. The guests were interested to visit 8
Wing because of its role as a major transport and air mobility hub for the Canadian Forces.
There were over 70 high-ranking military officials
from the Mexican Army, Air Force and Navy who took
part in the visit. Several high-ranking civilian government
officials and instructors from the National Defence College of Mexico also participated in the tour.
Lieutenant-Colonel Dave Alexander, Wing Chiefof-Staff, briefed the participants at the Officers’ Mess. The
briefing focused primarily on general information about 8
Wing’s capabilities, missions, and presence at home and
abroad.
The Mexican guests were very interested and asked
several questions related to logistics, the mission of Alert
and the training cycle for pilots and support personnel.
A symbolic exchange of mementos followed the briefing. They also stopped briefly next to the CC-177 Globemaster III for a photo opportunity.
The delegation departed Trenton onboard Mexican
Air Force B-727, which was parked next to 8 Wing’s passenger terminal.

TIGER EX 2012 keeps searchers on their toes

TIGER EX 2012 took place in Val d’Or, Quebec from
May 15-18. Over 100 members of 424 Squadron deployed on the yearly exercise to maintain their capabilities of manning a ‘Major Search’ from a deployed
location. All aspects of the deployment are simulated,
from the initial call-out - known as a squadron recall to organizing transport from Trenton to the deployed
location.
At 7:30 a.m. on May 15, the squadron was briefed
as to the situation. A major search was to take place
in Val d’Or. One of the CH-146 Griffons was loaded
onto the CC-177 Globemaster III and flown to the
deployed location along with the administrative staff,
the exercise directing staff and the maintainers. Two
CC-130 Hercules followed with more passengers and
the last Griffon arrived later in the day, their crew having been tasked on a true SAR mission earlier that
night.
The goal of the exercise is twofold; to practice
working from a deployed location but also to facilitate a significant amount of training. Two new Search
Masters and an assistant Search Master became qualified during the exercise. These are the members who
work from the headquarters and manage all aspects of
the search from the ground. They piece together all of
the sighting reports, information about the victims and
release information as well to public. They task aircraft
to search based on that information and, luckily for
them, they found all the members of the missing aircraft of this scenario uninjured.
Concurrently to the Search Masters, other scenarios were being played out so that all rescuers could
put their skills to the test. Pilot advancement towards
upgrades to Aircraft Captain were made but not completed due to inclement weather.
The Griffon crews made a total of 20 sorties totaling 26 hours of flying while the Hercules hours totaled
18 hours on seven sorties, burning 50,000 litres of fuel
over the three-day exercise. Sar Techs made numerous
jumps from both aircraft into simulated rescue scenes
where imaginary medical attention was required.
Casualties were volunteers from 424 Squadron, from
SERABEC and from the local population. SERABEC,
a civilian volunteer search and rescue organization often
called upon for their services, conducted observer training for themselves as well and will be present at SAREX,
the national Search and Rescue Exercise that will be
held in Val d’Or this fall..
New capabilities were tested on the exercise. A Sea
Rescue Kit (SRK), also known as a dingy, was obtained
for the first time to conduct training over water, as water
rescues are more difficult to conduct especially at night.
Re-fuelling from a Hercules to a Griffon was another
new capability that was practiced over the three days.
The exercise took an extreme amount of planning on
the part of squadron staff but exercise organizers Capt
Sebastien Lemire and Sgt Audrey Bourgoin kept the
training on track despite the numerous changes due to
Mother Nature’s seeming unwillingness to cooperate.

Relay for Life in Canada’s most northerly post

Cancer is a disease that has touched many lives, including those working at the world’s northernmost permanently inhabited Station, CFS Alert. Consequently, on
the evening of May 19, CFS Alert participated in the
world’s most northern “Relay for Life.”
Relay for Life is the Canadian Cancer Society’s
signature fundraising event. It is a non-competitive
overnight relay held in hundreds of communities across
Canada each year. This year marked the first of its kind
for CFS Alert and also for Nunavut, Canada’s largest
territory.
Relay for Life is a 12 hour overnight event that
generally brings teams of 10 people together to take
turns walking or running around a track. Usually an
event consists of many teams, however with a Station
population of approximately 70 personnel (military
and civilian) CFS Alert opted for a single team consisting of 25 people.
The event was initiated and organized by Pte
Kristy Doyle. Through dedicated fundraising efforts,
“Team Alert” was able to raise an astounding $9,000.
These funds will be used for cancer research, advocacy
efforts and community support programs.
With a small population in comparison to more
“southern” communities, Alert’s relay had only one survivor to honor in the traditional victory lap - MWO
Jim Britt, 57, the Station’s Construction and Engineering Officer (SCEO) from CFB Trenton. MWO Britt
won his battle with cancer in October of 2004. Participating in the survivors’ victory lap he did not only walk,
but ran! With a goal to walk a kilometer for every year
of his life, MWO Britt not only accomplished this but
also three additional kilometres!

CFS Alert personnel attended the opening
ceremonies of Relay for Life.
Alert’s relay was a huge success, with an inspiring
outpouring of support being provided by teammates,
Station personnel and visitors alike. At the opening
ceremonies, through the lighting of luminaries, a moment of silence and honoring MWO Britt in his survivor’s lap, Station personnel took part in connecting
with loved ones who have been touched by cancer.
The spirit of the event lingers within those who
participated, particularly those who braved the -20°C
air for the inaugural lap to honor and remember those
who have suffered and are battling this horrible disease.
Overall, Team Alert walked and ran a total distance of
916kms during the event!
Cancer knows no boundaries, which was apparent
as we completed the event in the isolation of the Canadian Arctic. The ripples caused by this campaign have
reached much further shores than ever imagined, including Iqaluit where they hope to follow Alert’s lead
and participate in Relay for Life next year as well.
CFS Alert was proud to have participated and
contributed to this important cause, and look forward
to another successful event next year!

C17 maintainers conduct first Home Station Check in Trenton

With the recent opening of the new 1 Hangar at
8 Wing Trenton, the Maintainers from 429 (Transport) Squadron didn’t have to deploy to the United
States to conduct a Home Station Check (HSC) for
the CC-177 Globemaster III aircraft.
“The new 1 Hangar is 8 Wing’s first installation that is specifically designed as a permanent
C17 maintenance facility,” said Warrant Officer Paul
Lefebvre of 429 Squadron.
Other facilities in Canada up to this point have
had some limitations and have not allowed the 429
Squadron maintainers to conduct a full spectrum of
field level maintenance for the C17.
“In the past, whenever we needed to conduct the
HSC, our main field level recurring inspection, we
would deploy a team of maintainers to Jackson, Mississippi to use the facilities of the 172nd Air Wing
of the Air National Guard,” he said.
The first HSC for the C17 aircraft was conducted at 1 Hangar from April 30 to May 10, by a crew
of 21 maintenance personnel who worked day and
night to ensure that work is done properly and on
schedule.
“We conducted aircraft wash, post-wash lube,
HSC card deck inspection with associated rectifications, incorporation of required aircraft Time Compliant Technical Orders (TCTOs), Out of Sequence
Inspection (OSI) items as well as the life rafts’ fiveyear inspection, Deferred Defects (DDs), aircraft
paint touch-ups and the F-117 engine EcoPower
Wash followed by the post inspection ground-run,”
he noted.
Throughout the process, 429 Squadron’s maintenance and supply personnel collaborate with stakeholders from 8 Air Maintenance Squadron, Boeing
field service representatives and Aerospace and Telecommunications Engineering Support Squadron in
order to ensure that the inspection goals are met.

“There are several advantages for conducting
HSC in Trenton,” said Sergeant Steve Copeland.
“Supply personnel are able to get parts to us faster
and with less difficulty. Most importantly, we are
able to go home every day to our family.”
He also noted it also allows them to offer better training opportunities to their newer technicians
and that the long travel days are over.
“Because we are now capable of doing HSC here
in Trenton, we now have the ability to train new apprentices in a maintenance environment that they
don’t see on the flight line everyday,” said Corporal
Scott Thompson. “With the costs of travel and accommodations these young technicians couldn’t be
afforded the opportunity to join us in the United
States; but now, they can simply walk to 1 Hangar.”
The maintainers noted that what the new 1
Hangar has made the biggest difference in their lives
is being able to see their families every night and not
being under the stress and extra long days with last
minute aircraft snags and a set departure time.

Two members of the Construction Engineering Refrigeration Mechanical
Team (Tony Deveau and Greg Alvey) have been working hard over the past
three weeks replacing the industrial dishwashing machine at the Yukon
Galley. The team at W Food Svcs have been patiently waiting and working
extra hard to insure that 8 Wing’s community was being preserved from
a decrease in service. WCE should be commended for punching through
the deadlines and hopefully finishing slightly later than the anticipated
deadline. The delay has been caused by the customisation of a stainless
steel docking system as well as the machining of the garbrator.

Op Southern Reach increases professional bonds
Brazilian-born CF pilot Capt Eric Willrich waves his native flag upon the
arrival of the final CF-18, piloted by Maj André Lessard, at Pirassununga,
Brazil. Capt Willrich, who hails from Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, is a CC177 Globemaster pilot at 429 Transport Squadron, 8 Wing Trenton, and
was a CF Snowbird from 2008 to 2010.

A Royal Canadian Air Force detachment, including an element of the
fighter force, airlift and air-to-air refuelling support, is conducting Operation
Southern Reach from May 5 to 26 to
increase its professional bonds with the
air forces of Brazil, Chile and Jamaica.
To further develop Canada’s established relationships with these na-
tions, the RCAF’s focus is to conduct
mutual briefings, demonstrations and
flights with our partner air forces to
enhance institutional rapport, promote
mutual dialogue, and help position the
Department of National Defence and
the Canadian Forces as a fully engaged
partner in defence and security.

Learn to solve problems without anger
Anger is an emotion just like happiness, sadness and fear. The
average person experiences one angry incident per day and
will become annoyed 20 times per week.
Anger is natural, normal, and is a signal that there is a
problem to solve. The real problem may not be the situation,
but how you respond. To solve a problem without becoming
angry, it is useful to adopt a problem-solving attitude with a
few key steps.
Recognize a problem exists (or is beginning). Become
aware of negative thinking patterns, emotions or sensations.
Reduce the stress of the situation. Scan your body for
tension and release stress through deep breathing, muscle relaxation, or visualization techniques.
Challenge your thinking. Reframe the situation in a more
positive way and refocus on the problem, not the person(s)
involved.
Make a problem statement. State specifically what the
problem is that needs to be solved and be comprehensive in
considering all of the facts.
Brainstorm solutions. Come up with as many as you can.
Consider how you responded in the past and realize that a
different response is required to achieve a different outcome.
Weigh the consequences and choose the solution that
will provide the best outcome. Consider the costs and benefits for now and in the long term. The deliberate action of
making a list and eliminating one item at a time may help to
take the emotion out of the situation.
After considering the alternatives, act on the solution
that makes the most sense.
Finally, evaluate the outcome. If the problem was solved,
determine what worked in finding the solution. If the problem was not solved, consider what did not work and what
could be done differently next time to improve the process.
Over time, the steps to problem solving will become easier and allow for constructive solutions to problem solving
while avoiding negative consequences of angry behaviour.

A medicine circle formed Wednesday at noon at the
Three Sisters Park at CFB Trenton completing a circle
which originated several years ago with LieutenantGeneral Andre Deschamps, Commander of the Royal
Canadian Air Force, participating in an early organizational event.
National Aboriginal Awareness Week was celebrated at 8 Wing Trenton with a day filled with Aboriginal
cultural experiences to increase awareness of Aboriginal
culture.
“It is a day of awareness and to realize the Aboriginal culture is still living and strong today,” said Guy
Mandeville, a former member of the military.
Colonel Sean Friday, 8 Wing Commander, noted
Canadian history is rooted in associations started centuries ago but which continue today.
“We are a stronger community that works together
and brings all our strengths together in a day like today
with this circle,” he said.

Aboriginal champion Lieutenant-Colonel Dan
Harris noted Aboriginals have always been a part of the
defence community.
“On each occasion that our country has gone to
war, Canada’s native soldiers overcame cultural challenges and made impressive sacrifices and contributions
to help the nation in its efforts to restore world peace,”
he said.
LCol Harris added the Three Sisters Garden established by the military behind the Officers’ Mess is a
special place for Aboriginals.
“This garden is a special place for Aboriginals to
partake in healing and in teaching, and also a welcoming
spot for everyone employed on the Wing,” he stated.
LCol Harris, in addressing the gathering, said the
Aboriginal teachings have much to offer everyone in
the care and preservation of the land.
Aboriginal Advisory Committee co-chairs Will
Green and Corporal Raul Chavez said Aboriginal
Awareness Day was created to approach communities to
make them aware of the Aboriginal culture in Canada.
According to Mr. Mandeville, this was the fifth annual Aboriginal Awareness Day and organizers began
working in January to bring about the day packed with
workshops including Aboriginal crafts such as making
beaded necklaces and pouches, an Aboriginal medicine
workshop, drum making and a drumming and dancing
workshop.
The day would also include a special ceremony by
the Tyendinaga Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte to welcome back veterans from Afghanistan and a healing
circle designed to bring everyone together.
“They did a special ceremony nine years ago when
they were going away, so they felt it was only right to
welcome them back,” Mr. Mandeville noted.
“The Three Sisters Garden was donated by the
base,” he said. “It’s an Aboriginal culture garden but it is
open to anyone who wants to come here through lunch
and relax and meditate. It’s kept up by the base and it is
a place to hold our day.”

Hazardous waste should be a concern around your home
Hazardous waste isn’t a
problem just for large
industries. Your
home is full
of hazardous
products you
must dispose of
safely to protect
the environment.
When these products are just dumped
into a landfill, they
can leach into the
ground and poll u t e the water table. They
also contribute to air and soil pollution
for years to come.
Check out this list of common
products which can be unfriendly to
the environment: Batteries, cleaners
and drain cleaners, herbicides and pesticides, paint, motor oil, pool chemicals,
polishes, solvents, anti-freeze, pharmaceuticals, stain removers, toilet cleaners,
wax strippers, oven cleaners, some bathroom cleaners, bleach, lye, wood stains
and preservatives, varnish removers and
paint thinner.
Try safer alternatives:
• Baking soda makes a good scouring
powder.
• Vinegar and water cleans windows
and smooth surfaces.
• To make an all-purpose cleaner, mix
a half cup of ammonia, a half cup of
white vinegar, a quarter cup of baking soda and a half gallon of water.
• For a disinfectant, mix a half cup of
borax per gallon of hot water.
• For a dishwasher detergent, mix one
part of borax and one part of washing soda.
• For a dishwashing liquid, try a natural soap or a phosphate-free product.
Alternative drain cleaners:
• Use a handful of baking soda and a
half cup of white vinegar. Cover the
drain tightly for one minute while
the mixture fizzes. Flush. Put a half
cup of salt and a half cup of baking
soda down the drain. Follow with
•
•
six cups of boiling water. Let it sit
for a few hours or overnight. Flush
with water.
Pour hot water with a half a cup of
washing soda down the drain.
Use a plunger, a coat hanger or a
mechanical snake to clear drains.
Painting:
• Use old paint as primer.
• Before disposing of oil-based or
enamel paint cans, take outdoors
and remove the lid to allow the contents to air-dry and harden.
• Allow used turpentine to sit in a
closed jar until the paint particles
have settled. Pour off the clear turpentine and use again.
Air quality:
• Instead of aerosol products, use
pump spray bottles.
• Make your own air fresheners by
boiling or simmering sweet herbs,
flower petals or spices. A good mixture is cinnamon and cloves. Keep
house plants to clean the air in your

home.
Keeping your home clean and aired
out will help eliminate odour problems.
Clean heat registers, air ducts and
vents on a regular basis to improve
air quality.
If you use dangerous products:
• Don’t purchase more than you
need.
• Use them up, or give leftovers to
someone who can use them.
• Separate hazardous materials from
your household garbage.
• Never dispose of hazardous materials in the sewer system, in storm
drains, soil or open bodies of water.
• Contact your local government for
information on how to dispose of
them safely.
The average household has a surprising number of products which can
cause damage to the environment. Use
them sparingly, and dispose of them
with care.
Bella Pompier 8 Wing’s
firefighter mascot

Where 8 Wing firefighters gather, Bella won’t be far away.
Bella Pompier is the mascot of the 8 Wing fire hall presented by a military firefighter, according to Deputy Fire
Chief Master Warrant Officer Jacques Rene.
Bella got her first name thanks to a base commissionaire who heard of a Dalmation dog named Bella finding six
people during the Oklahoma federal building bombing in
1995. Later on, the same dog saved two firefighters in other
operations.
“So we decided to call her Bella,” MWO Rena said. “Her
last name is Pompier because she represents all of us and she
shows up for any photo op.”
Bella, true to form, made an appearance at the sod turning for the new 3 176 square-metre, $12.1 million fire hall
which will house the 64 8 Wing firefighters and their equip- Bella Pompier, the 8 Wing firefighter mascot, is pictured here with Deputy Fire Chief Master

57 years that the unique training opportunities of air cadets have been

National Defence and the local sponsoring committee of 201 Duke of Edinburgh Army, Navy, Air Force Veterans. Cadets receive first aid, air rifle
shooting, drill, air environment, flight
theory, sports, and citizenship instruction during the school year.

2012 Ontario Region Triathlon Development Camp (RDC)

The first week of May was an exciting
week at 8 Wing/CFB Trenton as athletes from bases and wings across Ontario converged for the Ontario Region
Triathlon Development Camp.
With 14 athletes of varying abilities from beginner triathletes hoping to
complete their first sprint triathlon race
this summer to veteran triathletes with
CISM and CF Nationals experience,
there was much conversation and mentorship among the participants.
The camp was composed of five days
of training, with each day starting early
(6 a.m.) and sometimes running until 8
p.m. in the evening as we managed to fit
three to four physical workouts (swim,
bike, run, yoga, etc) into eachday, intermingled with theory sessions and lots of
visits to the Mess hall to “feed the machines”.
Many athletes have provided comments on the camp but I think 2Lt JF
Landre said it best:
“It was a true privilege to learn and
strengthen technique with advice from
experienced coaches, but also from
elite athletes in their field of expertise
whether it be swimming, running, cycling or triathlon itself. The program
provided, as well, a broader perspective
of CISM athlete’s reality, providing additional guidance on equipment maintenance (e.g. cycling), race-time optimization techniques with inexpensive gear
(e.g. racing belts and elastics) as well as
how to leverage nutrition factors during
training sessions and on competition
day.”
With the end of the camp on Sun-
day afternoon, the athletes were sorry
to end their week of training, but most
of all, they will miss the camaraderie of
like minded athletes pushing them to
develop further in a challenging and rewarding sport.
I wish to thank all the athletes for
their positive attitude towards each and
every training opportunity and their
willingness to work together to accomplish our goal of a fun and interactive
development camp. I wish you all well in
your upcoming season and look forward
to seeing you all at next year’s camp.

New Pilot Project Francophone Pre-school

The Trenton MFRC has been
approached by the Regional
French Network to offer a
French-language Pre-school
program within our Licensed
Daycare. Although we offer
bilingual services at this time
there is no French language
service in the Hastings area.
We will be offering 8 preschool
spaces for this program in September 2012. In order for this
program to move forward and
be successful we must receive
enough registration and have
qualified staff to facilitate the
program.
This program aims to en-
hance Childrens French language skills prior to entering
a French/Immersion school
system.
We are requesting parents
to come into the Daycare and
fill out a registration form and
pay a registration fee of $30
per child to show your commitment. Start date: Sept. 10.

World record life jacket event launches
Safe Boating Awareness Week
It’s all about fun in the sun while keeping safety in mind.
Safe Boating Awareness Week was
launched on Saturday, May 19 at the CFB
Trenton Yacht Club. Representatives from 8
Wing, local first responders and members of
CPS were among those on the dock to highlight the importance of wearing a life jacket.
MCpl Cathy Moreau and Cpl Dan Chartrand from 426 Transport Training Squadron
helped participants get outfitted with inflatable life jackets for Ready, Set, Wear It.
The purpose of this Safe Boating Council initiative is to promote safe and responsible
practices to recreational boaters while significantly reducing boating-related fatalities. A
life jacket can save your life, but only if you
wear it.
“There aren’t many squadrons that want to
see their ‘business’ reduced,” said 8 Wing Base
Commander Colonel Sean Friday, “but in the
case of 424 Squadron, we would certainly want
to have fewer search and rescue missions as a
result of improvements in boater safety”.
