We gratefully acknowledge Representative Doris Matsui for recommending AnHS Titan Marching Band for
this Honor, and respectfully thank the National Independence Day Parade Selection Committee for the
Once-in-a-Lifetime experience to march down Constitution Ave in Washington, D.C., July 4th 2015, as
official representatives of the great state of California!
The National Independence Day Parade
America's National
Independence Day Parade
takes place annually on July
4th in Washington, D.C.
before an audience of
hundreds of thousands of
spectators. It is a patriotic,
flag-waving, red white and
blue celebration of
America's birthday!
The Parade is co-hosted by
the National Park Service
and produced by Diversified
Events. Participating bands
are invited based on
recommendations.
Representation from all
parts of the United States is
the goal of the Selection
Committee.
It is the annual goal for the
parade organizers to have at
least one band or unit
represent each of the 50
states of the union.
Our Mission: Music Matters
Our students show that
MUSIC MATTERS in
Education and in students'
lives. Our diverse group of
students demonstrates that
just as individual musical
notes become beautiful
harmony or rousing patriotic
marches band members
become a team
that "turns more than 130
instruments, dozens of pieces
of equipment, uniforms, and
performance and travel
logistics into a well-oiled
machine." —Band Director Ms.
Sonora Mello. Our goal is to
represent our school,
community, and beautiful
state with Pride and Honor.

It is the mission of Antelope
High School's parent booster
association, Antelope Band
Booster Association (ABBA) to
support, promote, and foster
the many band programs at
Antelope High School.

Antelope High School History
Student Demographics
We Are a Melting Pot!
Antelope High School
(AnHS) is a young school
in the Roseville Joint
Union High School
District. AnHS was
established Fall 2008, in
Antelope, CA--a small
community north of
Sacramento. Our
students represent an
American "Melting Pot".
Half of AnHS' students
speak languages from
across the globe: Spanish,
Hmong, Russian,
Ukrainian, and others.
These students are
immigrant and 1st
generation Americans,
and, together, we bond
and build our community.
We have a full
appreciation for Music and
the Arts. 71% of our 1742
students last year took
Visual and Performing Arts
classes (known as VAPA),
and over 99% of our
seniors graduated. Every
one of our 18 Titan Band
seniors (2013-2014)
graduated and was accepted
to a 4 year college—some
received California Music
Honors and college
scholarships. We are proud
of our students, and
We are Titan Proud!
The Titan Band Program
When AnHS opened in Fall 2008, our first music students were part of a combination band with Oakmont High School in
Roseville, CA. In 2011, we became an independent program under the talented leadership of Director Sonora Mello. From
that year on we have had more than 100 marching band members, and despite being a very young program, we have
earned more than 40 awards in parades, clinics, and shows. Our success is a result of student dedication and the idea that
working together and helping each other makes us better as a whole. The students have built a culture of respect and
teamwork that not only helps them achieve musical excellence, but also builds the foundations of success for their future.
The Power of Music Education and Fitness
Marching Band is the Ultimate Student POWER-UP!
Musical Training improves children’s fine motor skills, abstract reasoning, thinking skills, and memory skills. Musicians must
learn musical language, understand and adjust for tempo, mood, style, and feeling. Group musicians work together balancing
sound to achieve a dynamic performance. According to studies reviewed by the Arts Education Partnership, regardless of socioeconomic or ethnic/race factors, music students outperform other students in math achievement and score higher in English and
Writing. Those students who took 4 years of music had the highest SAT scores in both math and verbal sections.
Marching Bands unite the complex nature of learning music with physical and artistic show performances. An American College
of Sports Medicine study found that marching band “Performers are constantly moving, and often running, at velocities that reach
180 steps or more per minute while playing instruments that weigh up to 40 pounds.” A University of Rhode Island study found
that marching band performers significantly improved their cardio-respiratory fitness while practicing for shows. Antelope High
School acknowledges this physical component of the program and presents a Letter comparable to athletic Letters to band
students who achieve 2 years of Marching Band.
